On July 5, the eastern Ukrainian town of Sloviansk was recaptured by the Ukrainian military, driving out pro-Russia rebels and ending their three-month occupation. VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky travels back to Sloviansk and visits the cell in which he was held for days by those rebels in April. The city is in shambles and residents are struggling to find food and water despite a considerable humanitarian effort. The pro-Russia rebels have retreated to Donetsk, but the Ukrainian government is determined to pursue its anti-terror operation until there are no rebels left.

Ever since Simon Ostrovsky was captured and released, there seems to be more and more Russians targeting these videos to try and change viewer opinions. Why would you even bother? The whole point of a good documentary is to capture real events and present them in a non-biased perspective. Even before he was captured, he tried to interview Pro-Russian soldiers and they were assholes to him. On one occasion, they captured him saying he had a knife on him when he was unarmed. Do not think that he has not tried to get a Russian point of view on this.
Trying to appeal to people's commonsense is more like it. I doubt many Russians or Ukrainians actually watch VICE, not that they have something against the content, but there are many outlets that provide up-to-date coverage in their languages.
Nope, Westerners are the majority on these videos, which is why 100% of the comments are in English.

So sad, How it has played out. Its the everyday people like this who die and suffer for the greed of the powerful.
I've watched Simon for some time without ever knowing about his abduction or this backstory My already high regard for Simon has increased substantially.
That old woman at the end, poor thing. She's been alone for years, she's seen the world change so many times, been through much more trauma than most people are, then she gets caught up in a war of petty politics and land grabbing. Just look at the people outside, they don't see one another as Ukrainians anymore, just pointing fingers like children while old women at the end are lucky to be alive.
Too many people are dying over this, and neither side seems to have intentions on stopping until the other is obliterated. What a shame, because the major victims are the ones caught in the crossfire, and in the end superheated lead projectiles and explosives don't have political beliefs.

***** these are 'culturally' Russians, most of them are citizens of Ukraine, with little exclusions for volunteers. Sadly Russia does not interfere, as formally its Ukrainian internal affair, and all Russia could do is wait, like USSR did in 1941, because otherwise Russia/USSR would be called an aggressor and could be treated accordingly. Actually nothing would happen if American owners of Ukrainian pseudoelite did not let them do what they are doing now. Its nonsense for any non African or South-Asian country nowadays, but it fucking happens in the middle of Europe, and everyone feels ok about it.
This is probably the best and saddest dispatch I've seen. I felt bad for the old lady and all the people that lost a lot during these events that should not have happened for one reason or another.
This ending had me left heartbroken. In every war you have people fighting over their beliefs, but it's people like this old lady who stands to lose the most. People who are passive, and don't want any part of these dick-measuring monstrosities. I'm not trying to pick side here, as I think both sides have their reasons .. My concern is with the civilians caught in the line-of-fire.
In Soviet Russia, man who is bound and blindfolded while being beaten is pitiful, not the men taking pride in beating the bound man.

The Only side to blame for this mess are the Separatists. They brought this on themselves and the residents who supported them. The Lawful, government of Ukraine has every right to put down an armed resistance. If they had grievances, then they should have peacefully protested and brought their concerns up through the political process. I am sure the current government would not have shot Protestors, as the last one had done.
Edit: I have to add that I do feel horrible for the situation these people are in. In most cases, the apartments are their only "wealth". When the Soviet Union collapsed, these people were given ownership of the apartments in which they lived. I know from personal knowledge, that in many cases all these older people have are their apartments and a $200 a month pension from the government.
Its a horrible situation that these Ukrainians have been put in.

Correction: the overthrown government did not shoot the protesters. That's why they, you know, got overthrown. The current gov't DID turn a blind eye and had the police stand down/not intervene when protesters in Odessa were burned and gassed by yet-to-be-prosecuted far-right extremists. Neither is the current government open to any type of discussion about federalization. Just politics.

My heart goes out to that old lady at the end. She could have been any of our grandmothers. If I could, I'd fly her out here so she could stay with my family. It's actually so heartbreaking, I almost wanted to close the video. Hopefully they get more aid and the soldiers in the area can help out with the cleanup given the separatists have fled.

There are a lot of real people, too. I am not a troll, just someone who wants to see what is going on. Ostrovsky, in spite of the attacks on him here by various people on both sides, is, I think, a very honest guy, and pretty brave. He was threatened with death, beaten up multiple times, but remains a reporter. There is a model for a war journalist.

While watching all the past dispatches that mostly show the fighters, you tend to forget about the civilians that got effected. The last woman brought me to tears. I hope everything turns out alright in the end for her and all of the people effected by this senseless bullshit.

Well, I would think the people currently there are older cause all younger peoples (especially with families fled). While older people, such as the 90 year old women we see cannot mainly due to there age. Or further more, they feel the need to stay cause it's there home, and where would they go.

What type of government does this to their people though? was war the only option? couldn't they have used foot soldiers head on approach or was bombing and shelling the only way? Bloody hell there was no respect to the safety of civilians here and the civilians should charge them. If it was an Arab government which did this i am sure there would've been a NATO or American backed army to topple that existing government that ruled with an iron fist over its people........*from a non bias point of view but rather a humanitarian one*

Bullshit. You can't rush a fortified town with infantry unless you're prepared to lose loads of them. Besides; if you try, the damage would be much worse. Thing about soldiers is that they don't really want to die any more than anyone else, so if you start throwing them away, they'll mutiny. It's well documented that the (pro) Russians used to hide their mortar positions inside the city, so the Ukrainians either had to just sit still and get blown up or shoot back to show them that they couldn't count on human shields.
In the end the rebs had to abandon the city; not because they were bombed out of it, but because it got surrounded.
Nkakzola Africano From the humanitarian point of view, it would be best to put all ambitions aside and all weapons down, for either side. But they fight and use all kinds of weapon, the bombs are just less predictable and leave more noticeable marks.

