    Without having watched part two I already like this tree. I have always found trees in nature that have struggled, and survived, to be very interesting looking.
    This tree is looking like it has been beaten back, partially uprooted, and has tenaciously refused to give up.

    A very interesting video dealing with a complex tree. Lots of issues and challenges to consider. At times I found myself saying, “no” and other times, “yeah” good choice”. But, you are the owner/styler, so at the end of the day, you are the one who will live with this tree. Nice to see this challenging video and looking forward to part 2. Cheers!

    Wow, it's such a treat to see you do some advanced styling work! I enjoy that in most of your videos your process is so focused on the basics, the core repotting pruning cycle... since that's the bread and butter of improving the trees. But it's fun see how you approach naturalism in a very complex styling on a tree that has grown far outside of the "ideal forms".

    Nigel, you reference Lake Superior's North Shore. Have you ever seen Gooseberry Falls? The white cedars there are incredible for a few reasons. One is that they grow on basalt bedrock and their roots are exposed by erosion and foot traffic. This tree reminds me of those trees in its character.

    I remember hiking with my brother in the Rockies. We came upon a rise towards a location that was supposed to have a lake. As we broke the ridge the lake could be seen, but so was this lovely pine that was hit by lightning. It was split in half half was dead and the other half gave the thunder and lightning a big FU.

    I love these cedars. Got married near invermere BC this summer, went looking for a red cedar (seen some 100km to the north last year) but did not find one sadly... Picked up 2 junipers (one I don't know if it will survive, been downhill since 😣 but we shall see) and 2 different conifers (not sure species, one has real short needles the other has 2.5" needles)
    Still, want a cedar.... Perhaps next trip to bc

    • @dk2614
      @dk2614 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This Thuja has a common name of Eastern White Cedar, although it is not a true cedar it is an Arbhorvitae. Red Cedar is not a true Cedar either it is actually a juniper. Juniperous virginiana.

    • @dk2614
      @dk2614 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wanted to say also there is a Western white cedar, Thuja plicatum it is a giant Arbhorvitae from the Rockies. Most common names for plants were made by average people who had no botanical training hence the common names are in reality approximations when referencing cedars and what not.

      There were many ways to tackle this tree, this video shows our thoughts about our decisions and the end result. It is just the beginning for the tree and will require much work in the future. A professional bonsai artist would have to go through the exact same process, and I'm sure every person would have a different outcome. That is what makes art and individual expression. There is no right or wrong.

    Honestly in my eyes you ruined a tree that had a lot more potential that the end results shows. I would have prefered to make it a wind swept style, removing the lower branches, bending the tip over and some branches onto the right side. The use of wire would have solve a lot of problems, so you wouldn't have to cut away all of the branches. No it really looks like a a stick and because you removed so much foliage it will take some time to recover from that. For the next time you create deadwood, you should not begin to carve it like the tip of a spear. Break the branch with the tongs, so it looks more natural. Sorry for my honesty but this time my heart bled and I always thought, just wire and bend... I understand the clip and grow on deciduous trees, but not on conifers. Greetings!
