I always wanted one but my family could never afford it. I’d wistfully read GamePro magazine and the reviews of Sega CD games. My firsthand experience with one was renting a unit for a weekend that my parents helped with when I was really sick. It made me feel so much better :). My parents tried so hard, and I’ll always appreciate everything they tried to do for me.

The SEGA CD was one of those cool technical innovations of the time period that made me go 'Wow!' as a kid. That was the cool part about growing up in the 90's, we got to see how tech evolved throughout the decades. The jump from Atari to NES to SNES/MegaDrive to Playstation/N64 to PS2/GCN/Xbox/DC. Then modern gaming happened with the PS3/360 era & things started to get crazy awesome, but now with the most recent generations the jumps in hardware seem miniscule by comparison because everything is mostly the same now, just better lighting & shaders. Today's kids will never know that feeling of going from an 8-bit system to a 16-bit, from cartridges to CD's, from 240 pixels to 480, from mono to stereo to surround sound, from techno noise to actual symphonies in gaming. We grew up in a very interesting time period.

Sega of Japan was mad at the success that Sega of America was having. Ultimately it was Sega of Japan's jealousy that ended the company. Only major success I ever heard they had over America was that the Saturn did a lot better in Japan other than that mega drive in Japan didn't do nearly as well as Genesis in America

Strange, the first time I played the sega cd was in the hospital. My friend was getting some sort of operation and his parents had bought him a sega cd and nhl 94. At the time I was underwhelmed because the game was essentially the same as the cartridge with a few audio flourishes

I liked the video, thanks! I am a big sega fan myself with both segacd and megacd versions, cdx and multimega and a wondermega in my collection (as well as a laseractive btw, which also plays the games). Nice to see it getting some love. I must say though that my hart jumped everytime you used the clip where you plug the MD into the Megacd, since it is at an angle, not flush! :-)

I've Had the same one since 1993. I had an nes, game boy and game gear as well at the time I believe. I got it for my 9 th birthday and not many folks had one. I'm very much into the collecting world and have been since I can remember. It's honestly my favorite system to collect for and even after all these years, it still works great. Although the sega cd was considered a commercial failure, it has developed a substantial following. Any video game stores I have gone to over the years, have a dedicated collector bases that frequents the stores, looking for some new gems for the system. I'm not sure I'll ever go for a compete collection but there are a few more titles I'd like. The heavy hitter one is keio flying squadron. I obtained a great copy of snatcher in the last year. The others are random in price but of course keio flying squadron being the really expensive one. Great job with the vid and long live the sega cd 🤟🔥🎃

I have a Sega CD model 2 that I got maybe 3-4 years after you got yours. I love it! Always wanted one and was so excited when I finally got one. The games were more than $2 but still reasonable at that time. $30 tops in most cases if you looked hard enough, minus the games like Snatcher that were always an arm and a leg. I managed to only get a small handful of games but all quality: Lunar 1 and 2, Vay, Shining Force CD and Dune. Many, many hours of gameplay wth those. While I burn most of the library there a few I would like to own at some point like Final Fight CD. The one I really wish I had is Popful Mail just so I'd have all the Working Designs games for the system, but I've admitted defeat and that I'm priced out of that one.
And, God, did I hate Joseph Lieberman. Just one of those politicians that makes one want to apologize to the rest of the world for having him in Government in the first place. I mean the word LIE is literally in his name! Lie Be Man. It's right there. Might as well have called himself The Man Who Lies. But what I never understood about those hearings is that back in 1985 there was the P.M.R.C. hearings about offensive music, which lead to the Parental Advisory warning lables on certain albums. You have tangible proof from 1985-1993 when the video game hears were happening that people bought the albums with the Parental Advisory warnings because it marked it as the good stuff. Then like you said, Sega CD's and sales of Night Trap went up after those hearings, if only for a short while. Twice in less than 10 years the Government didn't learn its lesson and became the laughing stock of history for it.

My Mega Drive model 1 broke. I always put it down to the Master System converter. For whatever reason not long after using it all my games played in black and white. So my parents got me a Sega Mega CD 2 pack with the Mega Drive 2 with Lion King (MD), Sol-Feace, Cobra Command, Tomcat Alley, Sonic CD & Road Avenger the following Christmas. It was an all in 1 pack from Curry's for £299.99. I was so friggin hyped for it. I think there was only 2 of us at senior school in our year that had one. I even made a new random friend that was curious about it and came round. We became good friends for a fair few years. I always used to play the Sonic CD game in my cd player (just skip the buzzing track 1 😉) My favourite games were Sonic CD, Road Avenger and Sol-Feace. I don't think I ever got any other games for it after that. I managed to complete Ecco the Dolphin on the Mega Drive in the mid 00's. A game I had and hated as a child. It grew on me when I finally understood how to play it in my mid 20's. About 9 years a go I saw the Mega CD version on Ebay for 8 quid. Wished I'd gotten it. The Soundtrack for the cd versions are phenomenal. Might have to try and burn some discs seeing as I still have the hardware

So many good games for that system...Streets of Rage, Jurassic Park, Dark Wizard, Corpse Killer, Sewer Shark, Time Gal, Revenge of the Ninja, The Ninja Warriors, Space Adventure Cobra, Snatcher, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula Unleashed, Road Rash, Wing Commander, Another World 2: Heart of the Alien, Star Wars Rebel Assault, Star Wars Chess, Black Hole Assault, Night Trap, Mansion of Hidden Souls...I did however rent Sonic CD a few times mainly to enjoy that awesome music video in the beginning! Never really got anywhere in it without Tails and the whole time travel mechanic though...

