Hammond's mistake was championing the Citreon instead of the other two contemporary Hot Hatch class leaders. Renault and Honda's Type R have long been the cars that gave Ford's ST division the most challenge, not Citreon, not Seat, and not Peugeot.
These were about 12-13k while even then a Civic Type R was about 18k. The only Renault RS comparable in price would be either the Clio RS 172/182 which even then were a bit more expensive but probably a little faster as well or the Twingo RS 133 which came and went without anyone noticing hardly. Actually the best performers of the hot hatches from the 80's were 1. VW Corrado G60 160hp 2. Opel Kadett GSI16v 150hp , 3. Golf GTI 16v 129hp. All three had emissions control. The Escort RSturbo was a great hot hatch 1.6turbo 132hp but had no cat converter and was disqualified in a German Auto, Motor and Sport Hot Hatch test in 1988 or 89.
AetiusPraetorian corrado had a supercharger, kadett (or Astra as it is known in the UK) was 16 valve, as was the Golf. the Escort was running technology in the basic engine that was tested in the 70's and, in carburettor, non turbo form, was launched in 1980 with mechanical fuel injection added in 1981, if memory serves me. distributorless ignition was trialled on the RS1600i in 1981 and the turbo wasnt added to the range until around 1985. ford was ALWAYS playing catch-up in the 80's with their engines, with the exception of the Cosworth. the car that spawned the road going rally car for the masses (Lancia had a bad reputation and were rare in the UK and Audi were VERY expensive, compared to ford, opel (Vauxhall in the UK) VW etc) LONG before the Mitsubishi Evo and Subaru WRX etc. and even though the cosworths may not be as fast as the mitsubishi or subaru, theyre STILL the better car
Peter Lattimer Yeah I remember the Sierra Cosworth. Was a pretty bad ass car in those days, of course so was the M3 and MB 190E Evo price for these two was abit higher. I know the Escort RS turbo was kind of a throwback in tech, but still performed quite well considering. The Kadett (Astra) GSi16v was an excellent racer from those days. Even the GSi's with just the standard 2.0i-OHC (115-129hp) gave the Golf GTI, GTI16v a spanking. They should have also shown the Peugeot 205 GTI 1.9. The one VW I liked back in the late 80's was the Corrado G60 and later the VR6. Bad ass little hatchback. It amazes me how much HP it takes today to get smaller but heavier hatch's to achieve decent 0-100km times.
AetiusPraetorian id totally forgotten the 205 GTi, although the 1.6 was better set up in the suspension department for UK roads (the 1.9 was too stiffly sprung and the bodyshells were prone to flexing and cracking at welded joints because of it) but again, running much newer tech than the old RS turbo escort (and later, fiesta) as for smaller and heavier needing more power to achieve the same 0-60mph times (0-100km/h) whilst i do agree, and it takes more power to achieve the same times as it did with a lighter car (obviously) im not necessarily certain than the cars ARE smaller! for example, i currently own a 2010 ford mondeo. this is as big, and heavier, than the 1994 Ford Granada (Ford Scorpio, depending where you are from) i owned 15 years ago. the current ford fiesta we have in the UK is much heavier and bigger than the original Ford escort was, and its the same with all other cars too. the original 205 gti was VERY light. its modern equivalent is meant to be the 208, but i reckon the 107 is probably nearer the size of the original 205, and the new car will be MUCH heavier! the Polo is now the size of an early Golf, and also heavier than the original Golf, Corrado was a replacement for the original Scirocco, and because they were based on the Golf, the new Sciricco is much bigger and heavier etc...... so yes, theyre heavier cars and need more power. also we, as buyers, demand more equipment than ever, air-con, power steering, ABS, Airbags etc all add to weight and drag. are the cars smaller? no. they have just upsized each model and can now slot in a new model at the smaller end of the range.
This was shown on TV in 2004, which is just as far away from today in 2022 as it is to 1986. The 2000’s in the 2020’s is the equivalent of the 1980’s in the 2000’s
The Citroën is way more user friendly and cheaper to buy and run than the ford. Plus that fiesta looked like an 80s throwback whereas the C2 has aged quite well!
lovin' the face of hammond in the thumbnail! also, may i point out Top Gear did a typo and in the description wrote "...and the Citron C2 VTS against..."
Let me just clarify...I've owned a fiesta st 150bhp and now I have a citreon c2 1.6 diesel turbo vts stage 1 mapped 143bhp 238lbs foot and I can honestly say my citreon would piss all over my fiesta st ...plus 30 pound a year tax a lot less on insurance and way way better mpg ...job done..
A stock N/a car vs a mapped turbo car is an unfair comparison. Of course the turbo car is going to be quicker. An ST150 with a basic bolt on turbo kit makes 230bhp+ but that’s not a fair comparison either tbh.
Got an XR4 (Aussie equivalent identical to the ST minus the ST badge), its a dream to drive, especially around the corners, feels quite quick and snappy, has a light flywheel though so requires a bit of revving to prevent stalling, otherwise steering is tight, sticks to the road like cement, brakes are good and its an overall good buy, just has issues with reliability, both of the drivers seats no longer pull forward so can't get into back, boot rattles and the driver's window motor is busted (reportedly common problem). As an all rounder, I don't know much better for the price, something comparable to it however is the Polo GTI but doesn't have the same "fizz".
