  • @FiniteCS
    @FiniteCS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +276

    You forgot to mention that AMD's Zen2 CPU lineup can _finally_ do really well on CS:GO, a game that's CPU dominated which in turn made it Intel dominated (until now)!

    • @Kapin05
      @Kapin05 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I use a Ryzen 5 1300x and I still push past 60fps on CS:GO with high settings. Either CS:GO uses my GPU more than I thought it did or AMD has always been able to run CS:GO.

    • @FiniteCS
      @FiniteCS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Here's the problem: 60fps is great for most games out there, but is complete poop for CS:GO. On CS:GO, playing on anything less than ~150 is horrible, with or without a 144Hz monitor. CS:GO is a special case compared to most games out there because of CPU dependent it is (mainly from it being coded with C++) and from how having higher fps increases the smoothness even when your eye cannot register the affects of the higher fps.
      Now, that's not to say that Ryzen sucks booty when it comes to CS:GO, since I have the Ryzen 7 1700 and am getting ~400 fps and it all seems fine and dandy, but AMD has always been known to struggle when compared to Intel. I'm sure if I had the new Ryzen 3900X or a Intel i7-9700K, I'd be getting well over 700fps with my setup (maybe even well over 700fps with an Intel i7-7700K or whatever Intel had out when the Ryzen 7 1700 was released). Either way, I'm not saying Ryzen was horrible with CS:GO, just that Intel was always the go-to for CS:GO professionals and anyone super serious about playing CS:GO and having the least latency or other variables that could somehow hinder their performance.
      *tl;dr*
      Ryzen was never _bad_ for CS:GO, it was just inferior to Intel up to this point when professional play was in mind.

    • @Kapin05
      @Kapin05 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@FiniteCS okay you can't sit here and tell me 400fps ain't smooth lmao
      you can't be _that competitive_ to legitimately need _more than 400 inputs per second_

    • @FiniteCS
      @FiniteCS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      The heck, I never said anything about 400fps not being smooth. That shit is like butter to me after only being able to get 180fps and only 100-140fps on my laptop. I was just showing an example of how even older Ryzens got good fps, just probably not as good as the newer ones or older/newer Intel CPUs. I just said you need a lot more than 60fps in CS:GO for the experience to be good, and even more for it to be competitive.

    • @h33p
      @h33p 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      There is an interesting fact about (windows) CS:GO. The game is compiled using an Intel compiler which means it is optimized towards the Intel platform as much as possible, making the performance gap shrinkage of the new CPUs extremely surprising from the AMD side.

    I don't know if I agree that these will be the last cards to support RTX in any capacity. For now at least I believe AMD and Nvidia should and perhaps will focus on getting higher framerates on higher resolutions. 120Hz@4k or 240Hz@QHD are the first that come to mind. Especially now that cable standards have picked up on speed to support those things. Raytracing is a great feature that will dominate the future, but for now at least, the sacrifice in performance - and space on the card for that matter - probably isn't worth it.
    A great video though, I especially like how you always compare the two companies very objectively! Never felt like you prefered one or the other.

      @Bernard Gliff My point is that raytracing won't be able to be done efficiently enough to benefit games. Almost none of the major engines have any form of support for it yet. And that's my point exactly, there will be cheaper and cheaper graphics cards who can handle 1440p and 4k. I never disagreed with the fact that raytracing makes games look good, however I will disagree that high resolution doesn't make games look good, because it does. Raytracing is a great feature, but it's hardly worth the effort when most modern non-realtime solutions look about 70% as good with twice the FPS.

    • @0xfolling
      @0xfolling 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Bernard Gliff I was only disagreeing with the sentiment that resolution doesn't make games look better. I fully agree that raytracing has a bigger effect on the overall visual appearance. However to my mind games nowadays look more than good enough with neither 4k nor raytracing, however I would rather prefer having larger screens with higher Hertz to enable a smoother gaming experience. LowDPI looks terrible, hence I personally believe that raytracing is less of a necessity at the moment.

    Thank you for this informative video. I've been contemplating on buying a new GPU for a while, and had to really think things through after watching this video. On one hand, 5700XT is only 3/4 of 2070 Super's price, and is arguably a better purchase (cheaper and about as good, both of the cards have their own ups and downs), but on the other, 2070S supports ray tracing and more importantly works together with my G-sync monitor. I wasn't aware of Nvidia's new AA technology but seems like I won't be able to harness it anyway due to its performance issues, which means that AMD's simple sharpening option is actually more effective.
    Even though I'd REALLY love to buy 5700XT, I'm kinda sad that I have to buy the similarly-performing, more expensive 2070 Super, because it supports my monitor. I've never been a fan of Nvidia's business practices; because they own the high-end market, they can get away with ripping off customers who want great performance in the long term. That said, I was quite pleased about AMD's price juggling, and I hope that customers take advantage of this and use their money wisely now that there is a clear shift in the market prices. I also hope that the graphics card prices will be brought down for good in the future, when Intel enters the GPU market. Fingers crossed!

