  • It was a long weekend of testing... unfortunately our testing is inconclusive and will need to be redone once AMD can figure out why our sample is not working properly.

      If a quadcore CPU suffices for the person, sure, then go ahead and buy it and maybe upgrade it later. The problem for me is that you can't get more than 4 cores on this platform which strongly limits the group of people to whom it is interesting. I think for example about console emultors, HTPC's (without videoptimization like madVR) and students who don't need much hardware and buy/build their first PC. It is good value/money, maybe even great value/money, but not interesting for those who desire/need more CPU cores or more powerful graphics, also because it has to make do with DDR4 (much lower bandwidth). In short, I've got mixed feelings.

      wait for the ryzen 7 version, it'll fix most of these issues. With GPU prices the way they are right now this is actually a great option for everything 1080p high or below

    • @alexanderdaum8053
      @alexanderdaum8053 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +flashkillpro the ryzen 7 version will still only have 4 cores, since it is a single CCX in Raven Ridge

    • @MindBlowerWTF
      @MindBlowerWTF 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Its designed as budget option. Did You expect it to be comparable to 1050? Its 170$ I think - if You want decent CPU and GPU then You have to be willing to spend more.

    • @flashkillpro
      @flashkillpro 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      yes but the need for 6 cores in most gaming uses is very very limited and will only be implemented in the next 3 to 5 years. For now having 4 fast cores is the optimum so its fine. Also these are budget cpus for budget gamers so they're still great value. I understand your point im just saying that 6 cores is a bit overkill right now and that 4 cores with more cache and clock speed will outperform 6 or 8 core cpu's with slower clock speeds in 95% of games today ;)

      hard to build something for 200 bucks.... in this case, you play 100 for the CPU, 100 for a motherboard...... and still need a power supply, case, ram(, bluray drive).....

      I'm not watching netflix and "apps" for those two console suck hard anyway. I'm using PLEX. Which has apps available for PS4 and Xbox One. Also I can use it as a 4K Bluray player.
      360 doesn't play bluray at all, PS3/PS4 don't play 4K content.
      Honestly, for watching netflix with the comfort of an 360, I wouldnt need any additional device at all, my TV is already able to do that..... it even has a dedicated netflix button....
      Netflix sucks balls.

      Ram wont really return to normal. Atleast, not now. The ram pricing reflects the increase in it's raw material. It cost more to make and so it is only natural that they are sold at a higher price. GPU however have no reason to have been subjected to almost a 100% price increase. It is ridiculous.

    • @naughtyhorses
      @naughtyhorses 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1030 looks awful (GamerNexus tested just such a setup). It's easy to say, and not much help, but if you can't build a decent rig, you pretty much can't game! - or at least the experience will always be compromised. If you have to run 720 with low settings..... go buy a playstation.

    • @Floodedisposition
      @Floodedisposition 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You absolutely can game. I’m still using a i7 2600 with a gtx770 and games run just fine.

    • @naughtyhorses
      @naughtyhorses 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      And quickly googling "compare gtx770 with gt 1030" reveals that in benchmarks the 770 massively outperforms the 1030 - EG double the frame rate for CS-GO!
      1st hit on google:
      gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-770-vs-Nvidia-GT-1030/2174vsm283726
      I'd say just 'fine' is about right, PUBG at 4k would be a stretch - my GTX970 machine runs around 60-80 fps on high settings at 1080, whereas my GTX1080Ti spits out around 110-120 fps on ultra at 4k. i'm sure your 770 would be just fine (60+fps) at 1080 with judiciously tweaked gfx settings. but the 1030... not so much.... unless pubg supports 640x480! :-)

    I think ryzen 3 2200g is more interesting than the 2400g.cause its giving almost similar performance of gt 1030(slightly slower) but an very interesting price point of 99$.
    A similar cpu+gpu config
    G4560+ gt 1030 = 160$
    Ryzen 3 2200g = 99$
    Yes its a bit slower than the gt 1030 but I'm saving 60$ here
    With 60$ i can also go for a budget b350 mobo like asrock b350m or gigabyte one's which is also oc capable.

