One of the most underrated parts of this finale is the sound design. The way the fire sounds when amplified by the comet really gives you an idea of just how much more powerful it is.
That twin fire blast Zuko uses when the music calms, or the intensity of Ozai's blast from the airship or the one he used to break Aang's shield really hammers that home to me every time
The sounds for the entirety of the Agni Kai are amazing especially paired with that music.

i'm glad to see some empathy for azula too, as she was just as mistreated as zuko but in a completely different way, and it shattered her psyche. it's clear she's just a fifteen year old girl when she loses, and sobs in her frustration and helplessness.

First episode was titled the Boy in the Iceberg and the last episode is titled Avatar Aang. Same character but shows his growth through the series.
not only is it aang's charcter, he is the last living airbender. if he bends on the principle of killing, it's like killing his culture fully. avatar yang chen might have told him he has to lay down that principle, but she was surrounded by airbenders, so it's different. it would have survived in others, whereas with aang he's the only one left living that way.

Azula's first intro is one of perfectionism. "Only a hair out a place" and she considered that not good enough. If she can't control every aspect of her life and the people around her, then it's infuriating.

1 subtle (if unintentional) detail I like about the show is that the actor who voiced Aang was a kid when the show began & he went through puberty as it went on, so Aang's voice gradually got deeper with each Season showing him maturing by the finale.
Another fun fact, his voice got so much deeper that they actually had to scale his voice higher so it sounded normal. So even with the gradual change over seasons, his voice was even deeper than we hear by the finale.

I think there's one thing people to forget about Aang, even though it's literally the show's title: he's the last Airbender. All of his people got wiped out, he's literally the only single person who can still carry on the Airbenders' culture, spirit and philosophy.
Aang getting upset about the Northern Air Temple, losing Appa or having to kill someone is not just about his personal feelings and beliefs. He feels fully responsible for carrying on the entire Air Nation legacy.
I don't think we fully understand Aang's internal struggle until all of that really clicks.
I really feel Toph’s fear during that whole sequence. Every single time she wasn’t standing on something solid, she probably assumed the only thing below her was a multi-thousand feet drop to certain death, and she must have felt so terrified when sokka let go of her. Imagine jumping off a cliff and then closing your eyes, not knowing when you might splat. She assumed she was going to die every time they fell… poor girl. love Toph so much she literally carried the gang ever since she shown up best character imo (besides sokka and iroh)
The face of the firelord when Aang redirected the lightning is a 11/10. Not only did he fear for his life in that very moment, but he also should have realized who taught Aang how to do it.
Also can we agree on Iroh, Sokka and Toph as the greatest characters?!
Talking about the end: *THIS* is why it is regarded as one of the best (animated if you will) shows of all time.

