    Another excellent entry to the RGB series. The Genesis really does output mind-blowingly good RGB, it's the biggest reason I wanted a Framemeister!

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Lazy Game Reviews [Try4ce] And the Framemeister is the biggest reason I wanted a Genesis! OK, that's a bit shallow, the real reason I wanted a Genesis was to play the "lost" Contra and Castlevania games, Hard Corps and Bloodlines. Totally worth it, and I've since discovered a lot more on the Genesis that's to my taste than I expected! But with the Framemeister giving me a way to play the Genesis without resorting to composite video was the last push I needed to finally buy the system. Coury, on the other hand, is the life-long Sega kid.

  • @BladeBlur
    @BladeBlur 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I remember when I saw the original RGB101 and 202 video and saw how inferior the picture quality of the Wii\WiiU emulation compared to the NES itself, but with the Genesis it's surprisingly VERY close. In fact I do like how vibrant the colors look in some of the games like Ristar, though that might be just Sonic's UGC. Also I use a Model 1 Genesis (due to hearing the differences in Audio quality) and Model 2 CD (Due to reliability and not having to use the menu to eject the disc). All in all, the Genesis is my favorite game system of all time, and it holds a near and dear place in my heart.
    Great video as always guys!

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** [Try4ce] The big difference in Genesis emulation releases seems to be who developed it... Coury noted the developer in our ending comparisons. M2 is famous for treating the original material with more care and respect than a lot of other developers! They also handled the 3D Sega ports for the 3DS, as well as the better Wii U emulators, like GBA.

    • @RedArremer
      @RedArremer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** The saturation and brightness can always be increased in the RGB side. I think a lot of the "it looks pretty close" moments in the comparisons wouldn't be that close if brightness and saturation were set to the same levels. Even with the current settings, I could still see more detail in the RGB side.

    I used to take what you guys said as gospel but I realised you take the quest to take video to the most high end extremes and after spending a mint following your advice I cant say the results really were worth the price and time. Now my rig is just composite video on an old TV, a genesis and a saturn and honestly it does the trick.

  • @karnovjunior

    Great video but there is one thing you forgot to point out. While it is very nice Genesis/MD/Sega CD/32X has native RGB output there are unfortunately plenty of games on the system like the Sonic series, Streets of Rage 2&3, Shinobi III, Castlevania Bloodlines, Socket, Toy Story, Beyond Oasis, Earthworm Jim, Vectorman, Comix Zone which use dithering effects to create transparencies and extra colors via RF or composite signals. So if you want to see these effects come into play in the games I mentioned we got no choice but play on RF or composite or else we will see raw vertical lines or checker board patterns :(

    Thanks for this useful info! I use my 60hz modded PAL Mega Drive 1 on a Sony Trinitron CRT with an RGB SCART cable, and it looks amazing. It doesn't look as pretty on a large Samsung HDTV without an external scaler, as when objects move, they will blur. The 'jailbar' effect is also quite noticable, but I don't think it is worth modifying my console even more.

    I’ve got an interesting set up for my mega drive, Input 1 on my TV has RGB from my retro consoles, and Input 2 RF through my VCR. So I often find it fun to switch between RGB and RF to see the difference, it’s really interesting. It’s also cool to have it linked up so if I do something amazing like beat a game I can record my victory to tape and replay them later.

    I adore this series. I got into RGB gaming about a year before these videos started. I really wish I had them when I started out and I really hope they're helping people experience a new level of retro love. As I type this I'm madly refreshing the tracking # for my Analogue NT. I can't wait to experience NES/Famicom in RGB/HDMI. Until it gets here (thursday!), I'll continue to enjoy my Wonder Mega in all its glory ;)

      +InnovaX5 [Coury] The most basic idea of these were to make videos on the subject we wished existed when we started. Easy to understand but fun to watch and getting as deep as needed.
      We are planning on doing "point" updates for videos if new tech comes out (ex. "RGB202.1"). The Analogue Nt is something we'd love to get our hands on, and that would be a good impetus for us to do an update video.

  • @Epsilonsama
    @Epsilonsama 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Important thing with RGB on the Genesis. Due to the Genesis lack of transparency support if you go the RGB route you will gain picture clarity but lose transparency hacks the developers did using dithering. Things like the waterfalls in Sonic games and the lightbulbs in SoR 2 are big examples.

  • @gpturismo
    @gpturismo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your Scart cable affiliate makes absolutely the best cables, I think I have 4 cables for my NON-TMSS Genesis, Japan Only MD, Genesis2/SegaCD2/32x (with Mega Amp to make it sound good,) and just a Genesis 2 (with CCAM, prefer Sega CD.) The audio is noticeably better between those with good sound processors and poor ones. I recommend everyone look at Retro RGB.
    As for jailbars, I mainly bought a 32x just for a pass through to make the scart output cleaner.

    Good video. I do have to make a minor clarification. Early releases of the Xeye lacked the multi a/v port that was later added.
    I cant determine which month of release this took place but I personally have one mfg in March 94 that is missing that port. I know of a few who have ones with mfg dates of June 94 and older that do have the port.
    I also shared this in Sega Collectors on FB. Well done.

    I think you should have mentioned the partial motherboard model 2, or board revisions VA3 and VA4. They have good audio just like the early model ones, and especially the VA4, have better video quality, it's so much better that composite looks better with the VA4 than on an earlier Genesis.

    Wow, I remember saving my money and buying a mega drive cd for 600 bucks. I also had to cut two jumpers in my genesis in order to get it to work. I was just a kid

      Nah, they only became common in the mid 90s. I remember all my TVs never had RGB so I had to ask my mom to specifically buy an expensive one for xmas just for RGB. That was around '93 or '94.

