    Hi Matt, a couple of hints that may help. Put a blanket on the tank, the bars invariably drop down at some stage. Try using compressed air to get the old grip off.

    Hi, Matt. I went to KTM today and asked about the 2023 390 Adv. I'm ready to buy! No news on specs. He called his rep and found out it will probably be Feb or March before they arrive. I want to see if there are any big changes, so I will wait. I just want to be ready for spring/summer. Until then, I'll keep watching your channel 🏍

      Seems like the seat is a bit better and it comes with flat pegs rather than the Dukes street style ones now. Same engine and specs from what I have seen.

    Great install Matt. I will certainly look at this install again when I order bars.
    According to Amazon I installed the ODI Rogue grips in March of 21. I found the KTM grips firm and "plasticky." I liked the ODI grips so much on my 390, that Installed a set on my Honda. - Frank

      What did you do with the tabs on the throttle tube that lock the grip in place? It looks like these have to be removed.

      @@advmatt I looked for my Dremel, realized I loaned to someone, then used a grinder. Took just a moment. I am baffled as to why the tabs exist, but then I am also baffled by the bike having non standard sized bars as well. - Frank

      @@OneOldManRiding Thanks, that is what I am planning to do when I install heated grips or maybe the heating elements under the grips.

    • @OneOldManRiding
      @OneOldManRiding 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@advmatt I use heated gloves because I like a comfortable grip. I have not held a heated grip I wanted to use year-round. I saw the heating elements on the Swanky Cat channel, and I will probably install a set this fall. They seem to be a good compromise. Not as warm as true heated grips but will allow me to run my grip of choice. - Frank

    The stock bars are a weird size and I found that bark busters make a model specific hand guard that bolts directly onto the 390 (and the Himalayan with included hardware). Great video, I have reached the point where I need to replace my bar as well. The video is very informative, thanks for making content that is specific to the 390!

    • @gungravered
      @gungravered 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just installed the Tusk Hanguards from Rocky Mountain. You need to drill out the insert in the stock bars with a 9/16th drill bit. After that you can install most handguards

    Good choice, and you're definitely on the right track for offroad ergos. That's going to be a much more powerful upper body posture standing or sitting. The single biggest mistake I see people make with big bikes is doing the opposite of what you're doing when setting up ergos.

    Hey Matt, great video!
    My question is a bit off-topic but I hope you can point me in the right direction. As a long distance KTM 390 Adventure rider, have you thought of adding cruise control? Are you aware of any options you can recommend? Thanks!

    • @advmatt

      Thanks. I use the Atlas Throttle. It works pretty well. I dont know if electronic cruise control can be added to the 390. I suspect it cant.

  • @CraigDeats

    Thanks for the video Matt. I'm looking at doing something very similar on mine to get the bars more forward. You used the same risers again didn't you? How does this setup compare in overall bar height to your stock bar and riser combo you were running before?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did use the same risers, but I could have gone a little taller. The bars feel like, I haven't measured, they are slightly lower. Only observation after a few 100 miles offroad. Since I have plenty of clutch cable slack I might go with a little taller riser, but need more miles to see. They are way more comfortable and better positioned. Hope this helps.

      @@advmatt Thanks... I've been struggling with the same issue of the bars being too far back for standing and even a bit cramped just running pavement. Running the stock bars and 22mm risers. After a 650 mile weekend of 50/50 road/dirt I've decided I need to do something with the bars and your solution seems like it might just do the trick. Thanks again!

      @@advmatt Another quick question for you... I ended up ordering the Windham/RM Mid bars...slightly more rise and slightly more sweep. It looks like there won't be enough room for the throttle side controls (same specs as your bars)...putting the brake/mirror clamp on the bend a bit. Did you experience that? Wasn't able to tell 100% from your video. THX...

    Hi Matt thx for the content. Have been watching your vids and just dumped my F800gs and bought a new '22 390. I want to switch out my handlebars to get more "cockpit space" (I'm 6'1"). I'd like to keep the 1" mount (instead of going to 1 1/8) and go from the ~19 degrees to the ~15 degrees as you mentioned. Any recommendation where I can go to get the bars?

    • @advmatt

    Caution: the bar clamp mounts may have worked well for you, but the ones I got were wrong. Very wrong. I exchanged them and the second set was worse. I have everything else done and I cannot finish the swap until I find a bar clamp that works. Thoughts?

      @@advmatt No worries, I think I have a solution. I have parts coming Thursday from Mojo Moto and should know by Friday if they work. This is a great reminder as to how much of a PITA fitment can be. I successfully ordered clamps designed to convert from 1' to big bars from Best Dual Sport Bikes, but got an email the next day saying they were out of stock and hadn't a clue as to when they would have more. Thanks for the reply, I hope the riding is excellent where you are.

    Nice mod, I did a similar mod to my G310GS it put the bars up a bit and put my elbows out also. It's a much better fit for off road. Quick question what does the switch gear do

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The switch gear is for the blinkers, the high/low beams and on a KTM it scrolls through the menus on the dash. I should have done this a long time ago.

      I thought it was worth it, but you can always get bars with more sweep. The upgrade to the thicker bar is absolutely worth it.

      @@advmattthanks. Man this has been a frustrating process for me. Should have been a simple process but I messed up from the beginning. Anyhow I finally got the new bars in and put them on. They feel great but they sit pretty low and there is lots of cable and wire slack, especially putting pressure on the break line. What height are the bar clamps? I ordered what you had linked but they seem lower than what you put on. This actually all started because I purchased a universal fit Acerbis hand guards. Well they don’t fit without the levers running into the inside of the guards. I want the guard to be around the lever. Anyhow, simple upgrade costing me more cash than should and I’m frustrated by my dumb mistakes. I’ll keep buying more parts until it’s right. Lol. 😅 thanks for your content though. Great stuff!

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nathanwerner8288 I kept the bar risers I installed earlier in with the clamps. The bar risers were 20mm, I think. You might consider cutting the end of your levers off so that they fit in the handguards. One inch off the end will do it. That's what I did with my Tuareg. I only use two fingers so I don't need long levers. You can always buy shorty levers too. Good luck getting it sorted out.

      @@advmatt Got it all sorted out. One thing I noticed is the full stop from right to left is different. Full left hits my windshield and full right does not. When I really dug into it, its not any of my set up but actually a manufacture issue. Not sure if you have ever run into this before. But I do really like the new forward and higher bars for sure. Way better to stand up with and better control of the bikes weight. Thanks for all you put out there!

    Hey Matt, what kind of glue did you use when you installed the left (clutch side) grip?

    • @advmatt

      I used super glue I had in the house. It held great but when I went to install the heated grips it was a pain to remove. I had to cut them off. With that being said. the glue held them in place really well. I think it was the Gorilla brand super glue.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My wrist is still on the mend, but fully functional. Thanks. As for breaking in your bike. Keep the RPMs below 6500 - 7000 in the first 1k and during acceleration keep it conservative. Basically don't try to go as fast possible from a standstill. Make sure to vary the RPMs over the first 1k. I was told there was a heating period for the first few starts but I don't think that applies to modern bikes. The most important thing to do is change the oil and filters at 1k. After that you are good to go. This is just my opinion on breaking in this bike and what I did.
