I have a friend who was married for over 10 years and divorced many years ago without knowledge of getting benefits off of ex-husband's ss benefits. The ss benefit he is receiving is more than her measly $1,000 per month, and she is struggling. I will share this information with her. It can't hurt to see if she can receive more. Thanks for the education. 😊
Wow, you really are pumping out some great videos! I almost need a Slowdown speed button. LOL I appreciate all the information and we'll try to pass it along
Absolutely warms my heart when men love their wives and families that much and want to take care of them until the end of time. My ex husband is Disabled with MS and was very upset our boys got to collect off his SSDI because it would take money out of his pocket he worked for. I have been on SSDI for 14 years for multiple compassionate allowances and now terminal, he called our local SSA office and told them that bitch better not be able to take any of my money. I sure hope I can lol, just out of spite 😂
Yes, my grieving father in law lost his wife, and then the next month the government deducted her $600 check amount from his social security! I've never looked at government any way but adversarial after that... disgusting.
I have enjoyed Parts 1 and 2 of your Social Security videos. So much vital information for everyone. Would it be possible for you to answer the following in Part 3? I am a former educator of 35 years. My husband passed in 2018. I filed for surviving spousal benefits that year and was not eligible due to the Windfall Provision. I do draw a pension from the state and county where I worked. Questions: Will I need to refile once the President signs the SS Fairness Act into law or will the SS Admin still have my filing on record? Will the spousal benefits be retroactive back one year? If I need to refile, how long should I wait? Thank you for sharing your expertise with all of us.
I have never heard anyone on TH-cam discussing SSA Survivor Benefits bring up a crucial piece of information about Widows FRA being four (4) months less than a regular FRA. For those born after 1/1/1938 and before 1/2/1962, the widow's full retirement age (FRA) is 4 months earlier than the normal FRA.
I am so glad you mentioned this! I retired under this assumption and Social Security is trying to bill me over $3000 because of their miscalculation my full retirement age.
My husband passed to glory towards the end of the month and the social security administration took back what they had deposited on the first. Never deposited another cent but they sent tax documents stating I had to pay taxes on January and February payments and a death benefit I never received. His government pension did the same (minus the death benefit). It was brutal at tax time. Dont understand why this happens since they borh are paid a monrh after the fact. Feb 1 payment is for January, is it not? You become eligible the first of the month AFTER your retirement age and you get you first check the month after that.
My husband died at age 60 in 2016, went to social security when I was 58 at the time and they said I don't qualify for widows benefits at all. low an behold I called about my social security benefits because I received a letter from S. S. this past December 2024 that I can now at 66 & 8 months apply for it even if I keep on working, so I called in December 2024 to understand if this was correct and it was. So the person also mentioned: You qualify as of August 2024 for Widows Benefits and it's retro back to August and this is the amount of $$$ you qualify for and you can continue to get widows benefits until you switch over to yours when ready to retire, you just have to make an appointment for this. I called this past Monday since I never got a call for a phone appointment and the person yesterday said you don't qualify for widows benefits, What the heck is going on? Some reps say I do others say I don't what is the true answer? If I do qualify and accept the widows benefits, will it lower mine when I'm ready to retire which is more???? Please help me understand. Thank you!!!!!
Ed. I called the SS office, and I was told that I could not retire midyear and collect my deceased husband 's benefit because I make more than allowed. I have to wait until January.
3:23pm. My husband and I married twice. Ist time in 1977, divorced in 1996, remarried in 2002. He passed away 12/14/2023. I'm 65 and still working but want to apply for spousal benefits at my FRA which is 66 and 10 months. Here's the big question... Am I eligible for the widows benefits because we remarried before I was 60? I was 43 when I remarried him and was married to him for 22 years the 2nd time, when he passed away. He's the only person I ever married
Dr. Ed, I am 74 next month, my spouse is 48. I retired at 62. I will surely die before her. We have been married for 15 years, so far. When I pass, maybe at 80 or 85, God willing, at what age would she need to be to file for survivor benefits? She has worked 10 plus years so far? Just asking for future reference. What percent might she get since I retired early? Thanks for your time. You are definitely the best source I’ve found on this subject.

if I start collecting widow's benefits at age 60 and continue to work at my job making $50,000 can I just repay any overpayment each year if I work a few more years
I wish you could have an answer to my predicament. My late husband retired after 30 years of teaching here in Washington State. When he signed up for his pension he was divorced and his children were grown. Unfortunately he decided to have his pension fund with the DRS only left to a beneficiary, as opposed to survivorship. Therefore I got a onetime pay out of $470 Dollars. I’ve completely lost his pension. DRS will not make an exception, and no lawyers will take DRS on ! Do you have any suggestions?

