  • Gosfield Lake, Essex.
High angle shots of two of the racers putting on their crash helmets. Pan down from one of the men to show the name of his boats "Whoops" (I think the other is "Lazybones"). High angle shot of another man who smokes a pipe - pan down to his boat "Akela" or "Ake". M/S of three boats in the water - one is called "Clipper".
Panning shot following a hydroplane boat racing across a lake. Two other boats follow him. Moving shot of the hydroplane racers - various shots. One of the boats is called "Whoops". It is the Essex Hydroplane Racing Club in action. C/U of a man watching through binoculars and various shots of the boats (one point of view shot taken from on board one of the boats).
Narrator tells audience about the boats - how much they cost, how much petrol they use etc. over shots of the race. C/U of man in a control box jotting down times. Some of the enthusiasts are former motor racing drivers - they have split-second judgement. M/S of man standing with a chequered flag. Low angle shot of a large timing clock. Man waves the flag and the boats move past.
Paperwork lists drivers as Ken Aldridge (Lazybones), Claud Mayers (Tiger), Harry Place (Clipper) and Sgt "Chuck" Church (Whoops).
Note: this item also appeared in CP 001. This version may be longer - the shots are certainly in a different order and the commentary slightly different but it is essentially the same story.
See separate explanation record for CP 001: 'International Pictorials'.

I’ve came across some amazing canisters of old racing film mostly hydroplane races and some auto races from 1959-1961 about 8 reels got it from an old collector in Destin,FL but it also has guntersville Al labeled on a couple reels. In a nice old metalLogan deluxe model carrying case. I haven’t been able to watch but did have a projector and before it went out I saw photos of a miss bergdahl (?) not sure but it was something like that. I’m wanting to sell the collection but not sure who to contact any help much appreciated my grandmother I lived with and took care of just passed away and I’m moving back out west if anyone knows a good contact please reply, thanks

Please please please upload it online. I know you said you were wanting to make some profit, but archiving it to the internet will help generations of people interested in early hydroplanes (like myself) see just how far the engineering has come. Archiving old video to the internet is like putting something in a forever museum. Regardless of what you choose to do with the film, it's a really neat find :)

About 60 years ago I remember them racing in the river at Newport Arkansas. Sometimes they would crack up and you could hear the motor bubbling as it sink into the river. I always wanted one.
