I have missed u,I love getting to see the old patreon videos because I don't have the money to join.1 thing back in the early days that I found is that there was no tv so the people were board & seemed to love to see gore.they would take a picnic to hangings & during the civil war while there were battles people would be on the sidelines having a picnic watching.its so odd.i have seen videos of this house.it is so creepy.the ax marks r still visible. for the same reason so many are interested in true crime. It was a big news story and the person wanted a souvenir to make them seem to have special knowledge of the case. Yes it is gruesome but if your life had been spent farming amd raising animals to slaughter for food, blood and gore may not have bothered them in the same way we who have only seen the end result of meat packaged in our grocery stores.
Do you think those who look for crime scene photos online are as warped as whoever picked up the piece of skull? Has it been established as to who took the bone? Could it have actually been the murderer who took it?

@@kathysemrau2301 a young woman killed another in a nearby city years ago and kept a part of her skull is why I think it could possibly be the killer, especially seeing as how it sounds rather chaotic in the investigation of the axe murders. Every time I see a picture of those sweet little kids, it just breaks my heart that they died so scared and violently. Poor babies. 🥺

Yes it was. People I feel get caught up too much in the paranormal/ghost hunting aspect of it and don't stop to realize this was where 8 people, 6 of them kids, were brutally and senselessly murdered.

I read "The Man From The Train", it's theory was there was a man who traveled all over the country by hopping trains, picking a house with a firewood pile and a young girl in the household, watching the house to get an idea of how many people he was dealing with, and then killing everyone before hopping onto another train to make his escape. These murders started in the 1890's and continued for 25 or 30 years, I can't remember. The book even names a suspect for the murders and lays out why this man is the suspect.
Well you have the ax man of New Orleans, killed many with their own ax. Very similar
@@bigdbigooo7829 the book states that the axe man of New Orleans is a completely different killer. mostly because the man from the train is far more effective a killer than the axe man. the axe man had many survivors of the attacks, whereas the man from the train never left any survivors and killed over a very long period of time.
There was a chilling movie about that , when he killed everyone, he ate his meal, washed up,, slept in their beds for a bit, before moving off on and other train. The bacon left in their bedrooms might have signified they were pigs in his eyes.. dead ones in this case.

The motive is killing people. As is the case with all psychopaths.
Only murderers who knew their victims or had a personal relationship with them cover the faces of their victims or cover the whole bodies. My guess is the killer knew the family.

It is just so hard trying to get into a mind like this person had. Especially not even knowing the person. So frustrating and we will never truly know.
@@dcbeez5956 Yes, I'd say to lesson the guilt. To escape the face to face conviction from the lifeless gaze of someone familiar. When a murder victim is found with the face covered, chances are very high the assailant knew the victim. This doesn't mean they are covered every time persons are killed by someone who knew them. However, the perpetrater is not wanting the stares, the eyes of the slain convicting them, so take the action of hiding the deceased face. Since there is an elevated probability victim and perp were associated, the chances are low it was a stranger.

@@dcbeez5956 Yes. He even went as far as to cover all of the mirrors and close all of the windows (basically anything that show any reflections). I'm not sure if he knew them personally, but I'm sure that he knew them enough to know about their daily routines. That's why he was able to hide in the attic and wait. He could be some bitter neighbor, church goer, mailman, clerk at the stores that they family shopped at, basically any spectator who was ever around the family all the time.
I live and grew up here in Iowa and these murders are still talked about today. My youngest son has gone and spent the night there and said that the house has a strange feel to it. He also said that he saw a child’s ball roll by itself on the floor and they could hear footsteps. Thank you for sharing this. Love how you tell these stories. ❤️

