I can't see the next Smash being anything but a rebooted sequel. Cut down on the roster massively, revamp a ton of veteran characters so they are much more in line with the modern versions of themselves in terms of movesets, and dial in the focus back towards some decent modes again. All the other options you listed are very extreme and simply couldn't happen due to the scope being SO big in one way or another (thus requiring a ton of development time/effort/money/etc.), or a lame Ultimate port with more stuff which I feel like even Sakurai and Nintendo knows is not something they really want to seek given the costs of having to re-license the tons of IP. Cutting back fairly drastically whilst reinventing characters that have gone basically unchanged for up to some 20 odd years is the best bet, I feel. It just makes the most sense from pretty much all angles.
What I’m expecting is a soft reboot, something that refreshes some older characters without hitting the reset button completely. On that note, I don’t see the roster going below 50 characters at launch. Around 50-65 (counting ~10 newbies) sounds about right for Day 1. Essentially, it would treat Ultimate as a one-time fluke but still be an increase over 3DS/Wii U’s roster. Likewise, not having to bring every single character back Day 1 gives them more time to focus on the rest of the overall package. As for UltimateR/Ultimate Deluxe, I think it’s really unlikely for three big reasons… - It’ll be tough to sell the average person on a port of a game they can already play on their Switch 2 via backwards compatibility, especially when the game in question sold like hotcakes. It’s not like MK8 where the Wii U bombed & the Switch 1 wasn’t backwards compatible. - Including the DLC characters, especially the third-party ones, would necessitate a new revenue split for everyone involved. Maybe SNK would go along with it regardless, but good luck getting a company like Disney to agree to less money. - Sakurai went on record on his TH-cam channel saying that he aims to make each Smash game that works on distinct, which is specifically why he did Brawl instead of Melee Online for Wii. An enhanced port of Ultimate goes directly against that ideology.
To argue against your points: 1) I'm willing to buy a Switch 2 console like I did with Switch. I brought it for the sake of everyone's here and Ill gladly do it again. And even help friends for it too. 2) Disney is NOT the issue why do you keep thinking Disney is the problem its literally just design is the issue. But now that's its SOLVED it shouldn't be an issue to relicense that design again. Especially if they did it once BEFORE 3) He did Brawl because Nintendo were gonna do an Melee port for Wii if Sakurai didn't work for the sequel.
Honestly, I think your "Revolution" idea sounds the most reasonable to me. It seems like a good way to make everything old new again. It can benefit from brand recognition while still being something fresh and new. I gotta assume Sakurai must be at least a little tired of working on Smash as it was, and if he really does consider "Ultimate" as the culmination of the series up to that point, a new direction means he can work on the thing again without being 100% bogged down by everything that came before it. He can trim the roster as needed AND tweak the returning characters however proves necessary, cuz he's basically starting from scratch! Or, if Sakurai doesn't wind up directing the game, whoever replaces him doesn't have to have aforementioned bogged down-ness to the same degree as he would if they were just making... UltimateR. Also, I find it worth noting that, even if Smash itself isn't the foremost example of this, Nintendo in general does like to tweak and innovate their big name franchises to keep them fresh, particularly if there is any sign of stagnation in them. If Sakurai doesn't feel like he can take Smash as it is any further in its current form, well, now seems like the time!
Yeah! Much probably the series will pull a Mortal Kombat 1 approach for the next episode, rewriting a lot of rules. For example pokeballs will stay but Assist Trophies will be eliminated, and instead you will get actual assistants from a second roster, which will be assigned to the four D-pad directions, to be summoned during the game, but with limitations. Like: You can summon only one assistant for each match and you can summon each of them four only only once for run.
Generations sounds like a super excited way to go! It’s funny, because so many people have complaints about how there’s Breath of the Wild Link, Young Link, Toon Link… and instead of denying that, I think leaning into that for every character actually sounds pretty amazing
lol, I actually don't mind the likelihood of an 'UltimateR', especially if it included a campaign much like what you discussed with in 'Worlds', as you mentioned. Somewhat in line with your 'Generations' idea, older characters could have their movesets completely revitalized but their classic movesets could be kept in the form of 'legacy echoes', helping to bolster the roster even further. I also want to see Smash open up lots more customization and shareable content creation, such as custom fights and stringing those together for your own 'Classic Mode' if you want! The Smash 'Revolution' idea is pretty cool too and I'd greatly prefer it over the total reboot idea many people seem to propose, which I don't think would be as successful.
I had so much fun with Ultimate that I would be so down for an Ultimate Deluxe or Fighter Pass 3. Its waaayyy too soon to say goodbye to all the cool characters we got in Ultimate.
I wouldn't be mad, but I would hope they could also improve online play and maybe give us a reason to play online beyond just doing Elite Smash matches. More themed events and cosmetic rewards would be really cool! Maybe take a page out of other fighting games or even look at splatoon!
Remake a lot of old character moves, much better online, a real story mod with a mix of brawl cutscenes and 3ds adventure mod gameplay, much better target mod like in brawl + a lot of good other mods
I don't know what's most likely, but I like the Worlds idea. I would also be curious about a tag-team-based reboot. Less characters but more potential combinations

