- I've had a lot of questions recently over instagram (itsleelockwood) about what i dislike about the Fiestas or what are the downsides of them. So i put all the things that i hate about my Fiesta ST into one video!

you can stop the idil problem but clearing build up on air filter inlet. it's where the valve shuts it's a build up and fucks the idil on the st. I have 1 to and no dramas
I bought mine st150 -08 in September, and saw this video BEFORE I started get worrying about these small dislikes. So the only thing I disliked were there was no ashtray. But after 40 year hanging in that sigarett, I stopped smoking, problem solved. So now I do like this litttle rocket.

I can relate to some of these . . . One being a snapped handle on the bloody seat!! But I was sure you was gonna say it needs a sixth gear!! Fifth gear just feels like the car is working hard to crude along! Good video though mate 👍

Since getting mine mountuned about 2 months ago, i noticed the rev fluctuating to be gone... Car also drives better, it's not as bumpy or grumpy when cold... And now that the exhaust has been run in... It pops, bangs and burbles like crazy! It's fun cause mine is tonic blue and almost stock lookin so people who turn their heads thinking it's something like subaru STI or some other fast sports car, see a little fiesta coming makin sporty angry pops! Do have the problem with road presence! Heard ftom someone who owns a mk2 focus RS and a mk6 fiesta st, that they allways sit on your bumper cause "it's just a fiesta", but they never dare doin it when driving the focus! Notice it to, untill you blip down a gear or 2 (especially in 30mph or 50kmh zones going to 50mph or 80kmh) and you leave them for dust in their shitty volvo estates and bmw 120d 's (who they think because they have more horses than the fiesta, will easily beat it)... Untill the "it' s now 50mph zone" sign appears in a sharp corner and they are never able to keep up :p
Gotta agree with you on the seat. I have to adjust myself constantly while driving and adjust rearview mirror...uuhgh

Greetings from South Africa. We (my family) have a 2011 Ford Figo, based on the Fiesta Mk6 with the 1.4 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine and the gears also crunch sometimes when going into reverse.
the crunch is because of no syncros on the reverse gear.
Number 3 I had this. I replaced the map sensor and air intake control valve and it was fine.
My car also does the reverse crunch (MK6 1.4 Flame 2004) And using the 3rd to reverse trick works every time!
or holding the clutch in for a few seconds before putting it in reverse works!

To go into reverse gear, keep the clutch during approximately 3 seconds.... It's in the manual instruction...

I tried this. Also a friend said go to 1st then reverse. None of which changes the random rear gear selection.
My suggestion? Be brutal with the stick. Don't be subtle about it, throw it in, drop the clutch and if it slips, repeat.

Agree to some of these things, but the most annoying for me has to be the idle problem, especially when reversing, I don't have ST version, but 1.3 Duratec, exact same thing. I really get frustrated with this one.
Talk about stealth... I've got a tonic blue fiesta ST150... Blends in with traffic very well, but it doesn't scream "don't screw with me cause i'm a ST" so you do get turds with their shitty lease cars tailgating (even though I'm just over the limit) or pull out in front cause they think it's just a fiesta... Untill on the Autobahn you fly past every one with 220kmh on the clock 😂
The idle never stalls when it's stock or mine didn't but after putting maps on it was stalling every time I put the clutch in while moving. I got the map tweaked and also increased the idle to 750 or 850, which sorted it. The seats are to high, I've seen people put the mk7 recaros in but yet to see anyone get the airbag working. The steering also is a different ratio rack than the other mk6 fiesta models.
My top 5 dislikes would be.
1. Plastic cages on diff bearings. Sooner or later they disintegrate and the diff exits the bell housing. If you buy one look for one with an LSD in it which usually means they've put steel diff bearings in it. (I'll add you should install a power steering cooler and uprated rear gearbox mount before you can consider these cars reliable)
2. 5-speed. I live in Australia so things are long distances apart , sitting at 3000-3500rpm for 6 hours to go somewhere does your head in. Probably fine in UK.
3. This does not affect UK people I am sure, but these cars are very rare in Australia, they imported around 1000 of them and a fair few of those are written off or got parted after the diff bearings let go. Replacing the gearbox can cost almost as much as just buying a whole new car. The more that blow up the more expensive the gearboxes become. Things as simple as hoses etc have to be imported from the UK, spares cost a tonne. Every performance shop here in Aus supports every other ST but this one. The plus side is most people have never seen these cars before and there is some prestige to owning such a rare car. (which is why mine still has it's stripes)
4. Interior, after 6 hours with your elbow on hard plastic arm rest, no centre console, a cramped leg holding the throttle because no power steering, no foot rest for your other leg. Seating position to high. Average speakers. No blue tooth. The stability control is more likely to get you killed than save you, so you have to turn it off most the time.A lot of these is just because of the era some is because it is based on an econobox, some can be fixed or you get used to it.
5. They are slow.
Things I like are it handles better than most cars in my country. After a few mods they pop and bang like crazy, always turns heads as not many cars sound like that here. Rare car, unique looking. Although they are slow, add 30-40 HP, get the torque multipliers changed in the ecu and they are quite fun to drive.
3th to R works on mine too, rpm goin up and down is s common characteristic for this car. Its worst upon cold start when i need to warm it up a bit (i guess it needs some time to get gas to engine, or help it with gas pedal) or it goes up nad down in a range of 500rpm. Throttle body is common as well. Also a common issue is servo noise. I had to replace it and add an extra cooling circuit. Totally agree with seat handle, on passanger side its broken as well.. I saw ur suspension replacing, nice job. Im runing it on koni strt and eibach pro kit and its low, hard and perfect siting in turns. The front a little high is an optic effect i guess... Also great thing is powerflex silentblock on engine.
I had the same issue with my revs and then dropping when reversing etc. And if you stop and got out and tried to get back in sometimes it wouldn't start so I got the ecu updated and now works like a dream.
For The Ride I cleaned my throttle body and it helped a lot

