All guns really. Some modern guns have like 200 parts and the engineering behind them is incredible. Edit: changed "moving parts" to just "parts". Examples of 200+ part guns are most modern belt fed LMGs and aircraft mounted cannons. Some rifles and smgs come close to the 200 part mark like ruger precision rifle and FN2000
@Praxium Guns can range from literally just a tube with explosives and a projectile to crazy overengineered and unreliable. Homemade smgs and the mechanical genius of the ak lie in between
@@mattrittman If you want to model something a bit different but equal in engineering, take a look at a Jennings Standard Chief slot machine from around the 1920s or so. The amount of thought that went into those is ridiculous. And since half the country is a bunch of degenerate gamblers, it might rack up some decent views. 👍👊
It must have taken hundreds of attempts minimum to get this mechanism to work and then to streamline it for mass production. I love engineering stuff like this!
I feel like they've definitely had more crude designs and shotguns we know today are derivatives of every single possible good design we've thought of put together. but I'm no historian
As simple as a shotgun is, it is still quite a complicated machine. The remmington 870 is such a durable thing that you could use it for a canoe paddle if you needed to. I trust my express to be reliable enough to help me harvest deer every year.
Yeah pass on the canoe paddle seeing that a few flaky pieces of metal hold back the firing pin, paddling a rock might be the last thing you do. PS Only a Moron uses a gun for anything other then a shooting... Its design to be used a certain way and to use for something else is total madness.
Older 870’s for sure, mine was made back in the 70’s, and has been nothing but reliable. My friend bought one around 2013 and it had so many issues he just gave up and got something else.
Working in CAD design myself, I have a massive appreciation for the effort required producing these videos. I wish I had the time to do something similar with some of my designs! Superb!
It fascinates me that most guns work off a completely mechanical system, not requiring electricity or power in anyway just physical pieces moving like a Rube Goldberg machine.
I spent 6 years working on weapons in the Army...and THIS was hands down the BEST training vid I've seen.. THIS would have saved us a ton of headache in AIT♥️ GREAT VID♥️♥️♥️