      Benchmark scores for these APUs are very inconsistent across reviews. Some have the APUs neck and neck with the GT1030 and RX550, while others have the APUs trailing with all sorts of stuttering and 1% issues. Once you factor in the fact the APUs need high rated dual channel RAM kits while discrete builds are perfectly happy with slow-ass single sticks, it all becomes a huge mess that needs an Excel spreadsheet the size of Hawaii and a few days with a supercomputer to work out what you should have bought before all the prices changed and *ARGHHHHHHHHHH*

    It much more seems like a MSI problem than an AMD problem to me. So far MSI is the weak link on the AM4 platform, the most problems with system crashes and DOA's and the last to get memory at a certain clock frequency with certain timings compatible. MSI blames AMD for being too late with giving data but other companies seem to handle it better. A matter of how much resources you invest in it?

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ASRock performed best in the first 2 months after the launch of Ryzen, no doubt about that! The first week several reviewers reported 3200/3600 MT/s on the ASRock AM4 Taichi. Asus came second, Gigabyte third and MSI was a hazard. Later Asus caught up well, I would guess that at the moment it is a tie between Asus and ASRock and it depends on what die you use. In forums you notice that most of the guys who are reporting problems for AM4 with either the RAM frequency (not even getting it to 2933 or 3166 MT/s) or the stability use a MSI motherboard, however the reviewers complained a lot about MSI to in the first weeks; many DOA's, having trouble to get it to work. I think it is due to a combination of being used to get much more time to sort it out and not having enough people to work on it.
      My advice: buy either a X370 Asus Prime Pro ($140) or a AM4 Taichi ($200), both are great motherboard with regard to the hardware and deliver good value/$. The Taichi has a bit of a user manual (UEFI) but the RAM-support is good and the VRM's are excellent. The Asus Prime Pro is the cheapest motherboard with good enough VRM's for any next generation Zen CPU.

      I don't know to what extend the hardware made the difference, I do know that the experts (like the computer scientists and consultants from Level1Techs) were very much impressed by the AM4 Taichi from ASRock. Anyway, be it hardware or software, with regard to hardware AS Rock and Asus both offer good options for a reasonable price. That is in my opinion one of the big problems for MSI on AM4, they don't offer such good hardware and the RAM support is crappy, even now still many users don't get above 2600 MT's wiht 3000/3200 MT/s binned modules , that is sad, on Asus and AS Rock 2933 MT/s is pretty much guaranteed if your module is binned for it.
      The last few years I have the strong impression that MSI and Gigabyte consider AMD to be a lower tier platform for which they can offer less value than for the Intel and Nvidia platforms. I noticed this with the RX 480 (MSI reused the for Pascal designed shrouts, the heat sinks didn't overlap the GPU and RAM and as a consequence the card got hot and loud), the RX 580 (same story, even for their higher tier Gaming X card) and for AM4. Gigabyte did a bit better for the RX 580 and AM4 but you notice the same trend. Asus slipped up for the RX 480, their RX 580 and AM4 was fine. Obviously Ryzen and Polaris don't deserve to bet treaten as a second-tier platform, these CPU's and GPU's are very much competitive with what Intel and Nvidia have to offer, this is no Bulldozer.
      My point of view: I look at how well the companies performed for several products of the last generations. MSI is out, I don't give them a chance for a while until they show improvement for at least 2 generations, Gigabyte is low on my list. For the graphics cards I favor Sapphire (excellent 580 and Vega), XFX and Asus, for the motherboards ASRock and Asus.

      @peterjansen4826 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it takes some maze-solving to change the setings for the ASRock motherboards but at least you can get everything done. Personally I would chose the Asus Prime Pro X370 given the quality/price. The quality is not top notch but it certainly is better than any other

      Justin Baughman Discord i do easily on 8gd DDr4 2666mhz and game at the same time. Do you really watch youtube whilst gaming? A web Browser isn't gonna smash your CPU and RAM hard unless you have alot of instances running and no page file....Corsair 8GB Vengeance LPX DDR4 2666MHz 2x 4GB Skylake i5 6400. Its the same reason i got an i5 rather than i7 for the price increase vs the performance increase its not worth it unless you do content creation or video (like adobe after effects etc). You are talking about 11% for a doubling of price. Your resolution you game at, the type quality and size of the VRAM on your GPU, the titles you play and settings all make a significant difference. 16gb won't be common or necessary for a few years yet. I'd buy a bigger or faster SSD, especially as Game sizes are increasingly massively.

    Why is no one wondering how setting 2GB dedicated memory makes a difference? It shouldn't. What happens when the frame buffer is full? Stuff gets written to system memory instead which is slower. But in this case, both are the same. So it should not matter at all. In fact it should be the best to just set the dedicated graphics memory to as low as possible. So when you're doing graphically low intensity stuff you don't just lose 2GB of system memory.
    So how is this kind of result possible?
    Jay, could you test with 32MB UMA? This would be too low for basically anything right? So it would be forced to basically always write to system memory.

