- 👉 Smash Ultimate has built up the craziest roster featuring IMPOSSIBLE characters like Sora, Steve, and Kazuya. With the possibility of a new Nintendo console launching within the next few years, it's already time to start speculating about what the next Super Smash Bros game could look like. Would Sakurai choose to cut the roster down and make a new game? Or would we receive the same treatment that games like Mario Kart, Pikmin and Donkey Kong received and get a 'Deluxe' version for Smash? Depending on the negotiations made for the 3rd party characters, they may not have to make new contracts. In racing games when they negotiate for cars with real life likeness, they buy rights for a number of years. If Sakurai got enough years, the work could already be done. Or, some contracts are done for a singular title. A remaster/re-release style may not need new contracts. For example, the NFS Hot Pursuit remaster by Criterion had all the old copyrighted music because it was the same title.
Basically, its not as unlikely as people think.
I’m still extremely surprised that they didn’t add monster hunter as a dlc with Rathalos being a boss/assist trophy and having it be perfect promotion for when rise came out as a switch exclusive. Looking back at the every new character added in ultimate, I never really had a fighter who I truely had a connection with, so yeah that’s all I really want
Both Sakurai and Capcom spokespeople have been _very_ open about how they want Monster Hunter to be represented by the monsters themselves, not the hunters. Similar to how Pikachu is added whenever Pokemon needs a rep for some crossover instead of Red or Cynthia or whatever.

I think the idea to built on top of Ultimate is not as easy as porting Mario Kart. You have completely forgotten about the fact that you need to renegotiate with every third party developer, and there are 11 companies that you must negotiate with. If it was Brawl which had only 2 third party companies involved I could see it happening, Smash 4 more than doubled that number (it has 5 companies) but outside of Square Enix I don't see much trouble, but Ultimate is a different beast, it's extremely difficult to repeat it because if only one company refuses, it's over, and three companies (Square Enix, Atlus and Disney) are extremely over protective with their IPs, problematic.
Yeah I definitely see that being a potential issue for a couple characters like Sora or Steve. I think realistically the better option would be to cut the roster down and create a new game, but that would take longer to develop. A deluxe version would be easier to develop, but like you said it would be more complicated because you need permission from every company again

Back in 2018 before Ultimate released, Sakurai tried to guess and said that, given the scope of Ultimate, we wouldn't get another smash game until at least 10 years from that moment. Keep in mind, this was WAY before Switch's lifespan got extended so he had no idea about how successful the system was going to be. Now Smash is a console seller so 10 years is obviously too much wait, but provided that Switch keeps selling until 2026 (in other words, coexisting with the successor for a couple of years), people would still be able to play Ultimate which makes waiting for Smash 6 A LOT EASIER.

this was a highly enjoyable watch, I think you're predictions are highly based. haha. I bet you get a good amount right too. would love to see the route 1 potential video...although if you're sane you want route 2! I think they should always take route 2, each time make it the new most epic videogame ever, and let the story mode be what gives each entry it's unique identity. they could even add less than 5 new characters to the base game each time, so long as we get dlc and a new bell and whistle here or there, along with that new story mode. new sub 🎉

Isn't Donkey Kong Jr. removed from the current series canon? If you want him to return, you should ask Nintendo to make a new game that can properly re-introduce him in a new role first.
At this point what matters is that the removed character isn't the most significant character through out the whole franchsie. Otherwise we can say the same thing to Wart and Stanley.

already say, the regular games should be used to explain the canon, not crossover. Crossover are usually noncanon so it'd definitely cause confusion.

Uh, Sakurai has said in his TH-cam channel that they've reached the limit of game. If your point is true, the question should rather be why there are no new DLCs this year.