I love the scene where Aang asks the previous avatars for advice. Each of them faced the problems of their era and have wisdom they gained from their situation. But ultimately Aang has to be the one who finds a solution for the problem of his era.
Roku said he can't avoid the confrontation.
Kyoshi said that it HAD to be done, there is no peacfull way out.
Kuruk said that HE has to do it, noone else will.
And finally Yangchen said that his personal feelings must not be the reason for pacifism.
(or in other words it's fine, if he doesn't want to murder Ozai because it is fundamentally wrong, but it can't be because he doesn't want to be a murderer)
And in the end he followed all their advice while also finding another solution that is unique to his character.
What is especially interesting is that Aang seemed to go against the advice of all his allies, even the past Avatars, who claimed that it was the Avatar's duty to do whatever it took to stop Ozai. This was a rare moment where Aang was completely alone. The Lion Turtle is an ancient, mythical creature, that Aang bowed to in reverence, like a deity.
The fact that it appeared before him, spoke to him, and shared that power with him is a big deal. Who knows when the Lion Turtle was last seen let alone the last time it shared its power with a human. I don't think it did so with Roku or the past Avatars.
In many ways, Aang has actually ascended above & beyond the title of Avatar now, surpassing his predecessors. A fully realized Avatar can bend all 4 elements, but Aang is the first to bend energy itself, to simply "take away" a person's ability to bend, just like that. It's not even clear what Aang is capable of now. He may be able to do much, much more, but there was no need.
I think that Kuruk advise is underrated,
He said to Aang that he can cut his own path, and that's what Aang did.
I feel like that scene was very underrated. I loved how the previous Avatars gave him important advice, but never told him what to do. It was his first, really, big test as an Avatar. I have a similar take on the Avatar's advice.
Roku, didn't say to kill, just that, whatever, he did, he had to be decisive and sure. Any wavering of his resolve, to kill or spare, would be detrimental, and Ozai would take advantage of that hesitation.
Kyoshi said that only justice will bring peace. I took that as meaning he couldn't be going into this for vengeance or revenge. If he killed, or spared, justice needed to be met out for the war to truly end. Otherwise, either side could still harbor resentment for his actions and try to carry on the hostilities.
Kuruk said he needed to, actively, shape his own destiny. He couldn't be complacent and just see how things fell out. He needed a plan and he need to make decisions on how it was going to end. Kind of similar to Roku's advice.
Yangchen, I believe, came the closest to saying he needed to kill. But I think her real message was that he couldn't let his own beliefs and preferences come at the expense of the world. This was his responsibility, whether or not he asked for it, and he needed to do what it took to resolve it.
I just realized Ty Lee's backstory was about her trying not to be a part of a match set and in the end she became so secure with her individuality she joined a match set. There's so many great subtle details.
Even now, after all these years, this still holds up as one of the best shows I've seen. Animated or live action. 🐾🐾🍻
I still remember watching these episodes when they aired. The anticipation of the end; watching everyone's character arcs coming full circle. Very few shows have managed to top this series.

i was so waiting for this Don. When Aang finally had ozai trapped in the rock and spoke to him, that scene was so good, would absolutely be terrifying to see in person
Something i don't see a lot of people point out in the Zuko vs Azula final fight is that he uses moves from other bender types to control his fire. Remember Iroh once told him that he should learn from them to keep the balance like the avatar does.
Also the fact the whole fight shows who each of them are in that moment. Azula being erratic moving everywhere while zuko stays in the exact same place, never does anything unnecessary

When he was 13 Zuko spoke out against a General's plan in his father's presence so his father fought him & when Zuko beg for forgiveness his father burned his face. 3 years later, Zuko betrayed Iroh to regain his father's love, but when he begs for forgiveness Iroh immediately forgives him. Iroh was more of a loving father to Zuko then Ozai ever was or would be, though Iroh did say that ever since he lost his son he felt Zuko was the 2nd son he wished he could have had.
it must have been so scary for zuko. LIke he knows deep down iroh is not like his father but the last time he was begging for forgiveness he was burned. BUt his uncle's forgiveness meant more to him than his fears.
Yep, Iroh is awesome. Like he said, he was NEVER mad at Zuko. He was just sad and afraid that Zuko had lost his way. Even when he had every reason to feel betrayed and hurt, he was still just being a loving uncle and caring for his nephew's wellbeing.
I am tempted to say Iroh is the GOAT of Avatar, but that status is reserved for Toph, of course.
Aang’s new ability to bend a persons energy is the same thing as when Ty Lee hits certain pressure points on the body. She disrupts the person’s chi, or energy flow (paths), removing their ability to bend, or even move at all. But Aang’s is far more effective; permanently removing their ability to bend.
So, in theory, perhaps he could use it to give someone who was never a bender, like Sokka, the capability of being a bender. Sounds like a good idea for fan fiction!
AMAZING!! Best finale. And Azula breaks my heart!! She was just a misguided baby who was desperate for her fathers love. She really thought she had earned it by appealing to his obsession with power, but misunderstood Ozai’s adoration of her brilliance and fighting skills as love rather than what it really was- egotistical pride of owning a strong soldier. And even then Ozai viewed everyone around him as disposable. Such a powerful lesson here that safety and affection are things that no child should ever think are conditional.
Not to mention that Ursa only really paid attention to Zuko, and the few interactions we've seen between her and Azula in the show and the comics was scolding. If she paid more attention to Azula and treated both her children equally, things might've ended up different
Yeah, it's easy to forget, but Azula is only 14 at the time of the show, she's basically a kid who has been broken because of how she was raised by Ozai.