My question is if your married before 60 to someone else after you divorce your late husband but divorce again am I still elegible to collect Spousal survival benefit?
I'm a bit late to the party but I'll ask a QUESTION anyway in the hope that someone knows the ANSWER. Ed mentions WIDOW benefits are AUTOMATIC IF the WIDOW is already receiving SPOUSAL benefits. BUT, is it AUTOMATIC when the WIDOW has not yet ATTAINED the “Full Retirement Age for Survivor benefits”? Being younger than the “Full Retirement Age for Survivor benefits”, the widow would received LESS than 100% - right? It seems to me the WIDOW needs to make a decision: Should I claim a reduced WIDOW benefit now, or, wait until I attain the “Full Retirement Age for Survivor benefits”. Or, is that decision not available the WIDOW in this case? Example: Number holder claims SSA at 70 followed by their 63 year old spouse claiming spousal benefit as the spouse does not have their own work benefit. Number holder suddenly dies 1 year later. The widow, born 1960 and now 64 years old, and will not qualify for 100% of the deceased benefit until age 66Y8M. The widow WANTS to wait until 66Y8M to claim 100% of the deceased spouse's benefit rather than receive a reduced benefit. How does the WIDOW tell social security NOT to do the AUTOMATIC switchover? 🙏📿🙏
Hi Ed. My husband died in 2020, married in 2014. I got disability in 2019. Can i get survivor benefits. His dad did his death cert and named his girlfriend as spouse. There was never a divorce. Can i get the lump sum and monthly benefits.
An unusual technical question, I'm helping someone explore their survivor benefits: In the AnyPIA software, what is the "PIA at entitlement" shown in the "Re-Indexed Widow (1983 Act)" output?
Hi Ed. My husband started collecting SS at his FRA of 65. I started at 62. I'm now over my FRA. If he passes 1st, will I receive 100% or a reduced amt of his? His is 2.4 times more than mine. Thanks..
I was told by SS by 2 different workers that my survival/widows benefit will be 100% of what my husband would have gotten if he waited for FRA and not 100% of what he was getting..He retired at 62..but they both told me after figuring all the calculations that no, I wouldn't be getting 100% of what he was currently getting..that I would get 100% of what he WOULD HAVE gotten at full retirement age.and yes, I am 70 so at my FRA. I had my interview with one and she told me that is what I was getting. I had no idea and hadn't heard this anywhere before, so I called and spoke with another worker and they told me the same thing..
So it sounds like you are already receiving survivor benefits. It's normally reduced if he took retirement early. If he was receiving disability benefits, then it won't be reduced.
Wow! Thanks for this information. I am 55 surviving spouse of a disabled veteran and care for our Disabled adult child. I receive social security survivors benefits for me snd my son. I am contemplating filing for disability due to my car accident and thyroid/ arthritis. I really need it for the Medicare because the medical bills are killing me. I have Champ VA but adding Medicare would be a blessing. Can I set up a one on one with you or a Q&A?
I'm doing a long series on disability now. First 2 parts already uploaded...more to come. I'm doing very limited calls but have to charge for those. You can request a time in one of the video descriptions. Take care
