    On International Workers Day, pro-Russia protesters marched through central Donetsk in eastern Ukraine calling for a referendum on the region's future. Some want to join Russia, while others to become a federal republic inside Ukraine - all want to separate from the interim government installed after the Euromaidan revolution. Around 3,000 protesters first gathered on Lenin Square before marching on to lay flowers at a WW1 memorial. The protesters chanted in support of the planned May 11th referendum and denounced the government in Kiev as a "fascist junta" while waving Stalin flags. The crowd wasn't entirely friendly, with one journalist, who was accused of being a "provocateur," was bundled into a car and driven away by protesters in body armor, his destination unknown.
    The march moved on to a police station where they were able to negotiate installing the Donetsk republic flag before speakers called to take over the nearby prosecutors' office.
    Outside the office, around 60 cops in riot gear were formed up, protecting the entrance. The protesters called for the prosecutor to come and meet them, but after five minutes clashes suddenly broke out. Stones were thrown and the police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets. Eventually the police were forced back by the onslaught, and there was a brief lull while the wounded were evacuated and the captured police were let go.
    The crowd then moved to the back of the building, where about 100 police were gathered. Very quickly the protesters were able to hop the fences and force open the gate, surrounding the police and eventually forcing them to surrender. Police were then humiliatingly forced to hand over their shields, helmets, and batons before being lead out through the crowds, getting kicked and spat upon as they went.
    The day before, acting Ukrainian President Oleksandr Turchynov said his government is "helpless" in dealing with the security situation in eastern Ukraine. The events on May 1st clearly backed that up. The police had little fight in them, and morale was surely worsened after such a humiliating clash. Today though, the Ukrainian government re-launched an operation to take the separatist stronghold of Slovyansk. Is this the start of a government fight back?

      Im Muffy Right, saying let's storm this and that building publicly, then saying that they have a peaceful protest there, throwing peaceful rocks and spraying peaceful teargas at the defending police, the police were shooting rubber bullets with shotguns while they were being attacked, if they would use live ammo, Russia would send troops in. Peaceful protesting is nowadays storming government buildings being a non-native person trying to force their power on the indigenous people? I should go to Moscow then and do the same thing, if they shoot me, I'll ask for NATO to send troops there(sarcasm).

      Ugh, the cops didn't do anything until the protestors started beating them up and throwing things at them. The cops had to defend and they did and thankfully they have a smart leader and decided that it's not worth fighting against a mass of mindless idiots with no regards about anything. Hopefully these guys go back to Ukraine and get prepared to fight against this scum another day with military backing.

If you are truly fighting for your cause, then stand up for your actions and don't pull the 'they started it' bullshit when you're the ones who were the first to become aggressive. Especially when you can clearly see that a majority of the prosecutors weren't even fighting back but instead were being pushed around and wrongfully attacked.

      We are told that Russia is an aggressive, imperialist power and that NATO's concerns are about opposing the Russian ‘threat’. But I looked at the map the other day and while I could see lots of countries close to (and bordering) Russia that were members of NATO, the US-led military alliance whose members have bombed and attacked many countries in the last 15 years, I could not see any countries close to America that were part of a Russian-military alliance, or any Russian military bases or missiles situated in foreign countries bordering or close to the US. Yet Russia, we are told, is the ‘aggressive one’. I'm confused. Can anyone help me? rt.com/op-edge/west-leaders-ukraine-democracy-600/?fb_action_ids=519999164778015&fb_action_types=og.likes&fb_ref=.U1Gs9Z1zVpg.like&fb_source=feed_opengraph&action_object_map={%22519999164778015%22%3A606382029451820}&action_type_map={%22519999164778015%22%3A%22og.likes%22}&action_ref_map={%22519999164778015%22%3A%22.U1Gs9Z1zVpg.like%22}

    • @navtium
      @navtium 10 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      There is a difference. NATO doesn't go around annexing countries and territories just because they feel like it. Russia has plenty of shit of it's own, but it's mostly kept under the rug by preventing press coverage and by spreading false informational (their interventions in Chechnya, Ossetia, Georgia, etc.). And that's the main difference between Russia and the west. At least the west is a bit more transparent. At least the west respects human rights.... things that cannot be said for Russia.
      The main reason they haven't engaged in anything bigger is simply because the country was left in almost total economic ruin after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

  • @leksious

    These people seem to genuinely believe they are fighting against fascism. In such condition separatism is rational. Western Ukraine has strong motivations not to roll over in the long term when it comes to Eastern Ukraine's secession.
      The chances of this not breaking out into full-scale civil war seems infinitesimally small at this point - neither side can/will back down.

    You have to wonder how that kind of thing would work here in the US. Bundy Ranch might be a good example, but there are a lot more variables in America than there are in Ukraine. I mean, you've got either pro-Kiev or Anti-Kiev(and either federalists or separatists) as well as the ones who are still managing to not take a side.
    In the US, you've got all sorts of groups with their own agendas based on race, religion(or lack thereof) economics, and politics. There are groups that subscribe to independent political and economic systems that hate each other(more sectionalist than nationalist) and you've got collectivist groups that really hate each other(anyone in the spectrum of socialism and fascism).

      I think the fascists was aimed at the government in Kiev, the police force is a extension of that.