I loved how in the Beach episode,Ty Lee was saying that she did not want to be part of a matching set with everyone that looks like her, and what happened in the finale; she joined the Kiyoshi warriors where everyone where is the exact same thing and has exact same make up.
Right, but she meant she didn't want to be the same as her sisters. Being the very first ever non-earth nation kyoshi warrior definitely sets her appart. Plus, kyoshi warriors are now even more op, notice how ty lee said she gave em chi blocking lessons?

I imagine that it's possible another Avatar could've learned that stuff but I have a feeling it would only be to supplement or enhance his own bending moves since I believe in general master benders can beat many highly skilled nonbenders and the Avatar is supposed to be the most powerful bender being highly skilled in all types of bending. I don't think Mai and Ty Lee can get much more powerful unless it's purely by increasing their speed and maybe Mai's agility, but I feel like while Katara can be considered a master she has so much more room she can grow; we haven't seen Katara fighting on a water spout like Pakku and Avatar State Aang have. And yet in their fights Mai and Ty Lee have beaten Katara but Katara has also beaten them before so I'd say they are probably around equal levels right now.
When Azula was losing her mind after being neutralized, the look on Katara’s face makes me think she was recalling what Toph said at the western air temple.

One of the more heart-wrenching moments of the ending episode is when Sokka is holding Toph over the edge and he tells her, "I think this is it." Because Toph is hanging in midair, she is completely blind, the ONLY thing she can sense is Sokka's hand, and when he says that, she can feel that he isn't lying and has given up, thinking they are both about to die. And then they show that look on her face as he says that. That is probably when she felt the most scared and helpless in her life, and the only consolation was that she was holding onto Sokka and wasn't completely alone.

24:51. A lot of fans complain that the Lion Turtle is a deux ex machina since he comes out of nowhere to give Aang this new power, but that's not true. In what is probably the best example of subtle foreshadowing from this show, we did see drawings & sculptures of Lion Turtles throughout the show, & there were mentions of animals being the original benders, so the Lion Turtle being the source for this power Aang needed to defeat Ozai was built up in a way no one expected but works within the show's lore.
I think it would’ve been better if Aang remembered the lion turtle or possibly found it’s image in another book from the the library and sought it out for advice as it’s one of the oldest beings, and that’s how he learns, rather than the lion turtle randomly appearing and giving him a convenient power. And we would’ve gotten at least one more episode of ATLA with Aang and Momo on this journey, so win-win!!
It's really interesting how Ty Lee hated being a part of a "matching set" growing up and now is comfortable in her own identity with the Kiyoshi warriors. Cool character development.

A slept on aspect of Katara beating Azula during that fight is that Azula was still powered by the comet, while Katara was fighting purely on the natural strength of her water bending capabilities, unpowered by the moon.
I loved watching you experience this show for the first time. It felt like watching it all over again for me. And seeing your appreciation, love, and understanding was just ugh phenomenal. Amazing series watching you beginning to end.

18:14. There was a silent short called Escape From The Spirit World that was released on the Season 2 box set where Aang met both Kuruk & Yangchen, but his memories of it were erased hence why doesn't remember them here.