I'll need more help concerning not only divorced spouse benefits I'm on disability. My age is 58, and I'm not sure if it's been 2 years yet. Yes I was married 14 almost 15 years. He took the kids the house. We agreed to share custody, so I left Alaska to be closer to family to heal. only to find out he said he hired a lawyer for divorce and used our 2 kids against me. Since 2007 I'm still working on fixing and repairing my relationship with my kids without blaming their dad. He died. I was forced to give my youngest to his family. I'm in counseling, stopped drinking, and am back on track. Dr.Weir help
I began collecting wep reduced benefits one year ago at 68. I was not eligible to collect survivvors benefits because of my government pension. I applied about 3 weeks ago for survivior benefits ahead of gpo repeal. Now that gpo has been repealed, shouldn’t I get back pay of the survivor benefits back to when I started receiving my own benefits?
I like it!! Interesting title! lol A bit of darkish humor...the Marine Corps Sergeant in me appreciates that! I told my wife just to buy a new fridge when I died...they come in a big box!
Dr Ed- Great information. I haven't seen any information yet on how SSDI affects survivors benefits amounts. My husband was on collecting SSDI for 3 years due to ALS. We were married for 4 years when he died. He was 46 at time of death. I have not remarried, I will be 60 Oct 2024. I am looking at filing for survivor benefit either at 60 or 61. What effect will his taking SSDI be to my benefit amount? I am wondering if his SSDI amount at time of death is the amount that my survivor benefits will be based. Or rather will SSA figure the amount to be what he would have if he had lived to FRA? Or something else. Thank you.
When I went to the Social Security office to file for surviving spouse benefits after the death of my husband, I was told by the young lady behind the desk that I was ineligible because I was not an American citizen. I think she must have been new to the job.
@@lseh4720I believe you get the difference of the higher. Say your spouse’s benefits is 3000 and yours in 2500. You’ll get the difference of 500 to get 3000. But if your benefits is higher then your spouse, you would not see a difference.
When I reported my husbands death to SS because he was a veteran receiving benefit from a Pact Act 100% disabled and a year of SSDI. SS said because we were only married 7months that I didn’t make the cut off. But I heard common law which we have been together 11yrs.
Check your state for laws of common law marriages. Ohio stopped them in 1991 so none here now. My dad and step mom was together 27 years and they said jump this way that way and still refused to give her off my father's ss. Even 10 years of original tax papers. They only asked for copies from irs. But we found original ones and still denied her. Our government sucks.
My husband passed away at age 48 while on social security disability due to end stage renal disease. We were married for 21 years. No kids, I’m working, and not remarried. I would like to plan and claim widow/survivor benefits when I reach age 60. Will I be entitled to his social security benefit? And what percentage?
Dr.ed my husband just recently passed away at age 63 i am 61 going 62 in September. I got letter from ssa saying i am only in tilted to the $255 at this time and my husband was the bread winner . I only get $415 a week. They said i could appeal this case in 60days.