@@hope4ourfallen That really means a lot coming from someone knowledgeable in the field! It really surprises me that no one else has done videos like these. I’m just an average dude from Iowa lol. This is really good to know though! Glad people are finding these helpful 😃
@@mattrittman That's an excellent opportunity for Matt to earn some more from the Army by making videos explaining the working of weapons; after all, they are already spending a lot on training; it would be better if they just switch to Matt's videos.
Fun fact older shotguns such as the Ithaca 37 and Winchester 1897 did not have a trigger disconnect meaning as long as you held down the trigger, the next shell would immediately be fired when put into battery. This was and still is called Slam Fire. It was a quick and devastating method of emptying the tube at close ranges especially in the trenches of WW1 and Vietnam
That was actually far more complex than I imagined it would be. Whoever designed the 870 was a genius. With so many moving parts, how is it so reliable? Blows my mind.
Its just amazing that reloading and shooting a shotgun takes seconds, yet explaining how it all works takes minutes, and going into even more details about how it works might take hours
This does give me some insight into why short stroking could cause the gun to malfunction so easily. If you don't pull far enough, the bar holding the shells in the tube magazine won't disengage to let the shell pop into the feed ramp, causing a failure to feed malfunction.
the mechanics of guns have fascinated me for years, especially when you consider that they were made by really clever people basically as an upgrade from just throwing rocks and spears at each other, like someone had to without any prior knowledge or really guiding help, had to work out so much of it
I've always been fascinated with the mechanics of guns too. You know that slingshots and spears are made by literal apes though, they aren't the direct predecessors to the Remington 870. There was about 300 years between a time when a metal tube with a spring powered flint and steel at the back was the pinnacle of gun technology and today. Even before that there were wheel-locks and completely manual guns used all the way back in medieval times. They were making pocket watches before semi auto weapons, it was hardly a rapid conceptual or engineering leap, albeit a great and revolutionary conceptual and engineering leap
Well each small evolutionary step in firearms technology came from folks learning about that which came before and then improving one little detail or two, or sometimes re-working the existing ideas into something different to solve a new problem. The 870 shotgun came from all of the lessons learned from those who designed the previous pump shotguns, and those first pump shotguns came as an answer to other methods of reloading like lever action and those came from folks trying to add a way to not just hand load each round, which was already an improvement over those who were muzzle-loading. Not that those who make the next generational improvements over and over aren't brilliant in their ways, but certainly are standing on the shoulders of the designs that came before. Also to be fair, it wasn't until relatively recently that cartridge firearms even were possible (approx 150 years or so) so a LOT of learning happened really quickly once that technology came about. We're still learning new options today.
@@scottwatrous Correct. First basic "firearms" were technically just downsized cannons. The "trigger" was there for more practical reason so one could use both hands to keep the thing steady when firing (no trigger needed for a cannon that lays on the ground). True, the side effect of that was also a better control over the timing of the shot. The real advancement happened after proper cartridges appeared.
It’s kind of crazy how reliable these are all things considered. Engineering of them is cool, but also that they can be reliably manufactured to work so smoothly is insane.
I was thinking the same thing. Seems so simple when you shoot it, when in reality so many intricacies go into it. And to work so reliably time after time is incredible!
I too was surprised how intricate the mechanics are in a pump-action shotgun! Several areas where something could go wrong usually don’t on Remingtons, Mossbergs, Ithacas, Benelli, Beretta, ect... Even bullpup designs like Kel Tec’s KSG are becoming super reliable. I have a Gen 2 KSG and with about one or two days practice it’s just about as reliable as a Mossberg or Remington is. Mossberg Shockwave FTW!!! 🙌
This is one of the coolest animations I've ever seen. Even compared to other "how guns work" animations this one is just the best in the way you explain everything. Also when you showed the powder igniting the fire (well, hot gasses) leaving the barrel looked awesome.
After seeing the amount of detail went into the mechanics and functionality in this video, I'd be curious to see some of the older firearms as well. Such as an M1 Grand, or a gravity fed gatling as a couple of examples.
Funny enough, if you watch the video he made about the ak47, it's quite similar to how the Garand operates. The ak uses basically the same operating system as the garand, but the piston is above the barrel and the bolt and locking system are slightly changed around to fit the ak better
First time seeing this ch, the video show on my recommendation from YT algorithm Seriously i'm amaze how beautifully done is the animations in rhythm with the explanation... Making all the information is super easy to take This channel is truly deserved a lot of things

What blows my mind about firearm engineering is how many were made over a century ago. John Browning, for example, created legendary firearms that still operate today, all without computers. Just his tools and his mind.

I'm not sure what's more complex, the engineering genius of the shotgun or how the animation is made. I will never understand either, but will be always remain impressed by both!
Those animations surely are amazing, but the engineering is evidently more complex. I am no gun engineer, but my brother is. He has built guns, but is mostly doing repair, restoration and modifying, not inventing new guns. It is truly impressive how many mechanisms are at use and how it all plays together. If you really want to understand any gun, you have to dismantle it, and first and foremost shoot it. Nevertheless, the animations on this channel are the closest you can get to comprehending a gun you never touched. Hats off!
It's not as "genius" as you think it is. This took HUNDREDS of years with trial & error to form and even in todays' state, many aspects of it are arguably overly complex leading to unnecessary costs, less reliability and more expensive maintenance.
This animation shows precisely how shotguns like these are not drop safe. The sear can move independently from the trigger so putting it on safe with the trigger blocked does not block the sear. Don't have your shotguns chambered at home guys. Thanks for this amazing animation. The best one on TH-cam by a long shot.