This really wasn't a well fought victory for the naz.... Sorry, ukrainian army. The militia new that slaviansk would be impossible to defend against a full on assualt from the military since the city is soo big and to hard to defend will soo few numbers. The donbass people's militia is made up of teachers,doctors,lawyers,fathers,brothers and mothers aswell as ex army verterns, defected soldiers, Chechens,Ossetians Georgians and a few Cossacks that came to help from russia. With fewer that ~1000 defending slaviansk, a retreat was their best option. They retreated with hight hopes. They may have won this battle, but the war has just begun... SLAVA DONBASS!

Crimea has voted to be part of Russia multiple times, once after the dissolution of the Soviet Union and now. It's a Russian peninsula in terms of people, culture and language, that was occupied by Ukraine. There would be no reason to resist Russian military presence (which has been there for hundreds of years since it became part of the empire).
IlyZor Cool story bro. Voting to be a part of a dictatorship after their tanks have already illegally seized control isn't exactly a "free election". But it's what you Russians think an election means. Pointing a gun at you and saying "vote for Russia or I don't know, maybe my finger will slip" isn't democracy and the vote is meaningless.
And that Russian military presence was there under a lease, the Russians paid to have their presence there. The same could be said for Cuba and the United States, so I guess the US can take over Cuba.
The soldiers put it the best way. First the people cheered for separatists. Now they cheer for Ukrainian army. What else can they do?
Hopefully the president helps the city with more humanitarian aid as well as begging to rebuild infrastructure.

That is entirely true - Ukrainians in the beginnings of ww2 butchered Polish population in then eastern Poland lwow(lviv today) areas today Ukraine. This included women and children. Putin used this (exactly this) to invade Ukraine.
Most of them are hastily recruited. So they're not what you would call.. professional yet.

I know what you are all thinking when watching this, ans so am I. "How can the Ukrainians do this stuff, it's awful, innocent people died! I know. I feel this same way too. But that is how it is. That is how war is. Their is always collateral damage. Unintended targets, ect. Don't think that they are the only ones who have done this. The US also unintended killed many civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. That is just the way war is, and the way it will continue to be. Hard to see, but it's happened in every war. Very sad.
The only reason Civilian areas are bombed is because the cowardly tactic of seperatists is to hide within Civilian Areas. They can shoot indiscriminately at the army, but if the army tries to shoot back at Anti-aircraft missiles that have been taking down planes they will have casualties. This is the face of modern warfare.

Not really sure how you compare Ukraine with Iraq and Afghanistan. I dont claim I'm informed on the politics and the history between Ukraine->Russian tensions. I'm not even fully opposed to a referendum. However, the annexation of Crimea cost ukraine in the hundreds of billions worth of deposits of resources within the Ukraine seas. I think that such a referendum should happen through democracy and not gunpoint. Just the perspective of an outsider.
And I wasnt even addressing the right of civilians to overthrow their government. I was only specifically addressing the 10000000x claims that Ukrainians are murderers. I'll tell you what. How about the seperatists leave the city and shoot at them from a big park/forest outside the city. Watch how fast they get obliterated by air support. 100% of them would die in 30 seconds. No wonder civilians get hurt in the crossfire. Its because the shooters are hiding amongst civilians making it impossible to return fire without casualties.
This is what is crazy to me. RT (Russia Today), blasts the world with these propaganda stories about Ukrainians being murderers with there are civilian casualties and I'm left thinking. Are people really this stupid? How can they possibly return fire without hurting people.

2. How about to not blockade and shelling cities but start negotiations instead? Separatism in this region started when Kiev denied any negotiations with Dnetsk/Lugansk and started to use army and strange para-military units like "Azov" e.t.c..
3. There is a lot of propaganda from both sides. I am using very simple criteria to identify a murderer - who shots and kills innocents is a murderer. On the video above you sees ruined buildings with civilians. Who shelled them? This journalist is able to film the basement where he was kept by separatists. This is terrible. Will Russian journalists be able to film something like this? No, because they were killed by Ukrainian government forces - already 5 deaths.

Reality is, the people should be kicking the seperatists out of their houses and streets and voting to not allow them to setup entrenched positions within their homes.
If people allow the military in their homes to fight from a hidden position, they certainly dont DESERVE to be hit by bombs, but they cant really call it murder. Its not murder, its a casualty of war that they got themselves involved in.
Again, i feel for these people though, because if they have it shitty form their government I can see why they are calling for the referendum. I dont oppose their political position. But I am diametrically opposed to them calling it murder when from all intents and purposes it seems the majority of the residents open their homes to militant seperatists with open arms. and are allowing war to by run from their homes.

Finally they abandoned it, now civilians no longer have to get hit by inaccurate arty.
part of the problem was that. and part of the problem was them mortaring. near civilian location and expecting ukraine army filled with conscripts not to fire back. it's like hamas firing rockets at Israel and expecting them not to fire back. not that i agree with Israel or anything. i dont. but if hamas wants to be a real country and get upset about loses. then it needs to move those rockets underground firing location not fire from the middle of the city
MsTokies yeah, it's sad to hear about civilians dying because some soldiers are too scared to move away from their homes. If it's an occupation and their guerrillas I could understand but this was them just shooting from the town and if the Ukrainians ever fired back it was because they were fascists.

MsTokies they are a middle ground with the EU and the RF, and they do hold three major oil pipelines connecting Russia with Europe.
In my opinion they should join the EU, without them they will be threatened by Russia, again, and with Russia they'll become a puppet with some other Russian power hungry president like Putin.