What about a surviving spouse in their 60’s that cannot work to full retirement age due to disabilities. are their any additional financial help in addition to survivor benefits that are forced to retire earlier than FRA?
Different info from 3 different people at SSA. I am a widow. Married over 30 years. My DOB is 3\11\58. My late spouses benefit is more than mine and I will collect his benefit amount. I work full time and am planning on retiring in the spring. I had 2 gentleman tell me I should have been receiving benefits starting last July. But one told me not to because I wouldn't be my FRA so then my benefit would be less. Does this make sense? Thanks for any help!

Under SS Survivorship program and guidelines, does the surviving spouse recieve 100% of their own (and current collecting) monthly benefit, PLUS 100% of the amount their deceased spouse entitles them to recieve? In other words, the suriving spouse gets TWO full retirement benefits based on their entitlement. Or, is there a calculated deduction or negative offset based on the higher earning spouses benefit, which is similair to a spousal auxiliary (top-up) rules? ~ Thank You. - Ken 🙂

Both surviving spouses (of ten year or more marriage) current spouse and x-spouse, can both apply for the survivor benefits. They do not effect each other.
My husband is 83, filed for ss at 70. I am going to be 65 in 2025. My question is: if I begin collecting ss at 65, when he dies will I get a reduced amount of his monthly ss check because I filed early, even tho he waited until 70? Family member trying to get replacement Social Security Card in Austin, TX. Has tried for the past 6 months. Multiple visits to the SSA office, told was held up for possible fraud, then asked him to bring in his parents birth certificates AND his birth certificate, then told card was released, then told in review, etc... NOT getting help at the SSA office, what can he do? Thanks
I called SS Office to ask to speak to a T2CS The lady that took the call said she knew the answer. She said I could not get widow benefits or my daughter survivor benefits because my SSDI was more than his record so I’d just get the bigger of the two which is mine. Is that true? Even for my daughter? It’s like I had a kid with no one?!? In two weeks I’ll be a 50 yr old disabled widow with an 11yrs old. I became permanently disabled in 2012 My husband passed at 42 in 2015. We had a 14 month old at the time. They said she couldn’t get anything from his passing because she was already collecting from me and mine was higher because teachers don’t pay in to SS in TX
I'm sorry for your loss and your situation. I'm sure you probably wouldn't qualify for mother's benefits until your daughter turned 16 either then, since your SSDI PIA is higher. Guess it wouldn't hurt to call and ask them if you have the time. Good luck to you and your little girl 🤗🙏
I'm on SSDI with widows benefits and I'm disabled, I'm 59 and I was told that I had to wait until I turned 60 to remarry, but you say that I could have been married again before next year?
My mom called today, she turns 60 in 2025. SS told her she was not able to claim WIB since my Dad, he died in 2013 at 48, was ineligible. He was on SSD and had worked for over 25 years at a high paying job. We are so confused.

Does Social Security use your gross pay or reported W-2 wages to find out whether you are under or over the yearly earnings limit? For example, the 2024 income limit is $22,320. Does she have to work the 10 years for 40 work credits or will she be able to use mine if something were to happen to me? Also would she get the 100 percent or just 50 percent if ex wife from previous claims off me? I was married to ex for around 15 years and current for around 14.

Sir, I would like to thank you for creating these videos. I just by chance stumbled upon this one (and part one). I am 57yrs old, and currently receiving my Social Security (disability). I am also receiving VA disability. Last October my wife of 29yrs passed. She was 56, and not receiving her social security. I watched your video and still not sure if I can file for her SS benefit now? Thank you in advance
Hi Dr Ed. I am 60. My husband started collecting at his FRA of 65. He passed away when he was 78. Are my survivors benefit amount based on his SS amount at 65 or when he died at 78? We were still married when he died.
Hi Ed, Could you make this clear in a video. My husband received a dissabilty benefit before age 60. He died at age 59. I am 60 and would like to collect widows benefit. Was his dissabilty benefit a reduced benefit of his FRA? Would his benefit have a Widows cap on it of 82.5% and such I should take his benefit at my age of 62 1/2 instead of waiting until my FRA? If there is a Widows Cap- then does this mean 82.5% of his “At death amount benefit?” Thank you dearly for your Vidoes!!
You would receive benefits based on his full benefit amount at his full retirement age The only reduction would be due to you taking it early. If you waited until your full retirement age, you would receive 100% of his full retirement age benefit. Hope that helps, Ed
Thanks for all you do I just found you about a month ago I am disabled and drawing off my account my husband of 44 years passed in 2021 I called and told them the lady told me I could draw his when I got 661/2 because it would be the higher amount I started getting 174. for his I really wasn't expecting it I called ss and asked if I needed to do anything because June is my full retirement but she said I signed a paper back then and I couldn't get his I'm confused
Yes, that's common. You CAN file for benefits from a spouse or ex-spouse, but it might not get you any more money. I would give SSA a call again and confirm the amounts.
Hi, Great videos. If you are under 60 and receiving child survivor benefits until the child reaches 18 what can you do when you turn 60? The child survivor benefits don't impact your possible survivor benefits that you could start at 60, correct? Spouse was not taking any benefits (died young). Also, it seems like you have choices at 60 - you can take either a reduced survivor benefit and wait to take your benefit until it grows to a larger amount OR wait until 62 and take your own reduced benefit and let the survivor benefit grow if it will grow to more than your benefit. Is that a good understanding? Thanks you!

