  • In this video I discuss the top five things I hate about this bike. After riding 20,000 miles on this bike I think I know it pretty well, and there are clearly some areas where this bike could be improved. See if you agree with me and if you have the same issues or any questions.

    IMO, it takes a certain type of mindset or experience to appreciate the 390. I'm only at the 600mi mark on mine (bought a 22 a month ago - thankfully the controls on that solve the off-road/on-road mode swapping when stalled). I'm coming down from an 800cc, simply because I've been riding around off-road for the past 5 years alternating between a 125 2-stroke and a 250 4-stroke dirt bike. Having 3 bikes in the garage was starting to get a bit much, so selling my 800 and 250 for the 390 made sense for the purposes of what I wanted out of an ADV bike (road usage + lighter off-road for my friends that don't want to do Enduro-style off-road). Is there anything else that you can whip around as easily as the 390 ADV? CRF300 or KLX300, sure, but you're taking a compromise on your ability to cruise adequately on the highway for when you need to. DRZ400? Great, if not amazing bike but if a criticism of the 390 ADV is the amount of modding you need to do; DRZ400S or SM is going to require a bunch of modding to get it out of its caveman territory as well. Tenere/790 ADV/any of the BMWs and you're swinging a boulder around tighter single track stuff which feels like crap if you've ever done trails on even a 400, which I don't think most people have - I think the 125 2-stroke or 250f is the more likely scenario. Is the 390 ADV a compromise? 100% - but so is everything else, so make the most of what you've got and ride it within its limitations. When I win the lottery and have a 3 car garage, maybe I'll invest in having "every bike" for "every scenario". Until then, 390 ADV it is 😎

      I totally agree, at least the 22 version has added stronger upgraded alloy wheels and an off road mode that stays on even if the bike is stalled, so KTM are listening, I love my 22 bike, it is light enough for me to feel confident off road, and powerful enough to go travelling on.

    Fair points, the only one I borderline disagree with is the suspension.
    Being a longtime owner of Japanese bikes (I own two of them along with my 390 at this time,) the WP suspension on the 390 is significantly better than what the Japanese bikes ship with.
    When riding the 390 on the road, or on dirt and gravel roads, I found the suspension quite good.
    Once I started on trails, I did find that I bottomed out the front and it made sense to upgrade the springs. (💰💰)
    The rear would not bottom out on me even on rough offroad. I only felt the need to replace the rear shock (💰💰💰💰💰) when I started loading the bike with camping gear for multiple days. At that point I was just crushing my spring. I think that if you are not Motocamping with the bike, the rear shock is quite good.
    And finally, KTM deserves credit for providing suspension that's adjustable on a $6400 bike. That's unheard of in this day and age. Modern Japanese bikes come with very limited adjustments, and sprung for 160# riders! IMHO, KTM did much better, and at a great price. - Frank

      ADV Matt-don’t let the haters dissuade you from your amazing adventures on the 390. As a Tenere owner, I purchased a 390 for commuting. As it turned out, it’s helluva fun, and I find myself using the 390 as a dual sport and relegated the T7 to touring duty. In my own experience, I realized I can ride whatever bike I want for whatever use I want, as long as I recognize each bikes’ limitations and my skill level.
      I love your videos and you have inspired me to customize my 390 to do similar type of riding. People are funny.

    The suspension is the biggest weakness for sure. I have heavier duty springs both front and rear. I don't bottom out any more. The ergos required swapping out the stock seat for the rally one, foot pegs replaced with black dogs and handle bar risers solved that issue. EVERY bike needs to be modded. I purchased this bike Feb 2022 after watching your videos late 2021 into 2022. Reviews of the BMW, RE, and other similar classed bikes have been extreme. Your DTE approach made the decision easy.
    Point: I hit 1,000 miles last week, 90% of it off road: Arizona rocky trails, dirt roads, Mojave CA sand and rocky roads.
    This bike, so far, has been Fn awesome. Keeping up with the bigger KLRs, GS 1250s, 890s, etc had been a blast and surprising to other Big Bike riders. I have my gripes, which are SUPER simple to adjust... but still SAVED me $thousands$ from buying a bike I didn't want, with things I didn't need. All that savings allows me to afford things I want. @islanboi

    I have definitely noticed a legit bias in youtube reviews for the 390 ADV. Fortnine's was confusing because be spent the majorty of the review speaking well of it and making it look fun as hell, then waited till the concluding sentence to dog it. Dork in the road dogged it for not being great offroad without actually taking it off road. So I dont know. Like you, I do find myself being defensive about it because if seems like it does get extra critical reviews for whatever reason. Having said that, actual owner reviews are very positive and at the end of the day that's all that counts. I love mine. Love your videos, pleas keep them coming!