    • @reddev5420
      @reddev5420 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Exactly! I was just about to type a similar comment until I saw yours. I was scratching my head when Jay said setting a larger buffer made any difference whatsoever. All you're doing by setting it higher is limiting the amount of RAM Windows can use for other things when it's not required for the GPU. Windows memory management is pretty damn good. When using an iGPU I always set this to the lowest possible amount, and let Windows do it's own thing with memory allocation.

    Hi +JayzTwoCents , I don't think u understand what "UMA Frame buffer size" means. This buffer size is not accessible to the OS for normal system tasks, it is reserved for the IGD. Period. This figure does not represent the Max memory allocation for the IGD. Once the IGD consumes all of this buffer it will simply start using the system memory like a normal GPU. And since this buffer and System memory are the same, there is no delay/penalty, unlike a conventional GPU. This is why there is no difference in FPS in games whether you use 512MB or 2GB, If you do your benchmarks properly.
    If you had problems with the hardware that AMD sent you then you should have reported it and STOPPED. Instead you decided to use an un-updated mobo and basically spread misinformation. I think this was very sloppy. I hope you can redo the tests properly again with an updated mobo.

    The problem regarding GPU prices is really online I've reached out to various computer stores in the area (Tampa Bay) and they are getting GPU's there is one store here that got 6 ZOTAC 1080 & 1080 ti another got various EVGA cards I got a Z 1080 ti amp extreme for about $100 over MSRP well under a thousand bucks. It took calls driving out there having a few conversations but in less then a month he gave me a call we stuck a deal "Only because I know you...." And I have a pretty yellow box on my couch that I would pay 300+ more for online at Amazon and Newegg. I sometimes wonder with GPU's getting more and more powerful will they ever break off the need for a CPU or even include an onboard cpu in their videocard boards? That would be almost like a console without the need for a cpu / mothernoard but i guess the question is can you do other general computing on it, but id imagine it can if you had like the 2500k equivalent cpu built onto a video card it should also do normal computing too. Its cool to see cpus add gpu's to their cores but right now GPU's are the ones that need all the power in games at leaste so it would make sense to add a minimalist cpu just to not bottleneck the video card Then you could have an all in one card for 1k that does 4k gaming without the need to buy a computer to put it in.

    That's the exact same case with the same profile any everything my current build is using, though I'm using a full sized ATX version of the case, an Intel 8500 i5 CPU and a dedicated GPU (1070ti) so it's not exactly the same, but glad to see that case is making rounds. I like it a lot. I got my 1070ti when the Turing hype was high a few months back and NVIDIA GPU's dropped in anticipation of a new generation (which has now been confirmed to be a while off, so I expect them to rise again) and I assume some other factors were involved in pricing too. Though now they've gone back up slightly and seem to be on the rise.
    I originally wanted a 1080Ti, but seeing as how I very rarely even attempt to game in 4K and my 1070Ti with only minor stock OC's from MSI can crush anything I throw at it in the 1440P/2K range, I guess there isn't currently a point. I still think it's tragic I paid 1080 price for a 1070Ti, I truly hope mining dies out, cryptocurrency needs some new kind of way to be introduced into the economy without mining, as mining is hurting hardware pricing badly on top of it introducing a new generation of malware that has people using your machine to mine for them. Nothing good has come out of mining for the average consumer, only bad.
    But my god, seeing an APU capable of handling lower-scale 1080P gaming pretty well is just, it makes me giddy. I had multiple APU-run systems, mostly laptops, for a long time. They were always better than my experience using Intel integrated graphics, but they could never truly PC game. At least not with any modern games, or even semi-modern. Seeing that change is a good day for PC gaming. Also you aren't wrong about Doom, I got it running decently on some lower settings using an old HD 6990 and an FX processor with only 6GB's of DDR3. It runs on anything.

    I'm going to get the 2200g. Reason 1 I have an fm2 slot apu+ a r7 370 paired with it. The apu horribly bottlenecks the gpu I'm going to give the gpu back to my friend and upgrade to the am4 platform with this apu. Or maybe I'll attempt to use the 2200g with my r7 370 idk if it will go well. Can anyone give advice?