Hello, I have a quick question. I’m a survival spouse and I have a daughter under 16. I started collecting survival benefits in 2022 at the age of 54. They told me my benefits are going to stop because my daughter is turning 16 in February 20 25. I don’t quite understand why I’m 57 now they told me I had to wait till I turned 60 to get my full retirement surviving benefits from my spouse. We both get 1500 hundred each. How do I know if I’m getting the right amount my husband work for over 35 years before he passed away from Covid in 2021. I live now in Arkansas, but my husband‘s work history before he passed away were California wages. He never worked hearing Arkansas because surely after we arrived here in Arkansas he passed away, basically his income is based California wages. But I’m collecting here in Arkansas. Can you help? My daughter’s check will continue but not mine. What I’m concerned is am I getting the right amount? Can you help?

I may have missed it, but if a spouse took their SS benefit before their FRA and their spouse dies, will their survivor benefit be reduced by the same percentage of their current benefits.
My husband died at 64 and I am 61 still working. My pay is about 5,000 over eligibility requirements. Should I take my own retirement at 62 (1,000) and wait til full retirement age to collect survivor benefits?
Am I restricted to only go to the SS office in my county? Can I go to any SS office? This would be for questions or get information or report something? It may be for parking difficulties, or transportation, or personnel issues, etc. Thank you for the videos

Well Done, I have question. I am a widower at Full retirement age and I am receiving my deceased spouse survival benefit ( which my wife was getting from age 62 until she passed at 64 1/2). I am receiving ( as you explained) 82.5% of her full benefit . I am still working full time and want to continue earning credits to maximize my benefit by age 70. Why doesn’t So Islip security post my accruing benefit like it use too before I took a spousal benefit? My benefit accrual , since there is no deeming requirement, shouldn’t change ?
Your recent work, if it's your high 35 years, should reflect in your online account If not, just call SSA and they'll give you your numbers including your DRCs. Hope that helps, Ed

@@edwardloizides5415I have been wondering the same. I just got the approval for my SS and now I can no longer see the age scale and amounts at different ages. Kinda makes me mad even though it won't change, but I would like to view it for myself.

At my appointment in March I was told that I could do this and to call back in August to have the application filed. When I called to file the application the representative was addiment that I could either receive my own early at 62 or my reduced survivors benefit and it could never be switched. When I asked to speak with someone else since I was getting conflicting advice I was hung up on. I am 99.9 % sure she was wrong but I don't want to make a $2,000 a month mistake. I was married to my exhusband for 28 years, sadly he passed away at the age of 59 yrs in 2022, before retirement age. Can I file for surviver benefits on his record when I reach retirement age, since I'm no longer married to my second husband?

I am receiving survivor benefits from my ex-husband. He died two years ago. I was not married at the time. If I remarry, would I lose those benefits? I am 78 years old probably too old to even think about getting married again… Lol.
Thank you for these videos! My husband passed away at 54 and I am 51. I have a couple of questions if you have time. 1) As far as I can tell a widow cannot draw benefits any earlier than 60, unless they have a disability or some extenuating circumstance, correct? 2) If I have more invested in SSI, would it be best to start drawing out on my survivors benefit at 60 and then wait to draw mine at 67?
Correct, you can't start benefits at fifty unless you're disabled. I really don't want to give you any financial advice in a comment like this without knowing the numbers.
Can I collect my own ss and when my ex spouse passes switch to survivors benefits on his record. Or if i collect on his benefits at 62 can I switch to survivors if he passes?
I believe as long as you're still married to the second husband you cannot. But once you're no longer married I believe you can. It's for sure we're checking into.
I have applied for social security survivor benefits recently in last month , my husband passed away at the age 35,he worked for 8 years and contributed to social,Me and my husband are legal residents in usa, currently I am outside united states and don't have valid visa to stay in usa ,I have 2 kids both are US citizens,my application for Survivor child benefits got denied, currently I am unemployed . my both kids are under 16 years , we are outside united states .could you please help me how can I appeal ssa for request for reconsideration
Is there a scenario where I would not take spousal but instead take my lower paying benefit on my own record at 62 in order to maximize a survivors benefit at 67 in case my husband passes away before I am 67. I am 12 years younger. I am assuming that if we take spousal benefit at my age 62 then survivors would kick in automatically at a reduced amount if I am not yet 67. Husband is already receiving benefits and he started collect at his FRA.
If he is already receiving benefits then you can file for benefits on your own record, and then file for spouse benefits now or latter. The surviving spouse benefit will automatically increase based on when he passes regardless of when you started your spouse benefit.

