    Do y’all remember when Zuko had that identity crisis in Ba Sing Se? When he got sick from being a good person. I like to think that Azula’s crisis in this episode is a parallel to Zuko’s. They both built their identity around pleasing Ozai. Eventually Zuko began to realize that his father would never love him. But Azula was receiving constant validation from her father… until now. After losing her friends, allies and her father scolding her. I think she starts to have the same realization that Zuko had. But Zuko had Iroh to support him. Azula just has the memory of her mother reminding her that she’s a monster. She’s alone, so she snaps. Just a thought.

    • @mathies3598

      I mean... not entirely, but something close to that. I mean Zuko became physically ill, Azula had a mental breakdown in Azula's case it's because everyone she thought she could count on, betrayed her. In Zuko's case it was because his body was physically reacting to HIM making an unusual decision that didn't fall in line with his image of himself.

    • @swirlyful
      @swirlyful 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      maybe too picky but I think zuko wasn’t sick from being good, but rather sick just from switching sides - first of all it flips upside down everything he ever knew about the world, and second of all he has to suddenly confront the extent of how badly he’s been acting according to the new standards, so I think he was more sick from confusion and guilt

      For those watching why Aang couldn't kill Ozai in that lightning shot. It's because you have to take this in the context of Aang being the LAST AIRBENDER. and he is the last bastion of his culture. A culture of non-violence.
      Killing Ozai is letting go of that Airbender Culture of himself. An airbender culture that will be needed to be passed on... If he survived.

    The look on Ozai's face when Aang has the opportunity to redirect lighting and end the fight right there, has a subliminal meaning to it. On the surface, it just looks like he is worried, and bewildered that his attack is about to be sent back his way. But if you remember, Ozai most likely didn't know about Lightning redirection since Iroh invented (Discovered?) it. Up until Zuko shot it back at him right after the eclipse. The look on Ozai's face in this episode, is also him realizing that Zuko kept his promise to join the avatar and help to defeat him.

      I actually never really liked the following line that for the only way for the war to end peacefully was for the avatar to defeat Ozai. It makes sense in the context of the story but in terms of themes/message for the audience it offers a sort of grim outlook. We don’t have an Avatar or anything similar on our own planet, so if a dictator or absolute monarch is doing something objectively evil, is there no way for anyone to resolve that peacefully? I feel like Iroh could’ve taken out Ozai and not had his history tarnished once news of the FIre Lord’s intended plan spread worldwide. Ozai would almost certainly become a Hitler-esque personality in that world, someone universally acknowledged as genuinely evil by the majority of the people everywhere, including the fire nation.
      Plus if Iroh just lets Zuko take the throne like he intends to anyways, that would avoid any power-grabbing accusations. He even plans to live as a tea shop owner in the Earth Kingdom which pretty much eliminates any possibility of the “yeah he let his teenage nephew be in charge but behind the scenes he’s calling the shots” type of rumors lol

    Azulas mother in her hallucination sums up her behavior perfectly. She’s always used fear to control everyone. Even her friends. And when she was in a situation where that didn’t work anymore, she literally drove herself into madness. She is 14. People forget that she’s so young and has been manipulated at a young age to use her power and rage to get what she wants. And now that she has no one, she is slowly losing her mind. It’s so tragic to watch but it’s also the most beautiful. The creators taking their time to show her decent into madness. It isn’t something to be like “yea that’s what you get!” Essentially you can say that because she’s the villain. But it’s also so sad to see it. Just beautifully made. A truly beautiful show.

    In Avatar hair is of great importance. Going back to season 2 episode 1 when Zuko and Iroh cut their hair. Azula's symmetrical hair always stood for perfection (also season 2 episode 1 ("almost perfect, one hair out of place"), know she is broken, shown by her unperfect hair. Sozin's and Ozai's hair is symmetrical as well. The attack move Zuko used to make Azula fall is basically his unique move. Zuko used this move first against Zhao in season 1 episode 3.

    Double dipping in the comments, but I always liked how throughout the show with Azula, her mental state is portrayed with her hair and bending. In her early episodes, you always see her adjusting her hair. Like with the first scene with one hair out of place trying to be perfect. She always firebended with the tips of her fingers. Then with her duel after Zuko at the western air temple, her hair is fully down when she broke. Then now cutting away her bangs and using firebending with her whole hands. It a great way subtly show that in a character.