I wish more people love Fords over here in North America, everyone I know bashes Ford and says Found On Road Dead and says EcoBurst-into-flames. But over there in the UK, everyone loves them, even though we have the same cars like the Kuga/Escape (My personal fav), Edge, Ecosport, and soon Explorer. Although we won't have the Mondeo/Fusion, Fiesta and Focus anymore ;--;
Sorry, but I'm with Jezza on this one. I just can' pick a french hatchback over an american one. The Ford is full of pride and power and history while the Citroen is built by the same company that did the 2CV. At least it doesn't have 17 reverse gears ;)

AetiusPraetorian id totally forgotten the 205 GTi, although the 1.6 was better set up in the suspension department for UK roads (the 1.9 was too stiffly sprung and the bodyshells were prone to flexing and cracking at welded joints because of it) but again, running much newer tech than the old RS turbo escort (and later, fiesta)
as for smaller and heavier needing more power to achieve the same 0-60mph times (0-100km/h) whilst i do agree, and it takes more power to achieve the same times as it did with a lighter car (obviously) im not necessarily certain than the cars ARE smaller! for example, i currently own a 2010 ford mondeo. this is as big, and heavier, than the 1994 Ford Granada (Ford Scorpio, depending where you are from) i owned 15 years ago. the current ford fiesta we have in the UK is much heavier and bigger than the original Ford escort was, and its the same with all other cars too. the original 205 gti was VERY light. its modern equivalent is meant to be the 208, but i reckon the 107 is probably nearer the size of the original 205, and the new car will be MUCH heavier! the Polo is now the size of an early Golf, and also heavier than the original Golf, Corrado was a replacement for the original Scirocco, and because they were based on the Golf, the new Sciricco is much bigger and heavier etc......
so yes, theyre heavier cars and need more power. also we, as buyers, demand more equipment than ever, air-con, power steering, ABS, Airbags etc all add to weight and drag. are the cars smaller? no. they have just upsized each model and can now slot in a new model at the smaller end of the range.
I have a fiesta mk6, itz a 1.6 zetec, but still a powerful nice car
I have an st it’s like a tiny go cart handles so well engine size is a bit silly for a n/a bit it’s bags of fun
in the description is says Citron C2 VTS when its Citroen
i miss old top gear
;D
Richard is wearing one of James’ shirts while driving that Citroen
This was shown on TV in 2004, which is just as far away from today in 2022 as it is to 1986. The 2000’s in the 2020’s is the equivalent of the 1980’s in the 2000’s
They are the best!
That Fiesta's last MOT was in 2009. It probably got written off.
The Citroën is way more user friendly and cheaper to buy and run than the ford. Plus that fiesta looked like an 80s throwback whereas the C2 has aged quite well!
@@KrispyCrem3 No, they just moved to Eastern Europe. Ford just gone to junk yard. I still have C2 GT running like beast.
You can tell this is some old school shit since they talk about an iPod being modern.
lovin' the face of hammond in the thumbnail! also, may i point out Top Gear did a typo and in the description wrote "...and the Citron C2 VTS against..."
I like both
Let me just clarify...I've owned a fiesta st 150bhp and now I have a citreon c2 1.6 diesel turbo vts stage 1 mapped 143bhp 238lbs foot and I can honestly say my citreon would piss all over my fiesta st ...plus 30 pound a year tax a lot less on insurance and way way better mpg ...job done..
A stock N/a car vs a mapped turbo car is an unfair comparison. Of course the turbo car is going to be quicker.
An ST150 with a basic bolt on turbo kit makes 230bhp+ but that’s not a fair comparison either tbh.
My choice would be either the Ford 3 cylinder turbo Fiesta or the VW, VR6
Hatch. Both are excellent.
How bout an ultimate minivan challenge.
R.I.P. Jeremy Clarkson The Man of the Year :,(
R.I.P Richard Hammond the true man of the year and perhaps the decade
The ford st is also restricted by ford to 148hp for insurance purposes for younger drivers, derestricted it's 165hp
As an all rounder, I don't know much better for the price, something comparable to it however is the Polo GTI but doesn't have the same "fizz".
i personally have the code limited edition of the c2, great car
Everyone knows the only thing Hammond knows about cars is to PRETEND he's the stig.
Whats an I pod?
Ford
They spelled "Citron" wrong in the description
+TopGear Who comments? The Stig? Hammond? ;-)
+Dà wèi Chan Citron mean Lemon so it's correct LOL
I won't forget the fiesta but I will gladly forget the Citroen
That Citroen looks like a Suzuki
4 years late but yes it does
Richard's celebration after winning the off-road race against the German rivals.
And the transmissions on both will die young.
I wish more people love Fords over here in North America, everyone I know bashes Ford and says Found On Road Dead and says EcoBurst-into-flames. But over there in the UK, everyone loves them, even though we have the same cars like the Kuga/Escape (My personal fav), Edge, Ecosport, and soon Explorer. Although we won't have the Mondeo/Fusion, Fiesta and Focus anymore ;--;
In Europe you guys get a bit different cars.
I'm 18 and I've got a Fiesta ST
Sorry, but I'm with Jezza on this one. I just can' pick a french hatchback over an american one. The Ford is full of pride and power and history while the Citroen is built by the same company that did the 2CV. At least it doesn't have 17 reverse gears ;)
Top Gear needs to have Travis Pastrana on their show. I'd like to see how he does in the reasonably priced car.
Ive had my st for 10yrs and have drove it like jezza for 100thousand miles I haven't been to particular about oil changes either and its know knocking from bottom end so hats off to ford it lasted well 🏁