Social Security denied my $255 benefit because I didn't apply within a year. I had talked with social security, but apparently didn't ask for it so I was out. That's ok, but mention the limited time period for others.
My husband passed away at age 27 in 1985. My children Received survivor benefits.I however chose not to At that time. I am 60 now. I have read that there's a new rule going into effect in 2024 for Surviving spousal benefits . I was wondering if you knew anything of this new rule? I was reading on social security website that I can receive 100% of his and 75 % off mine. What my questions are: 100% of what? the baseline that he would have received at age 62 or is it based on whatever age i retire? And If I delay receiving Survivor benefits, does that amount increase? Each each year like it has in the past?. Also can I still start to receive on his benefits while waiting on mine to increase or do I have to file at the same time?
You can’t claim yours until your 62 you can only get your late husband’s at 60 but if you are still working you can only make 22,300 a year otherwise for every $2 over that a $1 will be taken from your benefit
Hello, Dr. Weir, thank you for all of the info you share. I'm hoping my situation is without variables! I'm 62 as of this past Feb. My husband passed in 2022 and was at FRA and collecting 100% of his benefit. I work and earn over $22k yearly. ●Should I wait until I'm FRA to collect 100% of his benefit (which will always be higher than mine) ?
I was getting. my full retirement at 65 my husband and I separated for 20 years no divorce he pass 2019 at the age of 82 with disabilities he was getting disabilities social security was I suppose to get 100 percent of his benefits his earnings was. Much higher than mind
If a man has 4 wives, 3 divorced and 1 current. He dies. Each divorced woman has been married 10+ years. Do all 3 qualify for the Survivor Benefits? So each exwife would get 100% of the benefit assuming all of them reach FRA? That is 400% payout from 1 worker.
Hi, Dr. Ed. My late husband had glioblastoma and started receiving the disability social security benefits before his full retirement age. He died 2 months ago, I'm 60 now and don't work, he needed 24 by 7 care. What percentage of survival benefits I'm allowed at 67 which is my full retirement age - 82.5 % (since he started before his FRA) or 100%? Thank you

Thank you!! More to come!!
I have a friend who was married for over 10 years and divorced many years ago without knowledge of getting benefits off of
ex-husband's ss benefits. The ss benefit he is receiving is more than her measly $1,000 per month, and she is struggling. I will share this information with her. It can't hurt to see if she can receive more. Thanks for the education. 😊
Perfect! We need many more millions like you to look out for people in need!! Thank you and take care, Ed
Wow, you really are pumping out some great videos! I almost need a Slowdown speed button. LOL I appreciate all the information and we'll try to pass it along
You're so welcome! I'm just getting started, Take care, Ed
You seem like such a nice man. The story of the widow with binder made me cry . Real love ❤️. Reminded me of my husband he always took care of me.
Thank you! Me too...but I think I did a pretty good job of not choking up....or maybe not. Take care of yourself, Ed
Can I apply from my ex-husband survivor benefits in Canada last year I start my benefits over here and Oneida state
Thank you so much for this clear explanation
Absolutely warms my heart when men love their wives and families that much and want to take care of them until the end of time. My ex husband is Disabled with MS and was very upset our boys got to collect off his SSDI because it would take money out of his pocket he worked for. I have been on SSDI for 14 years for multiple compassionate allowances and now terminal, he called our local SSA office and told them that bitch better not be able to take any of my money. I sure hope I can lol, just out of spite 😂
Congratulations The video really clear super professional im widow survivor my question i need to retired this year at 67 i need to file thank you.
Yea, I'm getting a little better at the whole TH-cam thing!
Yes, my grieving father in law lost his wife, and then the next month the government deducted her $600 check amount from his social security! I've never looked at government any way but adversarial after that... disgusting.
But now he can get a chunk of it back. They just passed that law on part 1 I guess he told about it.
Another question what about if deceased ex husband was on SS Dis? Not retire early but became disabled on hes 50?
I appreciate everything Dr. Weis. Thank you😊❤
God bless you and thank you very much for your caring ways.
What about a person that got married in other country the marriage certificate has to be translated to English ?