      You probably already know this, but NVidia now support FreeSync (I think from 1000 series up). Therefore, FreeSync works for both AMD and NVIDIA. I know that doesn't really help you at the moment (sorry), but hopefully everyone else will consider that with their next monitor purchase. Although, the monitor is probably one of the components that people replace the least.
      I don't know much about FreeSync2 and whether that's compatible with NVIDIA. Unfortunately, that could be a new feature that divides the two. Also, Nvidia FreeSync is currently only supported over displayport, which means it wont work with TV's that only have adaptive sync over HDMI (AMD does support over HDMI).

NVidia simply cannot go to 7nm without a major architecture improvements.

    the "they will cram more cu's" thing is kinda wierd. Themonetary restriction isn't how many cu's you have but how many transistors you have, its not like radeon vii had 60 cu's so next navi card will have more cu's as easily, vega vii had 13b transistors , 5700xt has 10.5b, so there's a possibility for 10 more cu's without exceeding the manufacturing cost of a vii(without the hbm2). The reason they didn't make a card with 50 cu's is because they would be bottlenecked by the memory spped and they would have to use hbm2 to make improvements, which costs, so they didn't made a bigger card, and they wont , untill they manage to overcome the bandwidth limitations, the new consoles will use 16gb of gddr6 ram both for cpu and gpu and thats because the more gddr6 packages the more the bandwidth and so they will improve the cards by using more ram(and this way without the ram bottleneck they will have more cu's and higher clocks to make use of it) but making a desktop gpu with 16gb of gddr6 makes it really expensive . in consoles thay make it work cause tehy use it as system ram too but in pc's they cant do that sooooooo we w8 and we ll see

In machine learning or other non-CUDA compute flows they are very much utilised and Vega 7 often trades blows with 2080TI. Comparing Far Cry 3 released in 2012 with Far Cry New Dawn in 2019 a full 7 years later, the graphics are only very slightly noticeably better. The most striking difference is they've turned up the contrast. But in 2012 we were still on 20nm hardware and now we are pushing 7nm. Graphics cards are physically twice the size and twice the price despite that advancement. We are butting up to physical limitations of hardware, and advancements are mostly going to come from software.

    Personally Navi is far more exciting for me. Zen 2 is a good revision - it pretty well kills off anything south of the 9900k IMO. But Navi? It's a tremendous leap over Vega - thanks to the GCN vs RDNA. And this is just comparing to Vega. Comparing to Turing? 5700 beats the 2060 by 10%~, 5700xt beats the 2060s/2070 by 10%. 5700xt is 5 - 7% slower then the radeon 7 and 1080ti and 7 - 10% slower then the 2070s. They've pretty much knocked off 3 of Nvidias cards with 2 of their own.
    Although I can't say the dammed coolers helped show that off...
    Drivers I don't mind to much, this is the most "new" we've seen in a long while so it's to be expected. Albiet AMD were on some mad drugs if they thought dropping 2 new architectures on the same date were a good idea.
    Ray tracing is something I'm fine with by the way. I'd expect that'll be the next set from AMD - and it's not like Nvidia's current offering is sustainable. It'll be whatever AMD brings that'll be that future thanks to the consoles.

      Devs go nuts with these instead of using them in minimal ways for overall improvement.

    The Radeon 5700XT is interesting because people with actually not hot fucking garbage custom cooling blocks have overclocked it to levels which match the 2080 on launch drivers. The problem with the Radeon 5700 and 5700XT is the blower and AMD's focus on crippling the best graphics cards they have ever released. They even have a firmware-level overclocking limit which had to be bypassed. Other than that, the 3900X is a fantastic start, and once optimizations are made for multi-die processes they'll be significantly better than they are now. I'm extremely optimistic of how this hardware is going to grow over the years, and my incoming 3900X/5700XT build is probably going to last me the next 5-10 years pretty reasonably. I wouldn't be surprised if a 5700XT with proper cooling grows to be on par with or surpass the 2080 Super, assuming proper overclocking.
    AMD is in an extremely good spot right now, and I am excited for how things develop as they hit the peak of their driver optimization for this generation.