As a fellow Iowan I can attest that this case is indeed very much still talked about. Every time something happens and multiple people in one family die, regardless of the manner of death, it's compared to the Villisca axe murders, including that time the guy in Richland unintentionally blew up his house killing most of his family.
Lots of weird stuff going on in that town at the same time...it's strange that there were so many suspects.
Yep, I always say Villisca was a perfect storm. You had a dark overcast night, no streetlights on, the rivalry between Mr. Moore and Mr. Jones then on top of that, that freakazoid Rev. Kelly just happened to be in town that night. It's like the perfect ingredient or character list for a Stephen King novel yet the scary thing is it really happened!
One more addition, insight about the telephone being covered. Back then EVERYONE was on a single party line as multiple lines were not a thing, the telephones back then didn't have a filter, if you picked up the phone, you might be able to hear what was going on in another resident, which might be why the phone was covered to muffle sounds going out, but, I would think this would be a regular habit of homeowners to cover their phones with that knowledge.
My Grandmother had a party line all the way up to the 1980's where at least 5 other households in the area all were rung at the same time because it is cheaper.
Party lines are still offered up on landlines, but NOW it's an _extra_ service, a perk, which is pretty laughable in this day and age.
I absolutely love the special effects of the old-timey photos, the blinking of the eyes and the slight head and body movements make them so eery and creepy, very awesome special effects!!!

Thank you for your respectful and well researched telling of this tragic story. While I'm a believer in paranormal research and think that the story of these people needs to be kept alive, the fact that this house is kept standing merely to be gawked at for titillation (and most importantly, perhaps the spirits within perpetually tormented by any Joe Blow curious about ghosts and able to shell out the dollars for overnight rental) for personal profit is distasteful to me. All of the victims are buried close by and their graves are also exploited for mere entertainment value. I do agree with your assessment of the murderer. I've always thought "Reverend" Kelly a very likely suspect but the number of unsolved axe murders in the Midwest lends serious doubt to that conclusion. Ultimately, I just wish the victims and their families peace.
Iowa native checking in! I had the great pleasure of meeting Kelly Rundle, the director of "Vallisca: Living with a mystery" at a viewing and roundtable discussion in 2006. Very caring and carefully made documentary. Mr. Rundle was very passionate about the project and it was interesting to hear him speak.
There is a legend I had heard that the bleeding heart flowers Mrs. Moore planted never bloomed again after the murders. When the house was restored they finally bloomed.

That’s the most heartbreaking story, ever. Just..I can imagine anyone just happy planting flowers and things happen so fast to stop their happiness..Mrs. Moore including..just smiling and all of a sudden that happens..
I also have met the Rundles ( I attended a special town hall type event they held in Red Oak back in 2012 for the 100th anniversary) and they definitely know their stuff. Very well done documentary - I own the DVD of it - and I recall hearing that bleeding heart flowers story (SAD) from either them or Darwin and Martha Linn, who owned and restored the house.
All throughout this bizarre case, my mind kept thinking “Boy, I wish Frank Hamer was on the case”. He was the Texas Ranger that tracked down Bonnie and Clyde. Always got his man. What was the deal with the bacon?

Kelly, Frank Hamer and my wife's grandfather, Duke Hudson were Texas Ranger partners on the Rio Grande operating out of Del Rio before WWI. I was in the area where bonnie and clyde were gunned down not too long ago. I was doing some survey work out that way and my boss and I drove out there on our lunch break since it was close. Gibsland, I think it was called.