    You can also mod genesis model 1 and 2 for much better composite. I do it always when I mod S-video and region switch.

    A side note along these same lines is that the Sega 32X actually has a vastly improved composite video encoder over the Genesis consoles. It's still far inferior to RGB of course, but back in the day before RGB was feasible in the US, the 32X was your best shot of getting a quality signal, and in some cases I've heard it fixed jailbar and rainbow artifacts. :)

    • @mylifeingaming
      @mylifeingaming  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      SuperDerek RPG Reviews [Coury] One other person said the same - I'd heard that it got rid of jailbars, but all of the captures I did (not the still Sonic image) were via a 32X on a Genesis 1. I actually even did straight capture from the Genesis as well and still got the same level of jailbars. I'll definitely have to do some more research - I mean it makes total sense. I didn't try to capture just straight composite with the 32X though since the segment was so short, but thats another great point.
      When we eventually get to the point updates to these episodes, I'll definitely be sure to test and address all that.

      ***** Oh cool! Well I just figured you guys didn't mention it since the video is about getting the BEST picture, not the second best picture from your Genesis. ;) Great video as always though guys. :)

      ***** Yes, using a 32X and it's composite output gets rid of the rainbow bars that many normal Genesis units have. It also makes dithering much more clear. But to be honest, I can spot dithering a mile away even with an RF connection.

    Great video...the Genesis can display far more colors on screen than 61. With clever tricks, the Genesis can reach over 100 colors on screen at once. Games that do this- Virtua Racing, Eternal Campions, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Sonic & Knuckles come to mind. I believe Streets of Rage 2 and 3 also display far more colors although I could be wrong.

    Excellent video, I ended up doing a lot of research on the Sega-16 forums as to the best model to go for before importing my Japanese Mega Drive model 1 to the UK (so I didn't run into the stuttering issues modded PAL systems will exhibit on an LCD). I also ended up grabbing one of the packapunch RGB scart cables from www.retrogamingcables.co.uk/packapunch-range

    In Britain the computer company Amstrad made a Mega Drive/PC combo called the Mega PC. Not sure about the actual quality but it outputs RGB with a VGA connector. Problem is that's it kinda rare because the PC section was really underpowered so nowadays it's really expensive.

    I have noticed that the Genesis has better composite video if playing through a 32x. From what I understand, the 32x has a better RGB to composite chip.

      [Coury] I've always said it like EX Eye but assumed I was always wrong and thought that the way I said it was correct due to the apostrophe.
      Either way, it wouldn't be the first time that same situation has happened in a video I've done. I always say it one way but always assumed it was wrong - so I say it how i think it's supposed to be said for the video, then find out I've been saying it right the whole time.

    The only thing I would change on the genesis would be double the on screen colors, one more sprite layer and add an extra PCM chip. I would not want to risk the integraty of the Music on the system as it is already excellent.

    I didn't notice any comments on this, but forgive me if this has already been brought to your attention: The Wondermega consoles (Sega model 1, Victor model 1, and Victor model 2) were only equipped with a dedicated RF, RCA composite, and S-video outputs, out of the box. They require modification for RGB, but the video encoder chip has the RGB video lines available.
    I believe there are also some X'eye revisions that lack the model 2 Genesis' A/V out, therefore requiring modification for RGB output.

    I just developed new Framemeister profiles that will completely mask the extraneous colored borders on all sides as well as cover up the junk pixels for 4x integer-based scaling. I'll be uploading the new profiles to my web site tomorrow after I do some measurements to make sure the pixel aspect ratio is perfect in them.

    • @RedArremer
      @RedArremer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Profiles streamlined and ready for download! All colored bordering for both 4x and 5x profiles is 100% completely removed. The package can be downloaded at the bottom of my Framemeister page here: www.firebrandx.com/pixelpurist.html

      ***** Indeed! I will say that Artemio's 240p Test Suit was a MAJOR help. His grid test patterns for both 320 and 256 and the ability to turn on colored borders in them made alignment a LOT less of a headache. Then his scrolling vertical grid allowed me to dial in the zoom settings until they were perfectly scaled to 4x.

    The Victor WonderMega and JVC X'eye have Far superior Audio Chips than the MegaDrive or Mega-CD. Combining one of these two systems with a Sega 32x, an Everdrive, and RGB out you get MegaDrive/Mega-CD/32x/and MasterSystem all in one console with superior Audio and Video to any model of Genesis.

    Been keeping my eye on those HD Retrovision cables for my Mega Drive 2. I use a Retron 5 for recording stuff on my channel but would be nice to hook up the actual Mega Drive from time to time. I kind of want to see if anyone would notice that I wasn't using the Retron if I could get super clear quality from the actual console.
    There's a lot of those MD compilations out there but, really, the pool of games to choose from is pretty much limited to just Sega's own games. Great for all the Sonic games and all that but a bit of a pain if you want to play Chiki Chiki Boys for a while.

      Mellow Gaming [Try4ce] I enjoyed playing some Genesis games on the Wii Virtual Console for a while, but for me, it was the Genesis Konami games that were always out of reach. Since getting a Genesis, Contra Hard Corps and Rocket Knight Adventures are my two favorite games on the system (so far), and you can't get them any other way than for the original console!

    • @MellowGaming
      @MellowGaming 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, and the way Konami is now the chances of seeing them any time soon is slim. There's a bunch of games by Capcom and Virgin Entertainment I'd like to see get releases.

  • @newguy186

    2:08: The way to solve this is either a 32x, or getting a JVC X eye (if you can get pas the large price), which features a standard RCA connector in addition to the model 2 connector. And I'm pretty sure that means the standard RCA connector looks better than the model 2 connector.
