- Used FiestaST150 Buying guide
I get asked questions about what to look out for when buying a Fiesta S150 all the time so I decided to put together a big video together with everything you'l need to know when going to buy a Fiesta ST150.
Any other issues I haven't mentioned put them down in the comments so we can help people when they're looking to buy their Fiesta ST!
It's split up into three sections:
1. Walk Away - Walk away form the sale, these are things that are gonna be to expensive to fix or make a car underivable!
Bottom end knock
Gearbox issues
Timing chain slack (rattle)
Waterpumps
Burning oil
2. Re-negotiate the price - These are things you can use to wiggle a better price out o the car during negotiations.
Power steering pump
Stiff gears when hot
Thermostat stuck open £15 easy job
PCV valve (dodgy idle)
Stalling in reverse (idle issue)
Seat catches / handles snapped / not working
Wheel arch rust
Heated front window partially working
Pre-facelift (make sure engine is cold before starting having issues starting up first time - ECU update £90
Broken Springs are common - will fail or be an advisory on an MOT so I’d check the paperwork and check the springs
Rusty Brake lines
Heated seats
Auto wiper, lights and folding mirrors working?
3. Dont worry - these are thing you don't need to worry about with the car so go ahead with the purchase!
Crunch into reverse
Dodgy idle on cold startup
Some Warning lights on the dash
Bonnet Stone chips
Below are the video I used to show example of issues:
• Ford Fiesta st mk6.5 b...
• fiesta mk6 knocking

I had a st150 great car no issues at all 60000miles.Regret selling it.Great video
Great little guide, been looking for a small hatch so I can leave the big family car at home more and have found memories of owning a (and ragging) a 1.4 mk6 in my younger years. Even the 1.4 had the reverse crunch. Like the fact you did the quick list up front as it will be useful to check back when viewing some.
I really appreciate how you present you vids man, just straight to the point, and very informative. Keep up with this content mate!
You’ve pretty much covered it all Jay nice one. One thing that I negotiated with when I got my ST150 was alloy kerb, particularly because one alloy had a chunk of the sidewall missing 😂
Whoa they must have really love hitting them curbs! how you got a good deal!
JayMono Got my ST from a dealer. As you know the standard alloys are low profile so more prone to learning. I didn’t negotiate just through that, which was good I noticed as the tyre constantly gradually lost pressure which was fun. Heated front windscreen didn’t work too
Just brought mine and same thing here. Think it could of been the same car🤣 u still got it
Great vid. Aux belt is also a common one plus the aux belt tensioner. That gives off a tinny rattle mostly under 1st gear pull away load and goes away once you're moving. Both really cheap and easy fixes too. As you said the tricky clutch at low speeds is a standard quirk. Best bet is to dip the clutch and roll into parking spaces. If you're not on the ball it's either close to stalling or revving the nuts off it like a granny haha
Didn't know about the Aux belt & tensioner, definitely a good thing to look out for!
The idle is something you have to get used to big time
Interesting video, I got mine post-facelift 2008 unit from my dad and he bought it with 55K km (around 90K when I bought it). I think I had very bad luck, I got bottom end knock fail 1 year after buying the car.
We checked it in our local workshop and concluded that maybe cheap oil (my dad's fault) caused the issue or maybe as we also had a weird inlet knocking sound for several months, maybe a piece of the inlet manifold got sucked into the engine causing a big trouble...
I decided to change the complete engine, we managed to get a good unit (30K km) but it was not cheap... From my side you can add to the list checking inlet manifold sounds, it seems that flaps get loose and it could cause some failures.
Also I've got the water pump changed last week due to a leak and was not so expensive as you said in the video (~160€ /£150).
YePs that sucks! Luckily the ones in the Uk don’t have the flaps on the inlet manifold so they don’t end up snapping and going into the engine!
Lots of people have pointed out the the price of the water pump, you can definitely get it done cheaper, I wouldn’t wanna have to do it straight after buying the car!
Cheers bud! I bought a sweet little red ST 150 yesterday using this guide. Really happy with it!
8:50 you shouldn’t actually be revving in reverse until you find the bite that’s what I do never stalled in reverse but my partner does what most people do and revs first before the bite and he’s stalled my car a lot of times
I also bought mine with an engine light was just an o2 sensor cheap fix
Agree about the wheel arch rust and front headed windscreen. On my zetec s theres a little rust on the edge near the jack point. The headed windscreen don't work on mine but I'd normally use warm water and de-icer when theres ice.
Could also look at the brake hoses going to the rear brakes as corrosion can build up (mine was especially on the right pipe) which can cause it to fail and leak out brake fluid.
