  • The Vice Presidential suggestion to just get a double barrel shotgun for home defense deserves some discussion and demonstration, I believe.

Unfortunately one of our two political parties, the one who seems to be dominating the media and even the culture war at the moment....2024 will bring big news... sadly people are going to kill each other no matter how it goes but especially if a certain someone becomes prezo..
      In my state 10 has been standard for awhile... ask your average non gun owner and they will likely say that is too high. People want to bring it down to 5, have no doubts. And than 10 will be high capacity. They will try that after falling to make semi autos banned. They will be slow to figure out that a 10+ rd bolt action is just as dangerous as a 5 shot semi auto. see many people going to lever guns if semi autos are booted.

    Here in Australia, NO one can own a firearm for the purpose of self defence. If we have a permit to use a firearm for pest control or farming we cannot use a firearm for self defence. NO ONE can ever use a firearm for self defence in the home or anywhere else. The Howard Govt took this right away from everyone. They have gone even further, we are not allowed to defend ourselves in our own homes either, unless the force is equal to or just above what the attacker is using against us. You cannot stab someone if they don't have a weapon for instance. Just this week a alleged home invader, thief died while in the process of robbing a house. The alleged owner and a friend defended themselves against this man and he died while being held by them before the police arrived. The owner has been charged with manslaughter for this mans death. Allegedly the home owner only used there hands on this man but still they are in serious trouble. The intruder had just been released from jail for break and enters committed previously. I urge all Americans to stand up for your current rights because we have lost all of ours and the criminals have all the rights while the home owner has none. Legal gun owners here are treated like criminals, we have our gun safes inspected every couple of years. The police try to entrap you during this process. If for example someone that owes you money says you threatened them the police will come and take all you firearms and your licence to keep them. They don't check to see if it is true, they mostly side with the non arms owner. Our country is being run by the left wing media and it is being ruined. All of our homes and businesses are completely open to the criminal element and we can't do a thing about it.

      +Aussie Cockie A while ago in sweden an old man using a double-barreled shotgun shot and killed two kids from his window, that one of them had broken. Currently being on trial for two counts of murder.
      Not being allowed to use more force than the situation calls for is simply common sense!
      Come back and cry more when you're speaking on behalf of the victims rather than the killers.

    • @Khunark
      @Khunark 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** exactly. Which is why people should not have guns for home defense in the first place. They are not reliable enough not to kill their fellow man even without guns!
      Unless you live in a shithole that would rather see everybody armed than cared for, you would not even need a gun to defend against home invaders. Remember the cold war? It did not end by getting bigger nukes.

      +Khunark Then move to Sweden . If you don't like guns don't buy them. It's not that hard not to buy them or support groups that do. But don't try to strip people of their natural rights ,because you say "we don't need them " you aren't speaking for the whole population. I wonder how genocides would have turned out if the perpetrated had firearms . Very differently . And you see how the cold war turned out there was no nuclear Holocaust maybe because bigger nuclear weapons actually saves lives .

    • @Khunark
      @Khunark 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Berzerk Troll well yeah, lives are saved by weapons if the other side already has weapons. it might be the only option, but should never be the first.
      what solved the cold war was not getting more weapons though, it was solved by diplomacy to mutually decrease the amount.
      likewise, there must exist a dialogue to regulate weapons on the local level in order to reduce the amount in circulation.
      refusing to open up for that dialogue, say by grounds of 'rights violations', only means that one likes weapons more than the security they are supposed to bring.

      ***** Hickok isn't really the other side of the story. He mainly just shoots guns in his backyard. Try watching the TH-cam channel "AmidsTheNoise" and start with his first vid. He makes some very good points. He's a good example of our side of the argument. ColionNoir is another good one. AmidsTheNoise is good for facts and statistics with legitimate sources and ColionNoir is good at arguing against the culture and logic of gun control. I'd recommend those two to start with. If you want to do heavy reading, you can visit gunfacts.info or read some of John Lotts' literature on the subject. Many of his books are 400-pages of facts, graphs, analytics, and statistics against gun control backed up by reputable, non-biased sources. I used to be pro gun control so I do understand where you're coming from.

