Nvidia removed GPP! This video no longer applies.

  • 4th of May, 2018, Nvidia cancelled GPP, which is what this video originally talked about: blogs.nvidia.com/blog/2018/05...
    ...but I'll keep this video up, for historical significance.
    Nvidia are at it again with something else that, although probably legal, and although just 'business', is somewhat dickish. And I think is worth knowing.

    • @Hasse.Andersson
      @Hasse.Andersson 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Yea and Facebook too? (do you read the news?)
      Monopolies are not good - but for the company itself. I would like to se more competition on the market
      Microsoft ??? Are you kidding me ? Windows 10 sending all your data to some server they can do whatever they want to ? Yea I know some of you might say I don't have to use them but in reality that is like owning a car and then get told that you don't need to drive on the roads, you don't have to use them.
      I could use Linux ofcourse but the norm in companies, schools, organisations and society is Windows so the decent applications and games are mostly only written for that... (a catch-22 thing)
      Then if a company has a monopoly it could set whatever price tag it likes, it's your choice if you whish to buy! if not then go to the competitor.

      It's no different than pepsi winning the entire cola war after "their" partnership rule passed. Who's left to compete with them? Coca-cola, and Dr.PepperSnapple group are out because they both went defunct due to them obviously not being a part of Pepsi's franchise.

      Fanboyism is a natural part of the human's tribal instinct. The belief that one should become a part of a community that they like, it's why sports fans live and breathe their favorite team. Why they'll (probably) even get into fist fights over them, or in some cases even *cause actual riots* even if their team won. Fanboyism is normal, but it's important for people to gain a sense of perspective and not let their love of a brand or team cloud their judgment.

      I don't think you understand. nVidia is _very clearly_ trying to harm AMD's market share and could very well lead to a monopoly if GPU production doesn't change from the horrible point it is right now.

    • @Chazistired
      @Chazistired 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Literally the only comment that stated that was only 1 person, and they're basically right. Please go take a look at where GPUs are standing and tell me that nVidia isn't effectively a monopoly at this point.
      They're not just hurting the free market, they're effectively trying to legally loophole themselves out of making it look like they're not trying to actively destroy every other competitor in order to drive up prices to a ridiculous amount and never release anything new. They know once they pull this off and people that are as equally money hungry and have no choice but to support them on this, they'll be a monopoly but they won't be able to be pinned for it because of all their shitty loop-hole abusing. They say they're a monopoly, because they effectively are a synonym of monopoly.

    Exactly, it's strictly business! If nVIDIA kicks AMD out of business, then they will no longer be the leading GPU company, they will be the ONLY GPU company.
    And that is exactly what they want. Not because they will sell more cards that way, but because they can spend less money on their R&D, improve less while selling for higher prices.
    The only people who would benefit from this are the shareholders of nVIDIA. Not the gamers

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Even if there is just one company they still have to release better products. Otherwise what incentive would consumers have to upgrade and buy more?

    • @gnomehanslan1430

      I remember when buying stuff in 7eleven was super costly but was super convenient here in my country. But when Familymart came in, offered basically the same stuff for even slightly less, it was actually good because they both ended up trying to undercut each other (atleast thats what happened here in my country).
      When I look at this... I would not be surprised if the 1050 ti costs as much as it is now compared to its MSRP, not because of miners, but because of having no competition whatsoever.

    • @1pcfred
      @1pcfred 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Crap on convenience store shelves is more equivalent than offerings from different graphics card producers though. So your comparison is apples and oranges. AMD would have to be practically giving their hardware away to make it worthwhile for me to experiment with it. While with Nvidia I know what is worth me buying. They're totally different kettles of fish.

