I mean, technically, and based on my rudimentary understanding, abiogenesis IS the evolution of non-organic matter into amino acids, and then into self replicating RNA.... due to environmental conditions and pressures. .. so I could understand the confusion in semantics... but let's not give the snake oil salesmen credit for using that semantic confusion to spread disinformation, misinformation, and just straight up lies... they absolutely refuse to learn the science bc they risk tainting their foundational beliefs with the truth, bc that would mean admitting they've lied and don't deserve the attention they've garnered. Then have the audacity to insult our intelligence and honesty. Literal willful ignorance.
@Nicki Adulting kind of, but not really. In some definitions of evolution, sure, but in the biological term, no. Abiogenesis refers to the emergence of life from chemistry yes. But evolution is a process by which generation based change occurs in organism populations. One is chemistry creating living things the other is change in the offspring of living things over several generations. Though change over time and development of new things which can be used as a definition for evolution like the evolution of human languages. I think abiogenesis falls there more easily.
In general, just remember they are similar, even connected but not quite the same, and while one leads to another one is not technically the other.

What makes this all even funnier is that I just saw an apologist argue that science saying that minerals in rocks were part of the chemical process leading to life is "scientific proof" of the Bible - y'know, 'cause of the "made from dirt" stuff 'n' all.

Word of advice for Matt Powell: If you can prove existence of God, don't waste time on TH-cam or TikTok. Go straight to the media and become the most famous individual that ever lived. Fame and untold riches await for anyone that can succeed, where 2000+ years of apologetics and theology failed.

quit feeding the baby food and give it just pure clean water, see if it continues to grow... babies come from an egg and sperm cell it grows due to food which is made of elements and compounds from the ground which is the results of rocks breaking down and organic materials breaking down and reforming in the shape of food. And all of this came from stars exploding over the last 13 billion years...

The point that's often missed with Powell, Kunt Hovind, Ray Cumfart, William Lie Craig and co is that they're pursuing a business model. Being "uneducated" or "stupid" isn't the issue. They're knowingly manipulating a vulnerable audience to make money.

Good analogy Patrick Linford. Rocks are involved, and pretty much essential but, so are a lot of other factors, sunlight for example which plays it's part in many different ways alone, then all the other things that all had to come together and were almost bound to under the right conditions somewhere in this vast universe over the billions of years this one's been here for.

I recently had a short, but intense argument with a fundamentalist street preacher. The man was just like Matt Powell, completely ignorant about science and evolution. After ten minutes of trying to have a measured conversation with him I simply walked away. I will simply try to avoid such people in the future. They are fanatics and in the case of Matt Powell, seriously dangerous!
The worst part of those interactions is that preacher probably tells the story about the time his arguments left an atheist speechless.

I think that would take indoctrination, and it's not just what you are taught, but the way you are taught to think. Pop science is fine if you want a quick overview, but the details tend to be more nuanced and slower to progress to a conclusion that's not even concrete, particularly the way laypeople might understand it. And he's even mischaracterizing THAT to arrive at a garbage talking point to deliberately lie to people already on his side. Because the line in HIS book about false witness doesn't apply to him, apparently. Which is something we see a lot of in Evangelical Christian leadership. They can break whatever commandment they want.

I'm not nearly qualified to debate this subject as well as Aron Ra or Professor Dave, but if I was, and I faced young Mr. Powell, I would only call him by his full name, Mathew. I would make it clear to his face that I'm using his full name because when an adult corrects a child, they always call the child by his full given name.

God is magical in every aspect of Its being. Theologians downplay this because it makes them look childish (and, dare I say, insane). But in reality, a rejection of magic is a rejection of God. If no magic, then no God. There is NO magic.
They somehow don't understand that magic and miracles are synonymous, so they get quite defensive when we point out that, _God did it_ circumvents an actual explanation, instead insisting that it was magically created.
Magic is, almost definitionally, altering reality, against the laws of physics, to make the impossible possible. How they think making a universe "out of nothing", or multiplying food, or making water wine, etc. isn't literally magic is beyond me.

@@jeb6314 we've found all five nucleotides necessary for life in meteorites. We've found phospho-lipid bilayers that form naturally. We've found auto-catalytic chemical reactions that form spontaneously over time in the right conditions. We have a ton of evidence that all points to abiogenesis. They have a magic book.

But we reproducted almost every step, but we have so many possible options for each step that we might never found out which series of events happened to develope the exact early life form(s) from which then the earliest common ancestor of all currently existing live forms on earth developed.
The worst part is we see how when people die, they decompose to something similar to dust, so it’s understandable why pre 20 century people thought human decomposition and dust are the same, but scientists researched and after developing the tools for it, found the molecular structures were extremely different, disproving one of the first claims of the bible. We have a more detailed understanding of science now than we did even just a couple decades ago, but apologists want to regress our understanding of reality by almost a century (or more in certain areas) just to fit their narrative.
@@jeb6314 I'm pretty sure we made life from non-life, which is all abiogenesis really is. To claim that abiogenesis never happened is to claim that life has always existed, which even theists do not claim.

There are only two things that would suit Matt: a straight jacket, and a muzzle .
The life came from rocks thing is one of the only arguments of theirs I understand and have some sympathy for. It is technically true, it's just grossly oversimplified. Most of the components that make up life did come from rocks. The issue is one of semantics. They then twist this to make it sound like we think rocks magically turned into life which is going too far. It's hard to correct though since the core of their nonsense is true, life is made of the stuff that came from rocks.
So just telling them that we don't think that is technically us lying. We do think that life came from rocks.
The problem here is, if you're truly reading the scientific data behind the topic, it's almost dishonest to try and make that semantics argument.
Maybe rocks come from minerals _(the components)_ being pressed together..

The next question is, if god was timeless and always existed, why did he decide to create the universe when he created it? Why not earlier, why not later, why at all, why only one? But I know, a human is not able to understand god's ways, the usual answer of apologists. That however would raise the question, if humans can't understand god's ways, how can apologists claim to understand them?