To answer your question about the Lion Turtle, they are very old spirits like ancient old hence why Aang bowed to show respect because he was told about them sometime when he was with the monks that's why he knew what it was. Also I'm glad you understand Azula's meltdown I've seen other reaction that just say she deserved it and that's it. They missed the bigger picture with her character like you said every character had a reason for their actions (except for Zhao and of course the Ozai which both were bad just for the glory and titles)
I’ve seen the entire series so many times over the last decade and I still tear up all over this series. I straight up lose it when other people tear up while watching.
I love that Zuko's breakdance fire spin is his signature move that improved throughout the whole series. The creators knew what they were doing this whole time.

I feel like Toph's scars are often quite underestimated. She's been kept away from the world her whole life. People didn't even know she existed, she was a prisoner in her own home. She had no sense of privacy because she was guarded all the time. She had to run away countless times to get a slight sense of freedom. She never had the opportunity to socialize with people her own age which is super important for her development. She has no deep scar from losing someone because she never got the opportunity to find someone to lose aside from her parents and teachers. That in itself must be horrible. The only friends she managed to find outside of her home were badger moles until she met the Gaang. Even when was among people in Earth Rumble 6, she had to distance herself from everybody to keep her identity hidden.
She was always seen as no more than her blindness and totally ignored for who she really was, even when she showed her power. Her parents loved her but they were downright abusive. If you ask me, she managed to develop herself to an impressive degree, considering her upbringing.

And then her friends betrayed her for her loser, brother, the brother, who is not as good as her who she knows is not as good as her and who should always be losing

The Lion-Turtle acted as mobile cities/guardians to humans at the very beginning of the world and human life, before even the first Avatar, back when both the human and spirit worlds were still connected. They gifted humans the different elements, fire, water, earth and air on a temporary basis to allow them to hunt for food in the wilds while able to protect themselves with the elements gifted to them, only to be given back to the Lion-Turtle at the end of the hunt.
The first Avatar was banished from one of these human settlements, and thus to give him a fighting chance, was gifted the element of fire. The first Avatar travelled the world, discovering other Lion-Turtles and their cities, and being granted the different elements to use. The first Avatar encountered the spirit of light, Rava, who is the one capable of bringing out an Avatar state and powering things up to the max, fusing spirit and Avatar together for all eternity.
The Lion-Turtles themselves are capable of bending the energy within others and are sort of primordial living benevolent gods practically.

I usually watch his TH-cam reactions, but I'm telling you people paying for his patreon just to watch this series finale was so worth it. With a finale this momentus, the cuts just don't do it justice. Watching it full circle was the reaction I needed😂

so a small, as few spoilers as possible, explanation for the lion turtle:
basically, in Khora we get the deep lore of the world including the origin of the avatar, and during that they establish that Lion Turtles are basically gods who protect humanity in various forms, and thus one realized that the Avatar needed assistance and showed up to assist.
One of my favorite moments is the last move Zuko does to beat Azula. It's the same thing he does to Zhou(No clue how to spell it) in the first agni kai we see with him. Truly utilizing everything Iroh taught him

Because it’s bad. It ruined the mystery and lore of the avatar, it ignores the bending cultures, the almighty spirits are nonsense Pokémon, the main characters are selfish, horrible beings.
And worst of all is Korra, she’s pathetic and stupid.
No lessons are learned anywhere, the story and villains are all over the place and its overall just exhausting to watch.
The only few good moments are if we see our beloved characters Zuko, Katara or Toph (which proofs how awesome the characters of Atla are).
Otherwise it just ruins a masterpiece which should have remained untouched.

The lion-turtles are in important aspect of the mythology of the Avatar world. You can sometimes see statues of them in the background, but it was a bit sudden for Aang to meet one.
I loved watching you react to this. This show was my childhood. I remember watching a marathon of avatar as a child. And the final episode was after midnight. I remember being so happy I got to stay up past my bedtime.
I love that the last bending move aang does with the water is the first move he learned with katara

Humanity has been telling stories for generations but it truly peaked with Avatar the Last Airbender
If you wanna find out what happens after these events with Zuko searching for his mother I highly recommend the hardcover comics. They're legit and there are several of them starting with "The Search." They not only follow Zukos search for his mother but also the events of Aang and Zuko putting the world back together. It's not as simple as you'd think it would be. They're well worth the reads. The three novels that follow two different Avatars (Kyoshi and Yangchen) and their lives are great as well.

