  • AMD’s APUs are now out. Both the 2200G and 2400G can game, as well as serving as decent processors for a budget computer. This video summarises everything I think you need to know about them, their design and how we can expect these products to develop in the future.
    0:00 - Summary
    1:37 - Vega graphics
    2:52 - The difference RAM makes
    4:07 - Ryzen’s secret to success
    5:39 - Ryzen+, but not quite.
    6:11 - FUTURE SPECULATION - More powerful chips?!
    7:08 - FUTURE SPECULATION - Laptops?!
    8:35 - Conclusion
    As I don’t have the 2200G or 2400G, I have relied on reviews for information. In order of appearance, check out the full reviews here:

    Many people In South Asian countries can't afford all that lavish GPUs because of these reasons.
    1) Currency conversion destroys the affordability because different country have different Purchasing power in terms of $.
    2) GPUs are considered as a 'luxury' item so upon adding Tax, Import Duties and Shipping cost, many a times people have to pay 150-200% of the actual cost.
    So These APUs are like a game changer for People in these countries and will help AMD tap into these untouched Markets

    I didn't realize that the APUs had only one CCX, that explains why we haven't seen a Ryzen 7 APU. I wasn't expecting that explanation from 2kliksphilip considering how many hardware channels I watch.

    Amd is kicking Intels ass since zen architecture launched and I love it. CPUs where never so cheap for that much power..sadly gpus and ram prices are skyrocket high

      Tukan TV
      I love competition, but kicking ass aint true. Coffee lake beats ryzen and they rushed that shit out. Atleast AMD is being competitive finally. And threadripper only wins in vaule and not performance and companies who use 20 cores cpu would rather have performace than saving 500$ sometimes. And in gpu terms well. Their "gaming" gpu is a joke compared to a 1080Ti and runs hot as fuck. Hopefully team red can catch up.

    • @TomJacobW
      @TomJacobW 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tukan TV thanks to new markets (pubg in china - massive influx of hardware buyers; global wealth going up and more people in generally buying hardware, *) it's so high. I nearly fell of my chair when I saw how much all of that stuff costs now!
      Edit: *forgot those crypto miners. Those damn, damn miners...

    • @ExacoMvm
      @ExacoMvm 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Intel kicked ThreadRippers and Ryzens series with its 8th gen.
      Not even talking about their Xeons, AMD is nowhere close to achieve the power level of Intel.
      The only advantage of AMD is that it will use same socket till 2020, meanwhile intel will change it every second gen or something.
      Also Ryzen sucks for CS:GO. Intels i3 beats Ryzen 5 1600 in most games, especially in CS:GO.
      Meanwhile the $300 i7-8700K beats $999 Threadripper 1950x in workstation tasks and gaming overall.

    • @CIRCADES
      @CIRCADES 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exaco Coffe Lake is Intel's latest generation architecture and an unfair comparison to the at this point old first generation Zen architecture. That's why they rushed Coffe lake - so these comparisons would be made. I'll be waiting on Ryzen 2 (Zen+ 12 nm) coming in April and then decide. Also, Ryzen is still faster at multi-threaded work loads (PCs aren't just used for gaming you know...)

    • @VADemon
      @VADemon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Exaco I cannot imagine a 6 core CPU beating a 16 core CPU in workstation loads. Proof?

  • @WickedRibbon
    @WickedRibbon 6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    As higher-end gpu tech has kinda stagnated over the past couple of years (for various reasons), I've become more and more fascinated with lower end hardware.
    The consolidation of gpu grunt alongside power/heat optimisation is super impressive in this chips. I don't think we've ever had a better entry point for PC gaming (RAM not withstanding).

    not gonna lie; I'd love to see a TR processor with only 2 ccx's dedicated to cpu (such that it would be an octocore), and the rest (so the 6 other ccx's, spread out over the "non-functional" dies) would just be vega. I mean, there wouldn't be a use case for it (not one that I can think of, at least), but imagine a threadripper processor with 8 cores and 66(!) vega cores. Just sounds cool af.

