As someone who has lived in Montreal for my whole life, whenever it’s sunny in winter, it’s colder because when snow falls, it technically acts like insulation against wind. If you noticed, it’s much quieter when it’s snowing. Double up on your pants, and socks, and sometimes gloves. So yeah, in winter, if you notice that the sky is clear, bundle up really warm! Lol Also yes, this city is gorgeous. I love my home ❤️

very true, it's fucking freezing here when it's sunny. a snowey day is usually nice and mild, i got out with shorts and a hoodie.

    • @Xerxes2005
      @Xerxes2005 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's not the snow, it's the clouds. The clouds keep the heat. When it's sunny, the heat is reflected by the snow and gets out of the atmosphere. When it's cloudy, that heat is trapped by the clouds and reflected back. Unless there's a snow storm, of course. Then the wind and the snow will freeze you...

I remember when a colleague from my company's Singapore branch came to visit in December. He was in Orlando, FL for a trade show and so he figured he would stop by the main office in Montreal as it was "in the area". He came for a week. On Wednesday it started to snow, and I remember seeing him mesmerized, staring at the window at what was surreal to him. Singapore is almost right on the equator, and the weather is 30 ºC (86 ºF) with 90% humidity year-round. Well, that was Wednesday and his first sight of snow. By Friday, however, he couldn't wait to get on that plane and return to the warmth of home. LOL.

How to be comfortable in the cold:
get dressed appropriately, you need at the VERRY MINIMUM: a scarf or something else to hide your nose, neck, and mouth and most importantly ears.
A hat or a really well closed and isolated hood on your coat, well-isolated means 3/4 inch thick minimum (or high tech materials)
    A good -30 oC coat
good shoes/boots made for actual cold, no running shoes no city shoes (You'll only be fine with those for a few minutes. Your footwear need a grip, nothing flat
your normal clothes plus another extra layer like a wool pullover or a polard or something, layering is IMPORTANT
your socks must NOT be made of cotton or easy to freeze petroleum-based fabrics, wool is strongly suggested as it stays warm when wet, your feet will sweat no matter what, cotton in particular with sweat becomes frigid.
Make sure to have good gloves, if it is lower than -15 oC put mits not glove as individual fingers get freezing faster. Some hybrids allowing for momentary finger movements exist, look for those if you are not gonna play in the snow, mits all the way if you are going to do.
The pants are optional based on how long and what activity you are going to do... playing in the snow yes no question asked, just going to the grocery store on the corner not needed, rule of thumb if you are going to stay out for over an hour without break you should probably put some unless you are already quite resistant to cold.
Finally, keep in mind layering so you can remove or add clothes to adjust to your current needs. If you are overdressed you will sweat then freeze, if you are too lightly clothed well... you guessed it.
It sounds like a lot but once you understand the basics it is pretty simple, it's just tiring to always equip all that gear every day, but you can be quite comfy even in the -30 oC's range if you have the right gear (we tend to stay indoor when it is that cold though.)

Old Montreal is so beautiful, I always miss it during Christmas time, only issue is winter snow goes on and on and on! Until April! Dress warm, buy quality clothes will make a huge difference! FYI nobody looks cool in winter, nobody cares! Enjoy the winter snow! It’s a magical thing!

While living in Montreal, I always dressed up in full winter gear during the crazy cold days. Despite this, I remember feeling that my eyeballs were freezing 😆 my eyes were the only parts not covered. After a few year though you get used to the weather and on the third year I went out for short walks even on the -30C days. My son was also born in Montreal in November and I think this is the reason why he tolerates cold so well but can’t do well in very hot weather.

You can ask any Québécois. We rather have a cold, sunny and plenty of snow rather than a grey mild winter with a lot of slushy rain (wet snow). For any visitors, get appropriate snow coat, boots, hat, scarf and gloves and you can go outside at -30C without problem. In January and February, wear a snow pant if you plan walking more than 30 min outside. If you don’t have one, you can wear a thick leggings under a jeans. The only people who wear boots with heels are those who transit from the garage to another inside parking. In icy day, we wear metal crocs under our boots . You can get cheap pairs in the dollar store. The only downside is in winter, we have less sunny hours and in February..at 4h00pm is already the evening. I am always amaze to see visitors who decided to spend a day in the mountains ⛷ is like you never swim before and you try to make the entire lake in one day. Instead try “les glissades” the snow slide park where you can have a lot of fun without any skills. The good one are outside the city so you will need to rent a car.

It is depressing i hate the winters with a passion so it kinda pisses me off when ppl say the snow is cool cuz they dont realize the damage it does to us mentally.

I love watching this ......Winnipeg Manitoba has other names Winterpeg And Winterpig ...Why? Well My first time landing at the Airport There was a digital display above the exit doors Saying : Time 7:57PM Tuesday Feb 7th Temp -51C Wind 22Knts .........When i left Winnipeg 2 weeks later it said : We told You -51C and you still Stayed for 2 weeks? HA HA !
Montreal is nothing for cold You wear a pair of jogging pants with long underwear other them You wear 2 pairs of THICK socks And Boots not shoes Not dress pumps a 1 shirt 1 sweater/hoodie 1 thick coat Hat and gloves .....Montreal bagel And hot coffee you are fine for 45 mins And thing more And you need to invest in actual winter proof chothing Stuffed jackets with wrap around parkas Snow pants Winter Boots with liners Scarf Glasses And heated vest ...Thats how a Canadian Handles -51c