    Azula’s goals are to be with Ozai, be the greatest leader in the Fire Nation history, and have a parent to help her. For two of these, her wickedness will both help and hinder her. Smirking while Zuko is burned? Threatening the captain over a reasonable concern like the tides in order to exert her dominance? Throwing loaves of breast at turtle ducks and still having them swim away from her when she’s fourteen? Shoving Ty Lee to the ground and laughing at her just because Ty Lee upstaged her? Tormenting Zuko over something as awful as Ozai being ordered to kill him and enjoying it? Smugly having Ty Lee over a burning net to make a point? It makes her able to manipulate the Dai Li. Pushing Mai and Ty Lee too hard and making them betray her? It got their cooperation for a time. Embracing Ozai‘s treatment of Zuko and doing everything necessary to avoid the same? Well, she never really got treated like Zuko, did she? It makes her able to thrive in the current Imperial government, but also incapable of adapting to failure. Azula’s wickedness contributed to her downfall. The biggest mistake Azula had made before the Agni Kai was banishing the Dai Li. They were like her Get out of Jail Free card. She emptied the palace with all of its powerful people to help her. But, she did had a point there. Who’s to say that they won’t betray her the same way as they did with Long Feng?
    Ursa always cared about Azula, but she was concerned in the way Azula was turning out. This is the first time Ursa said I love you to Azula in the series, but not in Azula’s life. I think if Ursa had tried to counteract with Ozai’s teachings toward Azula, then she would still be the same in the series. She would still have Ozai’s influence, something that Zuko didn’t, because he didn’t have the personality and abilities that Ozai wanted him to have. I think if Ozai saw that, then he would have increased his influence on Azula or done something to hurt Ursa. To Ozai, Zuko is a lost cause, but with Azula though, that’s a different story. She was already going down that path when Ursa was still there in the palace. I don’t criticize Ursa for scolding Azula anything she did for pretty bad behavior, because she is able to be a parent to Azula, something Ozai is not.

    • @controlman7490
      @controlman7490 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      That wasn't Ursa talking though; that was Azula's mind creating a false perception of a caring Ursa who loves her; something the real Ursa didn't do. Her real mother considered her a monster, called her sick, and rarely checked up on her, she devoted all her time to Zuko, which explains Azula's semi-hatred for her brother. If Ursa had been more attentive, loving, and compassionate towards Azula's obvious mental problems, perhaps Azula wouldn't have been this vile. Ozai preferred Azula, but showed Zuko no love, Ursa preferred Zuko, but showed Azula no love. The difference is though; Ursa showered Zuko with constant love and affection, simply for being himself, while Ozai only ever praised Azula just for her talents. With a father who only cherished her for her bending abilities, and a mother who didn't love her, it's no wonder she descended into absolute madness, I think any human being would.

If I had a child who I thought was a monster, I wouldn’t let her play with her sibling or had friends. Zuko did not have any friends in Zuko Alone. Iroh and Lu Ten were away fighting. Ozai did nothing. Besides Ursa, there would be no one else that would have given Zuko time of day. Read the Search because they included some scenes that would disapprove your theory. • @controlman7490
      @controlman7490 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@horsegirl19951 Azula stated a few times how her own mother considered her a monster, which means from her perspective her mother didn't love her. This seems to be the case because during the flashbacks Ursa never showed any type of love, caring, or affection towards her daughter. She only ever scolded her and acknowledged something was wrong with her mentally, but never took it upon herself to try and find out what. She never played with Azula once, the way she did with Zuko and while it's true Azula misbehaved frequently, that's not an excuse for a mother to not spend time with her child. Another example is when Azula was telling Zuko that Ozai was going to kill him. Ursa didn't hear the conversation, but when she came into the room, she immediately assumed Azula was the one causing trouble, which was true, but a good mother would've heard both sides and then resolved the issue, not blamed 1 child and believe the other. I'll bring up 1 final example that actually does prove Ursa didn't love Azula. Azula was a natural prodigy in firebending, she had mastered multiple forms of fire bending and impressed her teachers, and even her father. The only person who never gave her an ounce of praise or compliment for her achievements; was her own mother. The only time Azula got attention from her mother was when she did something bad. That means it required Azula misbehaving for her mother to actually acknowledge her existence, which means Ursa clearly didn't love her at all. The search didn't disprove anything I said, most of the interactions we saw between Azula and her mother were nothing but hallucinations. You can disagree with me, that's part of the discussion, but know that I'm not wrong.
      Also, the fact you would alienate and distance your daughter from the rest of the family, simply because she's mentally ill; makes you a shit person. If you were a good parent, you would love her and try to get help for her condition. You and Ursa share something in common; terrible parenting.