does your car have a open cone filter? because mine did and had a idle problem then I bought the mountune air filter and it sorted it (mostly)
Recently picked up one of these, live in Australia so they are sold as the Fiesta XR4, and mine has the same issue when going into reverse, think it has been said on here before but instruction manual says to depress clutch for 3 seconds before shifting to reverse. The thing I love about it is the rawness to it. It just feels so connected to the road compared to newer cars with electronic steering and whatnot.

Can relate to this. My ST mk6 reverse gear crunches and I get the idle drop.
My biggest annoyance after buying it was the traction control (ESP) light coming on. Turned out it was the Yaw Rate Sensor. Which cost £800 to fix. And the piss weak alarm kept randomly going off. A software update cured that.

i had same problem with mine cutting out when reversin etc.throttle body got cleaned and not looked back hopefully thats all it is with yours

My fiesta crushes when going into reverse but only if i rev the engine just before depressing the clutch or if i go and immediately try to put it into reverse as i depress the clutch. It's because the clutch is still spinning after just disengaging from the flywheel, so you'll probably find that putting it into 3rd is slowing the gear box side of the clutch down first (i cant remember what it's called) and so it stops spinning just before you put it into reverse, if you depress the clutch then wait a couple of seconds, as long as the car is completely stationary it shouldn't crunch going into reverse.
I have all these things, Except with the reverse gear crunch I believe the previous owner never, Held the Clutch in for a few seconds, or put in 1st or 3rd, so the synchros feel a bit stuck sometimes. Also that feathering rev when idling or rolling as a pain in the arse on hills. But this car being tricky as it is, is great for teaching people how to drive... Any Car.

I just got an Astra H and a lot of the stuff you dislike about the Fiesta actually intrigues me! For example I am tiny so I need the seat at max height AND I have a seat cushion (one of those designed to help your posture) but I still can't see my bonnet and I shit myself every time I have to reverse up to anything. I would love the extra height of the Fiesta.
The other thing is the turning circle. It's one of the top things that has really bugged me so far about the Astra so it must be bloody awful on the Fiesta!
Oh and the seat handles seem kinda stiff (the passenger side definitely is) so I'm always scared of snapping them!

tip for the seat handle snapping, mate put a key ring in the mechanism so that he could pull that, and it would move the seat again
I agree with all your poi ts but what made be sell the car was I felt i was just to old for it at 26.....iv had a few car 14 now in total in 8 years ...a car that i had that i think you would like is the honda civic type r fn2 around 08 09 plate and i had a megane sport that was faster and more fun than the type r but when the type r red light comes on it sounds epic plus its like the astra in terms of the car hugs around you but only better than the astra which is what i have now .....nice videos 👍

My ST is basically identical to yours in terms of production date and even colour - the weird idle goes away for me when the engine is fully warmed up, but its really pronounced until the needle is bang in the middle of the gauge.
I got my gearbox re conditioned and used ATF and don't get a crunch in reverse also smoother.
My MK6 Ford Fiesta Finesse also decides when and where it wants to crunch into reverse

if anyone has the idle issue, go and watch a bloke called jaymono, he has the same problem except he taps the throttle, revs go up, goes down as normal, but then sticks at around 1.5 revs and then drops to normal, so the opposite to lee's. he has done a video on replacing the pcv hose and also the little vacuum behind the inlet manifold. this will sort the issue completely. quite common in these apparently but this should solve it.
Like others said about reverse: wait or try easy to release the clutch ( about a half ) while trying to get the stick in reverse.
Yeah my reverse is the same lol. Apparently you can clean the linkage out to get rid of it though

I find that another trick to the R gear crutch is to let it roll back or forth a little and it doesn't do it. Also Lee, I found the idle issue to go away when Pumaspeed Remapped it? Great Video lad.