Yeah breaks are fairly common, will normally get picked up on a MOT advisory before they go!
@@jaymono6498 it was the MOT inspector who actually made a hole in the brake hose pipe whilst he probably was poking around. Another thing which don't know is common is the window regulator. The regulator on the driver side was already on its way out when I bought the car and recently again its broke which I suspect the cable snapped (after being installed after a year)
@@F0rdy57 my car actually failed MOT then as the hole in the pipe must of caused it to take in air resulting in the brake pedal to creap down all the way when pressed. Luckily noticed the puddle of brake fluid on the driveway and the MOT inspector confessing after we asked about it.
@@zaink7037 thats annoying, I guess its loads better than the brake failing whilst you're driving!
don’t use warm water you’ll get more cracks
One other thing I know of is Ticky injectors not to be mistaken for timing chain rattle
(Ticking injectors completely normal)
paul 9322 how do you now it’ll be ticky injectors instead of the timing chain?
Timing chain would be metallic rattle/grinding sound injectors are more of a ticking/clicking
If the noise was coming from timing chain I take it would be heard all the time? Not just at quarter pedal?
Good guide Jay! You covered all the important stuff. Things that I often say to check are that are commonly broken, seat latches, sun visors. Make sure the boot opens with key and button on dash (no to hard to fix this stuff), wrong colour coolant (genuine coolant is orange) (check for cracks in coolant tank while you are here) might put me off as it potentially means it has wrong oil and plugs etc also, facelift can stall when starting if it's on stock map (that's fine). I imagine all the rear motor mount rubbers are cracked or broken by this point if they'd not been changed (fairly inexpensive to replace or upgrade).
Probably be wary if it has an omex rev limiter.
Definitely worth checking all of them, can ask some cash of if your find any of them issues.
I've heard loads bad things about the omex limiters, I'd avoid them aha
Nice! With your guide I can afford one because all have 80% of negotiable problem of your list.
Very helpful, especially recording the sound to listen for!
So my ST150 when I start it up cold, the revvs go up for a few seconds as normal but then sits at 1500 revvs for around 5mins until completley warm and then drops to normal. Iv noticed a split in the air intake pipe so have a new one on the way and hope this is the only issue. Not looking forward to replacing the pcv hose and valve...
Great videos though and very helpful for saving some extra costs!!
This guide is brilliant! Thank you so much for sharing. Off to view and test drive a low mileage (50,000miles) FFSH ST150 tomorrow. Hopefully it will be as pristine as it shows in the photos.
Sorry for the late reply, how the ST150 you found was a good one!
My 57plate just past it's MoT with nothing wrong with 123k done. Need to get alignment done though, only 23HC from the exhaust, cat is still good! (Shell V power used!)
Awesome, good to hear some older ones are taken care of!
Appreciate the video, going to view one this week all being well so this has given me a great insight
Thank you for your advices. I'm thinking about buying this car. Is an average oil consumption of 0.1L/1000km seems reasonable to you? No smoke whatsoever.
I have a Ford Fiesta st 4xr 2007 and it has the exact same thing with the crunching in the reverse gear and I thought something was wrong so this video had just made me less worried about that😂
Bought one on Friday using your guide, thanks man!! Still to get it home though, thanks to storm Dennis!
hopefully you've got it home by now!
Really helpful, thinking of getting one as a project car alongside my every day runaround.
WOW so USEFUL. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put in Just to help us.
A water pump costs about 20£ new
No 125 know 😂
I bought a 2005 ST, quite cheap, very high mileage, seems to be well maintained, one owner.
Put the oil consumption is pretty high. 1 liter in 1000 km. No smoke, considered full power. Suction on oil filler cap. Should I be worrying about?
Hoe much mileage?
@@gwanrodeheus8051 300 000. But after one Year daily driving he still works perfect.
@@pavlovsk nice man didn’t have any damage? And for what price
@@gwanrodeheus8051 no damage yet, I bought it for 3000€
The gearbox is strong. It’s the little cog’s in the diff that sht themselves when you thrash it to hard. Get lsd upgrade. Mtx75 is better gearbox than ib5.
St150 100.000 miles yellow warning light. Price will be approx EUR 1500 . It's a blind buy can't check before end of auction. Would you buy it or leave it? It's on Ebay. Plate / Tüv nearly new.
Angelheart 76 potentially, I’m not sure what the European prices are like for these! Do you know why the warning light is on?