I don’t know much about licensing and or the character approval process for those that are owned by 3rd party companies. However, I would imagine having that same game like Ultimate and just expanding the roster (maybe Sakurai even making a few more 3rd pary deals), is the cheaper and better way to go here. We have to remember that for a long while a balance needs to be kept between Sakurai & and the demand of the fan base. A new game all together just simply isn’t in the cards right now

I wish you had expanded on what Pokémon N would use, and how it would play.
My personal base roster going off of your criteria would be Bandana Dee, Kamek, Excitebiker, Meowscarada (even tho it would be great to have N) and Rayman, a character more closely associated with Nintendo and its style of games. Crash is such a massive pick, I'd save him for DLC.
I'm sorry dude, but no way Dixie Kong & Slippy Toad would be DLC. These characters don't sell DLC. You forget that every Nintendo character in the DLC was promotional in some way.

@@kyled.parksesq7263 Every DLC Nintendo character in Smash Ultimate were not only there to promote Nintendo games, but to specifically do that. Byleth was a character specific to the then recent Fire Emblem: Three Houses, same with Min Min for Arms and Pyra/Mythra for Xenoblade 2. Dixie Kong and Slippy are not only characters who've been around for a while, but aren't big name main characters in any degree (the only exception is Dixie being the main protagonist for DKC3, but that was decades ago). Unless either of them were to get what I call the Pauline treatment, where she had a super grand return in Odyssey and since then has been everywhere, I simply don't see it happening. While both would be cool and fun to play as, they aren't big enough names for DLC, paid additional content. Maybe in a base game, but not DLC.
Your dlc roster is nearly perfect. But I would change one thing. I don't see Scorpion or any MK character getting in, I'd remove him and put Master Chief in his spot. He's not big in Japan, and can't end it with him, but is an icon that I think needs to be in Smash. As for the final slot, because of the resent remake. The highly requested character Geno should be that final fighter.

Not really banned, it's just not sold over there due to all the restrictions on CERO's part. If NetherRealm really wanted to sell it they'd have to tone down the violence a lot all for an audience that would rather play SF or Tekken. So of course they don't even want to bother with that.

For me personally, I would like to add more retro characters like Billy and Jimmy Lee from the Double Dragon series, Bill and Lance from the Contra series. Maybe also add Lara Croft from the Tomb Raider series as well. It would be nice to have at least one character from Killer Instinct.
Oh cool, nice to know the moment I've finally gotten a Nintendo Switch OLED, and am really getting interested in Smash Ultimate it might be replaced. Fun.

Honestly I don’t even think we need another game. Just keep updating Ultimate, add new characters, and port the game for the inevitable new generation console.
I also really would love to see Impa, based on her Age of Calamity move set. She is a popular character in that game, and Zelda is LONG overdue for a newcomer and Impa is the only solid option.
The current Zelda reps themselves have a lot of problems, the links are just copy pasted with *slightly* different attributes, ganon is a slower captain falcon clone, sheik and Zelda are fine the way they are tho.
@@NetherKingVulcannus not disagreeing there. However, am pretty sure Ganondorf will be restyled after TOTK next Smash. There's no reason not to. I'd like Link to receive those two handed sword Smash attacks too, and agree with all other changes proposed to Young and Toon Link, however ngl I could do without them and Sheik, especially if it means room for newcomers. Impa being the front runner here. Zelda restyled after TOTK would be great too. In general, remix the Triforce duo and remix Sheik into Impa, then maybe consider semi clones as Young / Toon Link. Pig Ganon is also a cool idea.

Hot take... there won't be a story mode, but there will be an expansion for World of Light with new spirits and bosses (like the return of Porky, Rayquaza, and Duon... and maybe a secret Tabuu fight? 👀). But there will be a Target Smash :0 just use one background and a set of assets that could be used for all Target stages. I could imagine DLC taking slightly longer because of it, but totally possible. Same time to develop a story mode for them.

I don't agree with the idea that the next game would be a "Deluxe". The reason they did a lot of these was because of the commercial failure of the Wii U. They ported these games as "Deluxe" to the Switch so that those games could reach a wider audience with the success of the Switch. If they were going to do that for any game, it would have been Smash 4 being the Deluxe as it ports to the Switch. The Switch already has a lot of sales, and a lot of people owning Smash Ultimate, so there's no need. They typically build off of the previous Smash game when developing the next game anyways. Brawl was built of of Melee, Smash 4 was built off of Brawl, and Ultimate was built off of Smash 4.

