0:33 Perfect. I've had a few versions over the years, but with so much collecting, it became one more thing I didn't have time to keep up with. I currently only have the scream factory release you show at 14:06 but I'm considering that dvd release with the unedited commentary. Thanks for including the link to the article.
It's quite an interesting read seeing all the changes they made to that commentary track! Way more than I realized, I thought they just censored the smoking and cut a couple lines, but nope, it's a full re-edit with many differences, some good, most bad, but hey - well worth having both versions imo.
I have it on every format known to man including the Japanese special edition laserdisc box set. You can only day “great” so many times but I’ll say it again. It’s great. Excellent video.
There’s only two movies I’d double, triple and quadruple dip for and they are The Thing and Hellraiser. For whatever reason I just can’t help myself with those two movies.
Just picked up the last scream factory steelbook from my local FYE for 24.99. They're now out of print and see it on ebay for at least $60. Kind of don't even wanna open it haha.
In just over a year, a 40-year-anniversary is bound to be released, so I'll wait for that. Fucking amazing vid, btw! I'm here as I wanted to get a blu ray of this classic, but I'll wait for the 40th anniversary edition ;) (PS, the game was pretty great too)
I have the HD-DVD release of the Thing, it has a less filtered looking transfer than the first Blu Ray and it presents the Documentary properly. I guess Universal was just bitter about losing the format war. The commentary however is the censored one unfortunately.
Now I'm curious to know if the arrow release is uncensored. I'm ordering it very soon. Because it is either that or a double pack version which I think is the UK blu ray release. So the arrow one looks like the best one to get.
There's only one cut of the movie as far as I'm aware. Unless you're talking about the commentary track, which I haven't listened to on the Arrow release yet. But I assume it's the same censored commentary that is the norm now. Hence why I hang on to my old DVD release.
Well, apparently there's a second DVD rerelease that is literally that Collectors Edition with the uncut commentary, but has the classic poster on the front, and some of the most basic disc art ever.
Yes it is. That one is 16x9 anamorphic widescreen, using the full available resolution of the 4x3 frame and "squeezing" it down to proper widescreen. The original DVD was 4x3 letterbox, which wastes nearly half the available resolution of the frame on black bars within a 4x3 frame. Anamorphic uses the full resolution of the frame and digitally squeezes the image into its correct aspect ratio, so the black bars do not waste any of the resolution of the image. So rest assured, you got the best DVD edition. That edition ALSO has the original uncensored commentary track, which hasn't been re-released since on any format.
Mastered in 4K, but the release itself was Blu-ray. a pretty common practice for Blu-ray, just as a lot of DVDs were made from 1080p masters. So far, Arrow hasn't put out a 4K version, though it does appear to be their 4K master that was used for the recent 4K studio release.
That's not what these are, they are mainly packaging/extras comparisons. Pretty sure I mentioned that the Scream Factory Steelbook/Arrow edition are the ones to get as they have the best quality transfers by far. The original Universal one has some DNR issues (the UK release is a bit better, but not by much), the original Scream Factory release has too much blue added to the color making red scenes pink. Arrow edition and the Scream Factory steelbook have the same transfer (Well, SF steelbook has both their original one and the new Arrow one), vastly superior to all the previous editions.
@@zaranyzerak I've read Amazon reviews who claim the 4K transfer from Scream Factory isn't good. Which is why I am tracking down every video related to any of the various editions. Some who saw the original theatrical viewing are also claiming the initial Blu-ray is the closest to the way it looked back in '82. I'm simply wandering around trying to get definite answers in regards to the thoughts on each transfer, especially those with all the editions, which is why I mentioned this. I have the original Scream Factory Blu-ray coming soon, so I was trying to figure which edition is the best. The Arrow is the one, it seems, though I don't have a region free player, thus I might have to send the order back and get the Steelbook instead. I don't know what to do...
The Thing is my favourite movie ever and i have done the by buying it multiple times 2x vhs, 2x dvd, 2x universal blu rays and the arrow video 4k remaster. The first time i saw it in widescreen was 2000 but it wasn't in 16:9 so when it was released again a few years later i bought it but i didn't read the back of the case but it was the same dvd and they used the cover from The Thing xbox game.
Oh yea it’s my favorite movie too I got it on blue ray dvd arrow another blu ray collectors 4K I got the thing video game too (sucked) but other than that best movie ever
The steel book is everything the arrow has so if you have a region B player then there’s no point in getting the steel book unless you like the artwork
Zaranyzerak I'm a bit confused about the original US DVD edition, the copy I have has the original poster art with the collector's edition logo at the top with the gold bars. It also says on the back that it is indeed anamorphic widescreen and when I play it it is in anamorphic widescreen that fills the screen.....so I'm not sure why people are saying it's non anamorphic? Mine is the old release I bought used before the newer one with the different cover art. Did Canada get an alternate disc that was non anamorphic or were there some copies that were anamorphic? It's really strange. I just ordered that steelbook for the 2 transfers like you described, kinda sucks the SF version looks pink lol.....it's not supposed to look like that! At least Arrow fixed it from what I've heard.
My Girlfriend actually gave my the Thing Prequel to Charity thinking it was a duplicate of the 1982 movie of the same name.Oh well ...😃.Yes I love this movie so much.
Say zaranyzerak I’ve heard that blumhouse is making a new thing remake/reboot I have no interest in seeing the new blumhouse reboot but what are your thoughts on the matter?
I'm interested, as it's based on the recently discovered full novel-length version of the original John W. Campbell story, "Who Goes There?" The novel was only discovered a couple of years ago and was recently released in full under Campbell's original title, "Frozen Hell." So the Blumhouse film (a studio I trust implicitly with horror stuff, btw, just look at their take on The Invisible Man for proof how well they can handle revisiting old properties) will be the first time the original full-length story has been adapted into a film. All previous versions were based on the novella version, which was a truncated version of the original manuscript that Campbell put together because he couldn't get a buyer for the full novel version. So definitely curious! I actually have the novel on the way in the mail, can't wait to read it.
@James Borlan That's too bad, they're right at the forefront of the current new Golden Age of Horror we've been enjoying the past few years. They've put out some of the most consistently excellent horror movies in recent memory. Get Out, Us, The Conjuring movies and all the tie-ins to that, The Invisible Man, Insidious 1-4,, Happy Death Day 1-2, the new Halloween movies, The Purge movies and TV series, and of course all the Paranormal Activity movies to name a few of the big ones. All top-notch stuff. Plus a multitude of films for streaming services. But hey, each to their own.
the piece de resistance the cherry on top the creme de la creme the cream of the crop and the ne plus ultra when it comes to horror and in my book I proudly and humbly declare The Thing(1982) a masterpiece John Carpenter’s magnum opus The Citizen Kane of Horror and one of my favorite movies of all time and it is hands down a horror classic
It's always shocked me that people like the Scream Factory transfer. The sharpening is within spitting distance of the original Fargo Blu-Ray. Great extras package though. At the end of the day, I really wish boutique brands would communicate with each other so we're not getting two transfers from two companies in two years. Arrow could've easily released stateside had Scream Factory not purchased the rights. Luckily it's not that hard to rip a region B disc and burn it region free. (It also gives you the opportunity to replace the censored commentary with the original one) Might not be an option for those with massive foreign collections, but for just one or two is no problem.

John Carpenter has made so many great films.

Event Horizon is now on sale in the Scream Factory store.
I recently ordered the scream factory edition bluray. It was on sale for 8.99. Heck yeah, I can't wait.

Likely the old transfer that was used for the UK release. The 4K transfer that Arrow did has only been making the rounds for a few years.