Nature & animals in particular play such a strong background role in this story, as parts of our world with deep value and also (w/ animals) as cues on moral significance of characters & actions. Momo, specifically, is a kind of tie to innocence for Aang. So when Aang tells him to go here, that's him taking full responsibility for the moment as an emerging adult. One of the best if not the best episode of the series. The score of the agni kai sets the tone of this tragic battle between brother and sister. Mind you that they're just teenagers (14/15/16 yearish), both mentally and physically abused by their father. I've always wondered why Azula's fire is blue. Apparently blue fire indicates a perfect combustion (something with the oxygen levels), which can also be related to Azula's perfectionism. Before she lost her cool she was always calculated and even used her 2 fingers to firebend, indicating precision. Fastforward to now we can see that she uses her entire palms to bend.
    On the other hand we see Zuko implementing techniques from other bending elements which I like to think he picked up during his team with team avatar (also a call back to the episode where uncle Iroh gave him a lesson about the 4 elements):
    He stood is ground during the fight with some sturdy stances, very reminiscent of earthbenders
    He did the b-boy rotator 3000 ting which is quite a elegant move befitting of an airbender
    And finally the lighting redirection which is based on the tai-chi-esque moves of waterbenders
    Nice details.

    No cap, I had a 13 year old girl student who was absolutely amazing. She went to a local UFC gym and challenged one of their prize fighters and one shot him with a kick right into his jaw. People underestimate younger opponents all the time.

      Firelord/Phoenix King Ozai is showing the philosophy of how combos work in Shaolin/Firebending, where every strike leads into the next. The combo of a Shaolin master is relentless. Once they have the advantage, they press it until they decide they are done.
      A true Shaolin Master can throw 200 strikes in 1 minute.

    Azula's descent into madness is a fucking trainwreck I can't look away from, and it works on me like a hard drug. It is truly a spectacle and I really wished that instead of the comics, we'd have season 4. Because ho lee shieeeeet
    Edit: one thing to note is that what uncle said is true: while bending lightning you need to be completely void of emotions. In that brief moment of lucidity that Azula's created for herself (like she's done countless times I'm guessing) she realised how she could easily beat Zuko, and shot the lightning at Katara. She finally found out Zuko's one remaining "flaw", his friends.

    the music for the last Agni Kai is sooooo good. because this is a sad fight! brother vs sister, and azula is only fourteen. their paths got so twisted and now they're turned against each other. a badass fight song like aang vs ozai wouldn't work half so well as the somber, mournful one they went with.

    "His voice actor is doing a great job"
    No surprise here ;)
    Mark Hammil did Ozai's voice.
    He may have been known best for Luke Skywalker, but his most infamous role was voice acting for Batman the Animated series as none other than THE JOKER.

    Fun Fact! : The Voice Actor for Fire Lord Ozai is none other than Mark Hamill! You might know him better as Luke Skywalker from Star Wars, or the Joker from the Batman animated series from the 1990's. He's absolutely brilliant as a VA.

    Well zuko had a great redemption but iron helped him a lot. When we was young his mum cared about him, but azula didn't have this love. Her father showed her his attention only if she was the best so she did anything to make him proud. Her story is a tragedy actually. Of course she was a horrible person to, but she didn't know how to live in other way
    Even the music during agni Kai is tragic because it's not about action
    Also it was stupid from katara to just stand here but zuko did this because he could redirect and minimize the harm from it(he did this actually he wasn't just striked with lightning)

  • @rosesvvloweer

    Could it be that the Firelord was scared because he only saw Zuko redirecting lightning and Zuko said he will join the Avatar and now he can see Zuko did taught Aang

    When Sokka, Suki and Toph are on the airships, they aren't over the water anymore and even if they were, jumping into the water would be like hitting concrete from that height and if they survived, Toph can't swim...😬

    Y’all should do a tier list video, like use a tier list maker for power rankings, episode rankings, and character rankings (either power or how much you like them), and you could either do it live or do it as a video & do it separate from the q&a (again to get those dank view hours)
    Also your reaction to this got me hyped. This episode is 10/10 and your reaction is 10/10

      then again, redirecting is basically based on waterbending... if Zuko had not jumped in front of her, I think she'd have had a fair shot at doing it herself.

    Zuko definitely took in some of Azula’s lightning when she struck at Katara, but if you look at the next shot a lot of it flies up into the sky, showing that he managed to redirect a lot of it out just in time

    They bring back something in this episode that I think they touched on in The Firebending Masters: this technique of breath control with firebnding. How a lot of fire benders use physical power and strength in their bending, but iroh uses his breathing.
