Having to call my wife and tell her that her county was being invaded by Russia was devastating. It was akin to how it felt for me on September 11th. The whole family was drained of every ounce of joy. A year later and the people of Ukraine still stand tall. Слава Україні!
September 11 is nowhere on the spectrum compared to whats happened in ukraine. Something doesn't jive here with the way this whole thing is playing out, how can the world stand by and allow this? Why did the allies say NO tanks when tens of thousands were being slaughtered last year and now all of a sudden just decide too late we're sending Tanks to help?
The sheer balls of the Ukrainian people in defending their homeland is something that should inspire everyone. They've shown to the entire world that Russia's military power was largely bravado.
Let's just all hope that western countries will keep a steady stream of weapons, ammo and aid going into Ukraine and Ukrainians themselves will dispense all that where it's needed the most. Without that, complete victory won't be possible. Much love and respect from Poland 🇵🇱 🇺🇦
Balls huh? Then why did so many men flee at the beginning? It's your duty to protect your homeland and way of life. You do it for your survival. You do it for your children's survival. You fight standing so you don't die on your knees.
Any one from Russia will be treated just like every nAZI was after WWII, they will never be able to wash off the shame and the crimes their country committed in their name, that they refused to believe , No matter where they go in the world they will pointed out, like the Illegitimate US president that is insulted and booed by protester everywhere he goes in the US
Thank you for providing coverage of Ukraine going all the way back to 2013 and earlier. Being able to watch the nation struggle with its identity and sovereignty while slowly transforming over the last decade has been invaluable. Simon Ostrovsky's courageous early work was especially informative; it's the main reason I wasn't as clueless about the Donbas as others around me during the initial stages of the full invasion last year. Keep it up! 🇺🇦
The American taxpayer. 40% of whom are people of color who have to waste their money on these people. Where was the empathy when Russia bombed Aleppo? The sanctions when America raped Iraq and Libya?

The Great Patriotic War took an estimated 27 million lives. Survivors of this war suffered for decades of PTSD. This led to widespread use of alcohol and suicides of many men. The ratio of women to men was 25:1. In 2010, Ukraine had 14:1 ratio women to men. Both sides will suffer from the unseen scars of combat. The longer this war continues the greater the number of combatants and non combatants suffering from both physical and psychological scars long after this war ends.