@@mattrittman Have you ever thought of making a collab with Ian McCollum? I know his approach to video content is wildly different to yours, but you both lay heavy emphasis on the engineering part of firearms. Maybe you could talk him into narrating one of your videos?
That’s due to the magic of machining tolerances. A average part will have X amounts of tolerance from each other to where some parts may be oversized or undersized and still work, and also potentially have a setup to which it will “wear in” to where the parts will work together.
I have the same feeling regarding... pretty much everything. From living beings, to computer code. When you break stuff down, you tend to get this feeling of "okay, there's some time between each slow step", but then you realize stuff like cells replicating and computers loading something goes so fast you can't really comprehend it.
@@Ch4pp13 I agree. The problem isn't really understanding what's really going on it's just the speed and *amount* of stuff happening at a time. It's like trying to conceptualize very large numbers in your mind. Human brains just weren't built to be able to do that easily.
Guns are so destructive and the cause of so much grief - but you still just have to admire the sheer engenuity that went into creating that intricate machine that a modern pump action shotgun is. So many small, movable parts yet still so reliable.
For about a week I’ve been watching nothing but videos on pump shotguns. I don’t know why but the simplest type of firearm is the most interesting to me.
The engineering of firearms, especially that of semi-auto and the like never fails to amaze me. So much going in in such a cramped space. And all within a tenth of a second.
I never knew that the mechanics behind it were so complex, but it’s so cool how all the pieces work together for the whole process of shooting and reloading.

Thank you so much for the kind words :) Really glad you enjoyed this and thought it was one of my better ones. I thought my content was getting stale, but good to know people are finding it helpful.
That's genius. There is no other words to describe the genius of this invention and the complexity. But the fascinating part is that despite it's complexity, yet it's so simple. Anybody could build a remington.
I love the weaponry world, because even a shotgun that's considered rudimentary and barebones (at least where I live, seen quite a lot of people say that) is still a very well-engineered firearm
A shotgun can be as complicated or as simple as any other weapons. You have rotating bolt lug, semi automatic or fully automatic. You also have pump, lever or break action. Instead of looking at what kind of caliber or projectile the weapon is using the type is more what defines it's complexity. Example There is no difference between a lever action shotgun or rifle. Same can be said about break action. A bolt action rifle is imho less complicated than a pump action shotgun. Ofc that does not mean bad, as a hunter less complicated usually means more reliable 😁
I’m glad you chose a Remington 870 for this video. It’s a great system. I hope this is only the beginning of these videos because I want to see many more haha.
@X5J9 bro you vaguely replied to a comment with a story of your own that had nothing to do with the video or anything. I merely asked the question who asked because, no one asked and we surely dont want to hear your fake stories
@@Plague_Crow I know I'm 11 months late on this conversation, but I am so curious to even just get like a summary explanation of what this other person said lol I wish he never deleted his comment.
IRL shotguns would probably do more grazing damage at long range. In fact, I believe a shotgun would be most effective at medium ranges (anything between 20 and 100 m) as close range shots would just feel like one big round, shots at medium distance will just rivet you with 100 little hot balls of steel on all parts of the body, including head, neck, lungs, heart and other organs. Even a machine gun would not do as much damage.
I hadno idea the amount of precise engineering that went into guns. Seeing these videos is like the first time you see a clock disassembled and are like "woahhh!! I was not expecting that many tiny moving parts for something that looks so simple on the outside!"
Especially pumps. Best home defense weapon because chances are cycling the action will be enough to scare the intruder away. If not, you still have the best home defense weapon ready to fire
Thanks to this video I finally understand why a tube in "the opposite direction" is actually the shotgun's "magazine". I know these might take super long to make, so I am really glad you get the deserved views.
Excellent description. The fact that someone sat around for who knows how long coming up with how each component works in the initial development stage of the gun is very interesting.
It blows my mind how complex firearms are; even the ammunition was comprehensive. I’ll need to rewatch this a few times for the info to make sense to me but thank you for making this! You made it concise and straightforward.
As a gunsmith, I very much appreciate what you have done here. I've worked on tons of Remington shotguns. It's just nice to see the whole thing animated and properly explained. Amazing job
What a great explanation. What really amazes me is that someone 100+ years ago figured out how to make all this work seamlessly...no computer, no calculator. Just paper and pencil
whenever I see these kinds of purely mechanical firearm mechanisms, I'm always impressed by the fact that these designs are actually pretty old. the Pump Action mechanism was designed nearly a century and a half ago in 1854

