    Steve, I appreciate the time and effort it took to make this list. I know everyone has their own taste in music, but I don’t understand The Zombies not being on this list. They were among the most original, innovative groups of that era. Until Rod Argent had his recent stroke, they still sounded amazing.
    You talk about influence. The Zombies influenced Oasis, The Jam, Blur, Squeeze, and American bands like The Killers. They were fantastic, as were The Kinks, another puzzling omission.

    • @stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147

      This was so hard to do Josh just do to the extreme amount of bands that came out of the UK. Some great points about The Zombies. I knew I would get the backlash on The Kinks, I just never could get totally into them but I have tried. That is where the subjective part comes in

There's something odd going on with this video, when i start watching or after the commercial i have a lot of trouble getting it started. Have to admire people that can put together best of lists, so much fun to view. I can't, no matter how simple the task. Have hard time ranking albums from the same band or songs from an album. Fun video, great bands. People will always be influenced by what they are really into. Fair play, Steve.. at the end of the day, it is, of course, completely subjective. I think 'entry points' to bands often shape how highly regarded they are to us all.
      The Smiths formed my early teenage years listening. They really spoke to me and are probably very middle of the road in my music taste. The Stone Roses came at the perfect time to combat my loss of The Smiths splitting up.
      I agree that Radiohead can be a hard listen to some, so I can see why you haven't included them.
      Keep making the vids, it is always great to hear passionate opinions.
      Ps, can you (or anyone else) help settle an argument between friends.. is Feeder - Comfort in Sound, any good?

  • @ijeff2005
    @ijeff2005 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Of course none of us will have a matching list. Virtually impossible. My list would have at least half of Steve's picks. My main criticism of his list is it suffers from a recency bias. If I did a list it would probably have a bias towards older bands. I can't imagine not having the Kinks of any such list. I was also surprised it didn't include some great 70's bands like Deep Purple, Yes, Mott the Hoople, Traffic and Moody Blues. I'd probably exceed the 25 band limitation which makes it even harder. Still, some great picks on Steve's list and some that really look like sleeper picks like Wire, Waterboys and Stone Roses. Also, XTC Lemon and Oranges is a great album from a prolific band that never seems to get the respect they deserve.

    Recently I heard some older gentlemen talking about the music that was meaningful to them when they were growing up and whether their children still liked it. The Beatles sometimes came up when the kids sang together, but the Stones hardly played a role anymore. The Police, on the other hand, were a band that still appealed. One of the gentlemen had bought the latest album by the Stones with some embarrassment, because he found it a bit too obvious and there were only a few songs that stood out to him.

    Music wise, I am fortunate enough to have hit my teens near the start of the 80's, have a mother that 'stole' my records, to play them LOUD, and showed me why by introducing me to the Blues Rock, garage and psychedelic of her youth which she was hearing echoes of in my developing taste (when you listen, there is a LOT of Psychedelic in Goth), it was for music, the UK was the perfect time, the perfect place, even if the charts were rubbish, there was always something new, interesting and good coming out. I'd struggle to get such a list down to 25 bands active in just the 80's. Respect for XTC, World Party, The Waterboys making your list, though I am looking over the top of my spectacles at you for omitting Talk Talk. 😉

      Jon, I have really tried to get into Talk Talk and just have not figured them out. I was in my 20s in the 80s and it’s my favorite decade. US had College Rock, it was not mainstream, I love that music. Also UK was pushing out tremendous music in so many new genres. To me it was a magical decade.

      @@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 I'd say that "Its my Life" and "The Colour of Spring" are the most accessible albums. Everything after is only really for the converted and the debut while good was a band finding its feet and even chasing a couple of trends. Here in the UK we had a whole league of artists that would have a top 40 hit (or near miss that still got a good amount of airplay) per album and the albums would get very good reviews and go silver within a year of release. Most featured on the US Collage Rock circuit as well. World Party, XTC and others you mentioned were among them. For some reason it all got killed off mid 90's because making an OK living for all involved and doing critically acclaimed stuff just wasn't big enough for the labels. One of those that led this cull was Simon Cowell (yes that one) so my distaste for him goes way back.
      John Peel may be a legend but he was on too late for me (and on school nights), his shows didn't start till midnight! But for me, The Annie Nightingale request show on right after the Sunday new chart rundown on Radio 1 was my main gateway to the weird and wonderful. Oh and Tommy Vance for rock and metal.

