I bought this lens originally for my D500 to act as 35mm FF equivalent. But works also fine on my D850 now. Beats most of the other 24mm F mount lenses.
@brettryan3298 I have that lens also but I must say it isn't the sharpest. But then again it is not all about sharpness. The 24mm D is very compact indeed. Use it mostly on my D700 along with some other AFD lenses like the 35mm f2 D, 50mm f1.4D and the 50mm f1.8 D.
This lens is so good! I have purchased two, sold them, only to be in the market for a third one once again. So ya'll know I photograph weddings on 35mm film and primarily use D primes and the 24 1.8 is twice the size of the primes I use SO! I would pick up the 24 2.8 D instead. However! When comparing the two, I found the 24 G has better micro-contrast while rendering a little more creamier (best for skin tones) compared to the 24 D. While the 24 D performs well, on my last client, I really needed those extra two stops. SO! Off to buy another 24 G like a dummy.
@@ZWadePhoto I've been a Nikon fan boy since 2003 and you'd think I'd know better by now. BUT! I do like the chase of lusting after "new" gear. Things happen for a reason as they say.
My plan is to buy used 28 f1.4 and 105 f1.4. While you can find 105mm easily on israeli market, the only option to buy used 28mm is on Ebay, so you can't check the condition of the lens before you buy. I heard that even japanese sellers might cheat sometimes
My recommendation is to skip on the 28 1.4 D unless you have money to burn. It's way too expensive and the G versions blow the D wide primes out of the water when it comes to both skin tones and micro-contrast. Even Ken Rockwell recommends going for the 1.8 G versions and not the 1.4 G and D versions of equivalent focal length with wide primes, as does The Angry Photographer. I agree. And I have NEVER had an issue buying from Japanese eBay vendors. MAP Camera is very reputable if you want a safe bet.
I use my old G lenses with the FTZ adapter on the Z63 and they work perfectly. Surprisingly they work fantastic on video. They smoothly track a subject in and out with without any pulsing. G lenses are the best value out there. You could pick up the 14-24 lens for like 500 bucks. I own the new 35 mm 1.4 Z lens and also the older 1.4 G lens. Strangely enough, the G lens tracks people in video much better than the new lens. And also has better color and dimensionality. The new lenses are great. But they don’t have the magic that the older G lenses do. In fact, even all the new S line lenses Tend to make subjects look like they’re pasted onto the bokeh. Yes, the bokeh is smooth, but it doesn’t have the separation from the subject and dimensionality of the older G lenses. They’ve over corrected these lenses so much that they’ve taken out the magic.
@willvazquez3218 the 35g vs 35 1.4 Z, the g was definitely premium of the time and the new Z is of intended lesser quality than the 1.8 Z. I'm not surprised the G version is better for you, but at the same time, i kind of am haha
I feel like 24 primes don't get the attention they deserve, because everyone has a 24 to something lens these days (and modern zoom quality is amazing).
After my transition from Nikon DSLR's to Mirrorless Z's (including trading in a bunch of F-mounts for Z-mounts) I try not to look back but I have to admit, there were some great winners amongst the gold ring autofocus F's. Ironically, I just completed building up a collection of classic F2 film SLR's and vintage manual focus Nikkors. Now I ended up straddling the worlds of old-style film and ultra-modern Z's with nothing in-between!
Very solid lens, in Nikon’s 20/24/85 f/1.8 G lens lineup. I really like the 20, albeit a little wide for some. 24 has always been a very good ‘workable’ focal length. I remember the first manual focus 24mm Nikkor lens I purchased, and on first use, said, wow, there is a big difference coming from 28mm. ZWade Zeeeee Wade
The idea of the FTZ adaptors is great, but I find that I barely use mine anymore: when I bought my Z camera body, I bought a version with the superb 24-70 mm F4 S, and I also bought the Nikon Z mount 50 mm 1.8 S. More recently I bought an inexpensive but decent third party Z 85 mm, and the Nikon the Z superzoom 28-400 mm, so I've got my bases covered with excellent lenses. I may still use my FTZ for specialty shoots if I want to use a particular F mount lens, but my three Nikon Z lenses are each so good (and "low" priced compared to the other Z mount lenses) that I usually would rather stick to my Z lenses.
@ZWadePhoto yeah kiddo I watch less videos. Take more pictures. You two become too toxic and clicky. All my friends shoot different cameras from Canon to Nikon to Sony. Somehow people on TH-cam don't get that it just became unfun

You should see what the 24mm F2.8 D does on my DX bodies, fantastic quality, small, unobtrusive, great colors.
