    I think the chance of messing up the pump due the high amount of adrenaline while in the middle of a gunfight is much higher than the chances of a semi auto having a malfunction.

    • @thebadgersdenvaletudoclub6254
      @thebadgersdenvaletudoclub6254 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Actually, no. It depends on ammunition and the quality of semi auto. Many semi auto shotguns will fail to eject or fail to feed if you don't run high velocity ammo or if using old paper shell ammo. Magazine fed bullpup models will sometimes have magazine failures too. Slam the pump back hard and you shouldn't have a failure.

    The most common mistake I see with people trying to run a pump action gun is that they're afraid of breaking it. Best way to run a pump action gun (or a bolt action gun if that's what you have) is to work it like it owes you some serious money. If it breaks in practice, consider another design. If it works, then learn the gun and its quirks.

    Pump for home defense. They are not ammo sensitive and in the event you do get a jam it's much easier to clear. I will say that a Mossberg is marginally better for reliability, I know a lot of people like Remingtons and they are decent but the Mossberg has an open shell port for the magazine during a high stress situation and it has dual extractors on the bolt to get a secure grip on the shell.

  • @wayneparker9331

    I own the same model 12 gauge pump shotgun (Mossberg 590A1) with the 8+1 shell capacity. I also own a 12 gauge Remington 11-87 semiautomatic shotgun with 4+1 capacity and an 18.5 inch barrel. Initially, I designated the Mossberg as the home defense weapon because (1) it was what I trained with in the Marine Corps, (2) it had a greater shell capacity of nine shells versus that for the Remington and (3) I simply had shot it more frequently and felt very comfortable working the pump action. After much thought, practice at the range with literally several hundreds of shells shot through both shotguns, and discussions with friends of mine (one a Navy SEAL and the other on the FBI's HRT), I've switched and made the Remington 11-87 my primary home defense shotgun (I should add that the Mossberg is kept loaded but with no round chambered in my closet.). That's not to say that the Remington will always be the better choice for others and everyone should decide based on their tactical situation and what works best for them.
    I live in a fairly small apartment on the fourth floor in San Francisco. No one is getting into this place without coming through either the locked front door of my apartment or the fire escape ladder outside my bedroom window. Either ingress route is going to be noisy and give me adequate time to grab my firearm and take a position to "greet" any intruders. Given the limited avenues of approach, I can be sure of covering either route from my bedroom with either firearm with some semblance of concealment. I've little doubt that one or two 12 gauge shells with 00 buck delivered at no farther distance than 7 yards (and more likely less than 5 yards) will stop any attack even by multiple assailants. As my two friends reminded me, 90% of break-ins are by people who think no one is home, even though there may in fact be someone in the home in question. Occasionally, some of the tougher and meaner characters will attempt a break-in but only if they think the home owner is unarmed. Once an armed home owner enters in the tactical picture, ALL the criminals go looking for easier targets. They're simply not interested in getting into a fire fight due to the risk of death of injury, as well as the fact that once shots are fired cops will be involved in short order. I also have a stock sock with 7 additional rounds in it and have repeatedly drilled under timed conditions how to shoot 4 shells, then reload while the fifth and final round is still in the chamber. It all comes down to what you shoot best with and practice on a regular basis. As for those who argue that racking the shotgun will make assailants leave, sometimes that it is true and that can be enough (see the police officer's comment below). But sometimes that does not happen, as my FBI buddy noted to me. Not every criminal knows what a pump shotgun racking and loading a shell sounds like, and some are so stupid they will still linger in the home even when you yell out that you are awake, are armed and have called the police. So one needs to be prepared for the dumber element that forces you to shoot.

    • @vege-gaming

    As a Cop I prefer and always used the 870 ..pump of course. I prefer the 870 all around and the best reason for having a pump action is that the SOUND of the action working....that a real attention getter and a warning. Universally understood. That sound has saved the life of at least 4 people I can think of off the top of my head that decided to cease and desist their activity upon hearing me rack that action. All of the negatives mentioned about the pump I have never encountered in a real life situation.