Stiff gears when hot is a super easy fix mate. a few vids out there but it's a case of taking a metal plate off, cleaning the metal bar it pivets on and greasing it up but also giving the bush inside the plate a quick sand and clean and grease. My gears was super smooth after that and didn't stiffen up when car warmed up after 20 mins or so.
This is gonna be a job I'm doing on mine soon, looks like an easy fix! mine get quite stiff after about 30 mins of driving
@@jaymono6498 try this one jay. just one I added to a potential list of problems in the future! th-cam.com/video/Oc2tb6_bYWU/w-d-xo.html
Top vid fella think you covered everything good job 👍
hello jay.. where can i order seats half leder for st150 and bumper back and front... im from rome italy i have ford fiesta 2007...thankyou..
I have a mk6 and recently its started making a noise when I turn my steering wheel but I took it to two garages and they fixed other issues but not the one I was having.
quickfit fixed my tire which had a slow puncher and Halfords fixed my exhaust that had split but tbh I took it to Halfords to fix my steering issue but they failed to do that. I think it could be my turning belt as its been said to get a new one at 75000 and im past that now but I put new steering fluid in it and it fixed the issue but then suddenly it started again making the sound
I had two mates take videos and send it to their uncle and dad and they came back with different answers but I need to be sure what it is as then I can ask a garage to fi it and hopefully third time lucky it will be fixed
It might be the power steering pump mate, the fluid runs around the side of the engine and gets cooked easy and end sup make the pump whine. Does it make the sound if you move the wheels full lock either way when the cars stationary?
@@jaymono6498 turns out it was a clip to the cable which was allowing it to leak which was causing me problems. im looking at maybe doing that movement kit thing so I can get rid of the cooking issue
Look out for high oil consumption with no leaks or blue smoke on these engines.
Yo ,thx 4 this video,it is wery helpfull, I have a 15 years old baby, and am gonna keep it cos I wery like it ,but am so specific to if I hear any noise an gonna fix it right a way,but a lot of things I have done am still worry about my baby. We're change the pcv pipe ,and still doing low rates of rpm just when I rolling ,not stop ,not going. Before it was 2500rpm and 3000rpm then we change the valve ,and the pipe ,now she doing low rates of rpm,1000,from 400rpm,and i don't know what's wrong. If you can help some info ,i would very thankful.
Another superb vid mate. Smashing it out the park fella.
hi.. id like to ask you about how the car deliver the power.. is it linear from 1000 rpm or 1500 or is empty in the low revs and after 4000 starts to push harder?
Thank for the video, very useful. Is there a big difference between the Fiesta ST and the Fiesta ST 150? Or can I use this video for the Fiesta ST as well.
The Fiesta ST is the Fiesta ST150! :)
My power steering fluid is black need it changing, been quoted by a mechanic 40 quid including the fluid...Boss vid bro
Get it changed!
what's a ford fiesta ghia?
I currently drive a 2005 fiesta mk6 three door with the 1.6 litre engine ( pre facelift) that has 306,000 kms on it and I love it! It’s a great little car!
Today I was offered a 2008 fiesta st (XR4 in the Aussie market) with only 95,000kms on it and I am I seriously considering buying the car( to drive on the weekends). They are pretty rare here with only 2000 or so for the aussie market.
I was offered it for a very good price and I don’t know if I should go for it. What does everyone think?
Also, Thankyou so much for the tips! This was a great video!
Did you do it?
@@paulaus I wasn’t able to pull together the amount of money I needed. Makes me so sad to think about the car that got away :(
@@ethanHEART1 Sorry to hear. There are some nice ones still around so all is not lost. I am considering one for some track day action.
@@paulaus I’d love to have one for just normal driving. The idea of track days sounds awesome! I hope you are able to find on that is appropriate for track days!
Nice video! Im from germany and want to get one as my first car. What do you think about buying a fiesta st as a first car? Im driving now 7 months with my parents cars. A ford focus mk3 105hp 1.6L and a another mk3 1.5 ecoboost 150hp.
Go for it! They're not too powerful & are a little bit faster than what people normally would have for a first car!
are these the same for a MK 6 ZetecS?
Great video , by the way isn't a warning light on a m.o.t failure ?
C k Garbett I’ve head that recently, not too sure if it’s just rumors or not. If it’s true then I’d definitely be avoiding the car as you’d have to pay to get it taken off otherwise an MOT fail!
@@jaymono6498 will look in to it thanks for your reply Cheer's bud.