      "How can you possibly reason with someone who's Pro-Gun-Control?" "I spend most of my time wishing people like him would drop off the face of the fucking earth".
      Because those people WON'T simply drop off the face of the Earth. If you exercise a degree of intellect on them, you can educate them. I used to be pro-gun-control. People change, the more they learn. He's probably pro-gun-control because he's convinced it saves lives. It's wrong, but that doesn't make him inherently wrongful. We both believe in the greater good but by different means. You only make things worse by widening the divide, rather than opening dialogue. I've convinced nearly a dozen people since 2012, by presenting a dialogue with facts and reasoning ability. What good does it do to strengthen their pro-gun-control beliefs by refusing diplomacy and inflaming adversity? You're doing just as much of a disservice to the pro-gun-rights side as they are. Your wishing and despising does no good for your own side and actually weakens it.

      I don't know if you remember the '94 Assault Weapons Ban but its pretty much that except worse. Instead of 2 "assault features" its now one "assault feature". According to the infinitely wise Prince Andrew Cuomo and his retched full blown communist fairy godmother Sen. Feinstein an assault feature is a pistol grip, adjustable stock, detachable magazine, flash hider, foreward pistol grip for a non-shooting hand, and some other bullshit. I can't even believe I just typed that because it felt so stupid...I think my IQ just dropped by 35 points just typing that. God I hate these politicians.
      EDIT: So now all those people who said "No one is coming to take your guns" I laugh at them and if anyone says it now they are lying or a part of the problem. I was literally 5 days from getting a brand new AR15 as my Christmas gift but then the pond scum Cuomo took advantage of dead kids after Sandy Hook and that dream was ruined. I mean I had no problem finding a billion other semi-automatic rifles that do essentially the same thing but I had wanted an AR15 since I was 12, I used to read up on how it worked, who used it, etc. as a kid, I always felt guilty and was cautious living in a liberal environment but now I realize how misplaced that was. So there's my sad story, can't wait to get out of here. Until I have the resources to cut loose from the grips of what I have here and the state I'll just enjoy my 1/3rd of a 2nd Amendment right I guess! Haha.

    I lost a good friend who was murdered after being robbed last week. The criminals had unregistered weapons when they were caught fleeing the next day. No matter how hard you try to rid this nation of weapons, people will always get their hands on them, especially criminals. If all guns are banned, it's a lucrative opportunity for black markets. The only effective result after enforcing gun control will be taking the guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens. If you think I was making this up, search robbery/murder case in Richmond, VA.

      Exactly. Also, people see this term "registered" used on TV and in some states. Nobody in most states have ANY registered firearms. None of mine are "registered" and nobody in Tennessee that I now of has a "registered" firearm, unless maybe an NFA select fire firearm.. Firearms registration is the first step to confiscation, which is why we do not allow it in the Free states of this country.

    Thanks for sharing that. I have a handgun that I thought would be fine for personal defense in the rare chance I might need it. Then I went to the firing range and was quickly surprised at how extremely difficult it was for a novice to hit a target (even come near the target) at only 25 yards. I was also very surprised at the recoil that a small handgun had, they definitely don't show that on TV. So I couldn't imagine trying to use that accurately in a high stress situation of a home invasion by an intruder or multiple intruders. Then I tried the shotgun, and felt a little more confident in my capabilities as I was relying on the spread to take care of it. After seeing this demonstration and the difficulty to get a target, I am definitely glad I took some time with the AR. Anyone can dismiss this as unnecessary, but if you were to put yourself in the shoes of someone in that stressful of a situation, I completely appreciate what you are saying. Shooting a target while you are calm and concentrating is EXTREMELY difficult, so I can't even imagine fumbling with shells and trying to aim accurately in a dark home while scared out of your wits! People that are under the influence of all these crazy drugs out there will do anything, those are the ones that I am concerned about. To each his own, but thank you for taking the time to demonstrate.

    Having been in Law enforcement I get asked this question a lot, i've talked extensively with guys in Elite groups within our military, numerous SWAT officers, etc...
    I have experience with both weapons , I will say that wholeheartedly I believe the AR is superior to the Shotgun in just about every aspect when it comes to home defense .
    I feel too many focus on the raw power of the shotgun as a reason to select it over the AR , and the myth about hearing the racking noise and the bad guys go scurrying is complete BS.
    That being said here are some advantages (perhaps overlooked) the AR15 has over the Shotgun
    1) Easier to fire one handed (in the event the primary operator is injured)
    2) Easier to manipulate (reload etc..) one handed as well
    3) Barrel can be rested upon a surface , where as with certain shotgun models such as pump you have to manually rack the slide to chamber another shell, especially if this is taking place one handed
    4) Can engage more threats than a shotgun without having to reload
    5) AR's are generally shorter and more maneuverable than most shotguns barring Bullpup configs
    6) In the case of pump shotguns, threats can be addressed faster with an AR
    And most important of all
    7) In the event the primary operator of the AR isn't able to continue to use the weapon, the recoil of most AR15 rifles is tame enough where even an adolescent could effectively fire the weapon. Not so much with a 12 or even 20 gauge