Remember, the majority of civilians gun owners hopefully feel nothing other than recoil and a random chuckle from the blast. You should consult family if you feel malice while using a gun.
Pacifists are more welcome than anyone in the gun hobby. Honestly, there's nowhere else that you'll find more admonitions against doing anything that might lead to unnecessary conflict. The mechanical engineering behind shotguns is staggeringly impressive.
Exactly, and they are all mechanical which i find really cool.
@Praxium what gun has 200 moving parts? Stop lying!
@@Praxium imagine the autism you need to design every single part out

Guns can range from literally just a tube with explosives and a projectile to crazy overengineered and unreliable. Homemade smgs and the mechanical genius of the ak lie in between
Seriously, you see guns all the time, and even more “simple” guns like shotguns are WAY more complicated than expected.
Yeah, seriously! Even just studying these as I create the models just blows my mind. So much engineering goes into firearms!
Even a humble pump gun is hundreds of years of little and big improvements.
@@mattrittman If you want to model something a bit different but equal in engineering, take a look at a Jennings Standard Chief slot machine from around the 1920s or so. As simple as a shotgun is, it is still quite a complicated machine. The remmington 870 is such a durable thing that you could use it for a canoe paddle if you needed to. I trust my express to be reliable enough to help me harvest deer every year.
I wish I could also 'harvest' deer with you
Yeah pass on the canoe paddle seeing that a few flaky pieces of metal hold back the firing pin, paddling a rock might be the last thing you do.

Fun fact older shotguns such as the Ithaca 37 and Winchester 1897 did not have a trigger disconnect meaning as long as you held down the trigger, the next shell would immediately be fired when put into battery. This does give me some insight into why short stroking could cause the gun to malfunction so easily. If you don't pull far enough, the bar holding the shells in the tube magazine won't disengage to let the shell pop into the feed ramp, causing a failure to feed malfunction.
Yup stroking all the way also makes ironically makes a quicker job

the mechanics of guns have fascinated me for years, especially when you consider that they were made by really clever people basically as an upgrade from just throwing rocks and spears at each other, like someone had to without any prior knowledge or really guiding help, had to work out so much of it
I've always been fascinated with the mechanics of guns too.
Us Palestinian are still throwing rocks. We can only imagine to have a few weapons. Things would be different.
And to work so reliably time after time is incredible!
guns are like a mini-rockets, launching contents into targets with pin-point accuracy

Ты тоже учись так же создавать анимации, а потом тобой будут восхищаться :)
Hats off!
Complex?
Lol
Animations can be made by viewing blueprints of the guns and stuff so they are not nearly as complex but this channels animations look great
It's not as "genius" as you think it is.

Such an intuitive design. Amazing how anyone could be so smart to design something like this.
It's amazing how reliable guns are, even with all these tiny parts moving in unison precisely without breaking nearly every time
Tell that to any action hero when there about to kill the bad guy
Unless you’re using the Pancor Jackhammer
These "how it works" videos are insanely good
Never would have thought a shotgun would require this level of engineering. So much knowledge in the past

This video is so high quality I love it
I know its le funmy meme but this is literaly as simple as it gets
IRL shotguns would probably do more grazing damage at long range. In fact, I believe a shotgun would be most effective at medium ranges (anything between 20 and 100 m) as close range shots would just feel like one big round, shots at medium distance will just rivet you with 100 little hot balls of steel on all parts of the body, including head, neck, lungs, heart and other organs. whenever I see these kinds of purely mechanical firearm mechanisms, I'm always impressed by the fact that these designs are actually pretty old. the Pump Action mechanism was designed nearly a century and a half ago in 1854
we take advantage of guns but never appreciate what brilliance it took to create them and how they operate, built from people centuries ago.
The mechanics is approximately 10x more complicated that I expected. Once can appreciate how the military manufacturing, specifically guns and artillery, was the moving force for high-precision manufacturing becoming scalable and cheap in the 18-19 centuries.