    A newbie 390 adv owner here. Adventure bikes are the most controversial bikes you can buy. They tend to be more road or more off-road usage. This 390 is the younger brother of 890 adventure S version, not R.

    My primary bike is a GS but, as you know, it can be a handful. So I wanted something more trail oriented and, frankly, easier to pick up off the ground. I added a Honda CRF300L to the garage. I’ve changed the handlebars, added risers, changed the foot pegs, upgraded the suspension, replaced the seat…and I’m not sure I’m done. I guess that happens when you buy the budget bike in the lineup. So we are kind of in the same boat. But my bike makes me smile! 👍

    It may not be the unicorn for all people but for the ability the value and the quality also and riding it the way it was designed to be ridden there is none better at this time in my opinion. I believe you have been having problems with your suspension simply because you have it caring much more weight than it’s designed to, I rode the entire continental divide trail , and regarding the suspension the one thing that stands out is the hundreds of miles of washboard roads that were a real aggravation. I really believe when choosing a motorcycle you must buy one that fits you and that you fit, I’m 5 foot eight and 150 pounds. For me this has been one of the best motorcycles I have ever owned, until the next one.

    ;)
    I love my KTM 390 Adv. I'm giving my son the Himalayan and keeping the KTM. I sat on a BMW 310 and that was enough.
    I just had my first service ... erm a wee bit late at ~1800 mi and the tech knew nothing about a firmware update that included the mtc. Yeah, you ARE rough on that bike, but man ain't it a fun bike? I'm 6'-0" so the only thing I want to change are maybe the pegs that lower the height about an inch, the risers that raise the bar ~¾" and a more comfortable seat. Where I live, you need to hit the highway to get to the good stuff.
    Ride that mutha 'til falls apart Matt. You picked a good'un!

Wonder if the "R" comes out if it will still catch flack. probably. it's the baby in the series. The baby always catches the flack, because you could have gone upmarket. If it gets you where you're going, and you feel comfortable riding the trails you ride, that's sort of all that matters.

    No bike in the market is perfect especially in India. In order to make this bike a dual purpose one I have modified it to fit to my purpose. Unfortunately in India there are no competitors for this bike at its price point of 5000$.
    I own adventure 390 2022 model in this new model the Traction control doesn't reset like in older model's when switched to off road mode. Here in India the old models got an ecu update as well getting off road mode where traction control doesn't reset when bike stops.
    I used fork lifters & added extra spring to the stock eventually got 270mm of Ground clearance.
    Used 2 inch risers & changed my handle bar with a cross bar
    Unfortunately here in India we don't get the adjustable suspension for adventure 390 instead we get road biased stiff suspension which is a bummer. Got quick shifter with auto blipper in stock bike
    I don't like the low end torque delivery of this bike so i used fuel x pro fuel mapper 80℅ of the low end torque is solved without effecting the top speed. Must have upgrade in my opinion 👌
    Used powertronic ecu for the extra 2000 rpm unlock
    Using the cast wheels for 4k kms & done wheelies & hardcore offroad but doesn't have any problems so far.
    Planning to do a full system exhaust mod but after seeing you removing the resonator I came to know that will serve my purpose of getting that extra sound.
    I hope it didn't damage your engine so far 🤔.
    I dropped my idea of getting full system mod as it's too complex & risky on engine life.

    I have an early 2020 with the stick cast wheels. Only changed the pegs and added risers. Love the bike, but then again, I Live in Germany, where Off-Road is a Myth since all the forests are for hiking only! Occasionally I travel to Sweden and enjoy some Gravel Roads, or down South of Europe (planned) where I will also enjoy some gravel roads! So for my use case, this bike is pretty much perfect.
    Why I chose this bike: I can only have 1 bike right now, and I had a limited budget when I bought it. So this fits well in the one bike that does it all category, but without compromising on-road performance! I look at it as a more comfortable Duke, that is capable of some light off-road! so exactly what the Marketing department of KTM was thinking as well.

    Love mine but as you mentioned they’re not best under 4k rpm partly due to lean emissions restricted fuelling. I found this can be much improved by fitting a Rapidbike Easy module which modifies the lambda sensor signal to fool the ecu into running a little richer in closed loop mode. Low rpm running is much more settled, and throttle control more mellow and predictable, better suited to some of the technical riding you face. Powertronic Fuel x modules work on the same principle and are also well reviewed. Recommend this mod as an inexpensive method of making the bike run much better at low revs without any noticeable downsides.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Before commenting I want to state that I have done some, but not a lot, of research on ECU fuel modules. From the research I did it appears the fuel controllers require the removal of the stock header for a new one without catalytic converters. If I am wrong please correct me. If you remove catalytic converters you have to keep the resonator to maintain proper back pressure for the low RPM torque. I don't want to re-install something that put a tremendous amount of heat stress on my shock, which is why I have stayed away from fuel tuners. I don't have direct experience with the fuel controllers, but that is what I found in my research. I will look into the Rapidbike Easy module to see what the installation requires. I haven't found the engine to be problematic offroad. I adjusted how I ride and keep the engine RPMs up and use the clutch a bit more or a lower gear than I would have before. I am not the best rider and I don't ride extreme terrain like many of you out there where you might want lower rpm grunt. Thanks for the tip.