    • @hickok45
      @hickok45  8 ปีที่แล้ว +171

      +CyberKnife Good point. And I agree with you how the sound of the action could definitely work in one's favor and actually prevent having to work the action of that other device, the trigger. It's conventional wisdom these days to reprimand people and treat them as idiots when they talk about using the ominous sound of the slide action as a "warning"; however, I can imagine times when it would be EXACTLY the "tactical" thing to do. Sometimes people get all caught up in witty-sounding lines they hear from popular "super trainers" and just parrot them over and over on the Internet. Often it's likely a specific situation the "super trainer" was addressing and not offering advice for ALL situations. There is no "one size fits all" in this world.

    • @camperben
      @camperben 8 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      I can't put enough emphasis on how many times racking the action of an 870 has helped me on the job. One time ...two guys fighting...trying to stab each other with kitchen knives...totally ignoring me and my yelled verbal commands.....when I yell "Last Warning" and they hear that in combo with the Action rack....their brains hear that...and pay attention. I can think of other scenarios too. A female at home...hears a burglar in the next room. A woman's voice saying "go away"...vs no sound but the action racking on a shotty....which to you think gets them running faster? People who have not been in gun fights or on the brink of them really don't know its value...psychologically...

    • @billbaumiester6764
      @billbaumiester6764 8 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      +CyberKnife I respect your opinion as a police officer and yes the 870 would probably be the ideal choice in a law enforcement scenario. However for the homeowner, there are some other things to consider. Most homeowners do not have time or easy access to an open gun range to hone their shooting skills. Also the sound of pumping to load a shotgun can have a negative effect as well. It signals to the unwanted intruder your exact location within the house. And to add on another item, is the fear factor itself for those unaccustomed to being in a lethal situation. For the homeowner I would recommend the semi auto. It loads the next round without having to think or react in a highly volatile situation.

    • @camperben
      @camperben 8 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      Bill Baumiester Yea..I agree. You always have to account for experience in handling firearms. I actually find my ROF decrease when I first shoot a semi auto shotty. Takes me awhile to adjust my muscle memory the fist few shells and I find myself almost tugging on the fore grip to try to load a shell. I have also been in situations where I had my Police 870 in a "car ready condition" safety on, mag tube full, chamber empty. Realized I had to load a round in a quiet dark warehouse to get the "drop" on a bad guy I had him spotted before he had spotted me. Having has so much experience with it I was still able to slowly load a round working the action and the more challenging ..flipping the safety off. For that I cupped the area with my hands and body to "silence" the click and it totally worked. Don't know why that came to mind on your comments. I totally agree with you that the weapon has to be properly matched to the shooter. If that had been a Mossy pump or something I was unfamiliar with I doubt I would have even attempted it.

    • @hickok45

      +vegasrenie Yep, and while I understand that there are times a person would not want to rack the action and give away his location, I disagree with the "expert trainer narrative" I hear all the time regarding how you'd NEVER rack the pump or that it would not scare anybody. Maybe true in some cases, but I can think of several scenarios where I would rack the slide. To each his own.

      +hickok45 Well said. This is the same position that I hold. If I know the layout of my home better than the invader (and I do), and have six rounds ready, I want that slide to be heard, but within reason, at the right time. I don't like that its now considered a "myth". I'd make an accidental poopy in my pants if I knew i was in foreign territory and heard that slide rack, even if I had a solid rifle.

    I always thought because i have a 12 guage(mossberg 500) i was safe... Until i actually had to use it. I was a victim of a home invasion and the assailants had knives and l wasn't able to reach my gun until they ran out of my apartment. When my situation occured i was outnumbered 3-1 and had no idea if they had other weapons but when they left my apartment i grabbed my gun and chased after them and shot at them when they were driving off. I know i was in the wrong at that point but i didnt face charges because the cops were on my side luckily.
    Anyways, when i made the decision to shoot i completely forgot to pump and after the first shot I must have pulled the trigger 2-3 times before realising i needed to pump. Its not that i didnt know how the gun worked, i grew up hunting and have shot several 12 guages both, pump and semi, and had well over 500 rounds through that gun(i had it maybe 6 months at the time). My mind was going 1,000,000mph. You cant buy that kind of experience! I cant explain the adrenalin i was experiencing let alone cant imagine what i would have been experiencing had they actually been shooting back!
    Point being just because i thought i had decent experience with a 12 guage wasnt enough when the time came. And thats why im in the market for a semi-auto. I NEVER want to be in that situation again but if i ever am i want to be prepared!

