Everyone forgets, except Azula. Katara forgets, Sokka doesn't piece it together, and even the audience loses track somehow, I know I did the first couple times I saw the show. Only on deep analysis do you notice stuff like this

HEY i just noticed that in 14:20 that soldier was really confident that his firebending would work,
and looked really shocked when it didn't.
It reminded me of the reason Zuko was banished , the Generals and the Fire Lord wanted to sacrifice inexperienced soldiers
by putting them in the front lines for like a shield or diversion while the more experienced ones did the real mission
It looks like they they did this here as well
some knew and waited till the eclipse was over, but some weren't told a thing and weren't prepared , if this wasn't a kid show they would have all been dead right?
They used them to draw Team Avatar in so they would be to deep in the City to have time to escape .
Those planes could have been brought out at anytime and put a stop to the invasion right away ,

My man Raphael has been a true believer. We love to see the big redemption. Big-ups to Zuzu. His confrontation with Ozai is one of the best scenes of the series.
Notice in this episode Azula has been training with her two friends to be able to hold her own in combat as a non-bender. She is notably more agile here, from Ty Lee, and Mai gave her a dagger for self defense.
Mmmm! Watch something over a thousand times and hear out others perspectives and you will still always learn something new... I never thought of that

It's all up to personal interpretation. We know Azula isn't the best friend but if you have seen episode 'the beach' you have seen a few scenes were Azula at least subtly shows she is close to Ty Lee even if they aren't the picture of a healthy friendship.
Also the knife she uses is Mai's triple point dagger she is fond of. Why would they reuse an asset like that of it wasn't meant to tell a story?
Either way, it's totally valid to disagree.
(Edit) last point. Even if they aren't friends she values them as tools of war. If she didn't think they were assets they wouldn't be part of the elite team she made. So she definitely thinks in a situation without her fire, she would train with people who also can't use fire but are very effective warriors.

Unfortunately we don't know the details of Iroh's escape. But my theory is that he timed it so that he busted his cage open with firebending seconds before the eclipse started, and then used hand-to-hand fighting to get out of the tower while the firebending was turned off
Personally, I think it’s more badass if he just ripped the bars off with his bare hands.

So glad you guys finally got here. At the finale of season 2, you guys were so frustrated with Zuko’s decision to join Azula. But here’s the thing, he needed to. Zuko needed to go home. He needed to experience the life he kept saying he wanted. He needed to go home so he would understand that he no longer wanted that life. If he had gone with Aang and the others at the end of season 2, deep down, he would always wonder what he was missing out on. Now he knows, he isn’t missing out on anything.
Holy shit you guys are in for a ride because the second half of the season is arguably one of the greatest television you guys are ever gonna witness

I just kind of became aware of how it’s not just the physical aspect of the scenes, but the EMOTIONS too. A LOT of deep, deep emotions here with Zuko, and I LOVE it. It’s a total role reversal. Zuko confronting his father, the same exact way Iroh confronted Zuko under the lake. Unannounced and with righteous fury in their voices.
It’s like, FINALLY. YES. Maaaan… This show is just a goddamned masterpiece and it only gets better from here lol
Easy to miss but the guy who snitches at 7:54 was the captain of the giant drill. After the drill was destroyed he was demoted to Cave Supervisor
The fact that Azula didn‘t even need bending and has out maneuvered Aang and Toph at the same time. Her agility is insane.

She could have still learned from mai but obviously she knows how to use weapons due to the academy. Yall never give azula credit where credit is due. Plot armor intensifies
It's actually UNBELIEVABLE though like she was good at evading but AANG and TOPH were so bad tryna capture her, it should have been light work for them
So...wasn't Katara's plan to leave while they could better than this failure ? :3 Aang is feeling so bitter... It's the third time he failed the world. First was when he flew and got froze into the ice. Second was during the fight at Ba Sing Se.
And this is what make Zuko's redemption so good. We saw him in the wrong for so long, it feels good to see him make his decisions. Without Iroh's wisdom, on his own.
And you can see why Azula is so good. She's using lies at a regular basis, and she learned from the best.
Can honestly say I've never seen a redemption arc as good as Zuko's in media since. The Crossroads of Destiny made this moment so much sweeter

If the Earth King hadn't mistakenly told Azula about the plan, the Fire Nation wouldn't have known about the eclipse at all. This isn't common knowledge, it took using the calendar in an ancient spirit library to learn that. The plan might've actually worked if they weren't forewarned. (Though whether Aang could have done what he would have needed to is another question.)

