Very good list, does not matter if we agree on your picks or not. Two albums that blew me away from that year are Lost in the Dream by The War on Drugs and the self-titled Warpaint album. Lydia Loveless sounds like the kind of artist I would love, so I am surely going to check her out. I bought that Tune-Yards album last year, and I am still trying to get into it, but I know that once I do, I will get hooked. Anyways, thanks for another great post, and happy holidays to you and your loved ones

Lost in the Dream would still be in my Top 20. I had it on the shelf behind me, but my ugly mug was covering it up. I loved that album back then and listened to it so much. Ten years removed, it kind of sounds trendy. Also, Live Drugs almost ruined all the studio output for me. What a great live recording! Truly captures the band in my opinion. That Warpaint album is really good. Their best in my opinion. Tune-Yards can take a bit to get into, but don't feel like you have to work too hard at it. It's totally okay if they don't click. Thanks for hanging! Cheers! ✌

Thank you for the journey and the struggle in narrowing this list down to 10, and applying astute critical thinking to them to see that they still hold their own. I'm liking this 10/20/30 year retrospective, am thinking it will help put the great music of this year into some context, perhaps even lineage. We had wildly different 2014s, though i don't think i could fill a top 10. Metamodern Sounds would be right up there. Spent my birthday trip listening to it! And to think on my first listen 5 years ago i thought his twang was 'a bit full on'😂🤠love your work sir, bring on 2004!

Well, Dean. The 20 and the 30 won’t be happening before the end of this year. Maybe I’ll still post them anyway. Two great years for music, so worth discussing. Surprised I wasn’t killed more in the comment section for not having The War On Drugs in my 10 faves. I’ll have your aversion to twang eliminated by the end of 2025! 😂😎 Cheers, Dean! ✌🏻

My partner got me into Sylvan Esso some. Saw them at red rocks and while I felt like the venue didn’t really worked for their type of music, they pulled it off somehow. Amazing how just two people can keep 9000 people entertained. Nice list!

That Real Estate we listened to a ton. In fact it's the first album that my son really latched on to at the age of 3, so that's why it's the only Real Estate album I've kept. Holds up well! For my money I'll go with Grouper's "Ruins", s/t album by Morgan Delt and "Sunbathing Animal" by Parquet Courts.

Hi Jon - What I remember most about 2014 musically was finding that U2 album on my phone. Radiohead never forced themselves on you U2 did. Saudade by Thievery Corporation was my AOTY. Like the plastic bag blowing in the wind opening. I'm convinced that 3 minute scene in American Beauty is why it won 8 Academy Awards. People get very passionate about their dislike of the inanimate object but they miss the point 👉 .. In my opinion .. & as The Dude says " Well , That's Just Like Your Opinion Man "

Yikes! A look at my albums from 2014 shows lots of reissues, but few new releases. That said, Busman's Holiday's debut A Long Goodbye and Andrew Bird's album of Handsome Family covers are both firm favourites of mine today.
I'm not sure you should be using the word Bratty to describe something from 2014, it sounds too 2024.

It’s just proof, Brat™️ existed long before Charli XCX. 😎 This comment reminds me that I need to finish watching that best music of the 21st Century video from you and John. Probably could count on one hand the amount of albums you two picked from 2010 on. 😂 I’m a huge Andrew Bird fan, but I’ve never been one for covers/tribute albums all that much. That one was good though. Cheers, Hedley ✌🏻

As usual you take a VC tradition and totally warp it. It’s had to take a list from 2014 serious she there is no Ariana Grande. I really don’t get that. Also RSD did release a Doors album. I had that Lotus album, but you know…most of 2014 disappeared. Tinarwen was one of my favorite albums and that is one of my favorite Spoon albums.
