my favorite part of this episode is when aang says to zuko “if we knew each other back then, do you think we could’ve been friends?” i really think that question right there hit zuko, but he’s so hell-bent on getting his honor back

You have to understand Zuko is the Firelord's son. Which means he had access to the best training and education in the Fire Nation (before his banishment). So it would make sense that he would be skilled in other fighting styles outside of fire bending.

So just to be clear the only reason Zuko did that was to capture him himself. But yeah he's crazy with swords.

You don’t see the manipulative side of Zuko a lot and also you will change your favorite episode a lot.
I have a headcanon about why Zhao was promoted to Admiral, even though he screwed up in the temple with no Avatar and Zuko. Perhaps Ozai knew that Zuko was getting so close to Aang consistently, so he promoted Zhao to even give Zuko a harder time to capture Aang. The mask was red at first, but they thought it would be a giveaway that the person was Fire Nation, so they changed it. It was a bucket of water. And also I would have loved to see what Zuko was thinking when Aang cried, “Wait! My friends need to suck on those frogs!”
That makes too much sense! I always figured Zhao was just well connected and a suck-up to Ozai, but I like your headcanon better.

They aren’t mutually exclusive. Zhao is a slimy ass kisser AND Ozai wants to make it even harder for Zuko.
I think people tend to uderestimate ZHao a lot.
True he is not on the same level of the main characters, but he's one of the few people who actually captured aang ,with the assets he saw could be used to do it.
His ambition is his biggest flaws but you can't deny he sees opportunity where other officer wouldn't, he saw trough ZUko several times and knew how to use him, make plan other wouldn't dare to think about so I think it makes perfect sense that he would be seen has a good choice to lead Firenation Armies, at least in the Firelord eyes.
Zhao legitimately seems to be at least a decent commander between his use of resources in this episode and spoilers at the bottom
the main draw for his promotion really seems to be his dedication to capturing the avatar it makes Zuko's job harder yes but also dealing with the avatar is a pretty big deal that he definitely seems to be willing to devote exorbitant amounts of resources towards
the finale he has actually good plans that admittedly go wrong, but I can't fault him for using them hindsight is 20/20
Well Zuko didn't helped Aang because he wanted to , he did that because if Zhao would have presented the avatar in front of Fire Lord then Zuko would never get a chance to restore his honor.
Basically he freed him so that he can capture him himself

I meant after they both escaped .. Zuko still attacked aang as he knew he still had to capture him.
The Blue Spirits theme is probably my favorite soundtrack throughout the show. It sounds so eery, but also badass

@@AkinReacts The problem for Zuko is his father doesn't value non-bending skills. If Ozai had ever encouraged his son, he'd have a very efficient stealth assassin on his side
And I bet Zuko perfected his swordsmanship because he never felt confident with fire bending, or too short tempered as we saw in the first episode.
When you think about it, Zuko is a prince. From a very military family. We know at least his uncle was a famous general. So it would make sens he learned how to fight with swords. How he never used them ? Maybe because he's not confident enough with them. Or maybe he take great pride as fighting with the gift he was born with. Back on the Haru episode, the chiefman of the prison was talking bad about earthbending, like an inferior thing. Either way, Zuko is an amazing character, as well as a great villain. Because you know why he became like that, and the good he still has in him.
Yeah he’s definitely still a good person considering why he actually got banished !!
Maybe Ozai doesn's value non-bending skills. I think the reasone Zuko started learning ans maatering non-bending is thet he wasn't confident in his firebending skils

Fun fact the music that plays for the blue spirit is the same theme that's used for Zuko throughout the rest of the series. I can't remember if they've used it before this episode but if they had then there was a hint to his identity from his first appearance.