30:15 Reminder, the fire nation didn't know about the eclipse and invasion until Azula heard about the plan back in Ba Sing Se when the earth king spilled the beans. Since the gang didn't know that Azula knew, they continued with the invasion plan.
Also another fun fact if it wasn’t brought up before, the fire lord is voiced by Mark Hamil, the man who played luke sky walked and voices the joker in the batman cartoons
Of course I understand your guy's criticisms for Zuko backsliding a lot but you have to understand just like with any addiction similar to drugs or alcohol sometimes it's too strong and just when you're getting clean is when you fall the hardest. Zuko since day one has been chasing for his father's approval up until this moment & even when he had everything; he wasn't happy as he expressed the day on the beach his eyes were opened to other possibilities; to his destiny kinda goes with what (kid) bumi said.
For the question of "how did Azula know?" The earthling told her when he thought she was one of the Kyoshi warriors back at the end of the last season.

I have been waiting for this episode since my guy said how great it would be for Zuko to join the Gaang in the first few episodes of the series!
This was the difference between Zuko at the end of season 2 vs now. Then, Zuko did one good thing and was such a drama Queen about that he had a fever and trippy ass dreams to make him feel different for a few days. Now, he’s finally gotten everything he wanted so badly for years - and realizes it’s all a lie. He had to come home for real to see how wrong it all was. This change was completely him, not uncle begging him to change.
The plan wasn't shit, it was just compromised. If Azula hadn't gone undercover as Kyoshi Warriors and took Ba Sing Se, got that info, this might've worked. But it's okay, it wasn't time. They have been saying from the beginning that Aang needs to learn fire bending first, so the time will come.
Let's say the Fire Nation didn't know the plan. Aang confronted Ozai in the most perfect of circumstances, such as in his bedroom, alone, on the Solar Eclipse. What then? Aang doesn't want to kill him, and he hasn't learned how to *SPOILERS* take his bending away. Ozai is still dangerous even if Toph found some way to put him in a metal cage, and Azula certainly would have plotted and succeeded in a rescue mission (remember, Zuko hasn't joined them yet).
No, it was, in fact, a good thing Aang never got the chance to confront Ozai on the Day of Slack Sun.