For a new character, just look at the first 12 characters, they all have more than one characters representing their franchise now. Except ONE chatacter, and thats Captain Falcon. So I would add Black Shadow to the roster.

I would actually love to see a much more trimmed down Smash, assuming we do get a future entry. 20-30 fighters, no third-party fighters, no echoes, a balance of fighters from each series, meaning not having half the roster be Fire Emblem. But, I think we do need to entertain the idea that we may never get another Smash game, and that would be fine. Ultimate is a great one to end on.
With the success of elden ring and the fact bandai namco was involved (also it has a Japanese developmrnt team) so I reckon tarnished has a pretty good chance

Ngl.. a lot of these choices feel..too safe. I do find it hilarious that out of all the times that Sakurai has said he was done, we didn’t believe him. Now that he kinda soft confirmed a game we suddenly believe him now? Weird. So if we’re going to believe Sakurai..wouldn’t make sense to have a smaller roster? He even said a number of times getting the rights to some of those characters would be hard and we SHOULD expect a smaller roster. Interesting choices for DLC but that base roster spot..needs help

I will say that, I think it feels a bit off to have the "future Pokemon Game Slot", but not one for Fire Emblem, I feel.
It's pretty clear that this roster is literally just western pandering being pased as predictions. Most of the characters you listed are only really requested in the West instead of Japan, the country where Nintendo comes from. Where is the obvious Tales rep? Where is the imminent second Splatoon rep? Why MK a franchise that is LITERALLY NOT SOLD in Japan instead of you know, Soulcalibur or Guilty Gear? Why Shantae as the indie pick instead of Quote who literally started the indie boom or Reimu who has an entire convention dedicated to her franchise out of sheer popularity? Why two Activision reps when Nintendo would most likely not want to have anything to do with them due to all the drama? And why Master Chief a character who has never had a game on Nintendo and is also unheard of in Japan in such an important place as the final slot? Before you bring in the "but Microsoft and Nintendo are such buddy buddies!!" argument, let me remind you that they got Banjo and Steve from them as actual fighters (and all the Bethesda mii costumes since they were bought) and among them Chief was nowhere to be seen. If there's another rule besides being from a videogame, then having at least one actual appearance on Nintendo systems before being considered should be it (and no, Fortnite skins don't count).
That said, I'm not a fan of the idea of porting the same game to the new console and have people pay $60 again for it + some new content. This is not a MK8 situation in which the console it was originally sold on was a failure and as such not a lot of people got to experience it, so they just ported it to save themselves the need of making another game and years later they feel the need to make DLC for it due to how good it was still selling. SSBU on the other hand sold over 30 million copies, and of those 30 million costumers I don't think a lot would be willing to pay again for the same game. I just want the series to go on a new direction for once, they already released their "ultimate" game so do what other FG franchises have done and reboot it all.

I'll prefer the ultimate deluxe because I didn't have any money to get the dlc content. This is a win for me.
It was confirmed that the next console will have access to your switch library of games, so a deluxe would not make sense in any shape or form. the only reason all of these wii u deluxe versions exist is because of how disastrous the wii u was as a console for Nintendo. Why try to sell everyone a game they all have access to when you can just sell more dlc for said game, it's that simple.
and if they do make a brand new smash for next gen then I feel the roster size would simply shrink back down to the size of smash 4's roster excluding new characters. That would be about 58+? 66 with new characters. This seems like a lot remaining, but it really isn't considering all the stages, music, and more that will most likely be cut out of the game.
I feel the best thing for smash would be to shrink down each series to its core characters, so like the mario bros series would include: the bros - mario and luigi. who go to stop bowser to save princess peach. there, that is the mario series. of course yoshi and wario would stay too as they are classed as being apart of their own series. If you did this with every series you would have 45 character (not counting third party). plenty of wiggle room to throw back in characters like daisy, rosalina, and some others while having a lot of room to add new characters.
I think Geno should definitely be in the next game but Crash Bandicoot is an absolute must!!
The Deluxe Wii U ports made sense on the Switch. Most gamers didn't have a Wii U and you couldn't fit a disc drive on the Switch so backwards compatibility wasn't an option. Why would they make Deluxe ports of Switch games on the successor? If it has backwards compatibility having a port would be redundant, and having a small card as the Switch's physical game size would be easy to put on the next device. Even if it doesn't have backwards compatibility (which wouldn't make much sense), the Switch is currently the 3rd best selling platform of all time and many people already played Smash Ultimate. With a system seller like the Smash Bros. franchise wouldn't they want to make a new game to entice a larger audience? Making a port would be a turn off for many people that already played it on the Switch even with a few new bells and whistles.

