  • This is my Hal Kelly Wetback hydroplane. After many hours of restoration work on the boat and engine, I can now say that mine and my dad's hard work has paid off. We took part in the annual ACBS boat show in Muskoka, Ontario and we walked away with the Muskoka SeaFlea's FleaFest People's Choice award of 2015! Wait until they see what I'm bringing next year! Let's see if we can be the 1st repeat People's Choice recipient.

    A really wonderful speed boat. It's got an ageless design and looks great today. It's amazing how you've only had to replace the bottom after all these years and it's obviously given you and your family years of quality payback for all your hard work. We'll done for winning the award.

    • @WiltshireTutorials

      It really is a timeless design. I never get tired of the boat's design. We replaced a sponson as well as the bottom of the boat. I hit a piece of driftwood going near top speed and cracked it. Other than that, the boat has held up great for its age!

    A couple of buddies and I built one of these back in the mid '70s. We bought the plans from Popular Mechanics. We ended up powering it with a 3 cylinder Evinrude (60HP?) outboard we found at a yard sale. We stripped the outboard to make it as light as possible. Looked and sounded pretty "mean" without the cowling and airbox. LOL We removed the electric start and used a pull rope around the flywheel for starting. We lived not far from a boat "junkyard", so trial and error for what seemed to be the right propeller didn't break the bank. That thing was insanely fast. Wish we knew exactly how fast, though.
    Sad ending to the boat and one of my buds, though. As we lost interest in the boat, we ended up letting one of the builders keep it. He modded it even more, by buying an old Johnson 140 HP outboard and gaffing together an "inboard" mounting setup for it. He was killed in it during testing.
    I still wouldn't mind building another. An Elco electric outboard setup would certainly be different.

    My brother built that same style of hydroplane in the 70’s. I think the plans came from Popular Mechanics. Several people were building them. Some extended the sides past the engine to allow for better stability and larger engines. A blast to drive.

      Hi Hal, have you ever think about to make it into a larger scale (multi-seaters) and still maintaining at the same speed ?

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hal Kelly is actually the designer of the boat. It was made in the 50s. It's just the name of the boat. The whole idea of 3 point hydroplanes is speed, being lightweight and minimalism. These aren't made to have a seat in them.

    Father an I in 1970 built a 10 foot 3 point hydroplane much like yours, all marine plywood, hardwood stringers,bronz nails and screws, marine resin glue, 6 oz layer of fiberglass on the outside, 20 horse Merc went 53 clocked MPH, drove it in Los Angeles Harbor, between some big waves. Oh and tied the lower engine unit down with rubber straps to keep the engine in the water as an Xtra boost of power and angle aluminum sponson extensions to smooth it out on a plane.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's always awesome to see stories like these for folks who had these boats back in the day. 53MPH is moving for 20HP! I'm still tweaking at the boat to squeeze more speed out of it.

Great boat until a I hit a submerged 55 gallon drum in the Ohio river near Pittsburgh. Had great fun with it for a whole summer until its' demise. I had modified the Merc to have tuned expansion chambers! My ribs still hurt from when the boat stopped and I didnt. Nice job!

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      This boat is a little heavy due to the amount of fibreglass I used to restore the boat, the battery for the electric start and all the safety equipment to make the boat legal. It tops out at about 48 MPH.
      I could make it run a little faster (maybe 55 MPH) without the battery and 3 gallon fuel tank. However, I like the electric start. Trying to pull over a high compression 20HP by hand is not easy and the amount of fuel is nice to go on longer joy rides.
      If I want speed, I just use my other hydroplane 'Fly'N Eagle'. You can find the video for that boat here: th-cam.com/video/baOKzPnypqM/w-d-xo.html

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      +David Jessee the whole idea of these boats are to be light and inexpensive. Installing a hot foot would be slightly dangerous because it would have to go under the deck of the boat and I could get stuck under there if I flip the boat. Again, adding a power trim would add more weight.