Anyone have any idea why my st150 will turn over but won’t start, it can take up to half hour to get it going & it’s becoming more frequent. Any info would be great
Recently had a new batteries and the terminals are clean
Hello mate, my st has done high mileage, no smoke, engine sounds great, but at quarter pedal, I got a metal vibrating noise, doesn't matter what revs you are at, or gear, noise never gets louder, or quicker, after quarter pedal no noise and before quarter pedal no noise either, just had pcv done and uprated hose, and drive shaft seals done, any help will be grateful, thanks liam
Also extra power doesn't kick in all the time, could it be injectors??
Hey mate, I had a similar issue in an old car and it turned out to be the head shield welding had snapped causing a vibration at a certain rev range!
Might be an injector, does it fail to start at all or run lumpy/misfire?
No problems starting, runs amazing
Great vid mate.
Bought my red mk6 ST three years ago.
Yep! Front spring snapped.
Engine management light came on. Had O2 oxygen sensor changed but light came back on. Turned out to be loose wiring to the sensors.
ESP light (traction control) came on. Turned out to be the Yaw Rate Sensor. £800 for the part. Absolutely gutted!
Now I just have to get a creaking coming from the back looked at.
Started after a HGV cut across me, causing wing damage.
Any ideas what that might be would be appreciated.
Yeah I get the crunch in reverse.
I just put it in 2nd, rev, then straight in reverse.
Love my ST though. And thinking of copying a few of your mods.
Sounds like you've spend a fair few pennies getting her sorted out! The creaking might be suspension related, my have push the spring out of place or have messed with a suspension part potentially.
Let us know if you do any of the mods!
i want to buy a 2006 model with 76 000 miles and im not sure if its the correct mileage how could i check ?
Matthew rtf the UK government website allows you to see all of the previous years MOTs now, you can check what the mileage was at each MOT and make sure there no random drops or any mileage not accounted for!
@@jaymono6498 thank you so much!
Another great video! Can help out a lot of people. :)
Hi mate my power steering fluid is black and when I turn my steering wheel left to right there is a knocking sound like something is loose. You ever had this problem with yours ?
I had black fluid, I ended up relocating my power steering reservoir and changing the fluid, the pump can hiss a bit but it doesn't make a knocking sound..
How are you !!! my ST stays accelerated. When I give a gas picket slow down the rpm and idle remains at 1500 rpm is accelerated that you think it? greetings from Mexico
Hey!
It sounds like the PCV valve is split, its a common problem and its just the ECU adding more fuel to the system and theres extra air coming in under low revs. Ive got a video of changing mine out that you can follow! :)
Thank you very much for the information. I'm going to watch the video to change it and see if the problem is removed
Hey guys !
Im coming late here i hope i get response :p
I have a fiesta st 150
And my fiesta miss the little the covers on the sills, for the "car jack"...
Dis someone have a link for buying it ? Thx !!!
And sry for m'y bad english, im not that good :)
Hey! Im thinking about buying a st150 with 250.000 km for just 800 Euros as a little fun car to work on and drive in the summer. It says that it burns oil but I can do piston rings and valve jobs myself if its just that...
The question is: do you think the car will die within the next 100.000?
What's the normal life expctancy of this car?
Thanks in advance :)
Why worry if you can rebuild the engine to better than new condition?
Good video man, helped a lot thanks
Hi, just a quick question when you fitted your power steering relocation kit did the kit come with clips to secure the hoses or did you cable tie them to the slam panel ?
Mark Sanderson I ended up cabling tieing them, I think there was 1 cable tie in the kit but I used about 4 in total :)
Hello bud. I’ve watched your TH-cam channel on ST150 about the comment faults! I’ve just purchased a 2005 ST150 and notice there’s a problem, when my lights are on and my rear lights basically my rear side lights work but when I brake my side lights shut off and my brake lights don’t bright up only my centre top light.. also when stationary with my lights will be on I’ll apply the brakes and everything goes dim? Hope this is enough information it’s the best I can give. Not sure if it’s an electrical problem?
Hey! Thanks for the support!
That issue seems weird.. sound like some of the wiring may be messed about with the rear lights, have you tried the obvious like checking/replacing the bulbs, it’s strange that the the rear sidelights would turn off and nothing else happen..
by everything going dim is it just the lights or do the dash speedo lights also dim coz it kinda Sounds like it could be a dodgy earth somewhere, or maybe low voltage on your battery.
JayMono Hey! Thank you for the reply back! I haven’t checked just yet but I was told it could it could be bulb or earth!
Brings me to my next question! I’m getting a slight tapping noise from the top of the engine nothing major, there’s no power lose! I’ve taken it to 12 different garages and they’ve heard it noise and all have said hydraulic lifter? Because it’s a tapping sound. And was told the chain noise is a different sound? I need an expert that knows about these st150s inside and out! Bearing in mind it’s never been serviced
Jason Saunders 12 different garages! That’s crazy aha.