      The GPU in a CPU is not a graphics card. There's no card. A "card" is a plug in circuit board. CPUs do not qualify as such. I wouldn't even call old Slot 1CPUs cards. Though they had all the attributes associated with being a card. FR-4 board, edge card connection, etc. AMD has a term for theirs, but if Intel does I am not presently aware of it. AMD calls theirs an, "APU", or an Accelerated Processing Unit. "Graphics card" itself is an improper term too. Technically they are referred to as, "Graphics adapters". But that term is clumsy and it is rarely used. It is still semantically more correct than "Graphics card" is though. Although why a graphics card is a graphics adapter has fundamentally changed over the course of time. I'm not as up on my XT tech as I could be. It is all pretty much worthless to know in this day and age. There is a fundamental difference between text and graphical output though. There was a time when that difference was expressed in physical hardware too. When text terminals could not output pixel graphics at all. Not without a "Graphics adapter" at any rate.

    AMD technology is open source Nvidia is closed source and AMD asked nvidia many times to make their software open source and they declined every time. Also Nvidia works with game companies to “help” their game development but what they really do is add in features that only nvidia cards can handle so when an AMD user plays the game they have horrible FPS but the Nvidia user wont. trust me im not joking. Nvidia has always been really shady towards AMD.

    Instead of solely focusing on improving their tech, Nvidia loves to pay the judges, so AMD is always at a disadvantage. Example :Vulkan, AMD supported API is open source, and AMD cards outperform the Nvidia ones. But Nvidia doesn't want a level playing field, so they get their own shit(GameWorks, PhyX, etc) which is closed off to AMD.

      Brooo007MC
      It uses data from API solutions, it's not accurate as result, plus you get sales of all computing solutions and not gamer releated ones in which GPP is interested in. If you look only at GPU market, in which manufacturers are invested in, Nvidia is 70% in sales. But if you throw out miners that don't have brand loyalty and buy things that are cheaper it's closer to 90%. Why you ask, because steam hardware survey shows that even with API's on board Nvidia is 85% of GPU's gamers use. You throw API's that irrelevant for manufacturers and get your 90% marketshare. Deal with it. store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

      As long as it is true competition, yes it is. Example, TV providers will actively stay out of each others areas. Technically they compete. They are companies offering the same service, but this kind of competition doesn't promote innovation. There is no reason to improve your company because your consumers have few other options that offer a service of a equivalent quality.

    People who say "Nvidia has a right to make money" have completely misunderstood the actual problem here. Nobody is saying NVidia doesn't have the right to compete within the market place and turn a profit. We are saying Nvidia doesnt have the right to stop everyone else doing that. I can easily say "AMD Has the right to make money", and as long as Nvidia is directly preventing that through shady practices, their argument is flawed by definition.
    I think they want their favourite brand to make money, and to hell with everyone else. In their mind, legitimate competition against their favorite brand has less right to exist than their brand.
    It's worse than Apple fanboys. At least Apple fanboys think Microsoft has a right to exist, even if they hate them.
    This is not the worst bullshit Nvidia has pulled. They outright refuse to help out in any capacity with open source software and driver support and would rather keep everything proprietary, leaving everyone completely reliant on them for their drivers. This gives them extreme power to do things like artificially slow down graphics cards through firmware, and leave us powerless to do anything about it. I doubt they have actually done this, but their graphics drivers are already extremely large behemoths that like to eat up any PC they are installed on, so I wouldn't put it past them to directly take control like that. FreeSync is just as good as G-Sync, yet G-Sync remains expensive and horrible simply because NVidia has a closed market on it and FreeSync is open and easily accessible. Technology is already stagnating under NVidia, and we are all worse off.
    As a result, personally, I am considering never buying an Nvidia card again. Sure, it means I will have to spend more money to get an equally powerful card, but I consider it an investment in the future. If spending a bit more now helps to keep graphics cards cheaper 5 years from now, it's worth it. If it means I have alternatives when it comes to drivers for my own graphics card, it's worth it.
    I guess this is more evidence for my theory that gamers are the worst consumers that exist. We are willing and even eager to be fucked over. First they did it with preorders, then with DLC, then lootboxes, and now with stuff like this. Every resistance or backlash against shady practices in gaming is a joke. Remember the famous MW2 boycott, that showed everyone playing the game? We are so obsessed with shiny things and brand new overhyped games and products that we don't have the self control to say no when they step over the line. Gamers are the worst thing to happen to gaming from a consumer rights standpoint.

