Good and honest review Matt, thanks man. I took a demo ride on a 390 about three weeks ago and was blown away by it! I have three bikes at the moment, Kwak ZX9R Sports Bike, XT660Z Tenere for Adventure and the new Honda 125 Monkey Bike for Smiles and throwing in the back of my camper van for adventures. After that demo ride on the 390, I think the ZX9R will be moving on and being replaced by the KTM. I’ve been interested in a smaller capacity adventure bike to sit alongside my beloved Tenere for sometime now and I think I’ve found what I need in the KTM 390. It’s ideal for the shorter, more localised, weekend way type adventures and will make a superb commute bike, being so light and flick-able. Slightly off topic, but I really like that Tusk tank bag you have mounted up. I’m in the UK and I’ve searched and searched for one here, but it seems there are zero stockists over here? Did you consider the KTM 690 and 790 before decided on the 390? How does the 390 perform on the highway with other speeding traffic, heavy cross wind and comfort? Thanks!
I briefly considered the both the the 690 and 790. I did a video explaining my decision. It was last fall if you want to see all of my decision making. @@advmatt thank you for your reply! You have pretty much convinced me about the 390. Looking forward to watch your new adventure; especially, with the 390. Thanks again for everything!
Superb video, Matt! I recently bought this bike and I haven't finished the break in period so I found this video just in time as I'm gearing up to take it off road soon. There were some reservations when I first bought it but since I'm new to offroading, I think this will work out very well. I feel the bike definitely not going to be a limitation after watching this video - thank you! Quick question - have you done anything to help with the lack of bottom end grunt? I'm considering changing the rear sprocket but I'm not fully sold on it just yet. Appreciate your thoughts!
I have not changed the gearing and probably wont. I think it has a good compromise for both onroad and offroad. As long as i kept the RPMs up it did everything I asked of it, which included really steep ascents in Colorado. Maybe ride a bit more and adjust how you ride this bike compared to others.
boosterplug.com there are plenty of install videos and reveiws on YT ! Added to the sprocket change you will definitely notice improved power plus you can add the open type airbox lid plus a more free flow type exhaust if you want ( More hp ) up from 44hp to 46/47hp maybe more but from the research I have been doing it is the cheapest most effective modification for better cooler low end lugging without stalling!
Hi, When you adjust the forks and reference clicks from open do you mean fully counter clock wise towards the - or fully clock wise towards the + ? Thanks! Great video!
I really like the TKC70 front tire and have the TKC70 Rocks on the rear. On the road they are fantastic. Offroad they have performed way better than I expected. The only time the front tries to wash out is when the road has a lot of silt or really deep gravel. Rear is amazing, digs and grabs.
We ll said about the "proper" application of the bike. I notice you have added a wind deflector to the GIvi screen - is that something you use in all situations now or just for particular purposes?
@@FrankJCone I also noticed that the MRA Touring screens typically come with a deflector as well. I seem to remember @ADVMatt commenting in his video on the screen that he didn't go for the taller screen at the time as he felt it could get in the way when off road (could be wrong here).
I added the extension to get the wind over my helmet at highway speeds. Because I have a camera on one side and communications on the other the wind noise is really loud. For extended offroad riding I pull off the deflector. I cant recommend this deflector because I had to modify it. The plastic retaining clips did not hold at speed and I had to install bolts and nuts to secure it in place. It is a bit of a hack job. If I didnt have stuff hanging off my helmet I wouldn't have installed it.
I'm curious as to how you decided on the 390 over other bikes like the CRF 300L or DR650? I'm a novice rider looking at getting back into the sport after 40 years, I rode off road a lot as a teenager. I'm now 58 years old, have a small build 5'7" tall, 32 inch inseam and weigh 140 lbs, so a lower seat height and lighter weight bike is important. I plan on doing about 50% pavement, 40% twin track and 10% single track, a long as some multi day trips. I would love your recommendation on a bike, what's your thoughts on how it compares to the CRF300 Rally and DR650 vs the 390 for me? Thanks in advance.
Hey JC, I did a video discussing all the issues that are of interest to you. Here is the link th-cam.com/video/N6K0KmujefE/w-d-xo.html hope this helps.
Matt, I really like the 390 Adventure and would like to purchase one to do a BDR. But I am super concerned about reliability. How has your MC been -do you trust it? Also, do you have any problems keeping the revs up to go up and over mountain passes?