    If the person is trained somewhat with the shotgun its a devastating weapon. As a retired police officer we routinely trained shooting at ranges from 5 yards out to 25 with 00 buck and slugs out to 50 yards. We shot from lo and high ready positions with the 00 buck without aiming. I'll take a shotgun any day of the week in a home setting where intruders might break in. Aiming is a luxury the homeowner may not have time to do. Of course the more open the choke the better it is in tight quarters and inside residence encounters at short distances. Additionally while 00 buck would have greater penetration, shotgun loads come in a variety of 4, 5,6, etc etc which greatly enhance the strike potential. At short distances they will disable an intruder as well or better than 00 buck.
    The AR-15 shines for multiple round capability and accuracy at extended distances. Unfortunately they require pin point aiming unless you subscribe to the " spray and pray " philosophy of home defense. With few exceptions I would not advise someone to engage in following an intruder(s) outside and at distances where the AR-15 would be the better choice. The AR-15 would require more training than the shotgun in most instances and would not be the weapon of choice for a semi skilled or less homeowner. The simplicity of a short double barreled shotgun is hard to beat.
    Bottom line for me : Shotgun in the home. Ar-15 outside.

    In Australia semi-auto rifles are heavily restricted and basically not available to the average gun owner. Handguns are also a massive pain to get licences for. We also usually don't have many armed home invasions with multiple perpetrators. In that circumstance, a double barrel shotgun which is very easy to get on a Category A licence (same as an air rifle) will be the most practical.

    The various accessories for the AR allow it to be configured to accommodate people with various disabilities. Also, if someone has difficulties changing a mags, a 50 round drum can solve that problem! I wonder if it would work to sue California under the Americans with Disabilities Act for not allowing people to own AR-15's? If nothing else people with disabilities should qualify for one. So if you get an AR prescription from your doctor, does that mean it's covered by Obama care?

      I am aware they are still sold in CA. I saw some at my local outdoor outfitters. With a 10 round "bullet button" magazine, it might as well not be an AR anymore. Detachable magazines and higher capacity magazine options are one of the things that make the AR what it is. As for the AK, if you are limited to a 10 round fixed magazine; might as well just get an SKS. In that situation I would rather have the gun designed to use a fixed magazine rather than a gun made stupid just to get around stupid laws.
      So as long as I continue to live in CA, I wont be owning any modern sporting rifles. But I have been eying the SKS and M1 Garand. I really wish I had picked up an SKS when they were cheaper and easier to find.

There's nothing that pump won't do that the AR can do in a real life scenario and it will be more capable than an AR in a close range situation. That's me. I have a lot of experience with shooting. My wife, however? She is familiar with the AR platform. The guage is hard for her because she is small. A round of 00 buck will rock her onto her heels. If you are very lucky, you will hit more than one stud, or a load bearing wall, and perhaps a nail or 2 on the way...but home construction dictates, it will most likely be drywall all the way. You can punch a hole through drywall with a pen, so imagine how far a .223 round will travel? Kids room, garage, neighbours house...you get the idea. Best home defence? Dogs and lighting. They will pick on the next house.

    I don't know, I feel like an AR is kind of overkill for the purposes of home defense. Does anyone really need 30 rounds in a magazine to kill a home invader? I doubt anyone would need to lay down suppressing fire on a common thug probably blazed out of his mind.
    Plus, depending on where you live (such as an urban environment like an apartment complex), wouldn't a 5.56mm blast its way through a couple of walls if you miss? That seems like a safety hazard to me.
    I'd assume a pistol with anywhere from 6 to 17 or so shots could be just as effective (not to mention more maneuverable) at the range a home invasion would occur at. If a guy can't kill what he's aiming at by at least shot 6, he probably isn't qualified enough to own a gun in the first place.
    A shotgun is not enough, I agree, but an AR seems excessive IMO. Not trying to get political here, just trying to work out the logic in it.

