  • 50mph with 10hp! This is the seventh episode of my mini 3-point hydroplane series.
    I’ll show you how I rigged my Kiekhaefer Mercury KE7H race outboard to this little 8' hydroplane! I'll go over how to convert from factory throttle to use a remote throttle or deadman's throttle. Deadmans throttle cuts out the throttle if you get tossed overboard, so your boat turns off. I also go over the basics of setting up a simple cable steering system.
    Check out this pretty rad documentary about the designer of this boat here:
    • The Life Of William D ...
    It's only 8 feet long and about 4 feet wide, but this little thing should hit 40-50mph when properly set up, and the sensation of speed being only inches from the water should make it seem like 100mph. Although it's in pretty great condition, there are a couple things I want to do to it before I get her wet; watch the video for my plans on refinishing the hull with a trick graphite and epoxy coating to reduce drag, and rebuild the steering area to improve the aesthetics.
    Hopefully watching this will help convince people to tackle their own boat restorations; it's dirty work sometimes but it's not too complex or challenging, so please leave a message if you have any questions and I'll try to help.
    If you liked this video or learned something, please check out some of my other videos and stay tuned for updates to the SST project!

    A perfectly acceptable rant! It would bug me too.
    Nice work again!

      I know, right? So frustrating when you spend money on parts that don't fit. Oh well. Made it work....was really ticked when I snapped the throttle lever tho.

    Be sure to double check/think the steering cables through. Here’s a bad example th-cam.com/video/8yy_DE0GSrM/w-d-xo.html
    It’s a scary feeling when the boat starts in gear, but the steering does completely opposite of what you’re inputting.
    Also, many hydro racers say to get rid of the springs on the steering. Ideally, it’s best to get the steering bar radius’ equal on both sides so that when you tighten the cable, it’ll stay tight(right versus left). It’s a more positive setup and reduces potential of loosing control in a turn, even when straight I suppose.
    As far as evacuation from a runaway motor, it’s natural instinct, and most all of us have done it at one time or another!🙀💃🏼

      I made that mistake on my first boat, getting back to the dock with backwards steering was memorable, so I avoided it this time. :)
      That's odd, I see springs on most of these types of boats. I don't know how you'd eliminate tension otherwise.
      Thanks for the feedback!

      @@ADDvanced Soooo, yes, most all of the old boats were set up with em. They accomplished a couple of things. They obviously act as a dampener for one, but they also take up an amount of slack. Next, with the pulley at the bar then cable strung down to the boat, it creates a mechanical advantage or gear ratio of sorts. Great for one finger driving but similar to a 72 Cadillac it’s kinda isolated feeling and not as sporty as pinning the cable back right at the bar, once you get the bar set properly. I’ll see if I can find the thread from hydroracer.net explaining all of this, because chances are likely if butchered the subject!😉

    Quick question.
    Why not use sleeved steering cable and a steering box?

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve never seen an engine this old rigged like that; the steering arms were designed for dual side cable steering systems.

    Wait, you had all that work done on the lower unit and reused the impeller?

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it surprised me too, but the guy who did this has been doing this for years, and he says if the original impeller is in good shape, it's more compliant/better than the reproductions, which were made a bit too stiff and tend to wear out really quickly.

    • @ADDvanced
      @ADDvanced  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, some people think they're worth a lot, but the reality is the market for them is really small. My dad sold an absolutely incredible D stock on with a monster motor and it went for less than 3k. 10 years ago it would have been worth more, but the people who grew up with them are dying out, so the demand is dropping.