Hey Don Townsend and others who might be confused, this is my answer on what happened with the lion turtle and the ending with the fight. Forewarning that it is a long post, but is a thorough answer.
My belief on what the lion turtle was trying to tell Aang with the riddle is this: The answer to Aang's dilemma lies with his heart. Like Zuko, Aang needs to understand the kind of person he is, as that is/will be the source of his power. He is "a gentle spirit" and cannot fathom taking a life, and so he must never do so because doing so would destroy his sense of self. All of his past lives and other current people telling him that he needs to kill Ozai are not lying to him in that its a solution, but with Aang being who he is, he would be lying to himself if he did it. The lion turtle states this when he says "The true mind can weather all the lies and illusions without being lost." Aang needed to find a different way that would stay true to his heart/morals, and it must not involve killing Ozai no matter how much everyone else's hatred says otherwise. This goes with the lion turtle stating "The true heart can tough the poison of hatred without being harmed".
On to the ending:
The lion turtle told this to Aang when he said "Before the Avatar, we bent not the elements but the energy within ourselves". The ability to bend the elements is the result of the energy flowing from people and extending to their environment, specifically the part they associate the most. Their will guides their energy to move the elements. Therefore, the answer to Aang's dilemma lies here. Sidenote: this is also the key to entering the avatar state at will as well as explained by the guru at the end of season 2. By Aang learning how to bend the energy within himself and by extension others, he can take away someone's bending by blocking the energy flow within the other person. No energy flow = no bending = powerless Ozai.
I had a bit of trouble understanding Aangs position during my first time watching the show, as well. For me, im pretty similar. Id absolutely hate having to kill someone, but in this situation, id be looking at Ozai as a virus that had to be eliminated before he spread. The greater good, all that. But heres something i thought about as well, it helped me get behind Aangs choice. To Aang, if he had sacrificed his morals and compromised the monks teachings and killed Ozai, as far as he was concerned, it would just be one more part of Air Nomad culture that dissappeared forever. Him holding to his belief wasnt just a personal issue, it was also a cultural issue.
I was not on the journey with you because TH-cam just had this video in my recommended and I was like "Ooo, an Avatar reaction video, lets watch" and so here I am. I grew up watching ATLAB and it was and will always be one of the shows which shaped my heart, I occasionally watched it over and over again and always felt the need to cry when it's finished. When I first watched Avatar: The Last Air Bender, I never really liked Zuko and Azula, eventually as young as I was, I started realizing that even though Zuko was constantly chasing Aang, he was just doing it for the approval of his father Ozai and that made me see Zuko as a misunderstood Villain, or a dark Hero. Azula on the other hand, it took me years before I truly understood her character. Zuko and Azula's mother loved them both, but I felt as though she favoured Zuko more so than Azula, and while Zuko longed for his father's approval, he clearly favoured Azula as she was more talented than Zuko and because of this, they both became broken, if anything Zuko and Azula are prime examples of children that came from a household with only one parent present, and even though they both barely had their parents in their lives, but they still did, Azula lacked the love of a mother and Zuko lacked the approval of a father, which I would say is the beginning of what made them who they became as adults. Now if I'm being honest Avatar: Legend of Korra, will never stand up to Avatar: The Last Airbender, ya'll could probably say otherwise, but ATLAB is peak compared to ALOK in my humble opinion. Also we never got to see Zuko searching for his mother, I once heard that it's in the books or something like that and I also heard that the creator of the ATLAB and ALOK series is going to create another one, not sure how plausible that is, I hope it is, great video btw. I just love to see someone else witness such an amazing show as I did.
My cinematic trauma. That final scene of azula just breaks my heart every time I see her. You are a victim, the background of azula's character is very interesting. Even if you've done bad things, I love you azula. You alone stole the show.

