  • Back in the shop with more from our friends down under, Dobinsons, bringing us their entry level shock offering the monotube IMS... we've unboxed these steel-bodied height adjustable struts for a closer look.
    We've got an in-depth discussion here about all the features Dobinsons brings to the IMS line and why these shocks stand out from competition like the ever-popular Bilstein 6112 and give you a glimpse into what the installation process looks like on a 5th gen Toyota 4Runner.
    We'll be running and reviewing these dampers soon on another video so ya best subscribe now and if you've got questions in the meantime drop a comment below or hit us up at shocksurplus.com

    Have a set of IMS that I will be installing on my '03 4Runner/V8 soon. Replacing Bil 4600 and reusing the FJ springs I have. Looking for a better on road feel.

    Which is better dobinsons ims or fox 2.0? For daily city driving and occasional light off roading?

    I have a couple questions,, I want to upgrade the suspension on my 2020 Tacoma , I would like to try with bilsteins 6112front 5160 rear ,I want the 2 inch lift but I read that if you put the circlip on the highest position the ride is very stiff with bilsteins spring..so my question is .. can the dobinson spring can give me the 2inch of lift with the circlip in the lower position? How much of lift can I get with the dobinsons springs on bilsteins 6112? Or any recommendations ,, thanks

      Effective spring rate does not change between preload settings, the majority of the complaints related to the Bilsteins being stiffer at the higher settings have more to do with the fact that the have not lifted the rear and have effectively shifted load off the front struts onto the rear end. Thus having the effect of the front feeling stiffer since there simply is not as much weight on the front coils. The same thing happens if you run a leveling kit that uses spacers. Running a longer coil spring for the same lift height would have the same effective preload value as runnign the shorter Bilsteins with the spring seats higher and would have cause little to no change in ride quality

      It depends on how much lift you want in the front, but for the most part if the plan is only to run a light low pro bumper, you are probably best off running their standard weight front coils and adding about 1/8" - 1/4" of additional preload.

    I have a Westcott lift kit currently in my vehicle. Which exact setup would I need for the dobinson IMS. Currently the Westcott puts 3 front/1.25 rear. So far I really like that stance and want to replicate it with the dobsinson kit.

      On a 5G 4Runner will want their C59-302 coil springs and extended travel front struts (will need about 1/4" more preload from the base setting) and then you could run rear spring part number C59-238 for 0.75" with their 15mm spacer (PS59-4025)

      All bilsteins 6112 come with a set of springs already(600 spring rate) or whole assembly mounted for you. you could opt for hd spring rate 650 or 700 with additional cost. I believe # 8-10 circlip will net you around 1.9in lift
      Bilstein 5100 you have to use your stock spring or aftermarket lift spring and top hat. if you just get the shock itself. The higher setting you go with stock spring, the harsher and stiffness your ride will be.

      @@anthonycha8857 yea the blisteins come with the springs but people say the ride is too stiff I the circlip is in the high position and to get 2 inch of lift the circlip needs to be in the highest position ..so I read some post that if you swap the springs for a dobison o eibach to the bilsten 6112 you can get 2 inch with the circlip on de lower position ,, but Idk is is true that’s the reason why I asked probably this guys know more about it

    What is the tool name to hold the spring and put the shock in at 9:23?

    High caster does NOT move the wheel away from the cab mount. High caster UACs move the wheel CLOSER to the cab mount to improve tracking on straight always which is lost when lifted above 2”. The ONLY way to push the wheel away from the cab mount is by moving the lower control arm forward. And you are limited right there. Hence why the SPCs are the best. Another good UAC is the Accutune which are the designed to push the LCA forward to push the wheel away from the cab mount. I highly suggest getting familiar with this.

      Arms with higher caster built in reposition the cup angle rather than move it back so they do actually push it forward, however what you are explaining is why you set the lower cams first with the SPCs. Any billet arm or arm that has adjustment at the frame pivot will allow you to make equal adjustments on the upper and lower to push the front tires forward without running as high of a caster value or in the cases of some arms allow you to move alignment spacers to shift the whole arm position fore and aft

    How do they ride?

    • @ShockSurplus
      @ShockSurplus  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Great! A little softer and more forgiving than the Bilstein 6112s and 5160s but a little tighter riding and hanlding than something like and Eibach Stage 2 or 2R.