    What would be interesting video is to see the vinyl channels people but together list of the greatest non-English speaking countries solo artist/bands. Not saying that the songs must be with non-English lyrics, but not from countries were the English is the main language. It would be very interesting to see such lists and would they be similar from a person to person or would there be a lot of a difference. Because it seems that in every country people listen to their native bands (and some from their neighboring countries) and then just music from UK/USA/ and some from other English speaking countries. And you mainly get to know music from other countries if the artist breaks through to the UK/USA market. So viewing lists from outside the "english" countries would possible bring new music to many viewers or the list would just be the usual suspects (the big break through artist in UK/USA) and that would also be interesting to know.

    Here's a controversial one: The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Obviously their main creative force was not of UK origin and did go on to be creative and influential in other 'vehicles' based outside the UK. However the band that first took him to prominence and helped him produce 3 albums in its circa 2 year existence was UK recruited, managed and produced, 2/3rds of UK origin and, most pertinently, was very much born in and from out of the pervading London culture (even if the latter itself reflected significant transatlantic influence). I suppose whether you can accept JHE as being from the UK is linked to whether you regard CSN, or indeed CSN&Y, as American ; )

    Interesting subjective list that you made the case well for and which had only one omission which is verging on the criminal - if this wasn’t just a bit of fun which of course it is! Who? The Kinks obviously! They and The Jam and should have been included considering some of the bands who did make it (I’m thinking in particular of the Brit pop bands who were poor copies of them and The Beatles). The Kinks also should have been in because not only did they arguably produce the finest pop song of all time (Waterloo Sunset) they also invented both Heavy Rock/metal and punk three years earlier with ‘You Really Got Me. So that’s three reasons! Also Gang of Four are worth considering too while both The Clash and Beatles should have been higher and that the Stones are still going is a reason why they shouldn’t even be in the top 25 in my opinion. What an embarrassment they have become! But I really enjoyed the video!

    Hi Steve. The name 'Joy Division' comes from the German concentration camps in World War II - it was what they called the brothels they had in the camps to reward the inmates' good behaviour. Great list, a few there that I considered for both of my videos. Ironically, I'd put the Stones under the Beatles because they're still going.

    • @gab99
      @gab99 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So long as the inmates were non-Jewish they could use the brothel (to avoid racial mixing of course) and the women forced to work in the brothels came from other concentration camps. I have never quite understood why a band would select such a thing for their name.

      @@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 Though the jewish women forced into prostitution were really called The Joy Division, the band actually took their name from a novel. The name Joy Division was taken from a brothel containing Jewish women forced into sexual labour by Nazi concentration camp officers in the novel House of Dolls by camp survivor Ka-Tzetnik 135633. They also reference the book in one of their songs.
      I do think it was for shock value, a bit like the Pistols wearing Swastikas or other punk bands wearing nazi parafenelia. It was called 'Nazi Chic', to shock or break taboos, not to genuinely support Nazism.

    • @RiverOfBlacklights
      @RiverOfBlacklights หลายเดือนก่อน

      The band simply thought the name sounded good and cool. They were briefly called Stiff Kittens at the very start, then they changed the name to Warsaw and then, finally settled on Joy Division. They were kids that grew up surrounded by WW II memorabilia, with relatives who lived through that time and regularly heard war stories, they saw various war-torn areas that never got rebuilt and were demolished. So the war and it's after effects was part of their growing up. It was right at their doorstep.
      It was a different time. They lived a different reality to what we live now. Nowadays, everything is sterilized, sanitized and scrutinized so as to not offend those with "sensitive sensibilities". There was none of that back then. People lived reality as it was - real. They didn't enclose themselves in honogenized, pasteurized "safe space bubbles". Many wrongfully associated the band with fascist groups not just for the name but, for their clothing as well but, they had nothing to do with that at all...