Synchromesh on the reverse, you can also just put it into neutral, then into reverse and it stops the crunch. same deal on the ka's

my fiesta 1.6 Zetec S has that problem with reverse too and yeah them seat levers are terrible feels like you're right on the verge of snapping it lol

Both of my seat handles have snapped on my fiesta and had to attach cable ties to the actual cable to allow it to just about function lol
I know this is late but you gotta wait for a little bit for changing into reverse as the gear box has to settle which is why it probably goes away when u put it into third cuz you stop the gears most fords do it
In my opinion the seats are near perfect for 2005-2008 i sit really good in the fiesta
Dont forget the fiesta is a small car the weigth is just nothing for 150 HP(thats my opinion)

I have same problem with my 1.4i fiesta.
The turning circle is awful on my st150, I also get a crunch with my gear and scary enough I've also get a idle up and down. And I'm so with you, you do notice when driving. I don't mind my seat to much. Funny enough my rear seat clip has snapped and they are shit. Not a massive fan of lowering the car. It sticks to the mountain roads so well and is really hard to jump at speed. It really does love being driven hard in the Welsh mountains and valleys.
Reverse issue is in most fords even my old mk1 focus, 2&3&4 is an st only issue
Good video, may not look at the first 3 bad things until I get my zetec s that's if it's the same as an St. The thing which got me was that you don't like the full black look. The fog light surround, grill and rear diffuser are originally that plasticy grey colour and I was thinking of getting those painted gloss black when I get the car. Size wise the fiesta is 50cm longer than my car (Peugeot 107) so will be bigger although am slightly nervous when that time comes when I have to park in residential areas to get to uni as there have been times where my city car is able to park in small spots close to my uni. Overall will be very happy when I get my zetec s it will be a really big upgrade from my small cheap and unequipped car. All in all I'm sure you enjoy the car

itsLeeLockwood forgot to say but the seat release handles breaking are a common problem in the fiestas. Don't think I'll walk away if I see one with it broken
Hey Lee, just went today to look at a zetec s diesel. came with what i wanted which is the part leathers and electric mirrors, also came with factory tinted windows, auto lights and power folding mirrors. When i got there my dad noticed the rear quarter panel by the looks of it had been sprayed and the front wing also. my dad took it for a test drive and he kind of noticed it felt underpowered. he tried overtaking a cyclist in i think 3rd gear and there wasnt much torque to move it. there was several error codes aswell so in the end had to leave it. its had only 1 owner and 85k miles and i just think to myself they spend their money on a new car and on the extras and they messed it up. ive seen another one on ebay with a red dashboard but 121k miles although the thing which gets me is that they mountuned remapped it, HIDS, new clutch, waterpump, timing belt and a few other maintenance related changes which means the main things have been sorted out also it looks clean and looked after.
My feista crutches in reverse aswell and I hate it 😣😣and mine drops when it's idling or reversing aswell .. so bloody annoying

I just got this car. Two things I don't like: No foot rest next to the clutch! have to rest your foot on or behind clutch. And NO ARM REST. No middle storage space. GR

it does nothing to do with the 3rd gear. Simply, there is no synchronizer for the reverse gear, and all other gears have it . Same effect if you wait second or two for transmission to slow down (what you should do)

That'll be a belt mate. They need changing every 10 years or 100k miles so yours needs changing either way. Only the STs are chain driven, they only need changing when you can start to heat it tick. افغان Khan

Get a mk2 estate facelift and take a 2.5 litre turbo from a regular st in it, you’ll have a fast and comfy car, did it myself and it’s the best car I’ve ever driven🤟
Just bought an ST and i know what you mean, every one of those points were spot on.
Before this i had a BMW 3 series e46 coupe 2.2... The ST is quicker, but just doesn't feel as nice or as manly, definitely a toy in comparison.
Maybe look for a good 2.5/2.8/3L e46 coupe for your next one?
My annoyances are:
1. The only cup holder in the car is too close to the gear knob so large cups make it difficult or impossible to put it into first
2. Seat build quality (one seat cable snapped, the other seat the handle like yours snapped so doesn't work so passengers have to climb over the seats into the back)
3. Same as you, my gearbox crunches into reverse. Honestly thought it was a mechanical issue until recently
4. Missing sixth gear (at 70kph in 5th gear the car is at 2,000RPM and on the motorway it sits at 4,000RPM and is incredibly loud
5. My biggest issue is the fragile gear linkage. Three times it has come off making the gearbox useless. Had to drive home once stuck in first gear at 6,000 RPM just days after repairing the same issue. To be fair its incredibly easy to fix but still extremely annoying.
Really the build quality and oversights in the design are the biggest flaws in this car. That said, I absolutely love it. Its incredibly fun to drive, just feels so responsive, looks great and is cheap to buy, run and insure. Should be upgrading to the newer Mk7 ST sometime next year when I finish uni.
Anyone who drives a mk6 fiesta deserves a follow from me lol my first car was a mk6 fiesta pre-facelift. Loved it but it had the exact same problems as yours 😂 except mine was grey with silver alloys
You said that your Eibachs "snapped". How so?
I got one and I think the things that are missing from this car are a turbo & a 6 speed gearbox
you should 100% get a vxr. the astra are the best for a 10 year old car!! i have a red 1.6 astra atm with the exterior pack and defo getting a vxr soon gonna be the nuts!!!