I totally trust my 390 Adv. I have ridden most of the CABDR on it and some of the Colorado Alpine passes. I have never had an issue with lack of power offroad. If you watch my video, "When everything goes wrong", you will see some pretty challenging terrain where I took the 390 Adv. Only issue I have is a blown rear shock at 10k miles. Those were hard miles. I do long distance travel and lots of offroad travel. It has been a great bike for me.
It depends on how much gear you carry and how fast you ride. My best has been 200 miles, my worst with bad winds was 160 miles. Lots of offroad will also reduce the mileage some.
svartpilen 401 vs ktm 390 adventure. What’s the difference? From what I can tell they’re very similar same suspension, engine, frame breaking system. So same bike but the less known is 4999$ vs 6199. Only advantage is better info screen wind protection and light crash bars come on ktm plus bigger fuel tank. But if you don’t care about that why not get the 1200$ less svartpilen 401?
The Svartpilen 401 is equivalent to the KTM 390 Duke specs. There are quite a few differences in these two bikes that make them handle differently. As for the cost difference, probably a marketing thing.
The 390 adventure top speed 167kmph / 105mph Cruising at 130kmph / 80mph Easily!! I don't understand why everyone seems to think the 390 Adventure can't or won't maintain highway/ freeway speeds it's just not true !!! If you need to overtake just kick it down to 5th gear and GO !!!
Totally agree, I am working on the complimentary video to this one talking about what this bike is like on the road. Should post within the next week to address all the questions I get about it on the road. Cheers.
Hey matt. I've recently brought a 390 and I'm currently setting it up for gravel/ light trail and adventure riding. I've only ever had enduro bikes before so I wanted to ask if you turn off the traction control when off tarmac or does it work well if you leave it activated?
Is the quick-shift really installed on all US 390 ADV? I never tried on my 2021 and thought it was a dealer-installed option. But the slipper clutch is so light that it's just fun to use and blip the throttle and match gear speed... I've heard that the US-spec bike has stronger wheel castings compared to some overseas markets. Have you heard of this or had any concerns with the alloys bending in gravel/rock riding? (thanks for the video on importance of doing oil/filter changes, especially that first oil AND filter swap!) --> th-cam.com/video/SrrrEwSCY_k/w-d-xo.html
I thought all of the U.S. bikes came with the quick shifter as a standard, but with this quick shifter you have to blip the throttle, it is not like more sophisticated shifters. To me it seems the same as clutchless shifting. I dont know about the wheels, but I can say I have pounded mine and they are hanging in there. I still want spoked wheels at some point, and I will convert them to tubeless.
Have you experienced any reliability issues with the bike? I am looking to get a 390 but some of the forums have comments about certain issues like oil pressure. I've never bought a KTM before and was concerned about its reliability.
I haven't experienced any reliability issues with this bike. I have 5500 miles on it now and I am planning a one week 2500 mile ride on it. I haven't had any oil pressure issues but I will take a look. I infrequently experience an engine stall but it seems to be a problem with the 390 Duke as well. I was a bit nervous about buying a KTM too, but so far it has been a great bike, and I have ridden it hard. This bike is so much fun to ride and is really easy to ride. I am not sure there is another bike in the small adventure segment that compares, which is why I bought this one. Hope this helps.
@@advmatt Thanks for the info. I looked up the stalling issue and it appears to be related to the throttle body and having to clean it and the air box. There is a great video that shows how to resolve. Probably 2 hours work using a whole can of throttle cleaner, (if you know your way around). 8 hours for me on a good day. th-cam.com/video/MfozYH8W7sM/w-d-xo.html

I am 5' 10". I am not sure how to answer your question. Bike fit is personal preference. I have an R1200GS and the 390 ADV is just as comfortable for me. With bar risers and new footpegs that are a little lower you can gain some cockpit space. Try to get a test ride if possible.

I did change its front sprocket to 14 teeth, did the trick for me
@@ageless1003 what sprokect did you get?
@@CallsItLikeISeizeIts duke 250, now we also have 48 teeth after market rear sprocket available in India as well.
boosterplug.com there are plenty of install videos and reveiws on YT !
Hi,
When you adjust the forks and reference clicks from open do you mean fully counter clock wise towards the - or fully clock wise towards the + ? Thanks! Great video!
Open is backed out counterclockwise, toward the '-'. This allows the most oil flow in the fork leg.
@@advmatt awesome thanks.
Man, nice how are those tkc70 tires on and off road !
I really like the TKC70 front tire and have the TKC70 Rocks on the rear. On the road they are fantastic. Offroad they have performed way better than I expected. The only time the front tries to wash out is when the road has a lot of silt or really deep gravel. Rear is amazing, digs and grabs.