Example:
Number holder claims SSA at 70 followed by their 63 year old spouse claiming spousal benefit as the spouse does not have their own work benefit.
Thank you for the tip on not needing a death certificate!
You're welcome!
Hi Ed. My husband died in 2020, married in 2014. I got disability in 2019. Can i get survivor benefits. His dad did his death cert and named his girlfriend as spouse. There was never a divorce. Can i get the lump sum and monthly benefits.
Thank you so much for your teaching, sir.

An unusual technical question, I'm helping someone explore their survivor benefits:
In the AnyPIA software, what is the "PIA at entitlement" shown in the "Re-Indexed Widow (1983 Act)" output?
Thank you!
You're welcome!
You really are AWESOME!
Wow, thank you!
Take care
Hi, if you can get the Medicare you will be amazed Medicare and Champva together are like a match made in Heaven for coverage.
I'll do my part.. thank you for letting us know 🙏 ❤
I'll need more help concerning not only divorced spouse benefits I'm on disability.

The notebook story was great. I plan on creating a binder for my wife jokingly called the BBOD. The Big Book Of Death. It will have everything.

Yea, that's not right at all! If you are a legal resident then you are eligible to apply.
You suppose to be an USA citizen to be eligible for SSA benefits.
If I am 80-years old and my ex-husband of 25 years passed away, am I entitled to my own social security PLUS a widow’s benefit? Thank you.
@@lseh4720I believe you get the difference of the higher.

You might get help through the VA. Can't hurt to ask. Best wishes.
My husband passed away at age 48 while on social security disability due to end stage renal disease. We were married for 21 years. No kids, I’m working, and not remarried. I would like to plan and claim widow/survivor benefits when I reach age 60. Will I be entitled to his social security benefit? And what percentage?
@@dj2844 If you take Survivor benefits at 60, you'd get 71.5%, if you waited until your FRA, it'd be 100%. If you took it at 65, it'd be over 90%.

I called SS Office to ask to speak to a T2CS
The lady that took the call said she knew the answer.
I became permanently disabled in 2012
My husband passed at 42 in 2015.

For example, the 2024 income limit is $22,320. And on your W-2 your gross pay was $25,000. But your reported W-2 wages are $18,000. Because you paid pre-tax dollars for health insurance. Thanks for your help!

Thanks you!

Hi Dr. Ed. A friend of mine in Indonesia has been advised that because Indonesia does not have a totalization agreement with the U.S. that she can only claim 'Survivor Benefits' if she becomes a citizen of the U.S. or anoyjer country that has an agreement with the U.S. Is this correct? and is there a time limit on when she can claim? Thank you in advance

Sorry for the typos
I am collecting survivor benefits and plan to switch to my own when I turn 70. Will I need to go into the office to switch or can I do this online? Also is there a way to find out how much I will receive without applying. Because I am receiving survivor benefits they do not show my amount. Thank you!
Hi Dr Ed...My husband just passed away last November. He was getting his SS and VA check monthly. Nothing has been automatic with SS for me and they were fast to grab that last check right out of the bank! Advise?

I may have missed it, but if a spouse took their SS benefit before their FRA and their spouse dies, will their survivor benefit be reduced by the same percentage of their current benefits.
Probably not because you got older, therfore fewer reduction months.

I want to ask about the windfall act. My husband worked 20 years and paid into ss. Then 26 years with a company that had a pension plan but they didn’t contribute to ss. He is 70 and received a small amount 500. A month. Can they reduce him now?

Well Done,
I have question.
@@MyGovExpert thank you. It shows my earnings for my years since I began working 40 years ago but no longer my estimated benefit if I continue to wait. I assume I’m getting the credits (8% per year) as I wait . I will call them.
Will you please share your final results? I am in the same situation. Thank you
@@sheryllegg845 I have not had time to call however I was told by my financial advisor that my benefit is not affected by my taking my wife’s full death benefit ( my survivors benefit) . My benefit will continue to accrue over time as it normally would until age 70. At that time I will take my full benefit and not take the survivors benefit .
@@edwardloizides5415I have been wondering the same. I just got the approval for my SS and now I can no longer see the age scale and amounts at different ages. Kinda makes me mad even though it won't change, but I would like to view it for myself.
I was widowed at 51 and retired at 60. I planned to take my early benefits at 62 which is three months away then switch over to survivor benefits around 67 at FRA or anytime between 62-67 at reduce benefit. Any advice would be helpful,