      Funnily enough, this reminds me of the whole Riot Games vs Valve. I play both Dota2 and LoL and one of the most mind-boggling things I could not understand when I first started in LoL was how many quality of life features they were lacking. It took them an insane number of years to add replays, voice chat, and a practice mode. Their client was buggy and lacked gameplay information, making you rely on third-party websites to learn the game. Even so, the fans gobbled up every new skin release as if nothing was wrong.
      Riot could literally release a piece of shit and their fans would think it's a bar of gold. Makes no. Fucking. Sense.
      I don't even think it's about self-control at this point. I just think a lot of people don't know any better and don't care.

      AMD will never go bankrupt. They've already gotten Sony and Microsoft in the bag for next generation consoles and in the forseeable future as long as x86 is the dominant platform. What may happen is AMD may choose to focus their efforts away from PC gaming (who needs to write pesky drivers and tools when Sony and Microsoft will be happy to do that for you for free on their respective platforms) and just focus on semi-custom designs for their partners. Meanwhile only ones who lose are PC gamers and NVIDIA. If AMD leaves the PC graphics market, there's nothing to stop Intel (and AMD by extension) from severely hampering their performance by limiting PCIe bandwidth (only cards that need 8x+ are graphics cards) and working with AMD to outright eliminate the PCIe standard because AMD won't be holding them back (because AMD would no longer need PCIe to put their cards in a high end system). Intel is no longer bound to support PCIe (restrictions end this year) and if AMD hops on board all PC gamers will lose. Penny wise pound foolish here for NVIDIA.

    You're wrong about one thing - AMD releasing a superior GPU won't change shit. I assume that you've been around tech long enough to remember HD 5000 series and Geforce 400 series. Those were the competing generations from the 2 companies.
    On one side, you had GTX 460, 470 and 480. A slog, an embodiment of mediocrity and a nuclear furnace respectively. Terrible performance in DX11, drawing way too much power, and being severely overpriced. Geforce 500 fixed some of those issues but not completely. And both sold fucking gangbusters.
    On the other side, you had HD 5000 series, from 5670 on the entry level gaming GPU to 5970, a stupidly fast high end GPU. They were more efficient, cheaper, faster and didn't get as hot as the competition's offerings. Yet, for some *FUCKING* reason, it sold LESS than what nVidia had, and what everyone would argue is the worst generation of GPUs, possibly ever.
    So no, AMD making a better GPU won't change shit. Because fanboys will see that nVidia gets 3/4 of a frame more in CSGO and say "OOOH AMD GOT REKKKKKT LULZ" or whatever.

      Intel HD is not nothing. I do find it hard to compare it to other hardware though. Because it does seem largely ignored. People sure treat Intel integrated graphics like it is nothing. Intel is actually pretty good at video playback. They seem to make more effort with that than 3D. I also recently found out that my particular HD graphics does not support Vulkan. Though later models do. I think series 6 and up has Vulkan support? I have 4th gen Haswell. I'm still going to get a graphics card for this system someday. Hopefully prices will fall. My Quake doesn't dual screen right. It mirrors, it doesn't span. I don't know how to fix that either, if I even can? My desktop spans though. So I don't know what's up with that. There's not much info on the net about using Intel graphics.

      If there is competition then the companies will try to make the best product for as cheap price as possible but if there is no competition then there will be one company selling a kind of okay product for 10 times the price it would be if there had been competition

      Antitrust laws go into effect when two or more corporations attempt to avoid competition by not competing, allowing them to drive up prices. This is different, as Nvidia is attempting to kill AMD with shady tactics, rather than avoid competition.

