So far, Saru has been my favorite ST: Discovery character. Awesome arc played by an awesome actor.

Absolutely agreed. I have loved Trek since I was a toddler watching syndicated reruns in the early 70s. I think the Kelpiens, in general, are one of the most fascinating aliens yet. Saru himself is so well written and acted that I adore him. Easily one of my favorite Trek characters, overall.

This would be good si-fi. But being that it has to live up to the Star trek name not so good of a show.

I'll admit, he was probably my least favorite Discovery crewmate during the first few episodes. But the guy grew on me and now he's one of the most fascinating

He asked, the captain requested Starfleet allow him to come along, and they did.
It’s literally explained in the episodes.

He found alien technology on his own. He left his home planet, was granted refugee status by the federation

This a character who basically cant make up his mind through whole series and writers cant make up their mind on his powers specially "sence of danger"(sometimes he can sence danger between ships sometimes he gets hit in the face and doesnt react)