There are comic series that are set in the years shortly after ATLA. The Promise trilogy, The Search trilogy, The Rift trilogy, Smoke and Shadow trilogy, The North and the South trilogy, and Imbalance trilogy. The Promise starts literally seconds after the show ends but within like 10 pages does a 1 year time jump, The Search is also in that year, The Rift is about a year later, but then it becomes a bit more unclear exactly how long after the other comics are. I'd guess that Smoke and Shadow is shortly after The Rift and The North and the South slightly overlaps Smoke and Shadow, and I'd guess Imbalance is about another year later or so. So Imbalance would be roughly around 3 years after this finale.

Yeah, it was Mai and Ty Lee's betrayal that broke Azula, if the 2 people she had spent her whole life cultivating into being her most loyal friends via teaching them to fear her would betray her, what the hell's to stop anyone else betraying her, and the Dai Li probably made it worse since she knew full well that they were perfectly willing to betray their leader at the first sign of someone better coming along.
Fun note. Katara is the only character that we've seen consistently be able to equal or best Azula in one-on-one combat. Which explains why they only sent her along with Zuko.

It's more than just Aang's character though, which is what really adds another level to the whole ordeal. You have to remember, he's the last of his people. The last living member of an entire culture wiped out by the war. And his people were pacifists. They didn't have a formal military, they valued all life, they never killed. This was more than just Aang - he was being asked to betray everything his people believed in and stood for and taught him. Ozai said they were too weak to live in this world, his world. If Aang had killed Ozai, he would've been admitting that he was right - the Airbenders were wrong. His people were wrong. He would be, in his mind, justifying that they all got killed. Aang couldn't accept that. So he stood his ground. He insisted, no, his people did not deserve to die, they were not weak, and he found another way even when his own past lives were telling him there wasn't one. And that's just, really awesome, honestly.

The water bender avatar basically saying take action don’t just let things flow, u gotta move things into the shape u want but in terms of being wise, that’s solid advice whether he wanna kill

Like it isn’t just Ang’s character, he is the last air nomad and their whole philosophy was only to use violence if your life depends on it so killing Osai would have been him abandoning their culture. I love this show and how deep it is because it isn’t about him not wanting to do it, if he killed him their culture would have died with the ex fire lord.

OK so basically Lion turtles are the original benders of all the elements, bending began with them, you'll learn more about that when you get further into the legend of Kora
Even if Iroh put Zuko in the position of the Firelord it could still be seen as a power grab: Iroh kills his brother and then puts someone in charge that he can influence, or Zuko using Iroh's abilities to take Ozai down where Zuko himself couldn't and then taking the throne after. Regardless of what happened after there would be people who questioned it. Since the Avatar's job is balance and peace between the 4 nations he can be seen as impartial, and it can be assumed that whoever the Avatar says should gain the position after Ozai's defeat can be assumed to be in the best interests of balance and peace.

The lion turtle basically gave aang energy bending, allowing him to take the fire lords bending, & any other persons bending.
When he put out the fire, that was the first water bending move he learned.

I know someone has said it already but the lion turtles were the original creatures that granted bending to humans before the avatar existed. The one in this episode gave him the same ability it had which was to energy bend. Energy bending is the ability to bend the energy within a person’s body which will be used later on.

Fire Lord Ozai raised Azula, she was bound to wind up like this. She felt distant from her mother and has a personality disorder that makes her feel little remorse or empathy. Ozai's favorite child, who happens to be cunning, lethal, talented in every way, and perfectly embodies the Fire Nation mentality Ozai raised her to believe in. Azula has actual issues, I can't help but feel sorry for her because she's only 14.