    • @wrf277
      @wrf277 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Matt, these work more as fuel tweakers than controllers, the Rapidbike Easy module only intercepts and modifies the signal from the lambda sensor on its way to the ECU. This signal is used by the ECU to make final fuel trim adjustments to achieve the target 14.7:1 ratio during closed loop mode, which I have found later generation bikes like ours operate in most of the time during normal riding. What I like about this type of module is that everything still works as originally designed, but fuelling is aimed at something closer to 14:1 ratio which just makes them run nicer.
      You can leave your catalytic converters in place, it will work with or without them as the lambda sensor is upstream of these so any resulting change in mixture caused by whatever modification will be detected by the lambda, modified slightly by the RB module, then acted upon by the ECU to trim the fuelling back to what it believes is an air fuel ratio of 14.7:1. When the engine is worked hard with wide open throttle at high revs the ECU switches to open loop mode, and the lambda sensor signal isnt used so this module makes no difference to top end performance which is fine by me.
      Installation is easy, the unit simply plugs in series with the Lambda sensor using the connectors just behind where the ignition coil sits. I identified three units that work in the same way, The RB Easy, Powertronic fuel x and the AF-Xied which should all give very similar results. As you say this isnt a major issue on the 390 and its not too difficult to ride around it, but its really nice not having to. I’ve ridden mine in stock trim for a couple of years without it bugging me too much but found myself researching it a bit during these cold winter months. A good comparative test is to try to hold the revs at a steady 2500rpm in neutral, mine had a tendency to be unsteady either dropping back to tickover or surging slightly to 3000rpm where it was happier, but that little extra fuel helps it settle down to be much more controllable at any chosen rpm. Three richer settings can be selected on the RB Easy, which can be seen to make a measurable difference by comparing fuel trim values in back to back tests, but I run mine on +1 as that seems to provide the right balance between a smoother running engine and increased fuel consumption for me.

    I don't even know how I got here, well I sort of know how. I live and ride in Asia, I have two 150 cc Hondas, an air cooled, 5 speed no hp CFR and my new 150 cc, water cooled, 6 speed, looking like a million bucks CB150X, still very little hp. The big bike is the new Rally, here it's still only 250, license, tax.........Last year I did 3000 miles, adventure ride in eastern Europe. I was on the 800 GS, my friend on his almost classic by now GS1150. At first the 800 was terrifying, then it became less but it was always too tall, too heavy, just too much. Few times when "lost" on epic trails, we had to turn around (not easy with these beasts) because our 50 years old brains were telling us that it was no longer smart or fun to continue. We both were dreaming of something light.
    I am so sick and tired of most everyone referring to these bikes as beginner bikes, complaining about 42 hp!!!!!! Different environment here but, I have more fun on the 12hp CRF then the Rally in dirt. So here I am, looking to buy my own bike in Europe, I thought the Rally 300 was it, now this KTM is looking like a potential target. Truth is, I am more road oriented rider, I stay off high ways religiously, I functionally prefer cast/tubeless wheels (although emotionally love spoke wheels), again emotionally want more ground clearance, but I would need that during 5% of my riding.....Just like the rest of us I sorta know what I need but my emotions tell me otherwise, no wonder that the "perfect" bike does not exist.
    KTM, strange that I am looking at it, the reliability question is nagging me. The "racer" boy electronics I could also do without. Last fear is in becoming a member of the "ready to race" cult, same as the "life style" or GS cult. Somehow I am starting to look away from the "nicest people ride Hondas" camp and possibly take a dive into the KTM world. Interesting turn of events, thx for a nice vid.

    I like your talks 😁 Frank+funny.
    And I feel your pain 😆 I think there is a deeper root somewhere. Something is in the way of creating good all around general purpose bikes. There's too many models, too much inattention to detail. It's as if mfrs never bother test riding their own bikes, and just sit around on PCs designing new looks to come out of their assembly lines. I mean, the ADV market is over 40 years old now. They ought to have attained perfection at reasonable costs by now. There's something wrong with the business models or something.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have heard one of the reasons manufacturers don't build the perfect bike is two fold, one it would cost a fortune, and the aftermarket industry is huge. They don't want to damage it making perfect bikes. That was a quote I heard from someone who worked for Honda North America.

