  • You all asked for it, a grammar lesson!! :-)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the "Hickok45 Talks" Channel. This channel is a place for me to just pontificate about random topics that somebody out there might find interesting. I will talk about firearms issues quite a lot, but I'll also exercise my license to talk about any topic I might pretend to know something about.
If you have a topic you'd like me to address, let me know. Doesn't mean I'll address it, but who knows, I might.
Thanks for your support, and I hope you'll subscribe to all three of our channels and keep up with all the brilliance here!!! :-)
    / @hickok45 - Our main channel.
/ @hickok45clips - Our channel where John pulls clips from our existing library of videos.
/ @hickok45talks - This channel where all material is new material where I talk about one specific topic in each relatively short video. Hope you enjoy.

Again, some of the best folks I've ever known (friends, family, & others) might not pass an English grammar test. It's not nearly the most important aspect of a person's life.
That said, if you are in a "professional" position of any sort where you are regularly communicating with other "professional" folks, you don't need any unnecessary limitations on your career potential.
It really depends on your career choices as much as anything. For a great percentage of folks, it's not going to matter one way or another.

I lost my first response. I was responding to your Hickok 45 channel about TH-cam trying to shut you down. I apologized about my sentence structure and punctuation. One thing I can say is that as a designer, draftsman for 25 years. All the trades people and the contractors really didn't give a f__. About my grammar. They knew when they had me working on a project that there would be no mistakes. I made more money than some of the architects in town. Mostly because I had actually built something. Instead of just passing tests and reading books. I'm very proud of myself. Even if I suck at English. Sometimes common sense and skills prevail. Just my 2 cents.

The "prescriptive grammarians" of the 1800's are the reason for that. Rather than observe how people really spoke, these prescriptive grammarians used Latin as a basis for rules. In Latin you cannot end a sentence with a preposition, or split an infinitive, but Germanic languages certainly can! English is a blend of Germanic and Romance (Latin based) languages.

I'm not a grammar nazi but there are some basics that kind of rub me the wrong way. For instance, improper use of the words to, too, and two. There, their, and they're. Then and than. However the one that really iritates me is when someone says, "I could care less." Honorable mention to the people who say, "Where are you AT?" Or, "Where are you at right now?"

Mr Hickock, if you write an english primer, I will buy it.
Our language and it’s lexicon are under assault ,both by indifference
and willful abuse for advertising or political ends.
The beauty and true value of this language is its ability to be extremely specific .
It’s at the core of this nation’s success. When the language is diminished, we are all diminished.
I don’t want to sound prudish. I love colloquialisms and a variety of twangs and drawls. Occasionally current slang is the best tool for the job ,but we need to preserve the ability to communicate accurately with full understanding.
Feel free to correct my essay. If’n youze a mind ta.😁 You done went and pushed my button.
Is it evil? That’s above my pay grade to answer.
If, in a moment’s inattention, for whatever reason, you run off the road into a tree or off a cliff, your not necessarily evil, your just dead or injured.

From one holder of a BA in English to another here is a bit of unsolicited advice. In her book, “Braving the Wilderness” Brene Brown makes an eloquent observation regarding fitting in vice belonging. She asserts that fitting in requires meeting the expectations of others and compromising who you really are while belonging keeps you integral to your true self. When you receive comments that strike you as mean spirited remember this: Fitting in compromises you and cedes power to another. Belonging affirms acceptance by others who value who you are. I’m a fan of yours and enjoy your channel especially when I’ve just returned from the range. Best regards, Wally

A lot of what has happened to our language may come down to what has happened to society in general. Laziness, uncaring, certain influences that have bastardized the language. The dumbing down of society surely contributed to this, as well. Let's give everyone a medal or ribbon, whether deserved or not. We reap what we sow. When you make something easily attainable that should be a struggle, this is what you get.

The "prescriptive grammarians" of the 1800's are the reason for several artificial "rules." Rather than observe how people really spoke, these prescriptive grammarians used Latin as a basis for rules. In Latin you cannot end a sentence with a preposition, or split an infinitive, but Germanic languages certainly can, and do, to good effect! English is a blend of Germanic and Romance (Latin based) languages - thanks (?) to the Norman Conquest of 1066. One seemingly highly artificial construct are the rules for will/shall as they flip and flop for 1st person singular and plural.

If you don't know which fork to use, you cannot eat at the country club and can only eat at the hot dog stand. So good grammar and good manners allow one to make choices. Correct, and that's also an excellent way to get a verb's proper forms drilled into your head. We used to conjugate them, as well, but I discovered that it was less like "drilling" or busy work for the kids if they made up sentences using the various forms of the verb. It gave them a chance to be silly and creative, and they enjoyed reading them out loud, maybe making fun of me a little in something they wrote.
I had some rules, of course, with any of our creative writing. They could make fun of ME, as long as it was in fun and not mean, but they could not make fun of anybody else in the building, including other students or teachers. That can get out of hand in a hurry, and something that is meant to be harmless can be really insulting to some classmate.

The two biggest things for most regular shooters if they don't take precautions are hearing loss and cumulative lead poisoning. Many folks don't realize that they need to really wash their hands after shooting, especially when handling non-jacketed lead ammo. Beyond those the next most common issues are sun exposure and insect bites and insect-borne diseases such as lyme disease. Some folks might say arthritis and repetitive stress injuries but there are so many other common activities that are just as bad and have longer exposure times. Most folks can't afford to shoot enough over a lifetime to be in danger of this unless they are in the industry.

Yep, I speak pretty informally myself. "Like I said," though, it's those really "bad boys" you want to work out of your brain if you can, the ones that are definitely going to hit some ears hard in certain environments. Improper uses of "like" or "whom" or "lay" and such are much farther down the list than "should have ran" or "would have ate," etc. :-)

I grew up pronouncing “wash” (or “Washington”, etc.) as if it has an “r” in it, mostly because everyone in my part of the country says it this way. Actually, this is not necessarily incorrect (check your dictionary), but I was able to fix this. It’s hard to break these habits.

My boss always says “Have ran”! Drives me crazy. We’re engineers, though. 😊