The Sega CD emulating cartridge (Mega SD) works on a regular Genesis too. Or you can actually hook a real Sega CD up to the Mega SG.
There is no current way to play 32X games on an FPGA. And the weird way the 32X hooks up means that even if you have a real 32X to hook up to something like a Mega SG, the video quality will always be garbage. The only good way to play 32X games right now is emulation.

I scored my Sega CD (model II) for $10USD at a retro game store I frequently went to around the same time (2012). I asked if they had any not out for sale and he said all he had was non working ones. I said I do my own console repair anyways if he’d be willing to sell one cheaper. He asked me what model I wanted ( I chose model II for the reliability and cheaper to fix route. Now I wish I asked for a model 1…). He told me it needed a new fuse most likely as it wouldn’t power on. He even gave me the replacement fuse! I took it home plugged it in and verified it had no power.
As I twisted the port to pull out of the power Jack, the LED turned on. It just had a bit of corrosion. So not a bad score for ten bucks!

I’ve had a CDX for about 8 years now after my model 2 bit the dust. Never had the CD games as I always believed the negative hype especially once AVGN(then the Nintendo nerd) trashed it. When I found a CDX at a local gaming store in 2014, I asked “do you have any Sega cd games?” Much to my surprise, they had about 30 games to pursue in store. I pulled up a list of the top CD games, and wow was I surprised. Out of the 30, 12 we’re on the list I pulled up. They weren’t that expensive at that time. I grabbed 5 right away with my new CDX. Final fight, Ecco the Dolphin, Road Avenger, Android Assault, and Batman Returns.
Once I got home, I was astounded of how great they all were. I enjoyed the binge for about 2 weeks, then I went back for more. Grabbed The Terminator, Sega Arcade Classics(5 game), and SoulStar. Since then I’ve gotten the gems like Flink, heart of the alien, sol feace(“soul feces more like” still makes me laugh), Dark Wizard, rise of the dragon, Silpheed, NBA Jam, and so many more. Got repros of Snatcher, Keio, and Lords of Thunder. The holy grail in my collection is Popful mail…at some points I feel terrible even playing it knowing it’s price tag to replace.

Sega CD is extremely well emulated however and reccomend going that route. Aside from the disc reader getting weak on my first PS1, the Sega CD is the only retro console that went bad on me back in the day. My friend had the same issue with his. That was when these systems were current, so definately emulate unless you want to deal with that.

Personally I don’t feel it was a failure but the Sega CD had so much potential and developers didn’t push its limits. Still there were some great titles that did use some of its hardware capabilities. I enjoy my Sega CD just about as much as my TurboDuo.

I still play Genesis games on cartridge on a Model 2 but, even if I could get the Sega CD unit fixed and working, I think I'd sooner just play the Sega CD disks I have on PC or Mac via an emulator since I wouldn't be limited to just three save slots for the entire freaking console.

Love the throwback to the “Angry Black Guy” commercial at the start. But as a collector, I can’t recommend getting a Sega CD. The hardware is expensive and finicky, the worthwhile games are expensive and often better played elsewhere. And if I’m going to have to resort to burning a disc, I’ll just use an emulator. Though I kinda want an Aida boombox model, if I ever become stinking rich. I promise to take it to the hospital and let all the sick children play if the powers that be let me win the lottery to afford one.

I never played the Marky Mark "game" but that Sherlock Holmes pack-in "game" was one of the biggest gaming disappointments of my life since there was very little that was actually a game about it, it was pretty much just choose the order in which you watch the grainy FMV scenes with barely any interactivity.
I wasn't that much of a Night Trap fan either (fun for about an hour one single time in 1993, fortunately my brother spent money on that game so I didn't have to) but at least you had some control of the outcome, unlike the Sherlock Holmes game where the ending for each mystery was just him describing what happened.

There was no such THING as a gaming console when I was 7. Spacewar! was the only videogame at the time and it maybe lurked only on a mainframe at Bell Labs, MIT and possibly Computer Sciences Department of University of California at Berkeley. I personally put the game punch cards in at NORAD SAC HQ so I could tie up the west's missile silo and bomber base's only comms link for launch playing the silly game on a Frankenstein Sperry-Boroughs / DEC / Wang terminal over autovon a thousand miles away. It took a cryptological clearance to get in that room. Spinning reel to reel tapes. Doors swung open with rats nests of telephone wire punched into 66 blocks. A punchcard machine was big. Made out of STEEL. Enough steel to make 12 1958 Buicks. It sat over there against the wall. A woman in high heels walked over to it and fed it stacks of cards, grabbed the stacks as they fed out of the machine and placed them back to where they came from. It was my sister's place of work. I walked in to visit her. (I only had a confidential clearance!) They let me in. (This was underground at Offutt AFB). I said "I've got Spacewar!" My sister's boss said "Give it to me!" I said "NO! I wanna do it!" So he pecked at the keyboard and had me feed the stack of cards into the big hulking brute punch card machine. Then a little cash register receipt style print-out was produced. He tore it off and handed me the double-nought spy national security peepie sneaky spying hacker address and path name to the file. It was a location on their server that I was already familiar with. If any of us were ever caught - we'd all be strung up at leavenworth and handled like the Rosenberg's. That, or we'd just have another idiot or two clogging up time on that line. Nerds and vidiots - we just can't resist. NOW I've got a Commodore 64 and a Commodore PET and a derelict PET chassis with Amiga 500 guts - and I stay out of trouble. Thanks to better availability of video games for all.

Bosh, just get a Genesis/Mega Drive Mini 1 for $40 and hack it...if you DO have one though, keep in mind that you don't need to buy the SUPER rare and expensive games because the system has no copy protection. You can just burn a copy of any game from the same region...it DOES have region-locking though, so if you want to play games from other regions you'll need to region-patch the ISO image before you burn it to a disc.