And it shows how powerful Firelord Ozai is, to be able to shoot lightning so quickly when only a small sliver of the sun is exposed. Azula is a prodigy but Ozai is a *master.*
Now you see that the writing for the season 2 finale was not bad writing. Zuko turning good at that point would have been too easy and predictable. He’s a complex character who needed to get what he wanted and realize it’s not what he needed. Plus we wouldn’t have gotten him confronting his father with such conviction about how the fire nation is on the wrong side of this war. This moment is when Zuko truly redeems his character. He’s finally no longer feeling confused and conflicted about what is right and wrong, this time choosing to follow the avatar *not to capture him* but *to help him defeat his father.*
Also, if you think about it, the invasion plan was set up to fail. We learned about the eclipse since The Library in the middle of season 2, which resulted in the loss of Appa and the GAang struggling with his absence. And now we’re here, with 2 episodes focused exclusively on the invasion itself with plenty of side characters returning for the fight. As the viewer, you *expect* to win this fight. The GAang has gone through so much to put together this mission. And the “Previously on Avatar” segment purposefully forgets to remind you that Azula knows about the invasion and probably told her father. All this effort is wasted because of one single person. So why dedicate so much detail and screen-time for a battle just to lose? Because *this is not a kids show.* You don’t *always* win the battle. The GAang won during the season 1 finale and lost the season 2 finale, but some of the consequences of that loss are undone in this instance: Zuko turned against the GAang there but sides with them here and Uncle Iroh gets imprisoned there but escapes here. And this loss feels more devastating here than in the season 2 finale, because they lost control of the earth kingdom there, but here their friends and family are left behind as prisoners of war while the GAang and some of the other kids escape. As the viewer, you realize that winning this war will be much more challenging than you expect, especially without many allies and the advantage of the solar eclipse. It’s brutal and unexpected.
That being said, every episode from this point onwards is *incredible.* It just sucks that it’s so short. When you realize how few episodes we get until the end of this series, you just want more episodes and stories traveling with the GAang. Glad to be here with you guys on this journey!
Azula is a master as well, so are Iroh and Jeong Jeong, hell even Zhao allegedly was XD.
@@gunchar06 That’s also true! They’re all firebending masters in their own right. I just think that Ozai seems more intimidating and powerful after this moment, because we haven’t really seen much of him engaging in any combat compared to the other firebending antagonists. Yes, he burned Zuko, but we don’t actually see it, thankfully. And in this moment when he decides to ruthlessly shoot lightning toward Zuko, he acknowledges that he’s not going to be as merciful as before, barely even giving his son a chance to defend himself. Ozai was ready to kill his own son and wouldn’t even feel an ounce of remorse. It really emphasizes how cruel and terrifying Ozai is as a villain.
This is still a kids’ show, but even kids need to learn you can’t win every battle

Don’t forget that the Fire Nation probably wouldn’t know about the eclipse until Azula told them. Team Avatar only found out about it by going to Wan Shi Tong’s library, so even if people know that eclipses shut off firebending, nobody knew when the next eclipse was coming

@@bigdogstatus4528 Iroh probably planned to break out that afternoon and it just so happened that the eclipse was on the same day. Remember, the metal bars of his cell were almost completely shattered. No matter how strong you are, it's going to be a struggle to even bend those bars until you have a space wide enough to slip through, much less shatter the entire grid if you don't have your own source of firepower with you at all times. He probably already left before the eclipse happened. He wasn't warning his guard about the eclipse, but about what he was going to do that afternoon. That an invasion distracted any more search parties from tracking him down was just luck.
I’m really glad that Zuko made that decision in Ba Sing Se or we wouldn’t have gotten that scene of him confronting his abuser and calling him out. It’s one of my favorite scenes ever in the series. I can’t see Zuko joining Team Avatar back in Ba Sing Se now. And the moment you realize that Ozai was going to kill Zuko because he didn’t count on Zuko to redirect it 😢.
yeah, without his betrayal back in the finale of book 2, we're not be able to see zuko's greatest speech in this episode.... that scene is one of my favourite moment in the entire series!
All the arguments you bring up at the end are great points. And I believe they are intentional holes in the plan. It was never going to work no matter what, simply because the team never sat down and thought it through to the end. Since the very moment they learned about the eclipse it has been a constant race against time, riddled with setbacks: The treck on foot across the desert all the way to Ba Sing Se after Appa was kidnapped, the wasted time and political infighting inside the city, the loss of the forces and strategic insight when Azula infiltrated it, and lately their constant fear of discovery while in Fire Nation territory... The actual plan never really progressed past the "that's the moment we HAVE to act" because they were too busy to make the invasion possible in the first place. They were so focused on the process itself that they overlooked the endgame entirely.
Plus, in reality they're just a few kids with little experience - but when the Avatar says "we have a plan", most people won't ask details and just focus on getting him where he wants to be. That might have been different with the generals that held the Earth King and their long term safety in higher regard, but anyone that ended up participating in the invasion was responsible for a small settlement at most and not used to consider nation-wide consequences.
Even if you managed to successfully kill or imprison the Fire Lord, that would just open the spot for someone else the public could rally behind to avenge this "act of terrorism against our great leader", as they would frame it (and yeah, that would likely be Azula, as you said). You'd have to somehow convince the people of the Fire Nation themselves that this whole war they grew up glorifying is a stupid idea cooked up by a megalomaniac... But how...?
Remember, Zhao thought he destroyed all information on the Fire Nation in the Library. As pompous as he was, he no doubt told Ozai to score points.
If the Earth King didn’t say anything to Azula, Ozai would have been in that room instead of her. The Avatar would have reached him, however as Gabriel said , Aang doesn’t have that killer instance. He would need to you killed on the spot.
The fire nation didn’t know they were vulnerable until azula found out in Ba Sing Se, when she infiltrated as a Kyoshi warrior and the earth king told her.

