A lot of those older players who said no had personal and career issues that year, legal problems, contracts, injuries, relationship with their Olympic teammates. They were putting all of that above the interests of the US national team. That's why the young squad was sent in, they were still pretty good, but just way too young.

    • @younglove3362

How do you know the US wasn't the problem. I remember hearing them speak about sending in role players and young players instead of our best players and being like "wtf are they thinking?" I was okay with the line up because it wasn't that bad. But I was shocked when other teams were busting us, especially when shooting those outrageous 3's before Steph was doing it 🤔.

RJ wasn't with Team USA in 2002 when they lost in the World Cup at Indiana. While they dominated the FIBA America Cup the following year (with those players he mentioned), it was the same story for the '04 Olympics and it's not as if the system was any better for the '06 World Cup until now. They just have more unguardable players. Those select teams with guys who played in World Cup qualifying defend better and look like a legit FIBA Team than anyone USAB can pick from the NBA over an off-season.
