My husband dropped about 30 lbs (13 kg or about 2 stone) and suddenly his suits made him look like a kid wearing his dad's clothes. He bought 3 new tailored suits and a tux and looks great when we go to more dressy events. We were dressing up for Halloween and since he is tall, we went for a Frankenstein's monster/Bride of Frankenstein theme. I wanted one of his old suit jackets that we could pad out the shoulders for the Monster to wear. We couldn't find one in time. Oh well.

I love the shout out to Hawaii! As a Hawaiian sartorial dresser, I love seeing vintage Hawaiian photos with classic summer-weight fabric suits/ensembles and straw hats. Unfortunately those days have passed, but one thing I would like to point out about the video is that the genre of "Hawaiian shirts" or "Aloha Shirts" is actually quite diverse. There is a hierarchy of fabric quality, pattern/design, and cuts. These shirts have quite a history that is unique to our state, which is why it feels culturally "out of context" elsewhere in the world. I learned this the hard way myself! On one end, some Aloha shirts are designed to look very professional and "classic," while others on the other end of the spectrum are designed for tourists/parties. Understanding the spectrum of nuance - which types of shirt are acceptable given the situation and one's role in it - is key in Hawaii. Additionally, we started Aloha Friday (the tradition of wearing aloha shirts to work on Fridays) to help support our local textile industry, which has, unfortunately, shrunk considerably. I would say that anyone who has graced our shores and truly appreciates the ʻĀina and our way of life should pick one up. There's even a style that would suit gentlemen such as yourself!

I was over 200 shirts at one point, but I've culled severely and risen back into the low 100s. I wear them daily (In Nebraska) and after 20-odd years of collecting I only buy a new shirt if it meets my quality criteria. Obviously, not for everybody. But as this channel has said before, wearing a quality garment with confidence is sometimes all you need.

Agree. Not great for formal business attire but dress shirts aren't just for the office. Most times I see bold shirts are in semi formal occasions where they are the accessory versus a nice looking watch or similar item.
They work, you just need to use them when appropriate.

I’m sorry, but just because “fashionistas” say that square toed shoes are out of style, doesn’t mean I’m not wearing mine anymore. Plenty of men do. Who cares what others say is in or out? Wear what you feel comfortable in. My square toed shoes are only slightly squared, but give me a break. So I should just bring them to Goodwill because some say they’re not stylish? Come on. That aside, love your videos. And all else that you say are points well taken. Except for the Tommy Bahama silk Hawaiian shirts…love ‘em!

I'd argue the fact that style and confidence merges in a way that creates such subjectivity and opinion that it boils down to this: wear it if you like it and makes you confident, let it go if it doesn't. You can see this holds true even to him as his opinion of his own changes over time along with what's popular and unique design preferences

I have 1 pair of trousers that are 32" waist and a Harris Tweed jacket that doesn't quite fit around the middle, they were tailored to fit when I was about 27 and they also cost a small fortune at the time and after a long battle with weight (300 pounds to 185 pounds) I keep these items in the wardrobe as I live and hope that I will fit into them again, It will feel like closure of my weight troubles. just before the pandemic, I was so close, about 3 pounds away from fitting into them comfortably, now after a bead few months I'm an extra 4- 5 pounds on top of that I was nearly close to giving up. But now after losing a few pound I'm confident that I'm back on track, so I'm just not ready to give up on them just yet, especially when I feel I'm so close to my target weight. My deal is, If I'm not at my target weight by the end of the year. The items of clothing will go to my local clothing charity. The clothes will be 15 years old by then and If I don't fit into them after all that time, might as well swallow my pride and get rid.

I bought a beautiful (and expensive) black suit and had a tailor finish the trousers and adjust the jacket. When I collected it, I brought it in its suit holder back to the office. When I arrived, my colleagues told me that there had just been an announcement that the office was going business casual, and formal suits and ties were being actively discouraged. So the suit still sits in my wardrobe. I've never worn it. As I bought it 1999 it has the high gorge, 3 button style of the day that would look very dated today. What a waste of money .... The only other thing I ever bought that went to the charity shop unworn was a printed orange shirt that I liked, but just didn't have the balls to wear out. Being older now, I'd wear it as I don't care what people think to the degree that I did as a younger man in my early 20's. You live. You learn

I do own a black suit with a blend of wool and polyester. It fits me well and is very breathable even in the hot sun. Since I'm musician I it works better if I wear all black on stage

This is such a great video. I know I have at least two of those hard contrasting polyester dress shirts I purchased right when I graduated from university. I bought them from my local Sears as my first professional garment along with a pair of polyester pants. Since then I’ve added more clothes with natural fibers, mostly preowned from thrift stores and online marketplaces; alas, clothes made of natural fibers are just too expensive for me at full price but I completely understand why they are so highly valued.

I agree with all of these in principle. For me personally, though, there are a few of these guidelines that I would pass on. I have a few loud ties and I also have a bunch of Hawaiian shirts and I wear them all because they kind of fit my goofy personality. If I’m in a goofy mood or having a fun day, I’ll put on one of those loud ties or aloha/Hawaiian shirts. Of course, if the situation calls for more traditional menswear, then I will wear that - and wear it well.

I just bought a 3 piece black suit for my son’s wedding and I must say it looks exquisite. Especially since I just lost 40 pounds. I’m gonna wear it with a white shirt with a penny collar and a black and silver tie. Oh yes, and a gray and black pocket square. And to top it off I’ll accessorize it with a gold pocket watch and chain. My son says I’ll be the best dressed guy at the wedding.

As usual, I liked the video a lot, but I couldn't help but notice that in the images at the end Rafael's green jacket looked very clear and sad and, and according to my memory of the original video in which that jacket was presented for the first time, its true color is much more cheerful and vivid 😮

I wholeheartedly agree with every item on your list with the exception of the Hawaiian shirt. There are so many variations of the style, and some should never have been made in the first place, however, a classic and subdued Hawaiian shirt has plenty of utility even today.

I have a v neck shirt in heather grey that is made out of a very specific cotton blend that I’ve never been able to find anywhere else. This thing is the softest material I’ve ever felt. Softer than cashmere or silk. It has holes in it but I refuse to throw it away. I wear it with things layered to cover the holes.

I bought an expensive navy blazer about 11 years ago, it fit for about 6 months then I gained weight and couldn’t lose it… 3 months ago I had weight loss surgery and it fits perfectly. Hopefully in 6 more months it will be too big and I can give it away and have one made that really fits well.

hehe.. I will totally admit that I have a box of silk dress pants that I picked up when Bachrach was going under. I am glad I loaded up when I did. the whole skinny/stretch thing happened and now mens ware has gone full on fast fashion. So, good luck finding dress pants that are this well made. Also, black suits have a time and place. Just keep them in their lane.

I used to buy those dress shirts in weird flashy jewel tone colors (bottle green, burnt orange, dark brown, etc.), but I agree they were always hard to combine with anything without looking like someone from a gangster movie. The only dark shirts I wear now are navy blue, but even that is a little hard to pull off.

A nice list and a reminder to get through my wardrobe and rid of rarely worn clothes. But I wouldn't agree to the point about bold coloured dress shirts, or to be precise, I wouldn't agree to 100%. As I am on the dandy side of menswear it's something I like and wear since years, because it gives the outfit the little extra. But I would agree that it's not the right kind of shirt for an formal outfit.

Especially the overabundance of black. Whenever Raphael mentions it, I think of Trinny and Susannah telling countless people to ditch the worn out black "safety" clothes and find more colour that suits you. It's more work, yes, but it's so much better for your look and your confidence when you figure it out! Black - in moderation only