      ***** Nobody who has ever been in a deadly encounter says he wishes he'd had less ammo at his disposal. All the old myths about never needing more than four or five shots if one knows how to shoot are just that, myths. Actual shootings often reveal that even experienced people under stress will miss often and shoot many more rounds than they even realize. A dynamic situation of a home invasion is nothing like shooting targets on a range. I'd want a hundred rounds in my firearm if it were practical to carry it. Also, 5.56 rounds, if hollow points or some of the new self defense rounds, will penetrate fewer walls than most handgun rounds. The sheer velocity causes the rounds to break up after a few walls. But yes, they are probably going to go through at least one wall with no trouble, just like any handgun round.

    • @mrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk
      @mrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrk 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ***** 00 Buck and most handgun rounds (9mm and up) will punch right through walls. Using something like XM193 out of a rifle will greatly lower the chances of over penetration as it will begin to tumble and fracture on impact. That's what I keep loaded in my M&P15 for home defense, as the houses here are only about three feet apart from one another. Home invasions are usually carried out by a group of people. Do I need 30 rounds (plus the other 30 round mag clamped to my rifle)? Probably not. But, I have it if I do need it. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. That being said, I also have an 870 loaded with 7 rounds of 00 Buck plus 5 on the side saddle. It's good to have options. Like hickok said, no one who has ever been in a gunfight ever wished for less ammo.

      I just not would bet much, if you were to have me stand on one side of a sheet of drywall, and have someone fire at the opposite spot where I was standing from 10 feet away...nope, would not make me feel comfy at all.
      Firstly I am impressed at the non-troll tone of those participating in this very interesting and valid conversation.
      After watching dozens of video on the .223 vs drywall scenario, I still am not confidant that everyone who keeps a .223 loaded next to the bed, for home defence, has rounds that will 100% fragment into a non-lethal threat to a family member on the other side of a drywall.
      I see so many videos on youtube about being attacked, in the home, by groups of assaulters, armed to the teeth with assault weapons, hence the requirement for equal or greater force. I could find no reports of these actual random scenarios taking place, in a domestic home.
      Like I said, I feel sorry for those who have to live in an area where the home is under constant threat from armed assailants, and can offer no real advice other than ballistic, and my own real world experience. I was issued, and used, in the line of duty, a .223 assault rifle/9mm pistol and submachine gun, and am very confidant of the ballistic capabilities of those 2 particular rounds. We would quite often do "wood tests" just out of curiosity...different types of wood, in varying thickness at different distances. We never even considered drywall, as know, as do any law enforcement investigator, .223 goes through at least ONE wall, at close range, and kills anything directly behind it.
      Anyway, I am not trying to convince anyone who's mind is already made up. just tossing in my 2 cents.
      Enjoy your summer and stay safe!

      ...as an afterthought...all the drywall tests I have seen on TH-cam, were done incorrectly. If you are familiar with the blanket test, and the hanging sandbag test, you know that physics, demands exact replication. The "walls" that were hastily put together for the TH-cam tests were not anchored on the top and bottom...I think one test, had one secured on the bottom, but both need to be for accuracy of results. Point being, all rounds would have gone further, and carried more energy. Nit-picking for some, critical for others.

    I agree with all of the points in the video, but remember, the people you are trying to reason this point to don't believe you should be able to defend your home with a gun at all. You should try to be diplomatic and talk to the home invader, maybe see where their life went astray and try to help them rehabilitate. If you do shoot the poor misguided person who forced their way into your home, who may be there to rape and kill your family and kill you, well then you should go to prison for killing someone with your evil guns. Remember just fire into the air and they will scurry away.

    At short range, a shotgun is devastating. Houses are usually not that big. Wouldn't go with a double barrel but a good pump or semi auto shotgun will do the job of home defense. You won't be shooting 100 yards + in "home defense". You'll go to prison if that's the case.