      A common thought is, "why does the Black Dog plate waste space when they could make it closer to the engine". They probably could, but then it would be attached to the engine like so many other bash plates. If you hit the plate hard, the others could crack your crankcase. The BD plate is mounted completely free from touching the engine.

    Matt, I like your efforts in making these videos and things you done to the bike. But, If you ride a bike outside it's design limits or ones capabilty, you allways feel a need for upgrades. The way I ride (mild dirt or gravel roads and tarmac) the bike suits me better than any other bike I owned in the past 20 years. But I guess owning a bike is as personal as it gets. Right now I'm tweaking the bike to be an excellent adventuretouring bike with the ability to go on a solo muli-day campingtrip. On every single bike I owned I upgraded the suspension and exhaustsystem. It made the bike feel different and in some cases improved the bike. But right now I don't feel the need to change this on my bike. The adjustable suspension is more than adequate for my needs. I don't see the need for spoked wheels. I like the fact that I don't have to hussle with innertubes, which I had to do on my 990 adventure. And the combination of a low ground clearance and a higher seating position makes the ideal small bike with more than enough space for my long legs. The only real upgrade I did after I bought the bike was fitting the powerparts risers. This makes standing better and seems to give a bit more control when cornering. The MTC-issues have been solved in the 2022 version which I have and word goes that older bikes can be upgraded with the new firmware. I'm looking forward to your next video! 😀

Many causes have been mentioned but nobody has totally hit on what the real fix is. Things that were mentioned include crimped fuel hose, low fuel pressure on fuel pump, defective micro switch on clutch lever, updated firmware needed, yada yada yada. Did you ever experience any of the stalling or other drivability issues in the first few hundred miles? If so what was your solution to remedy problem. the strong vibration feels on my hand and feet after the long-ride is what I don't like about my 390. if there is a solution pls let me know. wearing thicker riding shoes and gloves perhaps might solve this?

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I am not sure what to tell you. I have seen some inserts into the handlebars that are supposed to reduce vibrations, but I haven't tried them yet. As for your feet, maybe try the SW-Motech footpegs with rubber inserts. It should help.

    I love my '21 390, but I've had a persistent oil leak around the front sprocket. My dealership keeps telling me that it's chain lube and I had a look but couldn't see anything. Runs fine and the oil level seems good, so I don't really know what to do.

    • @michaelsimonds7112
      @michaelsimonds7112 ปีที่แล้ว

      Clean around the area and then run the bike on the stand and see if any oil comes out, you might be able to remove the chain lube from the equation that way

    • @OGCaptCrunch
      @OGCaptCrunch ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@michaelsimonds7112 Definitely know that it's oil now. I took it to the dealer and they agreed, but they have a 1 week wait. They also said they need to hold on to the bike because their service schedule is weird. Said it might be a crank shaft seal or something to that effect. I guess I'll find out next week, maybe.

    390 adv is my first motorcycle. I hate the engine, it's jerky on low rpms, like 3000 rpms unusable while >5000 produce a lot of vibrations. I have to shift often. I tried to ride a Ninja 250 and it has a better engine.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  ปีที่แล้ว

      I like this engine, but has to be ridden at 4k rpms or higher. Between 5k and 7k it is the smoothest. I like the vibes I get from this bike, but I also wring it out and keep the rpms high. It's all a preference.

    I generally agree, with one exception. The front forks are nowhere near good enough.They feel that there is nowhere near any progression
    and feel cheap.
    And the looks of course: by far the ugliest bike in production.
    Apart from that, on the road, quite good vfm.🙂

    It seems like it won't matter what bike you have you will hate some things about. It really does seem like you have the wrong bike .I just sold my 2016 Africa twin ..why ? It was to damn heavy . Any way I bought the 2022 390 ADV .It doesn't the auto traction reset feature which is nice but it still all the issue's you complained about ... perhaps the 2022 cast wheels are stronger we will see .But I knew that when bought it.You should have bought the suzuki DRZ 400 . The only thing I did to mine was add a steering damper which was a pain in the ass because I had to make my own frame attachment point.

    • @advmatt
      @advmatt  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not a chance. I had a KLR long ago and I hated it. The five speed transmission was awful for highway speeds. After owning that bike for nine months I sold it and quit riding for years. My experience on it was really unpleasant. I couldnt afford a better bike at the time. The 390 Adv is a better bike in every aspect from my experience.

    I thought KTM is allowing the MY2020 & 2021 390 ADV to have software updated (for free) to include street & off-road modes? The off-road mode would allow MTC to be permanently turned off. This feature is already available in the 2022 model.

    You’re ergo complaint is simply customising to your size, you can’t ‘hate’ that you need to change the handlebar location, everyone is different. KTM have a bashplate, maybe the aftermarket one you chose was poorly designed and uses more clearance. You should point out the MY bike you have as most things are possibly no longer issues with later models, the TC for example 🤷‍♂️
