Relocating the Power Steering PAS Reservoir on my Fiesta ST150 *CHEAP* *DIY*

  • In this video I'm relocating the power assisted steering (PAS) reservoir on my Fiesta. A common problem with these cars is that the power steering fluid overheats and basically cooks and begins to break down. Eventually the pump will start to whine and ultimately fail. A common mod is to relocate the reservoir to a cooler part of the engine bay and running the lines behind the grill helps cool the fluid as its pushed round the system. There are kits available to do this but they can be quite expensive so I've gone down the DIY route to show you how you can do this mod a little bit cheaper. It also makes bit more room up front for future mods which are coming very soon!
    I picked up my new reservoir second hand but you can easily find them on eBay if you search for a Transit Connect or Focus Mk1 PAS reservoir.
    You can find the hose I purchased here:
    www.ebay.co.uk... - I ordered 16mm I/D and 10mm I/D, 2 meters of each.
    You can find the pump adaptor I purchased here:

    Nice :) I have all the bits to do the same DIY setup as you except there’s a massive steering oil cooler to run through up the front of the car as well, over the Australian summer the fluid never gets a chance to “cool” so boiling it and having it spew all over the engine bay is a fact of life.
    Also there’s a foam filter built in the old reservoir that’s supposed to clean the fluid as it flows back in. This also clogs up causing more dramas. It’s moulded in place, would be interesting if you cut it out and have a look. The reservoir you’ve used has a screen type filter on the return and it can be cleaned by filling with degreaser and brushed down gently via the filler neck.
    The Ford spec fluid these days can be replaced by a “Mercon LV” auto transmission fluid which is way cheaper to buy as a 4L bottle when the time comes to flush the system completely. Yes 4L is way more than needed but it would be worse to not have enough.

    • @MendItModIt
      @MendItModIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh wow I can imagine it’s way worse with he temperatures you get! Ah I yes I saw the filter, someone on Facebook mentioned putting a filter in-line and I completely forgot about the one in the new reservoir! I did give it a clean before I fitted it but thank you for reminding me 🙏🏻 I’m wondering if I could upgrade it again in the future with a cooler, would also be cool if I could find a way to monitor the temperature. Oh okay yeah that sounds much better, I’ll have a look into that stuff, thank you 😁👍🏻

      The newer Reservoir was filled with some sludge, I'm thinking the dark red fluid was a problem, lord knows what they were using?? Probably never changed. The filter seems clogged partly, will degrease and brush gently. The in line filter seems a bit over kill, I'm doing this so I can never worry about changing the fluid again not finding another serviceable part to worry about. 😅😅 I got some hose sleeves that expanded with heat to help any chaffing on the body work. Got the kit for £90 that's with some motul multi ATF. The only thing is the pump is normally gravity feed the fluid, now it has to pump a lot harder.

    • @MendItModIt
      @MendItModIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CdotPoppy I wondered if the pump would struggle with the reservoir being further away but I guess the off-the-shelf kits are tried and tested so 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Anyone knows where to find this adaptor in Europe? Great video mate, very informative.

  • @jimbo4375
    @jimbo4375 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Going to do this and will probably do it your way as the kits are a lot of money for some hoses and a bottle. It's only really the adapter that's the 'clever' bit. I have a cooler by the rad as well so will have to add that into the route. Is that hose suitable for ATF fluid long term? I have had a cooler on for a few years and the fluid has worked it's way though a few of them, even the fuel hose.

  • @lunch2102
    @lunch2102 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    2:03 consider that these kits are only available from the UK so if you own an st150 in Australia, you're up for postage + import tariffs on top..

    • @MendItModIt
      @MendItModIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Happy days then if you can get all the bits, they should be fairly universal, unlike the kits apparently 😨 The ST150 has a different name in Australia right?

    Great video, not just for DIY but also it can be a tutorial for the kit as well. What was the clearance from the top of the new reservoir bottle to the bonnet?

    • @MendItModIt
      @MendItModIt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you buddy 👍🏻 there’s a lot more room than you’d think. After I mounted it I thought it was a bit high but I checked and the bonnet didn’t touch. It was a bit of trial and error cause originally I had it too low and although the reservoir fit there was a bracket stopping me getting the hoses on. I raised it enough to sort that out and that’s how it sits now and clearance is fine. Trying to mark the holes with the tray in and holding the reservoir in is a bit of a pain but I got there 😂

    • @TheKittyRanch
      @TheKittyRanch 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made a bracket for mine yesterday and set the height so the collar of the reservoir was above the natural path of the windscreen washer lines. It would have about 6-10mm clearance at that point. I’ve seen some people put the mounting tab right against the lip of the battery box, on mine that’d work, just, but knowing my luck it’d rattle on the bonnet.