I was so hyped for this episode as a kid when it came out! "she's got plot armor" that's sharp I love it 😂 she's a pretty great villain. Legend of Korra has probably my favorite villian of any villain. Hope you guys watch, the animation evolves well.
This is easily, EASILY, my favorite reaction to The end of Zuko’s confrontation with Ozai. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to watch that scene again without hearing “BACK TO SENDER!” That made my day lmfao, I know these reactions were a while ago but this show was really my childhood and is one of my favorite things ever, and I’ve had the most fun watching it with you guys. - A metal bunker hidden inside a volcano was actually the perfect hiding spot during the eclipse, because there was only one person in the world who could actually reach them, and they didn't know about that person when designing the thing. Toph is the only one who could see into the mountain with Earth bending, and also the only one who could get through the doors with metalbending, two skills that no one else has.

The guy who told them where to go is War Minister Quinn, and he's seen in one episode per season. In season two he was piloting the drill, and in season one he was extorting The Mechanist at the Northern Air Temple.

Now you understand why everyone was so "comprehensive" with Zuko joining Azula in Ba Sing Se. We knew the pain was worth it.
- There's a subtle point about the Fire Lord here that most people miss.
We've wondered for three seasons how good the Fire Lord really is since we've never seen him do anything, and we actually got a very clear preview in this episode.
Only two other people have been shown wielding lighting, the top tier firebending technique... Iroh when doing a demonstration for Zuko and Azula on multiple occasions. Azula is a prodigy and possibly the most badass skilled character we've seen, but in order to cast lighting she goes through a whole sequence of movements to separate the positive and negative energies to cast one lightening bolt, which again not many people can do at all.
NOW we see the Fire Lord, when just a SLIVER of sun becomes visible after the eclipse, in one fast and fluid motion summons a separate bolt of lightening with each hand simultaneously, like it's nothing.
In this one moment, we see that he is not only powerful in a way we've never seen, but that he may be the most powerful living Firebender in the world, and that it's probably not even close.
I loved that moment, but have never seen anyone comment on it !

Kyoshi Warriors. They were disguised as Kyoshis when the Earth King told them the plan....
THe plan was the best they could do with their ressources, what other opportunity could they 've taken ? Earth Kingdom has fallen, they assembly all forces they could to strike during the eclipse and while most Fire nation forces are deployed all over the world and securing Ba sing Se.
I don't think they could 've done better.

It was the best plan they could have done, and might have worked if Azula didn't know. The Fire Nation is an island country and they have the strongest navy, they would have never expected a invasion coming.

The only way Azula knew about the invasion is because the Earth King stupidly and blindly told her when she was disguised as a Kyoshi Warrior
It was rash since it was a secret plan but Team Aang literally told the king that the Kyoshi warriors were close friends and can be trusted. How would he have known?
Plus the Earth king was really naive about being an actual responsible king. The Dai Li are despicable.

It would have been a good plan with the whole Earth Kingdom army. Then they could use the eclipse to invade with enough troops to actually occupy the capital. But this was just desperate. And they should have realized that Azula knew about the eclipse from pretending to be a Kyoshi warrior in Ba Sing Se. The king told her about it himself. The plan should have been an assassination realistically, but it's a nickelodeon show lol.
I feel they would’ve stuck to the whole invade before the eclipse as it still would’ve taken a while to go through the army. Plus you would want Aang to take advantage of every second of the eclipse to beat Ozai