Like the colonel says this basically is just a vanity project all the resources being used to capture Aang are being diverted from the war effort, but his promotion clearly shows that the firelord puts far more priority on capturing the avatar than furthering the war just something to keep in mind

Honestly, Book 1 is good, it may even be great. But it is still the *weakest* of the three books. So I'm glad that you're enjoying Book 1 because that means that you'll love Books 2 and 3 even more.

Zuko needs to bring the Avatar back by himself, if Zhao brought Aang back, Zuko would still be banished and without honor.

I love this episode because it does so much in such a short timespan: 1) provides a good, in-universe reason for not killing the main character so that people can’t call it a plot hole,
2) establishes that Zuko is still an antagonist, but also builds on the symmetry between him and aang (through the fight scene), which makes the fans long for a partnership between them, making it all the more sad that they’re stuck on opposing sides.
3) gives more examples of non-bending badasses between the archers (notice how hard the wind was blowing when they captured aang!!) and the blue spirit (who I know is a bender but doesn’t use it.)
4) makes zhao more of a threat.

zuko probably got really good with swords due to the fact that he's not that good at firebending
He was able to beat general Zhao 🤷🏿♂️
Considering he's only 15-16 he's insanely good. Just not as good as others in his family. No spoilers!!! He was trained by a master swordsman.
You can see the Blue Spirit swords hanging on the wall in Zuko's bedroom on the ship in previous episodes.
I remember the first time I watched this episode, which was the first time it every aired on TV (I never missed an episode on its premiere night) I didn't notice the bucket Zuko had and thought I saw water bending, and I was sure the Blue Spirit MUST be Sokka and Katara's dad. (Of course I didn't know back then he was a non-bender).
It makes so much sense that it was Zuko though. He did what he thought he had to do to get his honor back, because if Zhao captures Aang first Zuko will never get the chance to again.
For sure one of the best episodes of this show. And again it only gonna get better man. Specially the Animation. like you guys are seeing it. Better fights! all of it.

Its really cool watching you all react to the series like this! I espeically like your analysis of stuff going on and making connections from previous episodes.
One thing that caught my attention was how similar Aang and Zuko's stories are. Both are young, with an enormous amount of pressure on them to succeed and be great. Aang being the Avatar, Zuko being the prince of the Fire Nation. Seeing them fight together to well and so fluidly without even realizing it at first speaks volumes to the creators of the show and how they wrote the characters to be compelling.

When Zuko's father burned him he was only 13. I'm pretty sure he's only 16. He's amazingly skilled in SO many things. Firebending and swordsmanship being the main ones.
Facts, he had to go through so much by himself while also searching for the avatar which at the time wasn’t seen for a long time. Uncle Iroh is the only one who was by his side 😞

I'm loving the reactions guys, I would only ask ya'll to do less pausing throughout the episodes specifically during a big reveal, especially with a show like this where there's a lot, and try to save most of the discussion for after the episode. It kind of disrupts the pacing that's intended for the episode and the ride this story will take you on. If y'all were to do only that I'm sure a lot of us would greatly appreciate it, please and thank you, and keep up the great work.
We ain’t trynna speak over part and miss important details … because the comments in the videos would just be “you’re talking over important parts” we’d rather pause if we need to speak cuh there are a lot of things to unpack each episode 🤷🏿♂️

I totally agree, I love the reactions guys but the pausing really distracts from some of the show's emotional journey - especially since the show answers a lot of the questions you are looking for. Having the discussion after the episode is over would be awesome - thanks guys!
Tbh when we did speak over the show itself in earlier episodes and people were commenting saying we were missing key points and talking over them… we honestly prefer pausing it now and speaking our mind and we aren’t missing the emotional journey … we still feel it 👊🏾but thank you for the support we will try reduce the amount of times we pause it 😊

This episode was do thought provocative for me, it made me think that HEY Aang and ZUKO could of been friends.. Or at least really strong together, it also made it really tragic that they were enemies especially since I think Aang really wants to be his friend form this point and would have accepted him in the group had ZUKO asked. But obviously ZUKO rejected it.