    Beautiful hydro you have! Nice job. I built a Clark Craft TU-9 tunnel hull in high school and currently run it with the same model motor you have. Mine is a 1968 Mercury 200 20 hp. Looks like yours is a later model year. What prop do you use? I can't find an 8 spline race prop that will fit that motor so I'm limited to the 11 pitch 2 blade or 9 pitch 3 blade. With the 11 pitch it will max out the motor rpm at 31.2 mph. That same motor and prop can push your aluminum boat to the same speed (31.2 not 50) so obviously a higher pitch prop ia necessary. The 200 is a very underrated engine in my opinion.

      Trying to keep this era of boats alive! The restoration was one of the most frustrating things I've done. But, it was worth it in the end! If you're going to attempt to make a 3-point hydroplane of that scale, you'll probably want to make it out of fibreglass and not wood. The upkeep on a wooden boat of that scale is massive and fibreglass would be much stronger structurally.

    Most of these comments are just jealous talkers. You don't need oil temp on a outboard this small. It's not about if you can beat a wet bike/jet ski (just another snowmobile style ride, boring), or how fast you can go. If you want to ride a jet ski go do it then and stop bitching about another boat. It's about building your own boat and the accomplishment and feeling of doing it yourself. I too built a 10' tunnel mite from GL boat designs and it has a 25hp on it. It goes about 40 and on a ten foot piece of plywood 6" off the ground that's plenty fast. That way you can let some friends drive it without worrying about them killing themselves on it, and of course suing (that seems to be the theme in America lately) you. Your's seems to hop a lot until it gets planned out, why is that? This is obviously a flat bottom too correct? What hp is that motor?

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the kind words, Steve. It is a flat bottom with 2 sponsons. As for the flopping, I have the boat setup to level out and have a smooth ride when I have the throttle full out. Lastly, for the engine, it is a 1976 Mercury 20HP Electric Start.

      I can get the boat to do 50MPH in the right conditions. It has a 1976 Merc 20HP. Could get it to go faster with a quckie lower unit, taking the battery out that is used for the electric start and by using a lighter fuel tank.

      I too had a 3 point hydroplane built from popular mechanics plans. It only went 42 mph with a mark 20 hurricane but it was the fastest boat on Mill Lake in Parry Sound. It had 14x21 gears in the lower unit and a solid brass prop with a shearpin" which failed regularly". I was finally dethroned when evinrude came out with a 90 hp motor on a fairly small boat . My brothers and I regularly took it to the races in Bala back in the late 60's but never won anything, we were always beaten by the Konigs. Absolutely the most fun you can have for the buck, the boat fell into disrepair over the years but still have the motor and deadmans throttle in the basement. After seeing these videos it may inspire me to build another one for a last blast, I'm 65 and would love to drive one one more time.

  • @outboardfixer

    What in heck keeps them from flipping over backwards......I would think the least bit of lift and over you go.

    • @WiltshireTutorials
      @WiltshireTutorials  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's mostly the design of the 3-point hydroplane and how it works. A 3-point hydroplane rides on the back tips of sponsons and the back of the boat. It mostly allows for air to slipstream on through. However, it does trap a pocket of air in between the sponsons to allow the boat to ride on an air pocket. Less boat in the water, means less drag. Allowing the boat to go faster. I believe the length of the bow has a hand in keeping the boat stable.
      The rigging and set-up is also important to the stability of the boat. If you add too much tilt and height to the engine, it will throw off the stability of the boat design. Putting a lot of weight in the back of the boat will also cause the nose to rise higher. Increasing the risk of blow-over.
      From personal experience, I've found the Hal Kelly boat designs to be really stable. Both the Wetback and the Jupiter are a really nice ride. My favourite is the Hal Kelly Jupiter. There's something about the ride of that boat design in particular that I really like,

      I decided to keep the boat the way it was built back in 1978. That is why there is no speedo on it. I like to use my phone and GPS as a speedo. As for oil, you do realise that this is a 20HP outboard engine that requires the gas to be premixed with oil, right? There is no need for an oil pressure or oil temp gauge. Lastly, for temperature, I run the engine within factory recommended RPM, I replace the impeller every 2 years and the engine isn't trimmed to a point where it affects water PSI. With that said, there is no problem with engine temperature.