To be fair it doesn’t sound like a big problem, as you saw in the video it’s very obvious when you’ve got the wrong kinda tapping noise with the engine, these engines can sound a little bit Tappy anyways as they’re timed with a chain rather than a belt. The mechanics are probably correct in their suggestions about the lifter. Or it might not be anything at all!
Also - get the car serviced! Will do it ever chance of lasting longer :)
JayMono well I asked all the garages on the sound. But yeah it’s crazy, only just brought it Friday there was a rattle from the heat shield as it was loose and rattling. But yeah all the garages said hydraulic lifters and timing chain are two different sounds? and they all said it’s more a tapping noise? I know I’ve not brought a pot of gold and it will need money spent on it... but I’ve always liked these st150s probably gonna cost me a bomb but that doesn’t matter lol
Check the rear double filament bulbs and make sure they are in correctly, they have offset pins, and if they are in the wrong way, it will lead to other lights illuminating
Thanks for this guide, used it today to buy one but it had a few of the walkway points so glad that i didn't buy it
Glad the guide helped!
is 130,000 miles too many to be entertaining for a 2nd hander?
As long as its been services it should be okay, I'd probably expect the timing chain to be changed at by that point though!
Great video.
thanks for the vid very imformative 👍 i was thinking of buying a fiesta st but after this i wont bother 😕 ime just gona get a type r a much beter car and far fewer problems 😆👍
Great vid thanks.
It’s £37 for a water pump how is it £200 if you do it yourself?
@@F0rdy57 Think I meant to say around £100 yourself (pump & coolant) Belt would deffo be worth doing whilst ya down there. Still something you wouldn't want do as soon as your bought the car!

James Long hit me up on insta DM I don’t really use my insta much anymore!
Really good video
Is it reliable or this issues are often happening fiesta problems?
They're reliable cars, even more so when properly maintained etc, Like with any car they have their common issues!
What's a good mod to do to a standard fiesta st150?
Upgraded throttle body and induction kit always a good start
Induction kit & exhaust flexi pipe. Don't bother with the throttle body
@@F0rdy57 nice man I only went for a ram Air cold air feed but was happy with that result then cha ged to 60mm throttle body gave even better throttle response and more pull then got a sports cat system and it sounds lush. Great cars for doing mods on.
@@mattallen3238 what does an exhaust flexi pipe do mate never heard of them? Do they give much extra bhp? I went for a sports cat system and will upgrade the manifold later although they only squeeze about 5-10 extra bhp. With my mods done if I get cosworth cams and a tune will see around 190-200bhp
air filter (k&n, mountune, ggr, ram air , itg etc), flexi pipe (only if you have no intention of doing headers), remap ((dreamscience etc) is good even on stock), I wouldn't worry about 60m throttle body until you are at least have 185+ hp with cams, good time to do it is when you put a new inlet on.
good informative video. cheers
awesewe vid mate! Made me feel at ease about my fiesta ST!
Randomzebra123 glad I could help!
Excellent vid, my only input is that, an engine warning light is an MOT failure.

Yeah I watched your vid when i installed mine..lol cheers.
Fair play 35sec.. Done...😁
I’m getting an st whoop need your wisdom! 😂
I fully rebuilt my whole car . 15000 miles on it now. If you like the car why not spend the money. If you know what your doing.
Waterpumps aren't expensive to replace
500-1000 to fix a big end knock? Your mechanic is still operating on 1967 pricing 😅
good work help me out does , london
This is good for owners get all the jobs done and don’t need to take the money off in a sale. They can walk away from the buyer. Lol
bottom end knock for 500-1000 not worth the value, that hasn't aged 😂
Yeah mate, this, this and this is broken, money off? Oh and money off for this please mate. Infact, just give us the car for free it's a POS. Good advice though, nice video.
CarlGB ahah thanks! Always gotta get yourself a deal!
I would highly recommend to take this %#@?! Split PCV hose off. Like get rid of this thing. It is made out of plastic, of course, and it WILL break. When it breaks, oh god. Tiny bits of plastic going through your valves. Everybody likes it right? Not really. So get rid of this crappy PCV valve. Also i'm pretty sure it is restrincting air flow. At least a little bit.
Yeah I know a few people blank these PCV when upgrading their inlet manifolds, dunno what effect it has on an engine but I assume its pretty safe as no ones complaining. The PCV on thee cars are always an issue!