    • @bass-dc9175
      @bass-dc9175 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that would be pretty dumb.
      I'd rather see a Combined CPU + GPU fiber like the AMD+Intel APU solution for laptops.
      That could technically give you GTX 1050ti-1060 Performance at an Affordable level.
      Most people don't have a TR compatable Mobo. And I'd rather see AMD come up with a solution for Laptops, since at TR and Ryzen 5 1600 (and above) pricepoints: Most people will buy dedicated Graphics.

    New upcomming manufacturing scale could probably enable them to fit six cores and a vega unit into a simmilar space that four cores and a vega unit nowadays. No reason to make the processor chip litself larger just for that.
    Anyways, the progress is great when it comes to CPU's and GPU's. Only if the prices stablizied. (GPu's and RAM's). And thanks for an informative video!

    Currently watching on a HP Pavillion 15 Laptop. While I'm not looking for new gaming laptops (since I already have this one which handles decently and a new PC that can max out all I would ever want on 1080p) I want it to thrive as the convenience is amazing, especially with close by gaming friends and being a holiday traveller. Maybe one day I will be able to cross the seas and skies and still have access to an arsenal of high quality games. I guess for now I need to stick with 30/60 fps low/medium/sometimes high (depending on game, which is made worse by the screen's terrible downscaling which can only handle native 1080p without making the keyboard unusable) with something greater to return to.

    The key difference between the laptops the APUs are currently in and the ones with say a GTX1050 or rx550 isnt just a price to performance thing. Its a weight and thickness thing too, they can fit in the chassis of a normal thin and light without much thermal strain.
    although, they could make the quietest gaming laptop in the world if you used cooling for a gaming laptop on it.
    Something else to note, i think they were going for as much as 200 dollars less before christmas and then by christmas they went up. They are definitely cheaper to produce i think its just difficult for the manufacturers to keep up.
    Also i went to best buy and its definitely one of the better deals they have on their shelves. And realistically if you dont have the money to buy a high end gaming laptop your probably going to get a shitty laptop as a gift anyways. the only laptops in or under the price range of the APU laptops are either shitty FX based ones or Kaby lake Hyperthreaded dual cores with the same amount of ram and storage and no graphics to speak of.

    Give me a r5 1600 version of the apu with 6 scores and I would agree. But in all honesty 4 cores will be going out (since intel i5 is 6 core trust me game devs program for that) it might be a year or two. Mainly stating because when you watch these videos of the fps the cpu is getting either really close or already pegged at 100%.

    Doesn't seem like integrated Vega 11 is that much of an upgrade from my discrete GTX 650 especially with the cost of buying fast enough ram to make the most use out of it. Guess I'l be sticking with old hardware for a few more years at least.

    Is it really THAT budget especially when Dual-Channel memory gives far better performance than Single Channel though? RAM Pricing is a bit high and 8GB won't be enough since you'd want to set 2GB of VRAM to the GPU if you want playable performance.

  • @V4mplr3

    I also liked the review from hardware Unboxed the most... Only wished they tested csgo on most played resolutions, without anti aliasing, or multisampling because it kills the game on this low budget configs...

    These APUs are great, but they have so powerful graphics, that they are memory limited.
    Even 2200G with overclocked iGPU hits the memory bottleneck way before reaching it's full potential.

    i still think a g4560 with a gt 1030 is a better product, you can sell the gt 1030 for a future upgrade, and ram prices, aaand because the vega uses 2 gb of ram and you have to buy 16gb to be safe in dual channel, they need to start to sell 6gb ram slots, so you dont need to buy 2x4gb or 2x8gb, but 2x6gb

    • @polentusmax6100
      @polentusmax6100 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i will have to buy a new pc, new intel or amd is out for me, i will import a x79 board and a used server cpu from aliexpress, everything else is too expensive, lga 2011 is quad channel and use ddr3, same speed as ddr4.
      But i agree with your point about ryzen upgrade against intel.
      My future setup:
      cpu- e5 2640 (6c/12t, 2,5ghz) = 52$
      mobo- x79 huanan v2.49 = 104$
      ram- ddr3 ecc 1600mhz 4x4gb = 15*4= 60$
      and some import taxes