We forget that essentially all they had forensically was fingerprints, shoe prints, etc. No DNA, no crime scene reconstruction (well, half the town came thru, anyway).
A couple of other creepy notes about the Villisca case and some eerie incidents around the case:
- At around 10 PM on Sunday night, around the same time the Moores and Stillingers were leaving the church, night watchman and marshal Hank Horton saw a mysterious man walking across the town square from the southwest corner to the east. Horton called out to the man to ask who he was but the stranger just kept on walking off into the darkness.
- The family and Stillingers were briefly joined by a couple of other friends and children from the church service, brothers Floyd and Orville Watt, who lived somewhere past the Moore home. They were most likely the last people to see the Moores and Stillingers alive. But the spooky part is either the Watt boys or one of the other kids claimed they saw a person hiding behind a tree or in the bushes near the Moore home as the group was coming down the street toward the house. The Moore home did in fact have a few taller shady oak or elm trees in the front yard. Who was this man and why this story did not get more attention through the years has always made me curious.
- At around 2 or 3 AM Monday morning, most likely just after the murders, Xenia Delaney, the overnight phone operator at the exchange office downtown reported she heard someone walking up the fire escape staircase to the office door and rattle the doorknob. Fortunately it was locked but this was not a normal incident, as the night watchman typically did not check upstairs office doors during his nightly checks. Plus Xenia had worked at the office for at least a year previous and this was the first and only time such a thing happened. Just who was this mysterious "vistor"???
Thanks for posting this. The Villisca Axe Murder is the Midwest's answer to Lizzie Borden or the Amityville murders. It's also a horrific senseless crime and the oldest cold case in Iowa history. I have visited the house at least two dozen times over the last 20 years. In fact I was working as a newspaper reporter in nearby Shenandoah in 1999 when I covered the very first paranormal investigation by a group from Omaha. I also own four different books on the murder, including Bill James' "The Man From the Train," as well as a very well-done documentary called "Villisca: Living With a Mystery."
Very interesting experiences in that house over the years in subsequent visits with friends. Yes the haunting/paranormal stuff is interesting but I am endlessly fascinated and haunted by what happened that night, the true "Whodunit??" question. I always tell people Villisca was the perfect storm - a dark, overcast night, no street lights, the strange visiting minister, Reverend Kelly and the similarities to so many other murders in the Midwest and Plains states at the time.
For my two cents' worth, I feel this was the work of a deranged (clearly) serial killer who traveled the railroads around the US and would choose a town at random whenever the urge to murder hit him. I feel he snuck into town, unnoticed, and hid in the Moore's backyard barn the evening before and observed the family, then waited patiently. This had to be a person who knew how to sneak into a dark house at night, undetected and how to move about said house quickly and efficiently, striking his victims so as to not wake the others.
However, I do also feel Reverend Kelly, given his prior history of window peeping and sexual impropriety, was on one of his nighttime strolls. I think he was lurking around in the shadows near the Moore home that night and just happened to see and/or hear something related to the crime. I can't prove it 100% but I also cannot disprove it, given Kelly's history of disturbing behavior before and after the murders.
On a side note, the newspaper clipping at the very end needs clarification. Mrs. Sarah Stillinger, the mother of Lena and Ina, did not die from shock of the crime but sadly, the same week of the murders, gave birth prematurely to a stillborn baby boy. So the poor woman lost 3 children in a week, it's amazing she did not actually die from the shock and stress. I believe she died sometime in the 1940s. But the article was correct in that the Stillingers lost most of their farm in a fire that fall of 1912. Obviously a very tragic and forgettable year for that poor family.