    Sorry guys... this is a long one.....I lived in LA during the LA riots back in 92’. And my mom was the apt manager. My dad was also LAPD. Now during the riots our apt complex was on the corner and there were three other adjacent apt complexes on each corner. My father and some friends (other Officers and friends that had handguns and rifles) stood guard on all points of the roof of our apt complex. (156 units and 4 stories tall) and we saw mobs, and when I say mobs, I’m talking about groups of 40 to 100 people, smashed the main lobby windows of the other buildings and swarmed into the buildings like cockroaches. The three buildings on the other corners apt units (most with people living in them) had their doors kicked in and terrorized and apts looted and violent acts were done to them and their families. One building was set to fire. All of the building had 100 plus units in them. No one could stop them. At the time it was the beginning of the riots and it was such chaos that the LAPD told their officers that they could come to their stations and hold up in them until national guard came in ( which was about 4 to 5 days later) and restored some order to LA. My father had a list of names of the people in our apt complex and family and friends that were allowed to come there. Anyone.... I mean anyone that came close to the front lobby doors had about 10 to 12 barrels pointed at them from the rooftop and if they weren’t on the list they had to get going, no questions asked. There was a group that came out of another building that they ransacked and were heading over to our building. All of the guns were now at the front and aimed down at them. They were warned and they all scattered away like the pieces of shit they were. We lived on the corner of LaFayette Ave and 3rd st. Look it up on google maps. It’s smack in the middle of LA. Long story short, guns that day saved many people property, safety of their families and possibley their very lives. Being able to protect yourself is the only sure thing you can count on in a bad situation, not the police, the government or anyone. When shit hits the fan ( and no one knows when or how that will happen) you should be able to protect yourself. Sorry for the long message but I thought it was important.

    Another great video. A couple of questions and thoughts... I have at times kept a pup shotgun for home defense which has the advantage in firepower over the double or single but I have often wondered if one could hold some shells between the fingers of the off hand for quick reload (assuming shotgun has ejectors). I would love to see you try such a technique and test its viability.
    Second I wonder if a pistol caliber carbine might be even better than the AR for such situations. Two factors might be the somewhat excessive power and muzzle blast of the .223 Remington and the horrendous cost of an AR rifle. I would think the pistol caliber's lower noise level would be a tactical advantage in that your hearing would not be as compromised. I would love to have your thoughts in that.

    Mr. Hickcock can u make a patterning video, with different shot gun ammo at distances persay for home defense use. I understand the essentials of what a shoty does, but looking at comments, I can see many don't understand what a spread pattern vs distance means or even is. Now low recoil, or sub shot gun ammo/ few defensive specialty loads out there, may pattern in 2-3 yards. But those are strictly for pump and single load use. Many buy semi auto thinking it's grey for home defense, yea maybe but most semi auto won't cycle home defense loads. Like always , love your many many years of insight. God bless sir.

    Didn't know that about the penetrating capabilities of the .223. I thought it would go through most barriers. Than again, I'm used to shooting green tips in the Army. I suppose a proper home defense load would be designed to break up in walls.

    • @jeremymenning56
      @jeremymenning56 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +CyanLink 50 grain varmint hollow points are great for that. pretty much break up in the first inch to three inches of penetration and completely fragment and dump all of their energy right there. Nothing left of them to penetrate after that.

      +CyanLink The green-tip military M855 has a hardened steel core that improves the bullet's penetrating capability.

    In Canada, the AR 15 is a restricted weapon. The magazines are all pinned at 5, meaning that the magazine capacity might be 30, but you can only get 5 in there because the magazine has a pin that prevents one from loading more than 5. Nobody in Canada owns a firearm for the purposes of self defence.

    • @TheIceman623
      @TheIceman623 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But hes right. It takes nothing for a criminal, to break the law to get what they want. But its not just about criminals. You have a right to own an ar15 so you and your people can keep the gov from being the only ones with weapons. I think the reason Canadians and Europeans find it so easy to accept not having them, is they have no fear of a tyrannical gov because they already have one. Americans have an independence in us. Its been with us since the founding, that we do not do well with the chains of servitude on us. Most of us would rather die keeping freedom and liberty here, than live without it. Its most likely very hard for someone without that independent thought process to fathom why we fight for the right to live in a free, even if slightly more dangerous, country. And its not. Switzerland has gun rights and almost no crime. In the US our crime really only happens in urban areas where guns are restricted but yet, criminals keep them.

A flash light is also pretty important, that said I can navigate my house in pretty much complete darkness but thats assuming there isn't broken glass or a door/window frame on the ground for me to trip on so unless I get some Gen4+ NODs to quickly grab and throw on my head a flashlight will do :P

Comparing the US from shore to shore and then adding Alaska, Hawaii and probably Puerto Rico to the stats is just poor logic when comparing Britain shores.

Are all those murders with knives, bats, etc. being caused by the availability of guns in the US? How, pray tell, does _that_ work? The US has some issues to work out, but gun ownership is _not_ one of them.

