  • The 2022 Hyundai NEXO Limited is a quirky, hydrogen powered SUV, but is it worth its nearly $63K MSRP?

I’ve been driving my Nexo for the past year, in Southern California. I’m absolutely loving it. I adore my Nexo. But, I am one of the lucky ones with my commute to work there are about 6 different fill up stations I can go to. The down side is to having to check if they are online. At times, I do have to drive a ton for work and it’s VERY comfortable. No more hip problems from my prior Sudan I was driving. I do hope more hydrogen stations pop up.

How much are you paying for hydrogen?

@@LetiferTVI was paying $33/kg. When I first got my nexo it was $13/kg. The Nexo holds 6.2 kg

Thanks for the great review. I definitely would never consider buying one of these new but as I’m shopping around I’m finding 2019 through 2021 models going for $10-$15,000 looking at a very nice one with 26,000 miles for, only $12,000. since I live in the San Francisco Bay area, I think this is a no-brainer for 12 K

I own one here in Korea and absolutely happy with it. Local government subsidies almost half of its price tag, which is huge argument. It is roomy, it has plenty of modern features (incl. OTA) and its tremendous driving range (60+ miles/kg of hydrogen) compared to any other BEV finally turned me towards Nexo over other EV offerings. And what's the most important for me is almost ZERO drop in range during cold season. I park outside and never worried about this issue since my Nexo provides steady 330+ miles in winter on a single charge.

Hydrogen infrastructure definitely needs to grow If it wants to stay relevant fuel alternative . Didn't even know this car was a thing. The nexo definitely lives in the shadow of the ionic

Comparing it to other cars isn't fair at all because its really just a car in its own class. Hydrogen technology has a long way to go and it'll probably be decades before its a realistic option for everyone but its very possible that it could replace gas, hybrid and evs all together as they as more environmentally friendly than all of them and have the most potential

It's $35,000 off msrp. But my city does not have a single Hydrogen fuel station.

The conversation about hydrogen fuel cell is the same as it was 20 years ago when I was in middle school - accessibility of hydrogen. Even though hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe (and third most abundant on Earth), there are limitations with purification, efficiency, infrastructure. BEV will continue to gain traction as FCEV dwindles.

Being a stay at home mom/ businesswoman living in California i hardly ever drive maybe about 15 miles a week if that.
Im strongly considering purchasing this car . Its not my ideal car at all !
But i found one for 10k with 20k miles on it . The stage of life im at i think this may work

The car itself is quite nice, save for some minor issues with interior rattling, lack of seat releases in the back and a navigation system that occasionally freezes for no reason.
The biggest issue here in NorCal is the fueling infrastructure or lack thereof. In the Sacramento area, we went from 3 stations (which were barely enough) to 1. Bring your laptop and some coffee while you wait nearly two hours for a fillup.

Traditional electric cars is a bubble. Hydrogen is the future.

The problems with the hydrogen infrastructure are almost the same as what plagued the introduction of gasoline between about 1900 and 1915. But the infrastructure will grow quickly, especially with subsidies just as the electric infrastructure is growing. Hydrogen and battery electric are both the future. The internal combustion is dead.

Windows XP sounding ass startup. I'd be all over a hydrogen car if fuel stations were more prevalent. A hydrogen station at a track day would be perfect, lots of emissions free lapping

I live in SF BAyview area and I saw one parked and took pictures of it out curiosity so I can look the vehicle up online after listening to you talk about the goods and bads, I'm gonna pass on it. I have a Toyota hydrogen car and it's been satting for like 3 months now I'm gonna have to call AAA TO GET A JUMP. With that said. thanks for enlightening me about this vehicle b4 I go out and purchase it. I'll still with my Tesla's

How much does it cost to fuel this?
This is why I don't buy a hydrogen fuel car.
California’s largest H2 fuel retailer, True Zero, which operates 37 of the 53 hydrogen filling stations in the state, recently hiked the price of H2 at all its pumps to $36/kg, up from around $30/kg.
As recently as April 2021, it was charging just $13.14 per kilo.

Hydrogen fuel cells are what they are…zero interest as it’s still a battery electric vehicle with a electric motor …it just has the added benefit of a hydrogen fuel cell recharging it. Hydrogen combustion on the other hand provides us a way to keep our beautiful combustion engines, even v8’s. The mileage per tank takes a massive hit over gasoline but I’ll take that hit 24/7/365 to keep driving combustion engines long after gasoline is illegal. The future may not be so bleak after all

Toyota, Hyundai, and GM are still invested in the concept, but hydrogen fuel cell vehicles aren’t going to catch up to battery EVs, because hydrogen is nowhere near as efficient. It's just too steep a hill to climb in terms of consumer acceptance, and EV charging station infrastructure can already get you across the country and are growing rapidly in suburban America. It should ne noted that unlike EVs that can be fully charged at home in 9 hours, the NEXO's 5 minute charging time is for the small battery cussion between the cell power output and the motor demand.
