Such a good year, Steve. A pivotal one for me, both personally/career-wise and in musical discovery - really getting back into new music after a dip-out during the eighties! I looked at my top 10 1994 a while back and came up with these (mix of vinyl and CD)... 1. Portishead - Dummy 2. Pink Floyd - The Division Bell 3. Bark Psychosis - Hex 4. Jeff Buckley - Grace 5. Marillion - Brave 6. Porcupine Tree - The Sky Moves Sideways 7. Blur - Parklife 8. Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman 9. Oasis - Definitely Maybe 10. Manic Street Preachers - The Holy Bible
I don’t know how I missed Division Bell from PF, pretty sure I have that. There is that Porcupine Tree that I still have not tried, one of these days Andy
Glad to hear my Soundgarden records are pricey 😊. I have several of your choices on CD gleaned from the youngsters at the flea market 🎉. That sled riding looked like so much fun. Very happy you're reliving those days.
Greg as you know, grandkids give us a reason to be kids again as long as not too much bending and sitting in the floor is involved lol. I did get the Soundgarden today, it popped back up on Amazon.
Every time I see one of your ranking videos, it reminds me that I have yet to do many of them. But, Sugar will be on my list for 94! The rest are great choices, but I am reminded that I have very few LPs from this year 😔
Brian, it has been tough doing these videos due to lack of product. Sometimes it gets me to go by a few albums that I loved in that year. Looking at 95 I think I have even fewer albums. The music from the 90s was so much fun
Steve, good list for this year, and yes, some really catchy music. Vitalogy is the only vinyl that I have from your list and a few CDs; Cranberries, Green Day, Kyuss, Soundgarden, Sugar. The Johnny Cash is a cassette. When I discovered Kyuss, I immediately went over to my BMG (or was it Columbia?) account and ordered all of the Kyuss titles that I could find. Thanks, Chris
Chris had had several 100 CDs from that year, I do miss that CD collection but to be honest they never got played, just too many. The 90s had some great music, I just don’t hear it talked about. These 90s rankings are my least watched videos but I love digging into those albums again
Great list! I played hacky sack with Weezer on top of the Pontiac parking garage. The Sweater song was just starting to get heavy rotation. Brian Bell told me he was sick of playing that song, even back then. It was interesting to see them change with all the success. Every few months they would come through Harmony House and play in stores. Each time the crowds got bigger and bigger. The old bass player Matt Sharp always would look for Björk maxi-singles. He had a huge collection of them. 1994 was a great time for music!
Wow, those are some fantastic memories. Isn’t it amazing you saw them when they were doing record stores and now look at them. That is wild mild. You definitely have strong memories surrounding Weezer. 90s had so much good music, I just have less and less of it as I move forward. What I like about doing this is it gets me listening to that music again
One of my favorite years for music ever. I’ll be doing my favorite 30 from 1994 soon. There will be no Oasis. 😬 It’s not a bad album though! Good stuff, Steve. Love your number 1. Cheers! ✌🏻
I figured you would approve of #1. Jon, people,or at least channels I watch, never talk about the amazing music of the 90s. So much good stuff came out then. Wow, 30 favorite albums from 94. I did a ranking of UK top 25 bands, the Oasis and Blur camos really watched that video and raked me over the coals. That and along with not ranking The Kinks. 100s of comments, it was pretty funny.
Good picks Pearl jam/ I only have 3 in my bag Pink Floyd/The Division Bell Stones/Voodoo Lodge Portishead/Dummy..good album..Even Robert Plant likes them Listen,I hope we don't become rivals on Superbowl Sunday /I am true Eagles fan Cheers
Interesting picks, sir...not much into most of them, but I do like a few of them...I'll let you figure out which ones I might be a fan of, LOL! Cheers!
Hi Steve - That Kyuss record is really underrated. I would describe it as being phenomenal ! Jeff Buckley , Blur , Portishead , Hole & Kyuss were my Top 5 that year. New York Rangers won the Stanley Cup 🏆.
David, I had the Buckley on CD, great voice but I just could not get into it. I do need more Kyuss, heck of a great band that doesnt get talked about much.
Mike, Diamanda Gallas not only doesn't make my list, she doesn't even make it into my house...she scares me! Blues For The Red Sun was the first Kyuss I heard & it was mind melting moment. I was very glad to see those Lush albums reissued. Hip shaker maker shaker WTF? 🤣 I was on team Blur, but when I hear Oasis it makes me feel nostalgic. Johnny Cash would have to be one of the most impressive music comebacks of all time. He was definitely a "whatever happened to him" bloke at that point in time. I absolutely love Husker Du, but I wish the rhythm section was recorded with as much punch as those Sugar records. Dean of Luna was originally from NZ so it was no surprise he had a connection with Justin Harwood of the Chills. That Beastie's is the best one for sure. I have grown to like Weezer less and less. Their first two records were great, but I honestly rarely pull them out anymore. I haven't been a fan of their stuff that came out since those two. Out of all of the bands on your list I think they sound the most stuck in 1994. A lot of the other stuff to me Mike seems timeless.1994 was a sad bastard year. Cheers...Mike
I got roped into that Sad Bastard tag, I need to figure that out since all my albums are happy. 94 was another wonderful year in music. I wish I had more of the music in vinyl, so hard to come by and it’s not easy on the pocketbook Mike. I’m just going to toss this out there Mike, I get a feeling you’re not all in on Weezer? I wasn’t in 94 but they have grown on me through the years. I think if you sat down and had a beer with Diamanda you would find her to be a soft and sweet lady. There is still time to make this happen, I don’t think she is dead yet
I was always more Blur than Oasis back in the nineties, but in retrospect I think Oasis came out on top and their best stuff has lasted better. I've never heard Sugar or Kyuss. Believe it or not the only album in your top 10 I owned back in 1994 was Park Life, though in subsequent years I got the Weezer. The record that meant the most to me in '94 was in your runners up, Mellow Gold. Great video Steve.