Being a nerdy kid intrigued by gruesome crimes, I had originally read an account of this many years ago. Have also watched probably some of the same documentaries as you. However, this was so well researched (thank you Sarah!) that it gave me new info about the case. Thank you!!!
Excellent job presenting this. It's a fascinating and disturbing case. What I find odd is that the killer used the blunt side of the ax on ALL the victims. Why? Most people would use the sharp side of the weapon (I'm reminded of the Lizzie Borden case) rather than the side that would require far more force to inflict damage. The sheer ferocity of the blows seems to indicate either insanity or a lot of rage directed at these people in particular. However, I think the thought process involved in covering all the windows and remembering to lock all the doors almost certainly rules out a truly insane person. As for covering the mirrors, I would guess that person was either highly religious or superstitious, although I doubt it was done as a symbol of "mourning" where in some cultures they cover the mirrors so that the mourners focus on the deceased rather than their own appearance. The packages of bacon could mean something or nothing. I can't imagine someone who was cognizant enough to cover mirrors and windows and lock doors would leave such valuable rations behind. My best guess is that this was someone that felt like they had a reason to be angry at this family, that maybe they felt they had been cheated or wronged in some way and they took their anger out on them at a time when it was likely they would all be in the house (they probably didn't count on the two Stillinger girls being there) and they clearly timed the murders where it would be hours before anyone would think to check on the family. I think it's likely that there was a level of planning done and that whoever was really responsible would know that it was likely a tramp or deviant would be blamed because of the nature of the town. Just a theory of course.
Yes, returning to the bodies to repeatedly smash the skulls seems to indicate that the murderer knew the families, and felt enormous rage and hatred towards them. Of coarse, a deranged serial killer might do that to the bodies as well, out of sheer enjoyment? You'd think a hired gun would to the job and get the hell out of there as quick as possible.
Yeah, using the blunt edge, instead of the blade of the axe is odd. During this time period there were other axe murders of some other families. You have to remember in some of these small towns, and farms, people didn't have electric or gas stoves. They often used wood burning stoves. There were also kerosene stoves, like ones by the Perfection Stove company.Later on there were actually kitchen stoves that used gasoline.Yes gasoline just like your car. @@ObsoleteOddity Dear OO. I am from Iowa and dabble in historical research. The bit of info that Villisca might take its name from a Native word meaning "Evil Spirit" is interesting. I have wondered for a long time if certain locations where more modern crimes occur are connected by locus to historical events, where carnage occurred in the past, while natives warred with other tribes and with white settlers on the frontier.
If you ever want to hear the story of the quintuple murder of a family near Bonaparte, Iowa, around 2007, I would spin the connections to past and present in great detail, from my files.
The murderer in this tale is alive in prison right now, for killing his parents and three blonde high school cheerleader sisters in their family home. He should have plead innocent due to the evil location of his family home.
The home is located on the spot where a phrenologist and patent medicine doctor hid the remains of Sauk and Fox Chief Black Hawk, robbed from his grave, shortly after the journal of phrenology published a study of the Chief's death mask.
The potter's daughter, who was 14 yo at the time, recorded her eyewitness account of the event as an old woman. The Dr. boiled the skull in an iron pot to take off the flesh and hair. He wanted to take the skull out east for phrenology lectures, but having no use for the skeleton bones, he threw those in the outhouse. An antebellum stone building, home to the lock tender on the Des Moines River, stands to this day, beside the marked gravesite of Black Hawk. A famous painted, the Funeral of Black Hawk," hangs in the National Museum in Washington, DC, memorializing his burial on the left bank of the river.
I researched the death of Black Hawk and events shortly after his death for about fives years, trying to figure the true ending to answer the question, where did the skull and bones finally end up? I quit this mad study when the brother killed his three sisters and parents.
This is a case ripe for discoveries in the study of evil, Ponerology. Believe me. Are some places the center of evil for all time?

HEY we've missed you
I've been in this house! We were out on a drive one day looking for off the beaten path places and we found out about Villisca and that they gave tours. We pulled up out front and near the outbuilding there was this old man in bib overalls sitting in a rocking chair. Not going to lie, we hesitated, it felt like something out of a Stephen King novel. :) We went ahead and met the man, he was the current owner at that time. They were technically closed to tours, but since he didn't have anything else going on he volunteered to do a tour just for us. It is a fascinating story and as someone who feels like they are sensitive to this type of thing, there was a very unsettled air in the place. We got to see the attic space where they thought the killer(s) hid, and where a couple of the children hid. He told us about all the suspects, the complete lack of crime scene management(those were the days when gawkers were able to wander through a scene before and sometimes after the police arrived). If you ever find yourself in nowhere Iowa, take a tour. Or if you hold a belief in paranormal activity, stay the night. :)
I'm pretty sure that around that time, covering mirrors in a place where people had died was a superstition to keep the dead in their graves, or something like that. Obviously, covering the windows served a useful purpose
It's so the sprite of the dead can't enter the mirror. But sprites don't hold with that too much from what I've seen and read about.
Your sprite leaves the body at the time of death, it is not stuck in a grave.
According to Chabad.org, mirrors are covered during the seven days of mourning. One reason is to keep from distracting oneself by checking one's appearance. According to Kabbalists, it's to keep one from seeing the otherwise invisible. evil or demonic spirits that are attracted to the void left by a death. Read the entire page of Why-Are-the-Mirrors-Covered-in-a-House-of-Mourning. It's quite interesting. Some Catholic countries use the custom. Apparently some non-Christian cultures also do it. One of the reasons I just read was to prevent the mirror from trapping the soul of the dead person (I think that dates to when the wakes/visitations were held at home). Another belief I ran across was that a person who looked into a mirror after a death would die soon. If it wasn't a custom among any of the families in Villisca, it could suggest that the killer or killers were outsiders.
Covering the mirrors , was about making sure you soul did not get trapper in them, they also kept one window open, so your spirit could leave.