I love these theories Jake! I've had a similar theory to a future Smash, where you called it Revolution, I termed it Royal lol. Having Smash as a 3D platformer fighting game is a potentially risky move, but could be worth it in the end if performed correctly. I love the thought of running around as a fighter in a 3D environment! Maybe even have a feature where 2D platform fighting was still an option in case players want to go back to the roots of Smash. I found your Generations concept really appealing. Playing as your favorite "version" of a character sounds so nice (I'd love to main a Super Mario Galaxy version of Mario lol)

I appreciate that you have some original ideas here that aren't just the same boring ones that get trotted out constantly. I have a different vision however: not necessarily as a sequel to Smash Ultimate, but a new smash bros title that acts as something of a spinoff. Imagine a roster and game mechanics themed around something more specific than just "video games", with a smaller roster suited to its themes, whether that theme is something like a Villain Takeover, D-listers getting their rare chance in the sun, or retro 8-bit NES era gaming, any of these could have plenty of characters that would otherwise not have a great chance to get in a main smash game but could make for a fun game themselves.
Great video as always. I will say when you were laying out the rules of the what makes a "Smash" game all I could see was Multiversus. It hits all the key points.
The biggest thing Smash has over Multiversus conceptually is I think the ~meaningful~ crossover. Since Smash fighters are from video games there are expectations about how they should feel and play. I love the idea of a 3D smash bros but it’s a huge risk to try and replace the current smash formula. Maybe the solution is to port ultimate AND introduce a brand new 3D reboot of the series?
Am I a sucker? Why does the idea of dozens of slightly different versions of the same character make me so excited? A lot of my favorites in Ultimate are like, Toon Link and Lucas and I adore the introduction of Echo fighters for Daisy, Dark Samus, etc. Just having more options of expression than just color swaps or the hassle of the customized moves from Smash 3DS. Does it sound like money? Not really, but give me Paper Mario vs Majora's Mask Link (with transformations anyone?)
I know everyone wants Ultimate again, and again, Smash Bros Revolution and Smash Bros Reboot are ideas I can get behind, because it really flips the script and takes Smash into a new direction and territory that we've yet to see it in. At the very least, I can see the Revolution idea as a side mode. As for the Reboot idea, the thing I need most are characters FINALLY getting their movesets updated. I'm talking Samus, Sonic, Ganondorf, any that's overdue for a new coat of paint. Those are my two cents.
Another thing: since Smash is a crossover, I want it to feel like a crossover with the characters from different worlds interacting with each other like in the trailers and Subspace. That essence was missing from Ultimate and Smash 4 to an extent
Smash worlds and reboot are the most likely, revolutions and generations are interesting, but I feel like ultimater is the least likely. I think the new console will be backwards compatible with the switch, and smash ultimate can simply be played on the switch.
If the next system is backwards compatible, I could potentially see a Smash game for it that goes wild with it, with the logic being the “real” smash is still playable on it (maybe even upgraded in terms of graphics). That said, I feel like the most LIKELY thing to happen is, unfortunately, some kind of re-release of ultimate. I don’t want it, I think it ended perfectly with Sora and don’t think we need any more, but Nintendo’s gotta have a Smash on their new system. Its literally mandatory
I say they just port ultimate with a bunch of new features. Maybe have 2 selectable move sets for the older fighters, add a bunch of new stages and characters, and possible a Melee mode that has melee physics. And an epic adventure mode similar to sub space.
I like the Super Smash Bros: Budokai Tenkaichi idea the best. Smash games sell as good as they do because of the new characters. The next one should focus on featuring anything Ultimate does not have. Even though Ultimate has so much, you are correct that so much history is omitted from the worlds it has.

i dunno that i'm really feeling the Generations pitch - I'm a Zelda fan, all we've ever had has been different iterations of the same characters a reboot sounds the most appealing, the last couple rosters have felt bloated to me anyway. let's thin out the playstation guests and the fire emblems, freshen up the longtime veterans to keep pace with the newer additions, and strengthen the single-player content while we're at it
I would hope the generations characters could be more different than what you see with the Links. It would really lean into movesets built around specific games. Imagine a Sunshine Mario moveset that takes full advantage of FLUDD. Or an Odyssey moveset all about whipping around cappie. I would even love to see a Mario spin-off moveset all about using sports equipment, party dice, and a kart for special moves!

I want new changes to the core mechanics. The series hasn't moved forwards in this way since Brawl.
