  • This is Part 2 of a three part video series covering the crash on The Smiler at Alton Towers Resort. This is the most thorough and accurate video covering the accident on 2nd June 2015, compiled using information from the Health and Safety Executive's investigation reports into the accident.
These documents are available at the bottom of the page here: www.whatdotheyknow.com/reques...
If you haven't already done so, I advise you watch Part 1 first: • The Smiler Crash: No S...
Part 2 of this series covers the timeline as set out in the HSE Factual Report, with schematic animations showing the locations of trains and personnel in the lead up to the crash. I will also address some issues raised by this report.

What an unexpected but extremely informative series. Hopefully it enforces how safe theme park rides are designed to be, since it required such a specific combination of human error and miscommunication for this to happen.

Thankyou for this detailed explanation. I love theme parks and the technology behind the attractions. This should not have happened and was very heartbreaking towards the riders. It is good they learned from this and made future attractions safer.

I rode the smiler for the first time today, two train operation. Still to this day, the train struggles to get through the second part of the Staffordshire knot. It felt REALLY slow and being that this element has such a troubled mechanical and emotional history. I really do hope this could be removed, it honestly knocks my confidence when riding the smiler. I fully understand nowadays it's likely to just valley in the middle and then be winched off but if the propulsion isn't there, the element shouldn't be there.

It is amazing how much of this incident is still covered up to this day by Merlin, the HSE and the courts. I feel for the victims who never really got proper justice and worry for the safety of the rest of Merlin's little enterprise. It sounds like there is a lot more to this story than what has been published publicly.

I'd like to add another issue: Maintenance being allowed to reset a block with riders on lift 1. They should've been evacuated.

This would have been relevant years ago, dredging this up again for no reason when all information has been available for many years is capitalising on it. What's next, a video on the death of Diana?
