    VICE News reporter Simon Ostrovsky tells the full story of his abduction and captivity in eastern Ukraine by pro-Russia forces.
    On Monday April 21st, VICE News reporters Simon Ostrovsky and Freddie Paxton were stopped at a checkpoint by armed pro-Russia forces loyal to the self-proclaimed mayor of Sloviansk, Vyacheslav Ponomarev. They were pulled from their car, along with three other journalists they were traveling with. After a thorough search and questioning, Paxton and the three other journalists were released. Ostrovsky was held in a basement cell where he was blindfolded, beaten, and accused of being a spy. For days, his whereabouts were unknown, which sparked a furor among journalists in the region and people from around the world who have been following his work. On Thursday, April 24 Simon was suddenly released onto the streets of Sloviansk with little explanation.
    In this dispatch, Simon tells the story of his abduction, his days in captivity, and why he thinks he was targeted by "mayor" Ponomarev.

    Without knowing any facts, you easily can see that those in charge and those who gave the interview (pro-Russian forces) are more crime related dudes and mercenaries than army guys. For those who speak Russian its not hard to notice their
    uneducated, angry and overconfident way of speech. This kind of situation reminds me the era after soviet union, when gang mobs took over governments factories and took protection in the private sector and eventually were called the "business-men" and got acknowledged by the government as a legit businessman. That is the way Russia run thing, just look at the gangster they placed to lead Chechnya (Akhmad Kadyrov). You'll see that when this conflict is over, those gangsters will be the mayors of the Russian-occupied cites.

      And there you have it; the simplest explanation to the current oligarchy adopted in Russia. Mobsters becoming KGB/FBS agents, rising the ranks through eliminating authority and blackmailing their own, scaring actual business man and making them to give their businesses to them and eliminating any and all competition via violence. New generation of future oligarchs were created in Chechnya to compensate those that have betrayed Putin on the past several years, which is the sole reason why Russia actually got in there.

      I'll explain it to you: what you don't realize is that situation in Ukraine is pretty fcked up. Illegitimate government using all means to suppress those who have other views and don't support them. So many leaders are missing. Ukrainian pocket mass media is owned by oligarchs and spreading absolute nonsense 24/7. It's a war! Now put yourself into these people places.. What happened to Simon is really unfortunate, but not as bad as it could be. Western mass media and governments are sticking their nose into foreign country's business like their own, that's why people on edge and so nervous about anything that could sabotage their cause.

    • @admubs3696
      @admubs3696 10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      overbe what I was trying to say is much more simpler than that. I'll admit that probably all the media outlets that I get information from are biast against Russia. HOWEVER, I think there is no political situation that warrants suppressing free speech and detaining journalists. Let's just assume Russia is right and all these journalists are lying through their teeth about the situation. I seriously doubt that but if they were lying, threatening, beating and detaining journalists isn't the right way to counter those lies. The pro-Russians in comment sections are usually pretty bad at arguing just because their only argument seems to be "Western media is lying to you" which is not well supported. I just want to see them explain why detaining and even torturing a journalist before having any evidence to even suggest he is a spy is right. The Russian government are just a bunch of thugs. Not saying anyone else isn't but they definitely are.

Not fairly reported at all, even though yes, some important moments, that actually disprove his idea of anti-Russia and anti-Putin were not cut off. Respect for that, but some not bright people just make conclusions out of the report heading and do not use their brain to make their own conclusions... The aim of a good journalism is to not show one's own believes.. It has to be 100% neutral to be as fair as it possibly could be

    And here we go Again, looking through the comments, we have all the conspiracy theorists. Saying that Simon was lying, when he was talking to the reporter. I mean for fucks sake, look at his eyes, he cannot make eye contact, he is bursting out, he is red in his face, and he keeps on saying and. He was having a hard time saying those Things. If he was lying, he would be taking his time with his Words, having more pauses. I do not think he was lying. I think he went through some shit, and he came out to tell the story. And now a bunch of anti-westerners are coming to call him a liar, because what he is saying, is not excatly making them look good.

      ya that seems what it looks like to me, ive been following him since the 7th vid he posted and because he is an american is why he was held , almost for sure, the amount of cia and fbi plants in the country im not surprised he was held and interrogated. i think hes been giving a fairly unbiased reporting of the situation, which also could be why hes been targeted but more than anything else, the forces in sloviansk knew that ukrainian troops were coming, they already hit donetsk, and because the mayor of donetsk is being held now by the ukrainian troops, they wanted to find out if he was a cia plant. or if he was sending deployment pics etc to right sector or the ukranian military , if u were about to be attacked by 15,000 troops and tanks (thats what ive heard is mobilized now) you'd probably hold a few people hostage to. ( not saying that its OK!)

      Well said, Marcus! The tired old notion that not looking someone in the eye means you are lying has been comprehensively disproven by research in the past 20 years or so. Liars are more likely to fix people in the eyes in order to 'look' honest. People telling truthful accounts of events are usually too focused on their thoughts to concentrate on staring the other person in the eye, which can be a distraction from thinking about what they want to talk about.

    This is 2014 and some people think we're still in the cold war. Wake up, 1989 was a long time ago, the Soviet Union collapsed, the Berlin Wall was torn down, the few communist countries that still exist are the poorest in the world (North Korea, Cuba). Don't bother to call me "fascist, imperialist, CIA agent" and all those cliches, you only think in white (comrade) or black (fascist) for you there's no middle. I live in Venezuela and we are experiencing the so-called "socialism" in first hand: lies, corruption, hunger and huge lines of people to buy toilet paper. The Ukrainian people have my sympathies, don't let these communist hypocrites rule your country.

      China is a communist socialist state and yet coming from the poorest in the 60s to the 2nd largest economy now it proves your story wrong and also it will over take your mighty America in a year or 2. Democracy has as much lying and corruption, there is no perfect government system, you just need good, dedicated and honest people such as Putin and Jinping to run it and the fact that you don't realise that shows how much your country must still learn to take initiative and stand up for yourselves or maybe you enjoy the gay propaganda.

      Will you stop with the " pro Russian " garbage? Everything is a lot more complicated than that. There are tons of Rebels who identify as Ukrainians, myself included. My problems with what happened in 2014 didn't start with my surrogate brothers- Oleg Tsarev and Pavel Gybarev- and what happened to them. They started ages ago when the Ukrainian government developed this idiotic obsession with Petlyura, Bandera and Shukhevich, knowing full well that those clowns are toxic and divisive, that at least half of Ukraine doesn't want them as national heroes. Petlyura's scum almost massacred my adoptive Jewish mother's family during the 1918 Civil War in Kremenchyg. My great grandfather was almost lynched and survived because people got to him in time, my grandmother was raped. And I'm supposed to be OK with visiting Kiev and walking down the Petlyura Street or some such??? Are you guys for real?

    Fun fact: 2 years ago a number of polls were conducted in Crimean predominantly Russian-speaking high schools. Over 80% of kids ages 16-17 indicated that they favor closer ties to EU and Western-styled government rather than a trade agreement with Russia. Once Putin's generation dies out and these kids (and kids in the rest of Russia) get to power, the Russia as we know it will cease to exist.
    Given its size and diversity Russia cannot be easily governed with anything but an authoritarian regime. Therefore, Russia will most likely split up yet again into smaller sovereign states along the ethnic lines. Give it 15-20 years.