    Tricky one this..i guess it all depends what angle your taste is coming from, so ultimately subjective.
    You picked a good overview of great bands from different genres Steve.
    30+ years later and i still don't get the Stone Roses.
    I saw Tears For Fears on the Seeds of Love tour, it was the last time i ever went to the NEC in Birmingham ( and large concert venues period)..
    I think Blur were more influenced by UK 60s bands like the Kinks.
    Joy Division i appreciate more than enjoy.
    Waterboys were fantastic live, i saw them at Glastonbury in 1990.
    My brother loves Wire..that debut album was really interesting.
    The less said about Oasis the better..
    Spaceman 3 is definitely a sonic experience, i probably preferred Spiritualised.
    Karl Wallanger ( RIP)..very clever arranger and songwriter..better than most acts from that era and highly underrated.
    Ah, love me some Tull..for me anything up until the early 80s is my sweet spot.. Ian Anderson is a terrific acoustic guitar player, i wish he still plays it when he performs).
    XTC are a great band, perfect blend of 60s psychedelia and new wave and folk..yet totally original.
    I'm not a metal fan, but i can't deny Black Sabbath produced some stellar work in the early 70s.
    ' Never Mind...is so nostalgic for me, my mate blasting it on a cassette on his dads' equipment and then the tape got chewed..the destruction seemed apt for the music...
    Led Zep III is my favourite because it's quite acoustic.
    I think Floyd up to Animals i really enjoy..Richard Wright for one of the most underrated songwriters.
    Beatles and Stones, i guess influence wise they have to be top 2.
    I'll always prefer them over the Stones.
    Great effort 👌.

      Yeah, I only had 25 to pick, I do struggle with Queen some. Last year I did a whole video about me and Queen. Some of their music I love and some I just don’t enjoy. They are a great band that many people truly enjoy Kenneth

    Mike, I must suffer from the same mental instability because I thought you were spot on with your US picks. I agree Stone Roses need to be shown & shown instead of Tears For Fears😂 The Priest!! I never would've picked that coming from the punk rock kid. I love how Rob Halford convinced straight white America to dress like gay leather bondage boys. He's a genius! Nice one with Wire Mike. GBV take the cake with release output for sure. Buzzcocks...yep that is a fun name to say & fun to listen to as well. What are you talking about Mike? I often hum and even whistle Spaceman 3 tunes all the time. They are the earworm band. The Tull you old proghead! Do you think the Cure will make a lot of lists now that they've released a pretty fine new album? Wow a total classic rock ending Mike. I'm glad you put someone before the someone that everyone else would put first. Always swimming upstream 👍Cheers...Mike

      lol Mike, yeah, I figured everyone would put the Beatles first but they couldn’t get along and the Stones have made so many great albums. Yeah, this was tough to do but I figured we needed some newer groups Mike,mit can’t all be dinosaurs being represented. I would love to hear you humming to Spacemen 3. You just don’t see their songs in Karakoe bars. Tull is about heavy metal Mike, they got a Grammy for a reason!

      @@stevecarlsonvinylcommunity9147 😂Yes true I forgot the Tull won a metal Grammy. It's always been an awards show that has it's finger on the pulse.

    Nice list. Mine would skew more prog, hard rock and metal. I have given up on the Huskers this season. I haven't watched the last 3 games and probably won't watch again this year. They aren't worth it.

      Heart break after heartbreak. Last two games are not in our favor. WI played Oregon hard. I wonder how many people will leave the team to try to find a winning team ? Very frustrating. At least my Lions look good

    Can’t get onboard with the Stones being No 1 over the Beatles. Just because they stayed together longer ? Kinks is also a major omission.

      Tony, I knew omitting the Kinks would get people questioning my sanity along with the Stones. I spent 5 days looking at all huge list of groups and finally said what the hell and ranked them on my feelings that day. Subjective but a lot of fun to do and a great way to create dialogue.