if my post never was sabotaged and i i never went to mental asylum and i already made about 97-99% of music in the radio in denmark in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 and even all songs in 2019 would been the only very good songs with singing and rapping in 2019 and i would already been 1050-1800 times better than 100% of all singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing in 2019 and i would always used 5.5-15 hours per day with making songs & rapping and singing and i never had any days off without practicing and since i would been famous in 2019 and i could had used 100 more memory and brain supplements and without all of it was with antiandrogen, trans medicine and anti psychotic medicine and without it would be swapped out with supplements without any effect for the memory and the brain and i could also used 30 more drugs for singing and rapping and i would only got super much more catchy with singing and rapping for every single week / per week for over 30 years in the future and I WOULD Only got super much better in 100s of different ways with singing and rapping for every single week / per week over 30 years in a row and i never had any days off because i only have all those breaks because my post was sabotaged and i have no money only because my post always was sabotaged and i would by 100% guarantee already been 5000 to 8200 times better than 100% of all other singers from 100% of countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing in 2020 and over 45000 times better rapper than 100% of all other rappers from 100% of countries in the world combined in the end of 2020 and i would by 100 guarantee already have 50-108 more listenings to singing songs in 2020 more than justin Biebers music have in total and 50-88 more listenings to my rap songs in 2020 more than eminems music have in total and i would earn 55-200 billion danish kroner per month since 2021 and i would had made 30-65 albums per month since 2021 and today i would been about 128000 times better rapper than 100% of all countries in the world combined and today i would been about 17500 times better than 100% of all other singers in the world combined at making music/songs by singing and i would by 100 guarantee get 44000-54500 more listenings to my music in 1 year in the future more than justin Biebers Music have in total and 87000-107000 more listenings to my music in 2 years more than justin Biebers music have in total and my rap songs would been 1 octillion 35 octillion times better than 99,99994% of all others rap songs in the world and all singing songs would been 1 octillion to 35 octillion times better than 99,999% of all others singing songs in the world. If they didnt put me to mental asylum in december in 2021 and i made 25-35 music videos per month in 2022 and i would already been more or close to as famous as Lukas Graham in January in 2022 and i used many hours per day with singing and rapping in all of 2022 and i would already made 97-99% of music in the radio in Denmark in 8-9 months in a row and i would already had earned 28 billion to 79 billion Danish kroner and i would made 20-40 songs per day the last 3-4 months in a row and all my songs in 2022 would been the only very good songs in the world and about everyone would agree and everyone would know in 2022 why all other singers and rappers is bad at making songs and everyone would agree that all other singers and rappers in the world is all making noise in general instead of music and i would been 2000-3000 times better than 100% of all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making music/songs by singing in 2022 on less than 1 year of singing practice and i would by 100% guarantee get 230-378 more listenings to my music in 1 to 2 years in the future more than Justin Biebers music have in total, if they didnt put me to mental asylum in 2021&2022. I never had mental illness in my life and i have to get 500-800 billion Danish kroner in compensation for being in mental asylum in 2021&2022 and i have to get 400-600 billion Danish kroner in compensation for being in mental asylum in 2019.
I was about 40000 times better rapper and then they stop my constantly daydreams by 100% and with my constantly daydreams and i got super ultra mega extremely unbelievable lightning quickly better with rapping and singing aswell and then since i was about 19 years and 4 months old by often giving me anti psychotic medicine with injections while i slept over many years in a row and my daydreams was always stopped by 100% because they never stopped to keep give me anti psychotic medicine with injections while i slept. With my constantly daydreams and i got a better rapper for every minute i was awake, i also used my daydreams to always make great rhymes everytime i was walking outside and i also used my daydreams super much on same time with everytime i freestyle rap. So it was kind of what i daydreamed, that i freestyle rapped. If they didnt start to give me anti psychotic medicine and i would been 83000-93000 times better rapper than all other rappers in the world combined before i would been 20 years old and i was always going to be a singer and it was always the plan to start practice singing alot in the future, so