FACTS, the gold medal game against Spain video still exists. They wouldn't have won without Kobe period. Everyone should watch the fourth quarter of that game.
There was maybe a chance. The reason they lost 04 and other years is because the best don't usually go over. Over half the guys on that 04 team were only rookies and sophomores who never won an NBA title at that point. The Dream Teams were full of well established vets and HOF players. The rest of the world has caught up and we can't keep skating to gold sending the C and D teams. Some of the guys on the FIBA team last year were bench players.

Watching the redeem team let me know that Kobe truly was a master of his craft, watching one of the best offensive players become a defensive vice grip was breathtaking. Rest in peace Kobe, I got to watch him and Melo light up the Olympics in 2012 with all those 3's. Salute to Melo, one of the best ever🙏🏿👊🏿🙏🏿.

In my opinion, it would have been very, very difficult for Team USA to win the gold medal in 2008 without Black Mamba.
Kobe had a huge impact on the team culture and work ethic. He also saved Team USA in the final against Spain. When the team was under pressure, Kobe took control and did what he's always done because he can handle pressure like no other.

I'm Sorry Melo, but there is no way you beatin Spain in 08 without Mamba on that team. Kobe brought an unparalleled work ethic to that 08 US team and was the clear leader on and off the court. Now talking this game specifically, Kobe either scored or assisted on the final 18 of 24 points within the last 6 minutes of the game. Not to mention when Spain cut the lead to 2 late in the 4th, Kobe made 3 straight plays to extend the lead back to the US. Kobe was the definition of clutch this game.

Kobe brought defensive intensity to the team and even coach k said he had to tell Kobe to start shooting. Kobe didn’t want to intrude on the talent but he did eventually when needed. Kobe asked to play defense on the best player of every team. His mentality was unmatched. Could they have won? Maybe but the fact is he was the different piece added and they won. The whole documentary proves that.

Kobe was usually hounded for showing out but Coach K was the opposite. He knew what Kobe was capable of and told him "nah, none of that here! I need you to go all out!" Which is what Kobe doesn't often hear. And Kobe only had Shaq on his team to which they had friction with. However, LeBron, Wade, Bosh, and company are super stars and fellow killers like him. Which made it easier for him to get along with and bond well. Kobe said that LeBron gets things in order but when crunch time came, give him the ball and move out of the way. So it goes back to what I said, LeBron was the leader and Kobe was the muscle. Saying Kobe was the leader is like saying Kareem was the leader over magic in Showtime Lakers. Get over your fanboy bias of Kobe. He wasn't the definitive leader.
Kobe not only molded them but he showed them how to truly be winners and also to have healthier respect for the opposition. Kobe knew what Euro ball was all about and knew how much more fundamentally sound they were. I think it was the best for Lebron also as he got to see what it took to get to the next level.
Kobe set the tone for USA Basketball, they came up short in Athens ‘04 and in the ‘06 FIBA WC leading up to the summer Olympics in ‘08. Kobe showed up to camp ready to compete from Day 1, like literally would embarrass you if you didn’t bring your A game. He took training, workouts and preparation seriously. He didn’t show up that summer to win anything less than gold.

Two things Kobe brought there: work ethic and gold medal clutch.
Melo is capping. “Probably would’ve won it” … they lost bad in 2002, and 2004. Barely lost in 2006. But no one on that team played defense or had the intimidating presence yet the way prior USA teams instilled.