You don't have to worry about over penetration depending on your shot so that makes it good if you live like in a urban area so you don't accidentally put a round through a neighbors house. They do some serious damage, still hold a fair about of rounds and they are repetitively inexpensive. What ever floats you boat really.

      If you're looking for a starting AR the S&W M&P 15 is a really reliable, accurate gun, and allows you to learn the platform without breaking the bank as well. (Not discrediting the Colt, just mentioning a less expensive option for your first AR)

    Both of these guns are overkill. You can completely blow somebody up with this.
    Imagine they are in your house, obviously armed because all Americans have guns for some reason, wouldn't you rather have a more compact weapon? Something that you can easily stick around corner, move through doors with and be nimble with. They are also more likely to come in at night, when you're sleepy I don't think it's smart to start firing a gigantic shotgun in your house...
    Then again, I live in The Netherlands so I'm completely safe here :D

      You make some good points. I personally use for home defense the Kel-Tec Sub2000 rifle loaded with Federal GuardDog. 4 pounds, I can reach out and open doors while keeping the rifle up, and it folds in half. Love it!

      You know whats funny. you said that these huge guns are hard to move thru doors and halls? well if that was true why is it that the Army (all armys) clear rooms with rifles like this. Im in the military we dont clear buildings with handguns for a reason. its underpowered and with how short our M4s are we can easily maneuver inside buildings. Carbines (what M4s and AR-15s are) are compact. You clearly have never been in any self defense situation so what makes you think you know anything about the topic and can comment on it like your some subject matter expert? You come off as arrogant not intelligent.

    Unlike the AR the shotgun will still function dirty... A good pistol or Pistol caliber carbine or pump shotgun is all you really need and sadly you can get all three of those for the price of 1 AR...

    • @xander665
      @xander665 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again your paying a thousand dollars to be lazy... Elaborate waste of money... Plus that long barrel in close quarters is a disadvantage to you... True you may not over penetrate the bad guy but you will on the walls... I have training in this area and I only see it as expensive overkill... But that's just my opinion, I have the training, practice, and skill set to do as good if not better with a handgun or shotgun... A prison survey was done a few years ago where the prisoners were asked what was the most terrifying sound to hear when they broke into a house... Number 1 answer was a shotgun chambering...

      15 years military service. .. Shot expert all 15 yrs. I was also military police for a few of those years... I know my weapon systems, my training, and my experience. I still practice and run drills in my residence. Shot placement is 10 times more important than caliber selection. That is all I have to say on this matter. I wish you luck in all your en devours....

    If Nobody except the police would be allowed to own weapons you would not have to defend your home with firearms. Maybe there would be cases in which a gun could have saved life but it would be harder for criminals to get a gun. And that would probaly prevent many shootings. If I would have grown up in a country in which everyone is allowed to have a gun I probably would also want to have one, and I would not understand guys saying what I have written above. Maybe thats the reason why America has problems to just throw away their guns.

      That presumes that you can defend yourself against an attacker without being armed. That is not always true. If attacked with a knife or bat, or if you are a physically weak person (female, elderly, disabled etc.) attacked by a healthy male, if you try to defend yourself without being armed you will most likely fail.
      Also, if you look at the statistics the number of times people defend themselves with a gun is not a "maybe, sometimes" thing. It happens thousands of times _per day._ Compare that with maybe ten people killed with a gun per day _including suicides_ and it's pretty clear that guns are a good thing.

    Hey Hickok! I live in a condo and share walls with 3 neighbors! My nightstand gun is mossberg 18" tactical pump 12 gauge loaded with federal defense (cop stuff) #4 buck...with 6 shot shell carrier on receiver (+ the 5 in tube = 11 rounds) and green laser sight so shooting around cover, etc doesn't require straight look down barrel. Green dot on target, and shoot. Buffalo outdoor has video online showing .223 round from ar15 blasting through 23 sheets of 3/8" drywall before breaking up. Same as his test 9mm fmj. I'm a huge fan of yours, and not trying to discredit your firearm wisdom (you da man!), but for folks in apartments, kids in other rooms, etc., this is something to consider, regarding over penetration danger. I wouldn't advocate birdshot, but in my research, defense #4 buck is very effective bad guy round with lower risk of "other side of wall" incidents. You can also put some 12g slug rounds in the on board shell carrier for through-barrier shots if BG decides to attack from behind cover. Lots of options.
