  • *New Video - My First Soft Top Surfboard! • First Soft Top Surfboa...
    I recently got some footage of myself surfing (see it here! • Rob Machado Seaside & ... ) and noticed that my backhand bottom turn was nonexistent. So I grabbed some cones and took my SmoothStar Filipe Toledo #77 surfskate board to my local park and did some drills. I truly believe the only way to get better is to study footage so I filmed the session and am sharing it here in case it helps you out too. *Side note this was also a test for my new Movo Edge-DI wireless microphone system for iPhone. Pretty stoked with how it worked even without the windscreen that I forgot to bring with me. Thanks for watching! #surfskate #smoothstar #filipetoledo77

    Nice, Ben! Something that really helps me out on the waves when rotating my shoulders is imagining that your eyes are on your chest and flipping my chest as I open up my shoulders. I find it helps immensely with a frontside cutback and a backside bottom turn. Keep these videos coming!

    I just picked up my SmoothStar Toledo #77 today. I am so excited. In the shop, I stood on the board but I couldn’t make it move. Half an hour later in the car park, I managed to ‘pump’ my board and it was moving (albeit slowly). The speed got better later and I was pretending that I could my surf skateboard “flow” 😂😂. I think I need lessons. I got my SmoothStar on impulse because I am surfing much less now. I am worst now. Feels strange being 50 years but acting like a young teenager when I hold my surf skateboard. I haven’t stood on a skateboard since I was 17. Hope my surfing improves, that’s the goal of buying my SmoothStar.

      Haha great story…and wow you bought one in an actual shop? Where was it? That seems rare, well done. Congrats and yes it takes time, I was the same, stood on it and nothing was happening. But with time, effort and a lot of help from TH-cam, you will be ripping up concrete waves soon! Thanks for watching 🙏

    Right on Brotha, started surfing a little earlier this year and absolutely fell in love with it. I'm 17 from socal and just picked up a smoothstar and its a total gamechanger. I feel like my pumping and top and bottom turns have gotten much better and as graum-ish as it sounds, I still find that my pop up is my most inconsistent part. Just wondering if you had any struggles with your pop up when you first started and what you did to kinda get past that. Has nothing to do with fitness on my end just the actual pop up is 50/50 for me

    • @BenConley
      @BenConley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Dude! I truly believe the pop up is the single most important thing when it comes to getting better at surfing because it all starts there. Its hard enough when I execute a good pop up to work on pumping and carving so a bad pop up gives me no chance at all. I think about my pop up every session and practice on dry land as much as possible. Like all the time. I even started yoga to improve flexibility (particularly in my hips) just because I know it will help my pop up and surfing in general. I think if I started surfing as a kid it might be more second nature but because I started as an adult I really have to work on it. My biggest problem is rushing. I get too excited to get up and get going and my technique breaks down. When I rush, I don’t allow myself to push my chest up to its highest point before pulling my legs through. So what happens is I scrape my front knee on the board because I’m trying to pull my legs through too quickly (like I have a hunched back, versus a nice cobra pose with my chest up). For me my best pops are when I think about it in two steps - 1. push my chest up 2. pull my legs through. But man, I start frothing so bad when a wave comes that I forget and try to do it all at once and that’s when I hit my knee and I don’t land exactly where I need to. So the only way for me is to practice on dry land so I build that automatic muscle memory once I get in the ocean. It’s hard for me to think about it when I’m actually surfing because I’m having too much fun. Hope that helps some, thanks for watching!

    Ben, what Carver truck do you prefer? The CX or the C7. I seen where a lot of people enjoy the CX but just wanted your opinion because if I remember correctly you have both. I commented the other day on stepping back on the board.. I meant the Seaside.. lol. I have to get me some cones..

    • @BenConley
      @BenConley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The C7 is the closest to the SmoothStar range of motion but not the same. The CX has the least range of motion, seems better for tricks and skateparks (not that I do tricks or skate at skateparks much)

    This is such a great video man, it's good to see someone actually working on their surfing and seeing their learning progress, and a ton of explanation along with it.
    That board looks amazing and I'm so tempted to get one, but I love my carver Taylor knox c7 so much I'll feel like I'm cheating on it 😂 is it really that much better? great video man 👊

    • @BenConley
      @BenConley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for watching glad it helps! My buddy has the Taylor Knox and loves it. Beautiful board. Not sure if 'better' is the right word but it's definitely different. I actually just jumped back on my Carver Haedron No. 6 /C7 a few days ago after a long long time on the SmoothStar. The difference is night and day! I went to lean into a turn on the Carver and almost fell off because the rail to rail is so much more responsive on the SmoothStar. I actually liked it because it felt like going from a shortboard to a longboard so it feels like I have two distinct boards in the quiver. Carver is also great for running errands around town because of the stability, much easier to push!

    • @nadster76

    Ben, Step back on the tail of the board a little bit more and that should help that bottom turn. A tail pad could help you out with that by giving you a reference point for your back foot. You looking good man. I've been working on my SmoothStar as well. Not quite there yet but it's fun. I need to generate more speed so that's my priority now.

      @@BenConley I think he's referring to your surfboard, putting your back foot right at the back of the surfboard, If I could add my 2 cents, also you could jump and throw your arms up as part of your popup, especially on small waves. Same with some of you other turns on the board throwing both your arms forward which you can practice on the smoothstar.

    How do you transfer all this to a wave? I can do all this on the ground but a wave has another dimension. And on your footage you are not surfing the pocket that's why you loose speed. Thanks!

      @BenConley  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s not easy that’s for sure. There’s nothing like riding a wave except riding a wave. But surfskating at least allows me to practice little things and every little bit helps! Yes gotta stay in the pocket, thank you!

    I think you need to keep working on compression. As surfers, we need to be really smooth with our transitions, dropping, then pushing through the turns (each turn, bottom and top as well as pumping). You did some good ones around 4.30 and on.

      I'm right handed, an Orthodox fighter and a goofy skater. I think that when I first started skateboarding, whoever was teaching me was goofy and I just picked it up that way. probably also why it took so long to feel natural on a board. I am I'm the process of cross training myself to skate regular, and Muay Thai has me regularly switching to southpaw in the middle of combos. I have heard that only 2 percent of the population have discrepancies like this. it is somewhat more unique though to have two different stances on different boards because of how similar the sports are.

    • @grandmaxtarkin3567
      @grandmaxtarkin3567 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      the hardest part in skating regular for me is the pushing. I can surf skate regular (somewhat) by just pumping but when I step off it gets wierd lol, and I still push when initially getting speed and I footbreak. I'd say just keep messing with both and switching it up, you'll definitely gain balance and board/ body consciousness