I know I shouldn't judge, especially from my safe home in my country that isn't being bombed, but here I go anyhow. If her parents have no where else to go I can see staying, but the whole "this is our city so we're not leaving" thing they said also made me sad and a little mad. There's no shame in taking their child somewhere that isn't being bombed even if it means becoming a refugee in another country like many other Ukrainians have done. I think it's better to leave and live so you can come back to rebuild once the fighting stops. Everything about this nightmare save the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people is heartbreaking.
@@DennisMoore664 i do agree with you, but at the same time i can see where they come from. if america was being invaded i would think alot of americans would stay. we love our country same as with ukraines. i suppose some people would rather stay then be chased out of there homes. also there are a lot of refugees from this war, it can be hard to get into refugee camps and especially with family. it could also just be expensive, there is also that chance that maybe they are not taking the war too seriously, the world is filled with stubborn people. but that’s just my opinion. like you said i’m not ukraine so i don’t really know the situation.
@@MrJosh066717 well you see it’s not that simple just packing up you’re family and leaving the country. you need money, and it’s not exactly cheap to travel to a new country and just start a new. most of the time you see families only send their children away, cause it’s too expensive to send and support their whole family. you try stepping into their shoes before posting dumb comments. you want to know what’s reckless? bombing civilian infrastructure! these people shouldn’t have to leave their homes!
@@MrJosh066717 I agree, she's a child and she has a lot of future ahead of her. Staying in that area where they know that they can be bombed in any moment is a bad idea, I know that they care a lot about they're home but living in that area is not living. Staying in that place just means you have accepted what is going to happen instead of finding a way to make a new future. It really saddens me of the situation the family had gone through and I understand where they are coming from but they have to realize that lives are more important than a home and they can always have a chance to rebuild of what they can lose because they are alive and they have they're own control of they're family.
Where is Simon O when the world needs him most? His early Vice era coverage of violent Russian aggression was truly the best reporting ever done in this area. Instead we get yearly updates when we should be getting weekly updates.
Glad everyone thought it went by quick. That was the longest year of my life because I had no clue the amount of involvement NATO would get into (currently in the IRR and wasn’t sure if I’d get recalled). That was a brutal summer just waiting for one side to make a move after Russia retreated from the offensive in the North.
In the weeks after the Russian invasion there was a video online of an old Ukrainian woman giving handfuls of sunflower seeds to the young Russian soldiers who had invaded her town. When asked what she was doing she explained she was helping to beautify the countryside by planting seeds in the pockets of the Russian soldiers since they would soon be killed and buried in Ukraine.
I saw it too. Also saw a hay field planted into a sunflower field last spring and summer. Brave woman to stand up to tyranny like that. I will never again see sunflower plants the same again. God Bless Ukranian people
The truth is most of those guys she gave the sunflower seeds are dead or wounded. Entire BTGs were decimated, some up to 90%. There is not much left of the originina 1st guards, 76th VDV, etc etc.
The entire country of Russia should be put on trial for War Crimes, everyone in Russia, sanction Russia until it totally fails, then take it over by NATO countries and put the population on trial,
VICE is the company that got me into street and war photography. your shots, the way you tell a story through the lens is absolutely amazing. keep it up
I feel for the civilians the most, just like all other conflicts in the world it's the civilians who pay the heaviest price and that saddens me but I'm glad for the warriors who are there to defend against Russia's aggression
I suspect a lot of the buildings and forests hide a huge number of bodies and skeletons as lots of people didn't want to leave or didn't have the money to do so, so just random bombs, cold, hunger, looters, r*pists, and random soldiers shooting at everything.. all those collapsed buildings may very well have skeletons of 20 people hiding in the basement..
Nothing will change until we establish a central government that oversees all nations. Which will not change until the soldiers of all countries refuse to fight for a cause that brings trauma and destruction to the loser and wealth to the winners who aren’t willing to even fight in the wars they start
Have you seen videos of the Ukrainian Arny just grabbing any man they can find and forcing them into meat grinder thats already ended the lives of 150,000 men on the Ukrainian side alone? There is no wining for the Ukraine, just lots of pointless death. Its truly sad and the US Government and my fellow retarded citizens wave flags of a country that can't find on a map and cheer on the death of young men. The worst part of these war documentaries is seeing the children and pets affected. There's something innocent, naive, pure about kids and animals and its absolutely brutal to see what war does to those who cant defend themselves.
Any kind of civilian and yes to some extent pets make me sad. I thought it was funny near the beginning of the documentary when people are literally fleeing Ukraine they showed someone had their dog on a leash and the dog was wearing clothes. Bruh, you're getting bombed and you took time to dress the dog? I dunno, I just thought that was funny. People are so weird. =)
I guess for u seeing the videos of men being shot and blown up doesnt matter if the dog is safe thank zelensky for not sending a single bus to evacuate anyone from the east
And the mental trauma the scares they will be cursed to carry the rest of their life, and for what, the ego and greed of one man and the spineless ass kissers he surrounds himself with, ah we haven't seen this enough God history keeps repeating itself
For real. A few months ago I saw a video of a returning civilian walking around a recently liberated city. About half way in the 30 min video they saw a small black dog, gasped and said, "Those bastards." When the dog got closer you could see a "V" had been burned on its head starting between it's eyes. One of its little eyes was so milky I swear it must have been blinded. For some reason, every time I think of the war now that little dog pops in my head. Not that I don't care about people, but just seeing animals that probably had homes just end up wandering in a war zone with little help (and yes I understand people come first and understand why) is so sad.
I honestly don't understand why so many people criticize and dismiss "Vice"... I mean yes, sometimes they can be biased. But you gotta respect their hustle, they jump right into the middle of a situation covering the story right at ground zero instead of repeating 2nd hand information from the safety of a T.V studio.
The main criticisms I always heard was skepticism that they were in places they claimed to be, mainly due to the video backgrounds, which led folks to believe it was stock footage, and the camera angles, which rarely showed both reporter and interviewee together. Lately they seem to have done a bit more to make things look better. I certainly hope it's all authentic. The writing is excellent though! And the topics are spot on! May this nightmare for Ukraine be over, overnight.
Thank you VICE for always showing the real disasters in the world and how cruel war can be. I’m praying for Ukraine every day. I know that doesn’t do anything but I don’t know what I can do. 😭 💙💛💙💛