Go grab Sugar - Copper Blue now! You missed out first time round, I'll forgive you, but this album is one of the best.. slap it on, go for a long drive
Sugar and Kyushu really rocked hard, both got played a lot especially Sugar but I’m a big Husker Du fan. I liked Loser a lot but when I listened to it again it just wasn’t as strong as his future albums. As I proceed forward with this I have less and less albums, it was the era of CDs in the US sadly
I’ve never heard that Blur album. I bought their first album and was a bit disappointed. There’s No Other Way is great but I can’t remember anything else on it. Song #2 is their only other song I remember. Talk about never heard. I’ve never listened to any Husker Du after Zen Arcade, any Sugar, or any Bob Mould albums. Great choices at 1 and 2.
Richie, Sugar was a great hard rock band, basically it was Husker Du part 2, I really loved that rendition. I’m a huge Mould fan so I got all those box sets. That Beastie Boys always pumps me up, they got so many great hooks on that album. Great year for music
Turn It Upside Down- Spin Doctors Weezer- Weezer Morrissey- Vauxhall And I Dinosaur Jr- Without A Sound Merle Haggard-1994 Green Day- Dookie There’s two albums not actually released in 1994 but were everywhere in 1994- New Miserable Experience(1992) by Gin Blossoms and August And Everything After(1993) by Counting Crows.
It's so hard to pick out a top 12 when certain years have so many great releases. Portishead is definitely one of my top picks for that year. Hoping that one comes in for Christmas, but it had to be ordered overseas which I thought was weird, so it probably won't get here. Kyuss is great! Wow I never realized '94 had so many great sad bastards. I've tried time and time again to like Oasis, but they just don't click for me. They should, I agree, but they just don't. Damon Albam from Blur is quite the amazing and eclectic musician, isn't he. I mean, you got all of the variety on the Blur albums and then you have the funk/rap/experimental sounds of Gorillaz. He's one of those guys that can just do anything and do it well. Just like Kristofer Rigg from Ulver. Cash always did have a way of making songs his own. Love his covers and I love those American recordings just like you do. Yep, Beastie Boys have to be on the list! Great bunch of albums, kind of leans in that power pop direction, but we all love that! I know I do!
Mike, I did not like Oasis until many years later when I really began to listening how hard they rocked. The fun part of doing these videos is going back and listening to all that music again. You suddenly hear things that you may have missed. 90s was filled with great music that I think often gets overlooked due to the lack of vinyl
You've got to include Spin the Black Circle. It's one of those songs you just can't forget. Three incredible tracks in a row. Parklife has such a diverse range of musical styles. It'll always feel fresh. I love that album. There's not a bad title in Blurs entire catalog. My favorite Beastie Boys album ( maybe)🤔 . Blue album is definitely my favorite Weezer album, although Pinkerton is a close second.
Mark, I only have a couple Blur albums but I do really like them. Parklife was just so exciting when I came out, I was a huge fan but I never really kept up with the group. I have never listened to Pinkerton but many consider it to be their best album, I need to try it one of these days I guess
Steve, 1994 is a great year. I dig Portishead but didn’t have it in 94. Actually probably about six years or so. Fuckin Kyuss, man. Yea excellent choice. I was all over that PJ in 94. Dookie was fun for sure. Beastie is the best. Wow didn’t expect Weezer. Good list. Peace ☮️ Namaste 🙏 the Zonkman
I knew Kyuss would excite the Zonkman! That has your name all over it I got into Weezer late. I had their CDs but just never played them a lot until a few years ago. They really could rock hard
"Re" by Cafe Tacuba gets slept on because it's in Spanish, but it's one of the best albums from 1994. It was only released on vinyl in Colombia, and a few spots here and there after ward, some of them boots, some of them legit, but they are releasing an official anniversary edition. As of now you can get the anniversary edition on Discogs for around $125, but they are going to sell it on their website for, if I remember correctly, around $30. Listen to it. CD, steam it, whatever.
I love music from South America. Columbia and Peru produced some outstanding music. I checked them out. Love el Borrego. There is a reissue from Argentina that has one for sale for $40,000. I kid you not, holy smokes. Originals , forget about it. I will check out their web site. The album sounds great
ITs time you got with it. I am into modern technology and am into 78s. At the hop, Charles Penrose and a selection of Bill Haley. These duds know where its at man. See you later alligator. Beats all that 30s Bluenote jazz crap. One two three o'clock.
@@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Bluenote is the only record label that doesn't put a hole in the middle of their records as nobody ever plays them. I have some Bluenote ads thank you.
lol, you of course would be the one to spit that immediately! I got that from a record store in Colorado Springs. I was excited to see that shirt there I wonder if Black Flag knows they used their original artwork ?
Another great list, Steve. Always interesting, eclectic and unpredictable.
Thank you for taking time to watch. Yeah my listening habits tend to run all over the place but I really liked the music of the 90s.
Great video!
Thank you Tyler, I appreciate you taking the time to watch
i've definitely heard of some of those bands, very cool, steve!
Thanks David, once in awhile I show bands most people know lol