    I'll always pick pump, personal preference. 2 main reasons is reliability, and easy to clear chamber if you ever DID get a jam, and pumping is satisfying and that's what comes to mind when I think shotgun. Also usually handles any type of ammo. Not saying semi isn't reliable, just saying I trust a pump a little bit more, and have way more experience with them .

    Thank you for all your helpful videos. I was thinking about what you said and agree that the semi will put rounds down rage faster... But in the case of a life or death situation or a "zombie" attack (needing to shoot them in the head), you will need to count more on accuracy than on out put of rounds. Really it just comes down to convenience of not having to rack a round before each shot. Good point about having to shoot with one hand. Thanks again for all your videos. Always watch what you have to say before I buy a new gun.

      I really enjoy my .88, since I got it for about 650 Turkish Liras when I did (Which is about 100-150$'s. Dirt cheap.). Only part I feel uncomfortable with is that the trigger assembly is made of plastics. I spend a lot of time down range and have put a huge amount of lead though the machine, it sort of scares me.

    if you're having trouble deciding.. think of a metaphor like: a manual transmission car vs an automatic transmission.
    i personally like to drive manuals. the feeling of having more control of my car rather than a gas and break method (automatic). nothing personal
    same applies for the shotgun. i like both, but i prefer the manual (pump action) method. i feel as though im more in control of the shotgun more.

      RELOADINGandSHOOTING you gotta think about brands though, you take a cheaper simiauto vs a will say cheap maverick 88 and drop them in mud. I know that 88 will feed and fire will that cheaper simiauto maybe but why take a chance. Now the higher quality simiautos like the 1100 or the super Vinci they probably will but that doesn't make them necessarily better than a 870 or a Nova in my opinion anyway

    • @bryandevereaux4445

      Blulk Smash 870 was my first gun period I'd recommend one everyday of the week, that being said mines older the new ones ain't as good they say but that's anything these days. I'd probably say federal flight control buckshot is pretty good. Or some #4 buckshot

    • @bryandevereaux4445
      @bryandevereaux4445 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also depends on what model you're talking about, me for home defense I'd get a better model like the special purpose marine magnum 870 rather than a normal express 870, but browning BPS is a damn fine shotgun to if you're looking for a in my opinion really good gun. Novas are pretty good guns to. If you can get use to the bottom eject I'd say BPS they really are a high quality gun for not to expensive of a price.

      A big advantage of the pump is safety. If you fire a round, you can opt to not work the slide or only retract to slide and the gun is safe. The semi auto will always load itself and be hot until cleared. Also if you're shooting clays the Semi sprays empties all over the place while you can eject the pump into your hand.

    from my perspective the semi auto shotgun is the only way to go. They eliminate user errors (short stroking) and the recoil reduction only aids the shooter in recovery and reduces fatigue. The modern semi auto, combined with the refined ammunition we have has all but eliminated reliability issues that used to crop up from time to time in the past.
    Though the point is moot as I can have nether in Australia...

      Phil McCain I doubt it will happen mate, Australian politicians are too anti-gun to allow that to happen. The problem for me is the fact that I was around when semi autos were allowed, and it really pains me to reflect on that fact.

      MynameisBrianZX less gun violence then who?
      I assume you are referring to America. Then you are right if you say, compare Australia (.93/100,000 firearm homicides) to District of Columbia (16.5/100,000 firearm homicides). But are wrong if you compare Australia to Utah for example (.8/100,000 firearm homicides). It interesting to note the firearm laws of the 2 examples I just cited, District of Columbia has very harsh firearm laws (almost as draconian as Australia's) and Utah has very relaxed firearm laws.....
      One cannot directly compare Australia to America, as we have comparatively uniform firearm legislation nationally where as America has varying firearm legislation state to state.

      I personally believe Australia could be like Utah if we had similar firearm laws.

      Unfortunately, I live in California, so where I from Australia looks like as safe as Utah =P Least I don't live in DC.