What’s crazy is that smash can still makes money to this day with just cosmetics alone! Look and Xenoverse 2, MK8 and Shinobi Strikers, those games are alive after around 6 plus years of support. Smash is undoubtedly one of the best fighting game around, but I also get why they won’t.
I can see Noah from Xenoblade join as well as Ryu Hayabusa.

Look the reason why I think a new game is more likely in order for a deluxe game to make sense the next console can not be backwards compatible but people want backwards compatibility but If the next switch was backwards compatible then ultimate deluxe would be fighting against ultimate
The different the deluxe games on the switch were in the wii u witch…you can’t play on the switch so unless you want Nintendo to make it so you can’t play any switch games on the switch 2 then…..I feel smash 6 is more likely then ultimate deluxe
I’d 1000% buy the game just for N. I think it would be cool if he himself fought and used his many Pokémon as moves, reflecting his nature as an unorthodox Pokémon trainer

They focused on a lot of RPG characters in ultimate, so I hope they focus on some more iconic characters this time around. Sans made it in as a costume so it would be a crime if not a single undertale character actually made it in. Theres so many options. I just hope every other character isn’t an “anime swordsman” as the community likes to call it
I'm surprised that people sleep on 2B. She is popular choice in both east and west. Nier Automada is on Switch. Her design can be tweaked like Pyra and Mythra.

Nahh at this point, I think Shantae (or Undertale) are more iconic BUT I'd still give it to Shovel Knight as the indie rep, because I feel Sakurai is more inclined to add them since they were very popular back in the day (which is why I assume he made it in as an assist)

While I don't think the current game can be expanded, the problem is Smash Ultimate is already oversaturated with Mario characters so it cannot get more.
A new Smash would rather be a better chance to insert new Mario additons like Waluigi and Birdo when the old ones are cut.

If deluxe is a port, Waluigi can't be an option because he's an assist trophy.

first of all, including slippi is a stupid choice considering there hasnt been a new starfox game since forever. Also i think we dont need a new street fighter rep because ultimate already has 2. That is a waste of a slot.Even though she has been requested for years i dont think shantae should be the indie rep, something like the knight from hollow knight would be better. PC gaming is hugely under represented in smash so i think we need a pc gaming rep. My choice here would be gordon freeman because of the revolutionary aspect of half life. Adding gordon freeman would be like adding counter strike, team fortress, and basically every fps game after 1998 to smash. Also the problem with adding master chief (even though i like him) would be that he doesnt do anything in the games except shoot a gun.He would just be a broken zoner with dlc privilege. On the other hand, gordon has a variety of weapons including his iconic crowbar. He could use guns like the gauss gun for creative movement. Heck, you could even add bhopping into the game! Maybe he can rocket jump just like in quake or team fortress. The are endless possibilities
A lot of people would hate me on this but if they added Dixie I wanted her to be parted up with Kiddy like ice climbers. The move set is like already there. More so if it was just her by herself. Like sje could toss him around do the thing where shes rolls around on him like a ball. Them you have all the characters from DKC

Uh, at this point we already know that different characters require different movesets, which means they factually use multiple amount of budgets, like Pokemon Trainer Team and Samus.
Ice Climbers worked because Popo and Nana actually don't have difference. But in this case, Samus with and without armors are actually different. So the latter costs more budget.