I hadn’t heard this one in a long time, but I think it was about the girl, and he killed parents first then the children, the girl who had caught his eye, and finally making sure he had actually killed the parents. Reverends rarely came under suspicion in these days. His early and abrupt leaving town raises suspicions as well as him peeking in windows and sending bloody clothing to the laundry in a different town. For all we know he may have done the other axe murders as well, given that he travelled. He may have thought the desire for children was an evil sent upon him by Satan, and only by this means could he lay it to rest. Strange case all round in my view, but I feel the children are the key here. The turning down of the wick was a trick known by many I would think. Thank you for the reminder of a very dark and confusing crime. Light and love, as always.🖤🇨🇦

Whether lust was the motive or a case of opportunity presented, we'll never know - but it wasn't robbery and the extreme violence certainly indicates someone totally unhinged.

They are protected and go unpunished, until after the Judgement of course. All we do is noted down here. I do hypnosis and things come out. Haunting. So many these days want to say Chris Watts was the most famous murderer in America, and the worst. Thanks to you I'm educated on the fact that serial killers and family murders have been going on for years...every death is sad, and none are any worse than others. I agree with you about the post murder sexual component..eerily creepy. It's a shame so much evidence was destroyed. Thanks as always for a most interesting glimpse into the past!
Who thinks Watts is the most famous or worst? Pretty sure Holmes still holds that title, is it because his crimes are still fresh?
@@Sunshine_Daydream222 I think Holmes was worse, but the murder of any life is a tragedy. I don't think Watts would have had the coverage he did had Shannan not been so public on Facebook. I think of both the recent Jones murders, the family in Orlando by the physical therapist, and the recent deaths of the family murderd by Carbon Monoxide in the family car, and the Hart family deaths were a much larger scale, and didn't draw the attention Watts did by many TH-cam creators. Watts was a money maker for many until TH-cam began demonizing crime channels. Watts was solved in 3 days, and although the psychological aspect is interesting, it didn't warrant endless videos of looking at the spot he pooped in!
@Onion FaceThe Chris Watts Case horrifies people , because of the extreme Psychopathic nature. There are many photos of Chris Watts posing with his daughters and wife like a happy family man. Also, the way in which he stuffed their bodies into a hole leading to the oil tank. He had to push them in so hard , hair and scalp were found on the opening.
I believe Ted Bundy is the most notorious serial killer in The USA! There certainly have been a slew of movies made about him!! Several recent movies and many over the years!! Far more attention than he deserves! Maybe I notice all the movies about that evil monstrosity, because he murdered a sister and her friend of a dear friend of mine in 1976.

Great presentation. I'm in the uk but I heard about this story watching the investigation on the 'dead files' If their findings are to be believed it was the Rev along with a couple of accomplices. There's also some more information about the ham on there. It's absolutely shocking that all those people were aloud through the house. Thanks for sharing.

But slot of times I listen to these stories.

I have been there several times. One of my favorite places. Spoken to the owner, he has long past. They do give you a guided tour of the graves. It's really sad.
And point out buildings in the town. The house or houses next store have paranormal happenings them selves. The tour guide at the time , verry nice guy, has been on tv. He was telling me that they had a person come over and sprey the house. He said you could still see the blood splatter. Even after one hundred years.
Wow, creepy..wonder if GED match DNA could solve this case.
This is one I didn't know about.
They did the same thing at the Lizzey Borden home. They sprayed under the couch in the living room, on the ceiling where the couch had been and in the basement at the dry sink area. Blood stains were in the walls, and on the metal bowl.
I don't know if they sprayed the floor where the step mother was.
They put the bodies on the dineing room table. Uck!