when i would been famous with rap and i would started to practice singing alot and with my constantly daydreams and i would improve super ultra extremely unbelievable lightning quickly with singing and rapping and because of my constantly daydreams and i would used over 35 more time with singing and rapping, it was only because they stop my daydreams by often giving me anti psychotic medicine, being the reason why i didnt freestyle rap that much and i would made 97-99% of music in the radio in Denmark in 8.3-9.3 months in a row and all my songs would been the only very good songs in the history of the world and since i would been famous and i could used better weed and alot of other drugs for singing and rapping and in 2016 and i would been about 12000 times better than 100% of all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and i would been about 15000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2016 and i would already have 6000-10000 more listenings to my songs in 2016 more than justin Biebers music have in total and i would make high to very high % of music in the radio in Denmark in 2016 and over 36 more years in a row and i would have 50000-64000 more listenings to my music in 2017 more than justin Biebers music have in total and i would had 122000-148000 more listenings to my songs in 2018 more than justin Biebers music have in total and in 2018 and i would been about 21000 times better than 100% of all other singers from 100% of all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and about 200000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2018 aswell.. In 2020 and i would been about 33500 times better than all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and i would been about 275000-300000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2020 and i would have 370000-530000 more listenings to my music in 2020 more than justin Biebers music have in total, in 2021 and i would had 520000-750000 more listenings to my music more than justin Biebers music have in total and i would been about 41000 times better than 100% of all other singers from 100% of countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing in 2021 and about 320000-350000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2021 and today i would been about 350000-394000 times better rapper than 100% of all other rappers in the world combined and today i would been about 46500 times better than 100% of all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and i would by 100% guarantee get 4.3-5.5 million more listenings to rap songs during my life more than Eminems music have in total and i would by 100% guarantee get 6.3 million to 8.5 million more listenings to singing songs during my life more than justin Biebers music have in total and my songs was so fantastic and famous that close to all the songs would been famous in 1000s of octillion of years in the future and almost 100% of all of my rap songs would been 1.5 octillion to 40 octillion times better than 99,99995% of all other peoples rap songs and my singing songs would been 1.5 octillion to 40 octillion times better than 99,9999% of all others singing songs. i started to smoke cigarettes again in mental asylum in 2019 and when my post wasn't sabotaged anymore / when my testosterone was high and i stop to smoke cigarettes and heal my voice chord and start to smoke cigarettes and even though they never stopped to sabotage my post and i stopped to smoke cigarettes in december in 2021 and starting with singing practice alot in january in 2022 and i would already made about 25 rap music videos in january in 2022 that i recorded myself with beats i would buy online and i got my dad to video record me and by using a video camera stand and it would quickly get a me good record deal and i would already made 97-99% of music in the radio in denmark in 8-9 months in a row and i would already hyad earned 30 billion to 80 billion danish kroner and i would by 100% guarantee get 230-378 more listenings to my music in 1-2 years in the future more than justin biebers music have in total.

They exist on TH-cam.
I just purchased a Remington 870 for my first shotgun. I’m so excited!!!
It’s remarkable how incredibly complicated while simultaneously simple the mechanisms actually are.
Another brilliant work of the MASTER.
Haha! Thank you so much, seriously :)
The engineering behind guns is so insane
So clear, straight to the point, no wasted time, great breakdowns. holy.
I was a pacifist before watching your gun animations - now I have a healthy appreciation of the engineering elegance of these amazing machines - thanks to you Matt
Yes - good point.
Remember, the majority of civilians gun owners hopefully feel nothing other than recoil and a random chuckle from the blast. You should consult family if you feel malice while using a gun.
For a minute there, i thought it was going to get dark
Pacifists are more welcome than anyone in the gun hobby. Honestly, there's nowhere else that you'll find more admonitions against doing anything that might lead to unnecessary conflict. One of the first lessons a person gets from their peers when they get a license to carry, "You ever flipped anyone off on the road? Well now you don't. Ever."
