    What I love about physical media is that everyone has their own completely unique collection. Not only are the films within the collection different depending on each person's tastes, but the versions of each film. Seeing your Halloween films there; I've got a steelbook of 1, Scream slipcover of 2 & 3, regular American versions of 4 & 5 (but customized with the addition of the bonus disc from the Scream boxset) and the version of 6 from the boxset. It's my own bespoke collection of Halloween based on what I wanted to get and there's something very satisfying about that.

I remember watching Romero's Dawn of the Dead at my friend's house on his parents' front projection screen (like the one Lex Luther had in Superman the Movie) in the early 80's when we were in junior high school. I remember thinking what a unique, bizarre and funny film this was. I especially liked the scenes showing the chaos and breakdown of civilization in the beginning of the movie with the ominous bass heavy soundtrack in the background.

    I find the Scream Factory slips to be very flimsy and absolute magnets for shelf wear. Often they do t survive retail without getting chewed up. I remove all the slips, throw them in a box in the closet, and the discs look better than they did with them on. It’s a real shame.

    I'm quite proud that most of my purchases are limited editions. Not necessarily expensive boxset, but slip covers are often limited, sometimes booklets or reversable covers, bonus discs etc. Lots of releases are limited and it is quite satisfying owning them due to the fact that you have it, you don't need to worry about missing out in future.

    I have been collecting blu-rays for over 10 years now including the rare blu-rays from Disney you can only get from their Disney Movie Club. I have approximately 1,640 blu-rays in my collection. Won't do digital. Physical media is the only way for me. My most valuable, not in terms of cost but in sentimental value, is the Star Wars Trillogy - (Original Theatrical Version, not Special Edition) on blu-ray. Thanks For Sharing Your Collection! Long Live Physical Media!!!!

  • @ralphjenkins6291
    @ralphjenkins6291 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should pay attention to announcements and rumors about rereleases, because if a movie is rereleased, the old disc often loses value (because demand goes down). My Twilight Time edition of Leave Her to Heaven was worth around $90 until it was released by Criterion. So you do need to know when to sell. Collecting movies isn’t the best investment, because the number that increase in value are greatly outnumbered by the ones that only drop in value as they sit on your shelf collecting dust. The good thing about a movie collection is that you can watch and enjoy them.

  • @wrighthousemedia
    @wrighthousemedia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is a small collectible niche, but, it's hard to predict what titles will be worth $$$. 2 big things that make a title worth some big money is when a title goes out of print or when a title is recalled by the studio. Great example of an out of print title is the Friday the 13th box set shown in this video. The studio usually doesn't announce the title going OOP & you gotta scramble to try & get your hands on a copy at the MSRP. What's a bigger deal than a title going OOP is when a title is recalled by the studio. This can happen for a number of reasons. Three cases that come to mind is Little Shop Of Horrors, This Is Spinal Tap, & the Wes Craven film Swamp Thing. Little Shop, & Spinal Tap were released on blu-ray w/o the directors consent & when this happens, the director of each film filed a junction w/ the studio, making the studios recall all copies. This causes any purchased copies to become instant collectibles. The case w/ Swamp Thing was MGM used a European interpositive of the movie, when they pressed the film on DVD. The problem was nudity in the film (boob shots), The U.S. print had no nudity & was rated PG. Once a soccer mom complained to Blockbuster Video about the movie, Blockbuster sent an email to MGM/UA & got the title pulled from shelves. Be forewarned that the studios can fix all of these issues & re-release the titles at a future date.

Not gonna even think of selling it.

    I don't have anything mind-blowing, but I have a lot of movies whose price has risen 2-4X (or more) due to going out of print. Examples:
    _-The Ringu Collection_ Arrow Video box set. Bought it for about $60 brand new when it came out. Now, used copies are selling for $120-$150 on Amazon/Ebay.
    _-Solid Metal Nightmares: The Films of Shinya Tsukamoto_ Arrow Video box set. Bought it for $75 last year, and it's already gone up to $150+ on sites like Amazon and Ebay.
    _-Die Hard: Nakatomi Plaza Collection_ box set. Bought it for $65 new back in 2015. Now, it seems to sell for anywhere between $120-$200 on average based on Ebay and Amazon listings.
    -The _Phantasm Sphere Collection_ that came out a while back. I think I paid like $75 for it? And now it's going for $150+ on Ebay.
    -Some of my out-of-print Shout! Factory titles (Ex. _Species II, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Poltergeist II/III,_ etc.) that I got for $20-$25 new are now selling for $100+ used apiece online depending on the site and seller. I've even seen one or two of my titles listed for as high as $200.
    -I also have the Scream Factory _Halloween_ Deluxe Box Set, which I paid less than $80 for literally right before it went out of print. I've routinely seen it listed for $300-$500+ now. However, my box came scuffed up pretty bad, and the copy of _Halloween H20_ was damaged and won't play properly, so I think mine wouldn't go for that much. I'm sure I could sell the remaining films for a decent profit, though. (Not that I would. I don't plan on selling any of these, since I bought them specifically to own them. Maybe if a better edition comes out down the line...) I did end up getting a stand-alone Blu-Ray of _H20_ just so I had all the movies, but it's still a little annoying since it doesn't have all the extra content from the Scream Factory disc.