I live in Iowa and my Granddaughter and I visited Villisca. We did not encounter "evil" but, the kids played ball with us. We are not ghost hunters. We love history. Most town people think the believed that the killer was in the attic, which is a room between the kids and parents room. I do believe it was just a crazy person that sought them out. We love your work and watch your commentaries Always! Keep up the good work and continue doing your history work.

I spent the night in this house with a small group of friends in 2012. It was the 100 year anniversary of the murders, and just before Halloween.
The house is super creepy and you can definitely feel a heaviness to it, most especially under the stairs (where the neighbor girls probably hid) and very strongly in the attic.
We experienced a bit of paranormal activity: loud knocking on the screen door but no one there, noises coming from the kitchen.
It’s a tiny house and 8 of us could barely cram into the living room to try to sleep. It was freezing and there is no heat, electricity, or water in the house itself (bathroom facilities and a space heater were in a shed out back).
When everyone else was sleeping (I couldn’t), I distinctly heard a growl coming from one corner of the room. It happened several times. It was certainly inside, and I have no explanation for it. It scared the absolute crap out of me.
Paranormal stuff aside, just being in a place where such horror occurred is an experience in itself. That negative energy leaves a deep imprint, and as an empath, I found it quite overwhelming.
I passed by this town on the way to visit my son. I don't get creeped out but this town definitely had a creepy vibe. I love your videos.

Have heard it for many years I think it was the drifter. The bacon was probably brought in by him. Back in the day when someone died they would cover the mirrors. Back then they didn't investigate like we do now. Someone off the train maybe. Kelly wasn't tall enough to get the ax that high in the ceiling. The person has to be taller. I was thinking maybe the guy that was working on the train line he was a bigger man and worked the lines. He was very suspicious.

I live fairly close to this. My husband has actually done work in this town. They have tours and even overnights in this house for very reasonable prices. Never been brave enough to do it even though I'm only about an hour away. Thanks, Oddie, you covered this beautifully!

Reminds me of a house from the Revolution times one night when my roommate ran into my room next to hers ....footsteps...up the steps then went past my door, then came back and stopped just outside the door.
I took the candle out of the wine bottle, raised it up, opened the door & we saw nothing. There was old fashion hand writing about her bed we couldn't make out.
Downstairs a big cup was over turned on the fridge all the pens should have fallen but didn't & the big Great Adventures pencil was found on my room mate's pillow.
She moved out...I wanted to stay but had to move cause without a room mate I couldn't pay the rent.
I moved two homes down from that place, where I lived in an apt up stairs and it too was from the Revolution times and had wonderful ghosts. I was in the Army & not into ghost hunting at the time. The homes are still there.
Houses do acquire memories and energies.
At the Gettysburg Battlefield they're out in broad daylight, looking almost like re-enactors.

it was a tradition primarily in the southern sates to cover mirrors and windows.where death had occurred.The covered windows to show mourning and the mirrors to hide the body from its spirit or to keep the spirit from becoming trapped in the mirror . a few religious groups also observed this tradition as well as a few others whom still observe this.
I've visited this house 3 times. Spent the night once. Pretty creepy.

Also due to the shock of their daughters death the very pregnant Mrs. Shillings lost their baby son. So they lost 3 children and Mrs Stillinger due to the horrendous murders the baby boy is buried with his mother. Both families are buried in the local cemetery so many buried from the night of carnage. Just so sad.
Something as violent as an attack with an axe, I assume, would be noisy. In close quarters like that little house, how did this murderer manage?
And, with hard wood floors throughout... Noise travels.

I’ve always read that the killer waited until the train was passing so the screams would be drowned out.
We asked this question when we toured the house. One of the scenarios suggested the children were killed first as they were easier to contain. Then the killer(s) went back upstairs and killed the upstairs occupants.
Oddie I do not know how you manage to dig up so much amazing history but we love you and appreciate your dedication.