Same thing. Russia is slowly pushing forward. Bahkmut is in Russian control, it's completely bombed out. First annex the Crimea with little green men. Then give military weapons to separatist extremists. These deaths are on Putin's hands, not Ukraine's. None of this would have happened if Putin wasn't the aggressor. Putin is Nato's best recruiter. Putin is 100% responsible for any expansions in Nato. Without Putin, there is no Nato. Also civilians were killed on both sides in the civil war spurred on by armed separatists. 14K civilians from both sides, 90% in the first year 2014. What changed after that 1st year? Nato got involved in 2015 training and arming Ukraine so it could defend itself from Russian-backed separatists. In order to get weapons and training, Ukraine's forces were cleaned up. Forces were expected to adhere to Nato-like standards in order to get equipped. Which is why there are so few civilian deaths in the two years prior to Russia's invasion.

With some luck, they'll collapse outright.
Putin has twice as many able-bodied men of age to throw into the meat grinder. They're untrained, but they're able-bodied and disposable in his mind. The sheer balls of the Ukrainian people in defending their homeland is something that should inspire everyone. They've shown to the entire world that Russia's military power was largely bravado.
Lol... fool... the entire west + ukraine(money, intillegence, weapons etc. you name it) vs Russia... if only this proves how resilient Russia is...
Let's just all hope that western countries will keep a steady stream of weapons, ammo and aid going into Ukraine and Ukrainians themselves will dispense all that where it's needed the most. Without that, complete victory won't be possible.

The Great Patriotic War took an estimated 27 million lives. Survivors of this war suffered for decades of PTSD. This led to widespread use of alcohol and suicides of many men.

Any kind of civilian and yes to some extent pets make me sad.

@@kevindamarray7463 Lame russian propaganda talking points. Russia invaded, so they are at fault.
Wow, thank you for keeping us informed about the war that has been mostly forgotten in most news cycles
You don’t have reliable news outlets then . I see this conflict everyday .
Hahaha
Are you fucking kidding me?

Maybe I'm weird, but I hear about the Ukraine War everyday. But to be fair, I pretty much *only* listen to NPR when I'm in my car and listen to the headlines at the top of every hour.
one thing i do like about vice is that they have been keeping everyone updated since 2014.
Unimaginable how it would be to live like this. These people are just surviving as I'm sure they are not even receiving a weekly paycheck. I hope the war is over for them soon so they can try and start to rebuild. This should have never happened.
The war could be over tomorrow but Zelensky has been instructed by his handler Biden from the beginning not to negotiate.
I remember watching this happening last year. Never would I have guessed Russia would still be in Ukraine one year later. It was evident from the first week, Russia was too dumb to mount effective assault tactics.
losing half of their manpower and equipment in one year
anyone happen to know where the guy at 33:22 ended up?
Man vice always bringing that 🔥
This is Russia's War, not "Putin's War". Russian people have allowed this to happen without protest.

True.
Out of fear of being thrown in prison and or disappearing completely. Watch the TH-cam channel 1420. He's a Russian citizen getting opinions on this war and the state of Russia. In many cases citizens are scared to even tell the camera their true opinion. You never know, a mass protest could possibly work and possibly not. Change comes from the top & I don't see any change anytime soon. Sending love to all kind-hearted people, straight from the USA.
We do not blame the people of Russia, maybe even not Russian people calling for “special operations” because they have been lied to, they don’t understand that Putin is running his own war at the cost of EVERYTHING for Ukrainians. Unacceptable.
It’s hard to overstate just how dark this war, and all wars in general are. I don’t know why we keep doing this to each other.
incredible work
I’m weeping for you Ukraine. The world won’t allow you to be robbed and striped naked of your right to sovereignty. I support you and the world supports you too. You’re the side of justice!
What world are you talking about? The majority of people on this planet do not care what happens in ukraine. They are more worried about eating and how to eat the next day. 8 billion people on this planet.
@@dutchmaster5637 sorry youre part if the heartless few, get help
@@dutchmaster5637 It matters to me and I'm not Ukrainian, and the outcome of this matters for the world. Standing for one righteous cause is better than standing for nothing at all, and one struggle does not negate another. This kind of selfish logic is what makes Putin and other warmongers think they can just do whatever they want. Do the world a favor and keep your useless opinions to yourself.