    Couldn't find any benchmarks to compare with my current old build so I hope I'll get a short "Yes" or "No" here. Would this Ryzen APU build out-perform my current Pentium G3258 (4.2Ghz), R9-280 3GB, 8GB Vengeance LP 1600, Asus Z97-Ar Mobo system ? And would it be an investment to go out and buy this Ryzen APU build or should I just change-out couple of parts on my current system? Thank you

      If you game could could get a used i5 or even an i7

    Hey Jay, Ive experienced the same "black screen of death" on Intel's Devils canyon 4690k and an rx480 8g from MSI. The issue seems to be related, at least for me, to a windows update that is causing this to happen on some systems... For me, jumping onto Windows 7 has solved all of my issues. Even after re-installing windows 10, the system will still crash with a black screen. Maybe this helps?

  • @timsteiniger2011

    • @theindooroutdoorsman
      @theindooroutdoorsman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cubei My understanding pf how an APU works is extremely limited, so I'm probably wrong here... But a 2400G running 4c/4t is splitting the load 50/50 for CPU and GPU tasks, isn't it? That would severely hamper the PC on the CPU side. Dedicate 2 cores to the GPU side of things and still have a functional quad core for strictly CPU tasks.

    • @theindooroutdoorsman
      @theindooroutdoorsman 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Cubei Ah, see that makes sense. I formed a theory based on how awful Intel HD graphics are.

    Offtopic - I was wondering which scales better in 2018 Crossfire VS SLI. Could you please do a test for that with similar GPUs (like Vega 64 CF vs GTX 1080 SLI or something like that). I'm pretty sure multiGPU is not worth it (was it ever!) but it would make for a good video to see if both AMD and NVIDIA are really giving up on it. I've seen some videos on the matter but none with a strait up scale comparison between CF and SLI

    Hey Jay,
    Im getting the same blackscreen shutdown during gaming on my machine. I have managed to prevent the blackscreen by keeping my GPU above 99% utilization. i believe it has to do with frames going back to the CPU im not entirely sure if its memory based or not but i am technically running an unsupported kit with my MOBO.
    I have the Asrock B350 Mini-ITX and a kit of 2x8GB 2933MHz Gskill trident z(1.35v kit but motherboard says only 1.2v). Im also running the R5-1600.
    Please publish your findings as it would help me diagnose my situation too.
    Also in order to test my Blackscreen Prevention theory i tested 2 Radeon HD7850s (one at 860MHz one at 975MHz) and tried older GPUs like the HD6850 and HD3850. Based on the results of the two HD7850s i concluded that the lower the coreclock the less the machine would crash. I got the crashes down to once every day or so. upon testing the HD6850 and HD3850 i realized that any card that is under full load would be stable for an indefinite amount of time.

    JayzTwoCents Is it possible to potentially get more Vram this way then using a dedicated GPU? For instance, let's say the person had 128gb of high speed memory 3200mhz+, instead of allocating 2gb like you are showing here, couldn't more like 12gb or 15gb or even 20gb be allocated? With a higher speed RAM and higher amount of capacity and a higher core CPU like a 10-core couldn't this way of computing graphics potentially outperform the GPUs that we use today(1070 or 1080)? with a GPU you are capped at the vram of that particular card (or PC within a PC like you said), ex. 8gb or 10gb for GTX 1070 and GTX 1080s. Or does this really come back to CUDA cores which is not something offered by this CPU - RAM onboard combo? Meaning the ability of a dedicated GPU to off CUDA cores is always going to outperform any combination of onboard graphics.

    About the black screen, dude I swear this is a genuine problem I get this all the time! But with a 2gb 270x r9 200 graphics card and the Ryzen 3 1300x which safe to say is an equivalent setup as a GPU and CPU. CRASHES SO OFTEN and recommended settings according to the game is always high 1080p and I find myself often turning it down. No OC, everything is standard. MGS5 takes about 3 reboots in 60 seconds before I can start playing properly, same with Skyrim, Fortnite. Forza Horizon 3, Sniper Elite 4, don't run but load and this is according to whoever I've gotten to ask about this good enough.

    Great video---RE 2 games.I have the Ryzen 3, 9 gb, usable 2.7, virtual memory, 4 kern in a new computer. Call of Duty AW and COD Black ops both delay and freeze sometimes. Dissapointment after my Radeon GTX 750 smoothness.I do get more detailed graphics but not thrilled with the freeze frames. All other computations fly! Why?,
    i'm a novice.Here's adumb question.Are you saying I can plug my GTX into the mother board slot , then plug monitor. sound, etc into the gtx inputs and bypass the Ryzen?