I wish it came with the spoked wheels instead of needing to spend another 1k from KTM for the set.
I agree, I dont understand why KTM hasn't released and "R" version.
Thxs
Loved it
We ll said about the "proper" application of the bike.
I notice you have added a wind deflector to the GIvi screen - is that something you use in all situations now or just for particular purposes?
I would like to see a link for the deflector,it goes very well with the Givi screen.
@@advmatt thanks for the feedback
3000 miles. Like the bike more everytime I ride it
Just hit 4500, am continually impressed.
Hi. What is the range with the standard tank. Thanks
The 390 adventure top speed 167kmph / 105mph
Cruising at 130kmph / 80mph Easily!!
Cheers.
What windscreen did you find the best for wind protection?
I found the Puig windscreen yo be the best, but it is tall. Here is the video for it. th-cam.com/video/uNAFzH0byrk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=i3srngf20nu6q78I
Hey matt. I've recently brought a 390 and I'm currently setting it up for gravel/ light trail and adventure riding. I've only ever had enduro bikes before so I wanted to ask if you turn off the traction control when off tarmac or does it work well if you leave it activated?
Great purchase. You have a lot of fun miles ahead of you. I turn TC off everytime I hit dirt.
@@advmatt cheers bro. Looking forward to riding it from the uk to Portugal in June!
Did you have to get new cables with the bar riser or did the stock fit?
Stock cables fit, I had to move the clutch 1/2" toward the center of the bars. That was all that was needed.
Why didn't you go with the bash plate from KTM?
Because it was not available when I did this trip and I was waiting for Black Dog Cycle Works to release there skid plate.

@@simonf.2504 thanks, I will take a look at that video.
650 Triumphs were once known for HP…40 HP!
More than enough! Paired with a six speed transmission and now it does it all.
What panniers did you go with?
I was using the Givi Canyon bags but one came off and was list. I just purchased Tusk Pilot bags. I havent used them yet, but I am packed for a 10 day trip starting next week.
@@advmatt nice, so is that a GIVI rack? Or Tusk rack?
@@advryan1 its neither rack. The rack is from Zana International. I have a couple videos from last fall regarding the tail and pannier racks. Much less expensive solution.
How tall are you? Heard some say over 6ft are quite uncomfortable, any thoughts?
I am 5' 10". I am not sure how to answer your question. Bike fit is personal preference. I have an R1200GS and the 390 ADV is just as comfortable for me. With bar risers and new footpegs that are a little lower you can gain some cockpit space. Try to get a test ride if possible.
@@advmattappreciate the response, guess I'll just need to wait for the showroom to open up and I'll find out for myself! Really enjoyed this video though, clearly the issues I've seen in short term and first reaction reviews have not stopped you having plenty of enjoyment on the ktm. Safe riding!
@@uneasyrider5172 thanks. I have pushed this bike beyond it's intended purpose. It is really capable in my mediocre hands. Hopefully you get a chance to try one out soon.
Hi man, how tall are you? I am scared that I will be to big for this bike
I am 5' 10". The bar risers helped the ergonomics, I need to get new footpegs that come back a little and lower another 1/2" inch. Try to get a test ride in.
Have you changed out the foot pegs?
Not yet. I am planning to order the Black Dog Cycle Works pegs in a few weeks.
Good deal. I Just bought a 390 today. Your videos helped me get a good sense of what is possible. Thank you for all your content and for the quick reply!
@@MyMn2 glad you found the videos useful. I have no doubt you will enjoy this bike. It is so much fun to ride. Cheers.
How is it on the hwy? That's my question..
Good question. This bike is a blast to ride on the roads. It is light nimble and flickable. It is not intended for long hours at interstate speeds but can handle short stints without any problems. I have to re-record the road review for this bike. I hope to have it out in the next couple of months.
@@advmatt i think the industry as a whole needs to start dropping weight..Big ADV bikes are great on road and gravel but terrible offroad because their too heavy. If they put out a smaller bike with decent horsepower and a few road comforts i would be all over it in an instant.
Anyone tested the stock crash guards?
I have now. They work as designed.
👍
Would you ride your bike on a KTM Adventure Rally?
I havent seen what is involved in KTM adventure rally so I dont know. I will say I have taken this bike places I would never have taken my R1200GS.
Tactical greetings ;)
Its not an off road bike. Sure , it will go off road but the suspension and wheels are not designed for enduro.
Yep, not an offroad bike. It's an adventure bike. Not great at any one thing but capable of just about everything, slowly.
But I don't wanna ride slower.... lol.
