    I would argue that Golden Axe was the first "Genesis Plus" game. Even though it wasn't running on cart, it was essentially a ROM file with redbook audio spooled from the disc replacing the BGM.
    This was a pack-in for the early Sega CD units in North America as "4-in-1 Sega Classics". The other 3 games (or other 4 in the CD-X pack) use PCM.

One thing I wish you did - PLEASE when showing video of games (either single or side-by-side comparisons) you are great at identifying the SYSTEM you are showing, but it would be great to know the GAME you are using as an example. Maybe at the top? Some of these games are not common or even from a different region and it would be nice to be seen what it is.

    This has been an amazing year for the Genesis, and it's made me a very happy 40 year old boy. For now, I can't justify one of these, but once the lense in my Sega CD goes out? I'm totally there. One thing that's funny to me is how none of these carts work to their fullest potential through a 32x. Like they're trying to tell us something. But, how else can I make an amazing retro gaming stack of Sonic 3 on Sonic and Knuckles on a Game Genie on a 32x on a Genesis on a Sega CD?

    • @McGuinty2
      @McGuinty2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @Izquierda
      @Izquierda 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree. I get the excitement about FPGA, but I'll never trust it as much as the original hardware. I wish there was a product that only emulates the disk drive and nothing else, and goes inside an original Sega CD that takes care of everything else.

  • @johneygd
    @johneygd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I first tout that sega cd games had to be modded and converted into clusterchain file formats along with other comprimizes in order to make them work on the genesis via a everdrive,but likely this amezing cartride saves the need for modding those games to make them work on the genesis via the cartride slot.

  • @FurEngel

    Looks like a pretty sweet little bit of kit right there. If I hadn't already spent a bunch grabbing an Everdrive X5 I'd probably be more interested. Maybe down the road ? looks like it's in a fantastic state right now but it should only keep improving as more fans hack up Genesis+ stuff much like SD2SNES took many years to really get rolling (it only got SFX support just this year afterall). Great breakdown MLIG !

    Great episode as always. You get something that other reviewers don't regularly get. This is emulation also. Some may call it HW emulation, it may be way more accurate than by SW but is emulation nonetheless.
    And if I had that money to spend I might buy it, don't particularly agree on how they manage the firmware but still.
    Where I live you'll find a unicorn eating 4 clover leafs before a working sega cd at a normal price.

      @cyo_corner 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From an architectural standpoint I don't think the FPGA can perform the same math calculations and polygon rendering as the hitachi CPUs in the 32X. Even if it could be emulated correctly I debate whether it's worth the time to the terraonion developers to code emulation for the very very small library of games. Perhaps in a very late software update since they did add Neo Geo CD capability to the Neo Geo cart they developed. However there are a lot more NeoGeo CD games....

    Awesome product, but why would I want to play Streets of Rage 2 with some off brand soundtrack? The perfect version by Yuzo Koshiro is already on the cartridge.

    Well I dunno about that... The CD Add-On for the PC Engine included a large amount of added RAM which greatly enhanced what the system was capable of. This would have been a simple and yet smart way for Sega to have approached the Sega CD as well and would have reduced the cost.

    I need to get a Mega SG first. :) I never got into the Genesis until much after its lifespan, being that I was a hardcore Amiga gamer back then. :) But I'm appreciating how much it reminds me of the Amiga/ST era. Now that I can get CD games, I'll be able to experience a better (heh) version of the Amiga CD32. :)

    Hey Coury, Just got a Genesis (Model 1) for the first time a couple of months ago, and I have had an itch to get the SEGA CD of course, the problem I’ve had is the hardware has also risen in price. That said, I think I would still stick with getting the real deal because I do want to get some CDs there that are not very expensive such as Sonic CD and Ecco the Dolphin 1 and 2; I think the latter is especially worth it with its New Age music giving it a full experience.
    Regardless, this is still a good solid-state solution for those that look for longevity over authenticity. Cheers!

    I’ve had nothing but problems with save states using the Everdrive + Mega SG. If the Mega SD manages save states better, that makes it essential for me.

      Yup, I'm also waiting for Krikzz to release his version. Got the SD2SNES Pro, and very happy with it. The idea of having to register an account just to download the newer firmware for the Mega SD, and having said firmware tied to the cart's serial number kind of turns me off. The SD2SNES is open source, which means that anyone with the knowledge can contribute. But more importantly, it ensures the project's survival. We're not dependent on one single entity to provide us with updates. We can build them ourselves (and change things if we want), because we have the "blueprints". That's an attitude I can get behind, and if it means having to wait a bit longer for Krikzz' version to come out, that's fine with me.

    Streets of Rage’s music was designed specifically for Genesis’ fm synth and other sound chips. If you had an original model 1 Genesis that game sounded amazing through original hardware and because he decided to go the techno route there really isn’t anything that the Genesis couldn’t do that Yuzo wanted it to.

      It's an option you don't have to use. The original is still there.

    I spent a total of 24 hours of gameplay to beat Phantasy Star 4. The Kega Fusion Emulator on my PC really only seem to function properly with SMS (PSG and FM) and 32x games. I do plan on getting the Victor Wondermega in addition to this Mega SD so I can play and make comparisons of audio in Megadrive and Mega CD games, namely Mega SD FPGA audio vs Wondermega DSP with Ex. Bass button. I'm really getting the Mega SD for the Mega drive games all emulated in 1 cartridge with superior FPGA audio. I actually have the Japanese Sonic CD game so that gets the Wondermega's DSP treatment.

    The FM Soundchip Emulation seems much better on the mega everdrive x7, hopefully in the future this will be refined for the mega sd.

    • @habibk.2423

      @@victor.elkins No, the soundchip of the genesis isn't producing the sound in the case of the fm soundchip emulation. There the final audio signal comes directly from the mega sd/everdrive. In the case of genesis games, i guess you could say, audio "information" is sent from the mega sd/everdrive to the original soundchip of the console, which then produces the final audio signal. Edit: It might not be "information sent", but perhaps the soundchip reads the rom... 😂 I have no clue about thess things.

      @@victor.elkins Yes, flashcarts are emulating SMS FM audio since it is not natively supported in the Genesis/MD (only SMS PSG audio is). As such, there's always room for improvement, meaning future firmwares can be released with more accurate SMS FM emulation.

    • @RedArremer
      @RedArremer 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@victor.elkins Correct, assuming the flashcart isn't set to emulate SMS FM audio, which is not available in a Genesis/MD.

      I'm sure the person that made the proper x7 FM module could be talked to about sharing it for the MegaSD. Since that code was made by a community member and not Krikzz himself.