    Love your observations and the fact there are still people collecting DVDs. I'm fortunate to have a couple of friends who are also into it. I do get some good natured ribbing due to collecting the old anaglyph blue/red DVDs, and yes, a few video tapes. Some look great, others...well. Goodwill's one of my favorite hunting spots.

    I dont have the drive to find movie collecting a hobby anymore.
    I think part of it is.... there is sooo much to watch and I only have so much time. Streaming has gotten pretty good with the visual quality and sound quality and Im ok with that.
    I do appreciate this cats knowledge and reviews though..👍

    The value of a rare Blu ray does not necessarily go down if the movie gets re released. To a rabid collector, a limited release is still a limited release and I find the value is very much retained.

      For the film's themselves, they always release a more "Vanilla" set after their limited edition, however sometimes they won't contain the physical extras / bonus discs.
      In the case of the Hellraiser Trilogy box set, there are two editions: the 3 Disc Trilogy edition linked above, which you can still manage to get on eBay for around £25 brand new, or the limited, much rarer 4 Disc "Scarlet" Box Set edition, which goes for £100+ now...

      ...I myself have a copy of the Trilogy Box Set, and that houses 3 different Keep Cases, one for each film, which are the versions you can also purchase separately.
      The Scarlet Edition, comes with a 200 page hardback book, 5 art cards, Pinhead badge and poster as well as a 4th exclusive disc which contains short films and featurettes exclusive to the limited edition.

    I have the French 30th anniversary steelbook of the back to the future trilogy that I had Christopher Lloyd sign when he came to Paris à few years ago. Series 6 just came out and I'm always afraid to miss a new set.

  • @speedythecat07

    I’ve seen a lot of titles reach crazy high prices, and like you, I’m not looking to sell. Back in the DVD era before bluray and 4K just for example the John Hughes movies from the 80’s went thru the roof, I think at one point 16 candles was $250, but eventually they came out again on bluray and you couldn’t give the DVD away.
    These days steelbooks, in particular 4K steelbooks always seem like solid buys. They often are limited and as you said, limited is the key. If it’s limited and 4K and the steelbook is one of the nicer looking ones, bang!
    I have thousands of movies on DVD/BD/4K and sure, I look around and think damn that’s a lot of money, and it softens the blow if I know many of them are worth more than I paid, but you have to have a buyer willing to pay that price or it doesn’t mean much. I don’t sell movies anymore unless I upgrade the title. Back when we use to buy/sell/trade I found that eventually I’d go out and repurchase the title, so I just quit doing it.
    I love every genre of film, but I am a huge horror fan. Especially 80’s slashers and anything with practical FX. Scream, Arrow, Vestron, Synapse, blue underground, Kino Lorber, vinegar syndrome, and a few more... That what I primarily spend big money on, and believe it or not a lot of the 60’s,70’s, 80’s, 90’s movies I collect from various genres come from goodwill, pawn shops, thrift stores, yard sales, flea mkts... I recase nearly everything which is suuuuper pricey, but I pick those movies up for 1-2 dollars, even $2 Blu-ray’s and I find that stores like 2nd in Charles and FYe have no idea what their movies are worth and I take pride in killing them since they gouge the heck out of people, Fye especially.
    I have a room in my house that’s a dedicated movie room, like my own little rental store. I also have a music room and my CD/Vinyl collection which has also gotten out of hand.
    Be careful guys because media collecting can take over your house easier than you may think. I have a very understanding wife of 25+ years and she enjoys the hunt more than anything. I’m just a huge fan of film, I collect certain directors, actors, eras and even certain labels/series.... Steelbooks, I tried to fight them off, I’m still trying but I am failing LOL.
    I’m pretty selective, and you have to be. I will say I don’t just collect, I watch them. I was a huge movie theater rat pre-covid, I have a lot of free time and my collection has served me well.

      Forgot to mention, I hate slip covers, like, I REALLY hate slip covers. I chunk em except for my boutique horror labels. Those I carefully compress and save in gallon zip lock bags or acid free boxes. Then when I die my wife can slide them back on to sell at a big yard sale for pennies on the dollar and I can haunt the crap out of her (she’s been warned). LMAO

    I probably blew upwards of $15,000 on my old Laserdisc collection. The vast majority of them are worthless except for a few box sets and some Japanese imports. I have one HD Laserdisc (called HI-Vision) that could very well be valuable in I put it up on Ebay. The players that require HD discs to play sell for a pretty penny, and were only manufactured in Japan.