VXR's are really overrated, And handle like bags of shit.

Lenny Thompson but its not in the small hot hatch class its in the catergory with the like of the focus st, golf gti, honda ep3 type r and audi s3, and all of them are just as quick and they all handle better than the astra as astra vxrs understeer, but they are quick ill give them that 👍
I've had major issue with the revs dropping on mine, mine would drop and then stall everytime i came to a stop and pressed the clutch down, thankfully only when cold, once the engine warmed it it was fine, never managed to find the what was causing it, to fix it i had to get a custom MAP that is stopping it from stalling, but is over fueling it the car, if anyone does know what the actual cause of it is, please let me know
TheD4N1EL I cleaned the throttle body and it helped loads!
I tried that, even replaced it with a bigger 60mm throttle body, and still had the problem :/
For the revving issue, id reccomend going to Fords and having an ECU / PCM update. This will sort out that issue. Make it smoother and in alot of cars poor starting. Hope this helps.

it's a great little hatch to learn to drive!
The steeringrack isn't full electronic, and also the pedals are still mechanical..both those things makes me say this, it's a great first sporty car to go for. Also the chassis and roadgoing are well balanced.
I'm actually thinking about buying one of these to give it to my stepdaughter when she got her license and then take her to the tracks with it.
I always loved these mk6's, had 3 of these actually and for the price...best buy ;-)

The seat release your supposed to use two hands one to release the clip one hand on head rest to pull seat forward it's not pull clip you will break it
Good video Lee. i had that shape ST before i upgraded to the newer model. 2 things what pissed me off too where the seat plastic handles as my driver side snapped too and reverse! used to always cut out. made me look like a tard who cant drive properly 😂

All I did was take off the earth from gear box and move and clean it will be fine will never happen again I promise I don't now why but it will work

clean the throttle body in that dont help replace the throttle body.... I ended up replacing mine and it was perfect .....mine was also mapped and all that ....
its because of the spark plug lead apparently why the car does that..

1. The crunch is so damn annoying! Especially when you're doing a 3 point turn and a car comes and you're sitting sideways like a lemon tryna get it in reserve. My first car (mk1 focus 1.8) had the exact same as well, must be a ford thing 😂
2. I always thought the turning circle was gash, didn't know the normal fiesta had a better turning circle though!
3. I have idle issues and I'm running a completely standard ST, going to start modifying it soon, but I get it a lot when trying to squeeze into tight gaps when parking, the revs keep dropping so it bogs down the car and then usually cuts out.. frustrating.
4. Can't really say much about the seating position, one thing I will say however is the drivers side pillar is an absolute pain in the ass for blind spots, might be affected with how high the seats sit.
5. Size of the car to me, is fine as I've only had one previous vehicle to the ST so I can't compare to say, in your example, VXR/Subaru
Honourable mentions:
The shitty seat handles - I snapped my drivers side handle clean off and had to replace it, figured out it was the seat not sitting in the railings properly so whenever you're moving the chair back and forth make sure you really give it a click.

Max Bush I think it sorts out the crunch when going into gear. That's what I've heard. I've also recently got a zetec s which the owner said he did the clutch and im sure I don't hear it crunch but I'm just driving it from the driveway into my garage in the back so not completely certain
Ah okay, wasn't to sure which point you were aiming it at. I only notice the car crunches into reserve when it's cold and first started up, as the revs are high if you hold the clutch in for 5-6 seconds it'll lower the revs and should just go into reserve smoothly anyway.
I hope you go back to Astra H, maybe :D

The rev fluctuation happens with all Mk6 Fiesta ST's. Clean the throttle body (Or change it for a 60mm) and put an extra earth wire from the engine lift eye to the top of the OS suspension turret. Should stop it for the most part.
And the ST has to be small, it's all about the back road corners. My Focus ST (276bhp) I have now would never keep up with my old Fez on proper windy back roads.