      Finiesta do you realize the GTX 1080 is a midrange card? Yeah I'm serious here, the die size is of a midrange card. Which means Nvidia isn't giving us their best. Nvidia is so far ahead that it can actually release a midrange card as a high end. They are not giving us their best since the 900 series, those were really good efforts.

    I prefer to support AMD because they don't lock driver updates behind logins (GeForce experience sucks) and a lot of their fancy software tech (like their version of Gameworks) is open source and they don't force developers into exclusivity agreements before they're allowed to use them.
    I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of power to save a little money (vs NVIDIA equivalent) and live more in line with my ethics, and I hope more gamers will start supporting companies that are using business practices that are less negative for both consumers and developers, especially when AMD releases a high end gaming card.
    Here's hoping that AMD doesn't try to compete with NVIDIA by becoming NVIDIA.

      I don't recall ever being asked to login to use any of the GeForce Experience features... but then again, I did create an account and logged in because they occasionally offer free keys to closed betas, which is neat.
      Still, unless something has changed between the when I made an account and now, I'm pretty sure you're speaking from the perspective of an outsider looking in. Not from experience. And that's a problem when you're speaking objectively because you're probably not getting your facts straight.

    • @mindspunk
      @mindspunk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Intel was doing pretty much the same thing 10 years ago by paying out OEMs to only sell products with Intel chips. They were paying enormous sums of money, in the order of hundreds of millions, to companies like dell to only ship laptops and desktops with Intel chips. The EU didn't like this very much, they were dragged to court and fined 1.06 billion dollars for anti-competitive business practices.
      The only difference here is NVIDIA isn't paying them money outright, they're hush hush hinting they'll restrict their ability to sell NVIDIA chips by pinching off their supply of the NVIDIA chips they put onto the boards they sell. Remember ASUS, Gigabyte and the like don't manufacture the GPU chip itself, they put the GPU chip manufactured by NVIDIA onto their own board. As a GPU board manufacturer you'd be insane not to sell NVIDIA cards with their current market share so they are more or less being forced to join the GPP else they will take a big hit to profitability in the same way dell relied heavily on Intel's payouts to stay afloat. NVIDIA limit the number of NVIDIA cards you can sell, so you don't get as much revenue from selling cards.
      And just like Intel forcing companies to not sell AMD cpus with literal bribes, NVIDIA is forcing AMD out of the prized Aorus, ROG, etc... brands and putting them in the bargin bin by threatening companies to restrict access to NVIDIA chips which will directly impact sales and therefore lower company revenue and profits. It's a direct attack on AMD's brand image and an attempt to force AMD out of the market by strong arming companies away from selling AMD cards by abusing their market dominance.
      The GPP is just as optional as Intel's payouts were. It's optional only by technicality, but by not opting in you put yourself as a business at huge risk and disadvantage to your competitors.

      Just as an fyi the court case against intel and the time they eventually started paying those fines (still haven't payed it fully iirc) is so long that it doesn't matter to the company that is being punished. The gains overweight the downsides.

    Yup, I'm getting an AMD card when they come with 7nm Vega. I'm sick of Nvidias broken ass shadowplay producing corrupted footage (even at 50 Mbit/s) and rolling out GFE updates every 5 minutes that make me restart my game to get shadowplay working again. This was one move too far. Nvidia has a great lineup of graphics cards but I'll jump to AMD if they can offer similar features, efficiency and performance.

      Prodigy H Nvidia is constantly fucking consumers over by anti-competitive bullshit like GPP and proprietary everything. They won't use technologies like FreeSync despite being handed them on a fucking plate because of course a company with 70% market share can't afford to risk fair competition.
      AMD is obviously about money too, but knowingly harming everyone to strengthen an already disproportionate hold on the market is not okay. Stop saying it is.

They aren’t fucking me over because I’m satisfied with the performance I get for the price I pay. Your angry because they don’t give AMD a level playing field, it’s a business they’re both trying to maximize profits not feel bad for the competition and hold back for them to be able to catch up.