I am a Canadian but lived in the US for many year and payed into SS but was short 2 quarters to collect but, my wife that passed away in January of 2024 was collecting SS. How do I collect benefits as my funeral provide does not know how to send the funeral info to SS. Please help! PS my wife fell and broke her hip they were unable to operate due to liver issues.
If she was collecting Social Security, then they already have death Certificate. So I would call SSA and file a survivor claim.
@@MyGovExpert I talked to the funeral company here in Canada but they have no way to send a death certificate to SS. What can I do I have a number of Death Certs.
@@thomasmarshall2007Why don't you get the original certified death certificate from the funeral home and contact social security office yourself. Her death should have been reported and benefits stopped. If not those benefits will have to be paid back. Like Dr Ed said, SSA should have been notified and then you can file on hers.
I was married for 15 years until we divorced many years ago. I retired few years ago and receive my retirement benefits from the SSA. My ex spouse is still working and has a good life. I saw your video in TH-cam that interest me to know if I'm entitled to spousal benefit also. Thanks
If he is at least 62 years old and it doesn't matter whether he already filed for benefits, you can collect spouse benefits if his benefit is twice your full benefit amount.
I am 66, and about 2-3 years ago I started receiving spousal benefits, now divorced and my ex just passed away. Can I still apply for survivor benefits? We were married for 36 years.

I did but there eere so many questions that you were not able to answer mine. Thank you anyway, God bless you for all you do!🙂
If u draw off dead husband n remarry at 60fir one year. Can u draw off both
No
How do they come to a number for spouse on the 71% to 99% if the worker retired at 70 but spouse is 62? Is there a specific calculation?
Yes
I am receiving survivor benefits from my ex-husband. He died two years ago. I was not married at the time. If I remarry, would I lose those benefits? I am 78 years old probably too old to even think about getting married again… Lol.
You're fine at your age. You have to be 60 or older to get remarried 😊
You can start yours. And then when he passes, you can add those benefits on top of yours.
Dr Ed, my husband died at age 25, I m now 73, can I still receive survivor benefits. I do receive SSA now and remarried but separated. Thank you!
I believe as long as you're still married to the second husband you cannot. But once you're no longer married I believe you can. It's for sure we're checking into.
I would definitely call and see if there are any more benefits on his record
Hold on! Your husband passway at 25 and you were married 10yrs?
I have applied for social security survivor benefits recently in last month , my husband passed away at the age 35,he worked for 8 years and contributed to social,Me and my husband are legal residents in usa, currently I am outside united states and don't have valid visa to stay in usa ,I have 2 kids both are US citizens,my application for Survivor child benefits got denied, currently I am unemployed . my both kids are under 16 years , we are outside united states .could you please help me how can I appeal ssa for request for reconsideration
Sorry to hear that. Please submit a Reconsideration SSA561 to your local FBU (Federal Benefits Unit). Good luck
I watched all your videos on social Security spousal, death, benefits, and none of your videos talk about my specific situation. I seem to be unique.

Just high school.

Social Security denied my $255 benefit because I didn't apply within a year. I had talked with social security, but apparently didn't ask for it so I was out. That's ok, but mention the limited time period for others.
I was told my x spouse had to be deceased
My husband passed away at age 27 in 1985.
My children Received survivor benefits.I however chose not to At that time. I am 60 now. I have read that there's a new rule going into effect in 2024 for Surviving spousal benefits . I was wondering if you knew anything of this new rule? I was reading on social security website that I can receive 100% of his and 75 % off mine. What my questions are:
100% of what? the baseline that he would have received at age 62 or is it based on whatever age i retire?
Absolutely! One wouldn't affect the other.
Hi, Dr. Thank you
He was on disability so the widows cap won't apply. But when you collect early, it's almost always reduced.
Thank you! @@MyGovExpert
No that’s wrong. You can get 82.5% a lot earlier than 67
